Welcome to the February Issue of Energy Magazine!
2009 marks the 20th Anniversary of Healing Touch Program! This entire year is being devoted to re-
gional events, a media blitz and a big celebration at this years Worldwide Conference in Denver July 31st through
August 4th. (Honored keynotes this year include Jean Watson, Dorothea Hover-Kramer, Sue Wagner, Carol Komitor
and Linda Smith.) We will feature articles in Energy Magazine throughout the year from some of our elders in the
Healing Touch Program -- those who were on board with Janet Mentgen from the inception of the HT Program in the
1980s. Sharon Scandrett-Hibdon offers the rst of these engaging stories
Februarys Energy Magazine has its usual array of fascinating offerings including The Six Pillars of Energy Medi-
cine by the well known and highly respected David Feinstein and Donna Eden. David and Donna generously gifted
Franny Harcey (HTP staff) and me with a complementary day of their Energy Medicine class last summer at ISS-
SEEM (International Society for the Study of Subtle Energy and Energy Medicine). What a warm, fun and mind-bend-
ing team they are! You will greatly appreciate their contribution to EM. It is a seminal article which will prepare you to
condently present energy medicine and Healing Touch to the world of mainstream and holistic health care.
We have wonderful articles from Canada this month with an exciting overview of their wide and growing activity
with Healing Touch Program classes. Those of you who always wanted to visit Newfoundland (The ROCK!) have an
invitation to attend the Canadian HT Conference this April! (see ad)
Some other offerings in this issue of Energy MagazineColleen Crickets article on Ecology of Mind will introduce
you to the study of epigenetics, or, aptly termed by Dr. Bruce Lipton in his well known book The Biology of Belief
. His work is amazingly relevant to Healing Touch practice and principles. Kathy Allan recounts fascinating clinical
experiences with the Trauma Release Method from Healing Touch Program. Experience with veterans traumas and

Corinne Crockett, RN, BScN, CHTP, RSI Interim Practitioner, currently teaches at UBC Okanagan
in the School of Nursing. Her article, Ecology of Mind, is about Epigenetics: an emerging science that
explores factors that inuence the expression of our genes. We are not victims of our genetics; we are
the authors of our experience, often unknowingly.
Barb Dahl, BSN, RN, HCTP/I, studied with Janet Mentgen in Denver in the 80s, was in the rst
group of Healing Touch Instructors and has taught well-over 200 workshops in the USA, Canada, and
the Netherlands. This months Featured Healing Touch Certied Practitioner is Kia Abilay. Read how a
Hawaiian hotel queen found herself giving Healing Touch treatments while living in a tent for a year
on the 200 acre Omega Institute of Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck, New York.
Heidi Katchia Van Vliet, MSSW, HTCP, worked for 20 years with emotionally disturbed children
and their families, but now uses some of those skills with her Healing Touch. She has been doing
Healing Touch work since her rst class in 2001, and became certied at the rst HTPA conference in
Denver last summer. Her article, Welcome Home Healing Community Project for Veterans, is about
her rst volunteer project for her Healing Touch Program Level 5 homework where she offered Healing
Touch to a group of Veterans who suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Donna Eden is among the worlds most sought, most joyous, and most
authoritative spokespersons for Energy Medicine. David Feinstein, Ph.D.,
a clinical psychologist, has served on the faculties of The Johns Hopkins
University School of Medicine and Antioch College. Their article, The Six
Pillars of Energy Medicine, discusses the six distinct advantages of Energy
Medicine in comparison with the conventional medical model.
Kathy Moray Allan, RN, HNC, HTCP/I, SEP, is a Healing Touch Certied Instructor and is on the
faculty of Beyond Ordinary Nursing where she teaches Integrative Imagery. In her article, Healing
Touch and Trauma, Kathy draws from her personal experiences working with clients suffering from
various forms of trauma giving us examples of Healing Touch techniques that can be used to help
those who are suffering.
Our Contributors
Carole Sarian, HTCP, is a professional writer and a Healing Touch Certied Practitioner in teacher
training currently working at an Alzheimers Care Facility. Her article, The San Diego Stand Down,
features a collection of short experiences from the many volunteers who gave their time and hearts to
help veterans in need at the annual Stand Down in San Diego.
Sharon Scandrett-Hibdon, PhD, RN, HTCP/I, is past President of the American Holistic Nurses
Association and is currently a Family Nurse Practitioner in a college health clinic in N. Texas (UNT).
Sharon is the rst author in the new monthly series, Elder Wisdom. Our HT Community is rich with
practitioners and instructors who were with Janet Mentgen when she created her Healing Touch
Program. Many remain active today - all have experiences and stories that contribute to our Healing
Touch Historical Roots.
Marilee Tolen, RN, HNC, HTCP/I, is the author of our monthly column, Money as Energy. In this
months column, Your Wound Can Be a Gift to the World: A Secret to Discovering Your Niche and
Surviving Economically As a Healer in Practice, Marilee tells us the top reason she has found that
motivates people to study Healing Touch is that they received a healing session that improved their
own life.

A THANK YOU NOTE from Connie Silva
I feel deeply grateful to Lisa Mentgen-Gordon for having
opened the path to the Healing Touch Community following
personal loss from Hurricane Ike this last September. The re-
sponse to replace some of my teaching materials in my holistic
practice has been generous and very special. I have received a
good number of CDs, books, and even small items to set up an
altar. There were money donations that I will utilize towards the
purchase of a new massage table and a CD player. The sup-
portive intention of those who responded to my call is inherent
within each carefully selected item sent to enhance an environ-
ment conducive to healing. They are exemplars from the best
of the best. It has been a lesson of learning to receive. Thank
you, and may your kindness and generosity return to you in the
same beautiful way that it was given.

Service Day 2009 in Denver, CO

On Saturday, November 1st, 2008 at the Wings Over the Rock-
ies Air and Space Museum in Denver, Colorado, we held our
Second Annual Whisperingtree.net Service Day. Acupuncture,
Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Sound Therapy, Healing Touch, Reiki,
Jin Shin Jyutsu, Reexology and Massage practitioners and
volunteers provided healing work for our Service members.
We found it gratifying seeing and hearing all the different fami-
lies ask for more information about the many therapies. Ap-
proximately forty-ve attendees sampled the different therapies
available to them. For many, the benets were immediately felt
and valued. Some of the healers were veterans themselves, or
they had spouses and children currently deployed.
We have a number of service members outside of the United
States that will return sometime next year; obviously, 2009 is
an important year for them. Our service members face many
challenges as they return from deployment. This is where our
practitioner community can make a big difference in helping
smooth the path.
Because their lives may depend on it, military personnel pride
themselves on their physical endurance and mental tolerance,
and rightly so. Yet, additional health and wellness is valuable to
all of us. Providing the benets we see to our veterans helps
them, their families, our communities, and our nation.
Without a doubt, we can help.

Janet Mentgen introduced the Trauma
Release Technique to the Healing Touch
Program in 1996. This technique was a radi-
cal departure from traditional cognitive, be-
havioral and emotional cathartic therapies
and -- it worked. Janet didnt know how it
worked. All she knew was that it eliminated
long-term symptoms of traumatic stress in
over 100 people who had suffered from trau-
matic injuries. She would tell us to just do the
work and that the science behind it would
follow. She was right. Discoveries in neuro-
physiology research have recently validated
this powerful technique.
According to Robert Scaer MD, noted Neurologist and Trauma
expert, the Trauma Release Technique actively inhibits brain
arousal systems, which in turn, allows the somatic messages
of trauma in the body to be extinguished, removing one of
the primary sources of brain kindling and perpetuation of the
trauma response.
Kindling usually refers to material needed for starting a re.
However, when used in the context of trauma, it refers to the
internal cues in the body that lead to the spontaneous return
of the traumatic stress state. The goal of the Trauma Release
Technique is to extinguish these internal cues and stop the
perpetuation of the trauma response.
The following cases may help you understand how this works.
1. My friend, John, was ying home from a speaking engage-
ment when he was told to prepare for a crash landing. The
landing gear was stuck in the up position. The ight attendants
face was tense and fearful as she gave John and the other
passengers instructions on how to brace themselves. John
could see re engines on the runway standing by to clean up
the mess. At the last minute, the landing gear dropped and the
airplane landed safely. People were in shock and were throwing
up, soiling their pants and crying after the plane landed. When
they disembarked, the ight attendant gave the usual thanks for
ying with this airline as if nothing had happened.
John was scheduled to y the next weekend for another speak-
ing engagement so he drove straight to my house for a treat-
ment. I modied the Trauma Release Technique for use in an
active state of shock and recent trauma. During the treatment,
he felt an urge to run so I told him to use his imagination and
see himself running. He saw himself sliding down the yellow
emergency chute, and running away from the burning plane
as he held the hand of a child who had been seated next to
him. We completed the Trauma Release Technique and he said
that he did not feel complete and wanted to repeat the entire
process. The second time around, the urge to run returned and
he again used imagery to see himself slide down the yellow
emergency chute and run away from the burning plane. He ran
with all of his might he ran until he felt he was safe.
Imagery allowed John to complete what his nervous system
had planned to do if he crashed. The Trauma Release Tech-
nique extinguished the somatic messages of trauma in the

body and he was able to y the following weekend without
any discomfort.
2. Heather had a traumatic experience nine years before I
saw her. She had been shocked to hear that a routine mammo-
gram found a possible cancerous lump in her breast. She had
a traumatic breast biopsy a few days later - which proved to be
negative for cancer. Shortly after that she lost hearing in her left
ear. What she did hear were terrible noises that sounded like
ringing, clanging, bells tolling, angry bird like screeching, and
howling blizzard-like wind. They were constant and were worse
when she was tired.
Multiple doctors were unable to help her and the only thing that
kept her from going crazy was an antidepressant. The noises
were so bad that she had prayed to die. It was clear to me that
she was in an active state of traumatic stress due to kindling.
Nine years of suffering resulted in exhausted adrenals and a
very depleted energetic body. She needed a series of treat-
ments to address her needs. The rst session consisted of the
Full Body Connection, which included sending energy to the
adrenals to help them relax. Magnetic Passes: Hands in Motion
and Hands Still, as well as Ultrasound were used on her left
ear. Blocked energy was pulled from her left ear and throat and
the left ear was energetically connected to her sacral chakra.
The ear sounds were diminished for a day and a half following
the treatment.
I worked directly with her nervous system in the second session
by applying a healing, soothing gold vibration to her entire ner-
vous system. This was followed with Mind Clearing and Interac-
tive Imagery. Heather visualized herself in a lovely healing place
where she listened to the sound of quiet. There was no noise in
her left ear during the imagery. Following the second treatment
there were no noises in her left ear for three days.
The Trauma Release Technique was done during the third and
the fourth sessions. She heard no noises for two weeks after
each session. She also reported that she had a tendency to
hold back tears and that she was able to cry again.
The fth session included directing energy to the adrenals,
a Full Body Connection and a Mind Clearing. She didnt feel
the need to come for further treatments because she was so
much better and only heard faint noises when she was tired.
The somatic messages of trauma in her body were mostly
extinguished.
3. The last case demonstrates how brain arousal systems are
inuenced by stored somatic messages of trauma and lead to
additional traumas.
Jason, age 21, had been in a car accident
one month prior to my seeing him. He was
in a coma with a ruptured spleen, lacerated
liver, fractured pelvis, three fractured ribs,
collapsed right lung, bruised left lung, kidney
and bladder, and a closed head injury called
brain shear. The fact that he was alive was
a miracle and the doctors expected that he
would be in a vegetative state if he lived.
He had a history of multiple traumas from before his birth. His
mother was in an auto accident and sustained a spinal injury,
when she was two months pregnant with him. His delivery was
breech and he was born with a dislocated hip. When he was
six, he and his mother were in an auto accident. Shortly before
this recent auto accident his father was diagnosed with meta-
static lung and brain cancer.

I treated Jason with Healing Touch every day for two weeks and
during that time his condition uctuated between fair and poor.
His body could not maintain an energetic balance and his coma
prevented me from doing the Trauma Release Technique. The
following is a brief synopsis of the Healing Touch sessions.
At the rst session I began by talking to his spirit and letting him
know that I did not know if he was going to decide to stay on
the planet or to leave but that I would do everything I could to
help him. As I worked with him, I continually set my intent for his
highest good. I then did a Full Body Connection, directing en-
ergy into his bone marrow and letting the body ll and balance

from the core out to the periphery of the body. I also directed
energy through his joints. Other techniques that I used were
Magnetic Passes: Hands in Motion and Hands Still over
traumatized organs and fractures. Although the techniques
I used would usually be sufcient for a session, I felt guided
to also do a Chakra Spread. For the most part I continued to
use these techniques every day that I worked with Jason.
During the second week of working with Jason I also set an
intention for the growth of embryonic brain stem cells to help
his brain heal -- since these cells are responsible for devel-
oping the nervous system.
The following week Jason developed an infection and was
transferred back to the Intensive Care Unit. The family was
too stressed to continue with something that did not have
apparent results and told me they were stopping the Heal-
ing Touch sessions. I asked if the doctors found anything
unusual in Jasons recent lab results and his mother said
that they were surprised to nd some embryonic stem cells.
Although I did not continue with this case, I am grateful that
Jason challenged me to think outside the box to nd a way to
support his healing.
These illustrations demonstrate the importance
of developing new systems in health care to
identify and treat trauma. The Trauma Release
Technique, taught during HTP Advanced Prac-
tice 2 classes, is effective, scientically sound,
easily learned and easy to implement. Refer to
the schedule of classes in this issue of Energy
Magazine. Note that completion of Healing
Touch Level 3 is a prerequisite to attend AP 1
and AP 2 classes.

Conference Breakout Session Preview
Establishing A Complementary Therapy Service in a Healthcare System
Pamela Larsen Schroeder, MSN, RN,C, CHPN
Creating a successful complementary therapy service within an integrated healthcare system requires
more than just the enthusiasm of a single practitioner. Congruence with the institutions mission, vision,
strategic initiatives, and priorities are foundational. A multidisciplinary approach, working through ex-
isting channels, is invaluable. Necessary groundwork will likely include: policy development, feasibility
studies, a pilot program, training and supervision of providers, marketing, and customer service. Partici-
pants will have opportunity for dialogue and sharing related experiences.
We asked Pam to tell us three good reasons why someone might want to attend her breakout session

I am so pleased that you have this opportunity to read this
article authored by several HTP instructors and practitio-
ners in the various provinces of Canada. Last November,
I had the privilege of teaching a large Advanced Practice
1 and 2 weekend in Calgary. In 2008-2009, I will have the
honor of being in Canada four times for classes, includ-
ing instructor training and the Canadian Conference/HTP
Instructor meeting in April (see the ad!). Janet Mentgen
brought HTP classes to Canada in her rst year of in-
augurating the ofcial curriculum in the United States,
so Canada is also helping us celebrate HTPs 20th An-
niversary year of Janets original curriculum on the entire

Healing Touch Snapshots from Canada
Healing Touch is alive and well and growing like a prairie re
across Canada. It continues to be a life-giving and life-changing
experience for those who enroll in HT courses and for those
who experience it on the table (or in a chair, or in bed, or at
the scene of an accident). In this article several people from
central and western Canada offer snapshots of what is happen-
ing as they do the work of Healing Touch in their communities
and regions.
For those of us in the west who do not yet have stories of the
wild and wonderful hospitality of the people of Newfoundland,
we look forward to the Healing Touch Association of Canada
Conference, Energy Rocks, to be held in St. Johns April

Healing Touch Canada was begun by Susan Morales of Toron-
to, Ontario, and Janet Mentgen, who were joint partners for a
number of years. Janet remained a Mentor until the time of her
death. Related, but separate, organizations were formed: the
Healing Touch Association of Canada to communicate with the
HT community across the country, and the Canadian Healing
Touch Foundation (all volunteers) to administer bursaries to HT
students who need them.
Healing Touch in Southwestern Ontario

There is a resurgence of HT activity in Windsor with a group of
practitioners who meet monthly with certied practitioner Kim
Watson. Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital in Windsor has supported
HT classes with Cindy Palajac from London as instructor. Under
the guidance of Cindy Palajac, there is a long-standing practice
group and classes are offered regularly in London. Ele Holst,
our wonderful transplant from BC, is now based in Oakville,
just west of Toronto. She has taught HT classes in the Niagara
Region and Toronto.

Healing Touch in Canada

HT in Canada
The Kitchener-Waterloo region is approximately one hour west
of Toronto, and one hour east of London. Over 180 people have
taken Level 1 Healing Touch in the Kitchener-Waterloo region
in the last three years. In early 2009, Levels 1, 2 and 3 HTP
classes will be offered at the Conestoga College site in Kitchen-
er. The nursing students who have taken Level 1 classes have
taken HT to the West Coast, the great White North and to Africa.
Part of my passion for bringing the work to conventional
healthcare and the education environment is the need for
self-care among health care providers and educators. I wrote
an article called Pebble in the Pond in one of the 2007 issues
of Energy Magazine that talked about how I bring the program
to educators.

Kathy, a Registered Nurse for twenty-six years in a variety of
roles in Canada and the United States, has been involved in
energy-based healing since 1994. She has been a certied
practitioner of HT since 1998 and recently achieved instructor
certication. She was the rst person in Canada to do HT as
part of her Masters thesis. Currently, she is a professor of nurs-
ing in the McMaster/Mohawk/Conestoga Collaborative BScN
program and is pursuing her PhD in nursing. She enjoys her
role as the Editor of Research Corner in Energy Magazine, a
quarterly article highlighting research-related topics, and cur-
rently chairs HTPs Research Advisory Council.
Kathy loves teaching and bringing the work to students and
faculty of the nursing program. Her real passions in life are her
husband Brian and their young children, Alexis and Austin.
In her precious spare time, Kathy loves to be outdoors, read
(something without references), make stained glass and dance
(to anything!).
Healing Touch in Alberta

In the spring of 1994 Alexandra Jonsson, on behalf of Janet
Mentgen, approached Dr. Barbara Dobbie, whom she knew
through the Canadian Holistic Nurses Association, to coordi-
nate a Healing Touch Level 1 class in Calgary with the intention
to expand this work into Alberta. The rst Healing Touch Level
1 class was taught by Alexandra September 9-11, 1994 at the
Children`s Village in Calgary with about a dozen students. In
September of 1995 a Level 2 was taught and a Level 3 in May
1996, both by Rochelle Graham. On the same weekend in May,
Ruth Lamb and Susan Morales taught the second Level 1 HT
class across the hall! Susan Morales taught the rst Level 4 for
all the Calgary learners in October of 1998, and by then all the
earlier levels were being taught in Calgary on a regular basis.
The participants in these early classes have become the HT
leaders of today, as they worked with their Peer Mentoring
groups to develop their skills. By March of 2000 they decided to
form a local organization to support the work of Healing Touch
in the Calgary area and beyond. They developed by-laws and
guidelines and a ve-year plan. Betty Petersen was the rst
President of Healing Touch Calgary, which met monthly, and
soon had a membership of over 100 people.
Healing Touch Calgary continues to co-ordinate HT and
related courses so that people can take them in a local setting.
A 10-person Executive Committee oversees several practice
groups, sponsors a HT presence at Health Fairs, and organizes
potluck gatherings for the members in September, just before
Christmas, to celebrate Healing Touch Day on March 6, at
our AGM each April, and a backyard gathering in June. These
gatherings often include the communal pinning of those who
have become certied in HT, as well as to provide an opportu-
nity for our community to gather in friendship.

HT in Canada
We have developed a website: www.healingtouchcalgary.com
which serves much of western and northwestern Canada.
Our members, many of whom have their own practices, often
volunteer HT sessions at shelters for teens and women, at
Wellspring Calgary for those who have or have had cancer, in
hospices and in hospitals. We have yet to fulll our dream of be-
ing an integral part of the current health care system -- but we
are working toward that goal on a variety of fronts.
Don started Healing Touch through the Naramata Pathways
program in 1998, and after completing Phase 3 he started at
Level 1 in the HT program, becoming HTCP in November of
2008. He works as an Investor Representative for private com-
panies in Calgary, and is currently in his fourth year as Presi-
dent of Healing Touch Calgary. He and his wife, Cindi Reopell,
HTCP, have HT practices in their home.
Healing Touch on the Prairies

I was an eager participant in the rst Healing Touch course in
Calgary, Alberta, in 1994, and then travelled to subsequent HT
classes in various parts of North America to learn more. Many
of us have continued on the Healing Touch journey, in our own
practices, in classes we have taken and taught, and in practice
groups in our communities and churches.
I have recently been certied to teach HT Levels 4 and 5,
having taught Levels 1 and 2 for several years, and Level 3
more recently. In the past year I have taught HT courses in
Whitehorse (Yukon Territory), Yellowknife (Northwest Territory),
Calgary and Edmonton (Alberta), Swift Current (Saskatchewan)
and Winnipeg (Manitoba).
In Winnipeg, HT classes are given in Cancer Care Manitoba,
where, in early December 2008 a medical doctor completed
HT Level 4 in the rst HTP Level 4 class offered in Canada.
One Winnipeg student is currently a HT Instructor-in-Training.
Recently, HT classes have been offered at Community Colleges
in Calgary and Lethbridge in Alberta, and in North Battleford,
Saskatchewan. There are ongoing classes at the Allen Gray
Continuing Care Center in Edmonton, Alberta, where the treat-
ment tables are placed over the labyrinth. Imagine that combi-
nation of energy!
For almost six years Healing Touch has been presented to the
rst-year Medical students at the University of Calgary as part
of their four-hour Integrative Medicine Fair. Currently - this is the
only program of its kind in Canada.
We have seen great growth in the number of people doing
Healing Touch, and also in those offering their support of
those who do the work. Consider the employer in Invermere,
British Columbia, who allowed ve people time off during the
week, and gave us space to hold Healing Touch classes and
practice groups.
In 2001 we held a HT Level 1 class with three students in my
sisters living room in Hazenmore, Saskatchewan, near Swift
Current -- and this Fall we had a HT Level 3 class in that city
with 13 students in attendance.
Consider the three-year-old working with her mother who was
complaining of migraine pain. The child said, Mom sit, I x. The
mothers comment afterward was, I dont know what she did,
but I do feel better. All of that because grandmother had taken
a class and did Healing Touch with the child!

sity of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, has been a certied practitio-
ner since 1998 and certied instructor since 1999. In addition,
she has completed three levels of the Canadian Holistic Nurses

Association specialization course in Holistic Nursing, and is a
certied Spiritual Healer and Eduk practitioner and instructor.
Betty is immediate past president of CHNA and has been in
private practice since 1990.
New Frontier Open for Healing Touch
North of 60

Thanks to HT Instructor Betty Petersen, Yellowknife in the
Northwest Territories now has the beginnings of a vibrant
Healing Touch community. A HT Level 1 class was held in
June of 2007 for 10 enthusiastic students. Betty had a chance
to enjoy the Land of the Midnight Sun and, as her mentees,
my friend Bev Hallett and I had the honour of giving Betty a
Healing Touch session on the shore of Great Slave Lake. The
sounds of the water lapping on the shore, oat planes, ducks,
and the clear morning air with Bach in the background will not
be forgotten.
Since then, the word about Healing Touch has spread through-
out Yellowknife and the outlying aboriginal communities. Healing
Touch is used in our local hospital and we also have 2 practice
sessions a month. It is denitely something that is growing in
our city. Betty has now instructed a second Level 1, and Level
2 and 3 classes were taught in November of 2008. Thank you
Betty for bringing HT to the Northwest Territories!
Cathy, an Operating Room nurse in the hospital in Yellowknife,
NT, started taking Healing Touch classes in 2004. She became
certied in 2008 and was pinned by Cynthia Hutchison in Cal-
gary in November of 2008.
Healing Touch in Whitehorse, Yukon

We live in the Yukon, the remote northwest region of Canada
- sharing our western border with Alaska. In spite of the cold
and isolation we are doing the work in the community, actively
working as volunteers. Many of us offer Healing Touch for
Hospice or palliative care patients. We have also offered volun-
teer programs in long term care facilities, the Cancer Medita-
tion Circle and at the Community College. Our practice group
meets twice a month; one evening is for the community and the
other for HT students and practitioners.
In January, 2008 we formed the Healing Touch Yukon
Association and through this organization we bring instructors
to Whitehorse twice a year to offer HT classes for an
enthusiastic group of students who are working toward
Certication. In November, 2008 we had a Level 3 workshop
and we are already planning for Level 4 in June, 2009. So,
Healing Touch is alive and well in the north and we keep the
light burning even through our chilly winters.
Judi has lived in the north for 36 years and taught in several
communities. She took her Healing Touch classes in the Yukon
and Alaska and is a Healing Touch Certied Practitioner with an
ofce in Whitehorse, Yukon.
Healing Touch at Langara College

Langara College in Vancouver, British Columbia, provides Uni-
versity Studies, Career Studies and Continuing Studies for over
19,000 students each year. It is a college known internationally
for its innovation and foresight.
Healing Touch classes have been offered for many years
through the Langara Continuing Studies Centre for Holistic
Health. Instructors Lois Ross, Ruth Lamb, Ginny Mulhall,
Janet Given and Brenda Anderson, have all been invited to
teach here, offering Healing Touch instruction for people from
the greater Vancouver area, the province of British Columbia,
and beyond.
As well as offering weekend HT Level 1, 2 and 3 classes,

Langara is now including HT as a component of two of their
other programs. The Integrative Energy Healing Program is a
three year course of study of energy healing which begins with
Level 1 Healing Touch. Brenda Anderson is also an instructor in
this program which was created by Ruth Lamb, Lois Ross and
several others.
From this foundation of Level 1 Healing Touch, students contin-
ue an integral approach to healing and spiritual transformation
that bridges ancient eastern and western teachings with recent
scientic discoveries. Linda Turner, director of the Centre for
Holistic Studies at Langara College says, The IEHP program
has been taught here for 8 years now. We have had twenty-two
to fty graduates each year for the past ve years. Our alumni
association is active and we receive very positive responses
from health care organizations throughout British Columbia
where our students and graduates work.
Langaras new Spa Therapy and Holistic Massage Program
prepares students to offer spa therapy with healing properties.
The focus is on Swedish Massage, Thai Massage and Aro-
matherapy. Healing Touch Levels 1 and 2 are integrated with
this to offer students the basics of energy-based healing as a
fundamental component of their skills.
As the recognition of and interest in energy-based healing
increases, it is exciting that Healing Touch is the model and
foundation for the introduction to energy-based healing courses
at Langara College.
Brenda is a Canadian instructor for Healing Touch Levels 1, 2,
and 3. She has also taught Healing Touch and the Principles
of Hypnosis courses and other study groups throughout West-
ern Canada. Combining her nursing education and Healing
Touch, Brenda began practicing in 1993. Her wide range of
experience includes support for people preparing for child-
birth, managing stress, living with cancer, experiencing grief,
and coping with pain.

Brenda began teaching in the Langara College Integrative En-
ergy Healing Program in 2006. Her focus there is Healing Sci-
ence theory and practice as well as Energetic Communication.
Her passion continues to be supporting those taking Healing
Touch into their workplaces and their lives as leaders of change
one small miracle at a time. Brenda and her husband live in a
quiet lakeshore home in Smithers, British Columbia, where they
have raised three children.

The Fairmont Newfoundland went under new manage-
ment as of Jan 13, 2009 with name changed as above.
Stand Downs are one to three day events of-
fered - throughout the year in cities all across
the country - to provide services to home-
less veterans such as food, shelter, clothing,
health screenings, VA and Social Security
benets counseling, and referrals to a variety
of other necessary services, such as hous-
ing, employment and substance abuse treat-
ment. Stand Downs are collaborative events,
coordinated between local VAs, other gov-
ernment agencies, and community agencies
who serve the homeless.
The rst Stand Down was organized in San Diego in 1988.
Eight years ago, Healing Touch was brought to the San Diego
Stand Down by Joan Tweed, a pioneering woman who brought
with her a small tent, a couple of tables and a big heart.
Since that time, San Diego has consistently risen to the occa-
sion providing an ever-increasing number of volunteers from
a range of healing modalities resulting in the Alternative and
Integrative Medicine tent being the largest tent at the Stand
Down surpassing the Medical Tent.
Based on this, I am optimistic that the presence of Healing
Touch at every Stand Down throughout the country will be a
reality. It is my hope that Alternative and Integrative Medicine
tents will be available at every Stand Down and that Healing
Touch will be a major contributor.

I am here to render guidance and support for anyone wishing to

The following are some of the personal experiences of the HT
students and practitioners who volunteered at last years 20th
weekend Stand Down in San Diego. Its not just the Veterans who
are served -- its the practitioners as well. Clearly, a win/win!!
Please consider serving those who served for US as they get
their lives back on track.

San Diego Stand Down
The following are debriefs written by several of those who
served this year.
There were a variety of both Veterans and family members of
the Veterans, mostly older men (perhaps of Vietnam era) with
whom I worked -- most seemed experienced with Stand Down.
C. represented himself as having to sell his body for a testos-
terone study so as to maintain basic needs for room and board.
His stomach was huge and he said, but I eat well! He was
grossly obese and complained of numbness in his toes. I began
with a Chakra Connection and then pulled off energy using
Magnetic Passes: Hands in Motion, paying close attention to his
extremities. He spontaneously reported less numbness.
J., who reported several problems, spoke of a bad back and
radiating pain down his left leg. As I worked on him, I ended
with Magnetic Passes: Hands Still to his left kidney area, apply-
ing gentle pressure. He said that felt good to him.
A. spoke of sinus problems and pain across his brow and high
cheeks. I began with Magnetic Passes: Hands in Motion and
Modied Mind Clearing, concentrating on smoothing his brow
and face. I then asked Diane Cole to do a Mind Clearing -
concentrating on his sinuses so that I could begin working on M.
M. was an experienced Stand Down vet and volunteered to help
with security this year. I believe he represents a real success
story of Stand Down resources. He reported that he was bipolar
with PTSD symptoms. He was found after having hit the bot-
tom, by an Advocate who encouraged/supported him through
his disabilities. He proudly reported he only had seven credits
to go until he could actively work, under mentorship, as an
alcohol and drug counselor. After balancing and smoothing him,
I encouraged him to complete his goals so that he can use his
skills to offer hope of recovery to others.
I then worked with M., the wife of a veteran, who said she was
aware of Healing Touch. As she lay on her back, her head was
tilted to the right and she reported having pain on the left side
of the base of her neck, just above her collar bone. As I worked
on her, I suggested that she could do Healing Touch on her
husband just as I was doing for her! She seemed surprised and
may consider it. Within a few minutes, Ms eight or nine year-old
granddaughter, shyly came over to the table -- perhaps to see
what was going on? I invited her to join me in doing Healing
Touch on her grandmother. She seemed to bask in her newly
acquired skills and easily and happily duplicated my move-
ments. I wondered at the quick study of children -- or was she
teaching ME!??
After about two hours I began to feel very tired. A practitioner I
didnt know came over and gently reminded me that as heal-
ers we also need to care for ourselves. She reminded me to
drink water and rest a tad. I thankfully brought my chair into the
shade under the Alternative Medicine tent, sat down and closed
my eyes as I enjoyed the quiet of many healers working around
me. When I felt rejuvenated I prepared for my next client, realiz-
ing that my three hour volunteer shift would soon be complete.

One of the Veterans with whom I worked was G, a 55 year-old
man, who came to Stand Down to have a little relief from life.
He had, as he called it, a previous life with a wife, a house
and a job but ten years ago he lost it all. He is currently unem-
ployed is living in his car -- is facing a court trial for indecent
exposure while under the inuence of drugs and alcohol -- and
may go to jail. His desperation moved me so deeply. I keep him
in my prayers and send him unconditional love and healing
thoughts every day setting my intent for his highest good.

The experience was monumental. To be part
of such an event was humbling and inspir-
ing. One of my clients wanted help with his
feelings of anger and resentment, not feeling
connected and unable to accept help. Dur-
ing the treatment he told me he was seeing
colors -- green, then blue and some red. After
the treatment he shared that his heart felt like
it opened and there was love he could share.
He felt more accepting and connected.
Donna Magden
About a year ago I heard about STAND DOWN from Car-
ole Sarian in a Healing Touch Level 4 class. She shared her
passion about serving Veterans with compassion and Heal-
ing Touch. When I heard that the STAND DOWN served the
homeless Veterans, something deep within my heart responded
to the call and the rest of me followed. Here is a poem I wrote
about the experience.
STAND DOWN
A Divine Healing Exchange of Souls
Camouage plus green & brown cloth housed the city,
Booths offering services from,
Medical & dental appointments to,
Ministries, social services to alternative modalities,
A Village of Hope.
Housing tents, shower facilities, guarded perimeter,
Abundant food & water, basic needs met,
Calm, tender love,
A drum circle blessing us all.
A Safe Place.
Severe pain on all levels,
Terror lled eyes,
Fight or ight response,
Desperation, not worthy,
Vulnerable Veterans.

As I rst stepped foot on the grounds of Stand Down on Sat-
urday morning I said to myself, Marilyn, why havent you been
here before this? I was in awe of all that I saw, the sincere
intent of everyone to assist others and the Veterans appar-
ent gladness in being there. I have just completed a Level 1
Healing Touch class and to be able to take part in Stand Down
was emotional for me and such a privilege. To be able to give
something so very good to complete strangers -- Veterans who
have given much of their lives, in time and health, to help oth-
ers, to help our country hold on to freedom and to help provide
justice for others throughout our world was very humbling. I
was nervous and at rst worked with Barbara Lester (Bless her)
and then went solo. It was an eye opener to realize I could do
something so profound for others. Saturday morning was a gift
to me and I can only hope it was a good and lasting gift to our
Veterans and all the Volunteers.
Marilyn Duba, Level 1 Student
Just as I experienced at Stand Down last year, the rewards
were huge. Marilyn Duba and I did a short session on a man
who had been shot in the shoulder over 20 years ago. The loss
of his arm and hand, and the pain as he ages were profound.
He is conned to a wheelchair. With our very simple hands-on
session he relaxed and fell asleep. He reported a much lower
pain and stress level after the treatment - which had allowed
him to sleep. For me, that was enough of a reason for being
there.
Barbara Lester
Just being at the Vietnam Veterans Stand Down is an experi-
ence that anyone can appreciate, but as Healing Touch
practitioners, we really get the best of the event. The people
with whom we work are so appreciative, and often the work can
have dramatic effects. Just being there without even working
has a healing effect, as well.
Working with T. who was in a temporary situation that he found
challenging, apparently homeless, and unhappy about others
that just werent doing enough to help themselves, was one of
those dramatic sessions! His hands jerked some while I was
doing a Mind Clearing, and after about 15-20 minutes he fell
into a deep, relaxing sleep. It was timely in that no one was
waiting for the table at that time, so Kathy Allan and I watched
over him for another half hour or more. When he did stirvery
slowlyhe had a curious look in his eyes, as if he was in a
state of euphoria, and all was well! A new view of the world! He
was so very grateful for the experience, and truly seemed to be
a different person when he left feeling very peaceful.
J. was a young man who hadnt been deployed, but had expe-
rienced trauma along the journey, and his eyes were glazed
and apprehensive. He was really waiting for a massage for his
sore back, but accepted the invitation for Healing Touch when
Morgan Lehman, our excellent coordinator, brought him over.
He agreed to lie on the table, asking for help for his back. He
was able to relax during the HT session, and was a little less
glassy eyed afterward. He felt better and the back pain was
less. Before he left for his massage treatment I said, Its OK
to be OK. I dont quite know what that meant, but it seemed to
resonate with him.
I got to work with a couple of women, too. One was a spouse
of a vet who was living at a shelter, and was very anxious. She
also left with a new perspective! We really will never know what
effect we have had on these people, but even if it makes their
lives better for just the few minutes we spend with them, it is a
gift to all of us. Its probably the closest we get to being angels
on earth!
Victoria Lea
This is a little story about a lady named Helen (alias) whose
life was changed by Healing Touch. It was Sunday, July 13
when Helen came into the Alternative Medicine Tent. As she
approached the HT tables, she appeared very nervous, her col-
oring was pale, dull, not normal, and her eyes were, for want of
better words, wild looking. As she talked I could sense a quiet
gentleness, a softness deep within. Although, that was not what
she was presenting at the moment.
Helen told me she had a hyperactive thyroid and was in a great
deal of pain most of the time from a back injury. She had a HT
treatment yesterday and had received such relief from her pain
that she returned today hoping to receive a second treatment
and become even more pain free.
While I was doing a Full Body Connection, I noticed her right
leg was starting to twitch. As I continued the treatment this
movement was accelerating and moving throughout her body.
At that point, I motioned for Carole Sarian to come over. We did
a Magnetic Clearing together, watching her closely. At the con-
clusion of the treatment, it was difcult to arouse Helen. Carole
found her pulse to be 110 and because this was beyond our
scope of practice, she called for a Medic.
As Helen was examined she reported that she had worked all
night and had come straight to the Stand Down without sleep-
ing or eating anything. The Medics determined that she was
dehydrated. As she sat drinking water, I noticed that her ner-
vousness was gone, her coloring improved and her eyes were
calm and happy. There was a softness and gentleness in her
that I sensed when she rst arrived.
Helen was all smiles and practically leaping with joy when she
returned an hour or so later to thank us. Her pain was gone!

Working at Stand Down for the rst time, I came away with
many thoughts and feelings. First, while listening to the con-
cerns of these homeless Veterans, I couldnt help but wonder

where we had failed so many who have given life and limb for
our freedom? Second, I realized the importance of a self-care
program for HT students and practitioners so that we can truly
give from our hearts without exhausting ourselves. Doing the
work of Healing Touch either directly or through a simple smile
and compassionate thought serves to propel the world into
healing. Extending compassion to just one person at a time is
part of the solution. The moment we show up with a compas-
sionate heart -- makes a difference.

Just wanted to say a few words about my experience-
I wanted to participate in the Stand Down for the unique experi-
ence that I had heard it was. It was indeed unique! I have to say
that in my mind I pictured pristine white medical tents and for
some reason those brown tents just hit home harder. Perhaps
it reminded me of some of the older military pictures that I have
seen of war camps. It was really something to see all those
tents, volunteers and Veterans in one place. And it was even
better to meet some of the Vets-all sizes, shapes, ages and all
eager and looking for some rest for the soul.
From where I stood as I did Healing Touch I could
look at the tent for housing and it was an eye
opener to see all those cots. There are so many
folks out there who need our help and I hope
that I offered just a little heart to heart comfort for
someone. The day also allowed me to give back
to my country, not as a soldier, but as a citizen
who really appreciates what I have and the free-
dom to do such things as Healing Touch in order
to support my fellow man.

In the ten years since the publication of our
rst book together, Energy Medicine, we

woo-woo is becoming the respected cutting

Energy Medicine (EM) is accurate, efcient, and cost-effective.
It is based on a different model than conventional medicine,
which focuses on the biochemistry of cells, tissue, and organs.
EM focuses, instead, on the elds that organize and control the
growth and repair of cells, tissues, and organs, and on ways of
inuencing those elds. This leads to six distinct advantages of
EM in comparison with the conventional medical model. These
strengths are the pillars that establish EM as such an exceed-
ingly important development in health care that Mehmet Oz,
M.D., Chief of Cardiology at Columbia, has called energy medi-
cine the next great frontier in medicine.
Pillar 1. REACH: Energy medicine can address biologi-
cal processes at their energetic foundations so it is able to
impact the full spectrum of physical conditions. EM opti-
mizes the energies that surround, permeate, and support the
bodys structure (e.g., its cells, organs, blood, and lymph) and
the body functions (e.g., immunity, respiration, cardiovascular).
EM methods also inuence gene expression -- the cutting edge
discovery that the energetic and environmental factors that de-
termine how a genes potential inuences are expressed -- are
as important as a persons genetic inheritance.
For example, with multiple sclerosis, disturbances in a patients
energy ow can be corrected by holding, tapping, or massaging
specic energy points. Rather than the symptom suppression
seen in most MS treatments, this can bring about changes in
the persons nervous system that begin to reverse the disease
process. You change the energetic environment and the physi-
cal body follows.
Pillar 2. EFFICIENCY: Energy medicine regulates
biological processes with precision, speed, and exibility.
EM techniques address systemic as well as specic disease
factors, ghting disease by strengthening the entire body. They
send signals that are hundreds of times faster than chemical
signals. In addition, they provide instant feedback to the practi-
tioner so interventions can be adjusted for intended outcomes.
For example, balancing and strengthening the energies that
surround and permeate the heart of a post-coronary patient
leads to an internal environment that better supports healing
and repair. The practitioner can utilize energy testing to moni-
tor the effects of the interventions and adjust them accordingly.
Meanwhile, more specic goals, such as lowering the blood
pressure, can be pursued.
Pillar 3. PRACTICALITY: Energy medicine fosters
healing and prevents illness with methods that can be
readily, economically, and non-invasively applied. EM
utilizes specic movements, postures, and hands-on approach-
es that do not require high-tech equipment and do not result in
unintended side-effects.
For example, assessing disturbances in the energy ow to the
kidneys of a patient with renal failure allows interventions that
are more exible and precise than medication or surgery and
can be used preventively, circumventing damage to a vulner-
able organ.
Pillar 4. PATIENT EMPOWERMENT: Energy
medicine includes methods that can be utilized on an
at-home, self-help basis, fostering a stronger patient and
practitioner partnership in the healing process. EM

procedures can be self-administered to assess systems that
are out of balance, implement corrective actions, and build
resilient energy patterns throughout the body. People can read-
ily learn them, often enjoy utilizing them, and can practice them
individually or as part of a support group.
For example, cirrhosis patients can on a daily basis utilize
techniques that balance the energies that impact the liver and
enhance its ability to heal. They can be part of a group of pa-
tients at their health care facility who meet on a weekly basis to
reinforce the back-home exercise.
5. QUANTUM COMPATIBILITY: Energy medicine
adopts non-linear concepts consistent with distant healing,
the healing impact of prayer, and the role of intention in
healing. New concepts such as macroscopic quantum interac-
tions have been gaining credibility in explaining how intention
and expectation can impact physical events, as illustrated in the
placebo effect and distant healing. EM explores elds that in-
uence health and consciousness and that work over distance.
For example, cancer patients can be shown how the energies
of their thoughts and imagery affect their healing, and they can
be taught techniques which engage the healing power of fo-
cused intention and guided imagery. Using additional methods
from energy psychology, they can reduce their fear and anxiety
and bolster their condence, all in ways that promote healing.
6. HOLISTIC ORIENTATION: Energy medicine
strengthens the integration of body, mind, and spirit, lead-
ing not only to a focus on healing, but to achieving greater
well-being, peace, and passion for life. EM is based on the
principle that the body, mind, and spirit are integrally connected,
and it promotes their harmonious integration. By vitalizing a
persons energy system, body, mind, and spirit all benet.
For example, where conventional medicine treats kidney dis-
ease by focusing on the organ itself (thus leaving medication
and surgery as the most obvious choices), in energy medicine,
the treatment focuses on the energy systems that impact the
kidneys. Patients can also be shown how psychological con-
icts or spiritual emptiness may exacerbate their symptoms and
can be provided therapies which quickly engage the energetic
foundations of those challenges.
Closing. An essential difference between energy medicine
and conventional medicine involves the concepts of diagno-
sis and treatment. In energy medicine, diagnosis focuses
on disruptions and imbalances in the bodys energy system.
Treatment is not of the disease or its symptoms per se. It is
rather designed to correct the energetic imbalances. Symptoms
provide clues for determining the nature of the imbalances and
a measure of whether the treatment is succeeding, but they are
not the primary focus.
For instance, there is some evidence that, with cancer, the en-
ergies tend to be disorganized and lacking in coherence, while
with multiple sclerosis, they tend to be so highly ordered as to
lack exibility. Energy medicine practitioners assess and correct
such disturbances in the energy eld.

Since this is the rst attempt for us oldsters
to communicate about our journey and long
history, I hope to make this fun as well as
informative. Let me briey introduce myself:
I am Sharon Scandrett-Hibdon and although
I am at retirement age, there is still much
that I want to do. I was an Associate Profes-
sor and psychiatric-mental health certied
specialist when I met Janet Mentgen in 1988
in Estes Park, Colorado when both of us
were invited to serve on the Board of Direc-
tors of the American Holistic Nurses Associ-
ation (AHNA). It was also the year that Janet
was named the Holistic Nurse of the Year by
AHNA based on her work in private practice
and her years of teaching Therapeutic Touch
at Red Rock Community College.
Both of us were a bit wide-eyed and unsure as we stepped into
the political whirlwind of holistic health at the national level.
AHNA at that time was attempting to gain a foothold in the
holistic playing eld. The American Holistic Medical Association
(AHMA) -already established - was supportive of our efforts.
Charlotte McGuire, the founder of AHNA, really wanted nurses
to have their own group and felt holism held a great life pattern
for nurses who were often overworked, tired and feeling used.
Energy work was readily accepted as a good way to revitalize
the nursing profession -- if it could be made available to willing
nurses.
Janet was invited to offer her coursework for continuing edu-
cation contact hours which AHNA would provide as a way to
get nurses involved. Quickly accepting that invitation, Janet
offered the rst Healing Touch class in 1989 at the University
of Tennessee (my school) and we had a large class of fteen
participants from all over the country. Most of the students
were experienced teachers and healers, and most completed
the program coursework. We held Levels 4 and 5 (the last
two levels of the ve-course core curriculum) at Peace Valley
Retreat, Arkansas.
As Janet, Dorothea Hover-Kramer, Myra Tovey, Susan Morales
and I (as well as other AHNA Board members) planned the
curriculum, the idea of creating the rst energy therapy cer-
tication program became eminent. Concurrently the AHNA
certicate for Holistic Nursing Program was being developed by
Veda Andrus and Jane Lundt. However they were still develop-
ing their program coursework when the Healing Touch certi-
cate program was completed.

Healing Touch was ready to move forward immediately with Ja-
net teaching all of the courses which she had developed over
the previous ten years in the Denver area. Janet wasnt sure

it was necessary for Healing Touch to become a certication
program, but I felt strongly that it was important - as did others.
So the energy carried us forward, AHNA supported our efforts
(I was fortunate to be the president of AHNA at that time), and
as you can see, in 1994, the rst certied practitioners were
acknowledged.
As you can imagine, the HT program took off. The early
instructors began teaching immediately and the number of
classes grew very quickly. It felt like the Healing Touch energy
caught us and hurled us into the world creating a whirlwind.
That whirlwind continued for a long while -- and here we are,
twenty years later, celebrating Janets original program -- now
being taught in thirty-two countries around the world! To be

BSN and Ph.D., from the University of Iowa, and MSN from
Texas Womens College. She has been in private practice for 16
years doing psychotherapy and touch therapy. She is currently
a Family Nurse Practitioner in a college health clinic in N. Texas
(UNT) and has opened a NARHA therapeutic riding center at
her ranch which focuses on physical and mental-emotional is-

In August of 2005, I organized my rst vol-
unteer project on the Warm Springs Indian
Reservation in Oregon for my Healing Touch
Program Level 5 homework. I had planned on
doing HT with the elders in the assisted living
program while a friend of mine, Larson, (from
the reservation), played the Native American
ute. When I asked Larson about playing
the ute, he wanted to know about Healing
Touch. I met him at the longhouse (a Native
American lodge) and gave him a treatment.
He felt relief from his pain from shrapnel inju-
ries he sustained in combat. Immediately, he
felt that we should bring Healing Touch treat-
ments to the veterans.
Larson, a Vietnam veteran, told me he had a vision as a child of
seven Native American warriors riding horseback up a hill and
into the sky. Years after his tour of duty in Vietnam he realized
that this vision was meant to inspire him to help many wounded
warriors like himself and their families. In 1996 he started the
Wounded Warriors Healing Circle. For my project, he gathered
a group of Vietnam veterans from his healing circle to receive
HT, as well as, a couple of elders to be there for support.
I brought my husband, Ken, a medicine man for the tribe, and
asked my HT mentor, Linda Thomas, to help me offer treat-
ments. There were six veterans, two family members of veter-
ans, and two elders. I gave a short explanation of Healing Touch
before we started. My husband would brush down the vet-
erans with the eagle feather fan after my initial Healing Touch
assessment, and again, at the end of the session -- after the
nal HT assessment.
Working on the veterans was a very intense experience. All the
veterans had post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from their
experiences in Vietnam. Some of them looked old for their age
and some seemed angry, some had substance abuse problems
and all had many physical problems related to war injuries. The
Healing Touch treatments transformed them.
During the assessment, it was noted that all of the chakras
were very compromised so I began each session with either a
Chakra Connection or Full Body Connection depending on their
physical symptoms. Following that, I found several techniques
to be very helpful for PTSD. Mind Clearing seemed to help
the ashbacks, nightmares, anger, headaches, and distorted
thinking. One veteran stated that he felt like he had something
stuck on the side of his head. Magnetic Clearing was good for
substance abuse problems --to remove debris from their energy
systems.
Etheric Clearing (Level 3) was good for clearing specic energy
that I intuitively felt to have been brought back from Vietnam. I
set my intent to lovingly send this energy back to its home. I felt
this condition with several of the veterans on which I worked.
Magnetic Passes: Hands in Motion (MPHIM) helped balance
the energy system. I was able to coach one veterans spouse
to do MPHIM on her husband whenever she felt that he was

getting agitated. I felt that it was good to educate the spouse or
other family members about the energy system and what they
could do to help.
Some of the veterans talked about their war experience and
some did not. When they did talk I was able to connect the symp-
toms and their trauma and how it affected their energy system
and body. In some cases I was able to help them understand
from an energetic point of view what the PTSD did to their ener-
gy system and how they could reframe some of their symptoms.
For example, the anger, which was needed for combat, did not
serve them anymore. This anger could be seen as a friend to
alert them when something was being triggered with the PTSD
or when they were feeling powerless. This awareness could
also help them handle their emotions in another manner and
help shed the self-appointed label of an angry person. Most
of the veterans felt or were told that the PTSD would never be
cured. It became clear that the PTSD had become an integral
part of who they are and how they see themselves. It has been
so pervasive in their lives that they continually see themselves
as the wounded veteran.
This project taught me a lot about the veterans and how their
trauma affected them. After the treatments, the veterans looked
younger, more relaxed, and happier. To nish the session, I would
always say welcome home. This was symbolic of the session,
in helping to bring them back to balance, to their center, and to
welcome them back to their greater home -- their country. At the
end of the day, the elders initiated a talking circle to offer some
words of wisdom. Everyone was able to express how they felt
about the day. The talking circle was very moving. It added an
element of the sacred which we already feel every time we do
Healing Touch. The day was a healing day for the group of veter-
ans as well as those of us who were there to do the work.
Every April, Larson and his family hold their Healing Circle
on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation at a longhouse in the
wilderness. This is open to all veterans and families who need
healing. I volunteer Healing Touch treatment sessions and often
work outside under a tarp by a river. It is the most wonderful
place to do healing work. The Healing Circle begins on a Friday
night with the lighting of the healing re which is kept burning
all week-end. On Saturday, classes and ceremonies are held to
educate, share, and heal the veteran and their families. Sunday,
a closing ceremony is held. It is a wonderfully supportive group
of people that get together.

Heidi Katchia Van Vliet, Two Bears, is a Healing Touch Certied
Practitioner and has a Masters degree in Social Work. Heidi
worked for 20 years with emotionally disturbed children and
their families, but now uses some of those skills with her Heal-
ing Touch. She has been doing Healing Touch work since her
rst class in 2001, and became certied at the rst HTPA con-
ference in Denver last summer. She lives in Oregon and works
with her husband, who is a medicine man, doing healing work
on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation with veterans, elders,
and families as well as having a small Healing Touch practice.
She is involved in the wonderful and supportive local Healing
Touch community and helps plan their spring and fall gather-
ings. She and her husband co-write a monthly article called At
the Crossroads, A Native American perspective on self-care.
Heidi and her husband spend much of their summer and fall
time in the high mountains on the reservation hiking, shing,
gathering, and taking photos. Heidi has a business called Two

How did a Hawaiian hotel queen nd herself
giving Healing Touch treatments while living
in a tent for a year on the 200 acre Omega
Institute of Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck,
New York? Kia Abilay knows well how HT
changes your life.
Employed in hotel management for 22 years, Kia took all her
Healing Touch classes in Hawaii and was a volunteer at the
Queens Medical Center in Honolulu. She is currently in private
practice in Woodstock, NY with a returning and growing clien-
tele at Omega. Because of the New York laws regarding touch,
Omega asked her to change the name of her practice to Energy
Rebalancing and Chakra Balancing. However, her bios and
brochures state that she is a HTCP.
I was grandfathered in since Healing Touch has been at
Omega for many years due to the tenacity and dedication of
Rita Kluny who introduced HT to Omega. Because of urgent
family demands, Rita had put out a call for someone to take her
place at Omega and Kia answered the call. Never in my life did
I ever think about living in New York.
I share my learning of HT and energy work with my individual
clients and refer clients to the HTP website to nd HT practitio-
ners in their home towns. Sessions for workshop participants at
Omega are done during the breaks and in the evening. I do a
max of six sessions a day. Between Omega and my own clients,
I offer over 500 sessions from April to October.
Kia offers HT presentations to the staff at Omega, people on
R & R, and has been invited on many occasions to teach at a
Spiritual Living Group in Croton on the Hudson. In February
2008 she spoke to a group at the United Nations. I give talks
at a library series on Sunday nights. Kia is currently enrolled in
a two-year One Spirit Interfaith Seminary to deepen my own
faith and connection with the Divine. She plans to bring Healing
Touch into a hospital chaplaincy ministry.
As the founder of Kia Kreations, Kia created Chakra Bear, the
rst in a series called Ark of the Empowering Animals. Tai Chi Ti-
ger, the second in the series is having a slow start, cost-wise and
time-wise. She is hoping to have someone pick up production.
Next in line will be Buttery Touch -- which Kia plans to dedicate
to Janet Mentgen. Other animals keep showing up - Massage
Monkey, Meditation Owl, and Aroma Skunk, among others.

I am presently teaching this amazing 11 year old Healing
Touch and assisting him in developing his intuition. Kia is still
in touch with some of the children she taught in her early days
at Omega. She feels particularly called to work with autistic
children -- communicating through Higher Sense Perception.

Kia also relates her experience following 9/11. People poured
into Omega --those who were in or worked next to the Twin
Towers -- families who lost loved ones -- families of reghters.
We set up prayer circles in the main eld and offered counsel-
ing and energy sessions for people who didnt know about their
families. The energy in their bodies was like nothing I had ever
felt before -- fear and terror. For years I could feel that in the
bodies of people from New York City.
No longer in her tent home, Kia now commutes from her home

Barb studied with Janet Mentgen in Denver in the 80s and was
in the rst group of Healing Touch Instructors. She has taught
well-over 200 workshops in the USA, Canada, and The Nether-
lands. Barb is retired now from acute care nursing and lives in
Seattle.
How many healers do you know, including yourself, who em-
barked on their healership journey because of benets they
personally received from an energy healing session?
After having taught Healing Touch classes actively for over 10
years, I have observed a common denominator as to what moti-
vates people to study Healing Touch.
The top reason I found that motivated people to study Healing
Touch was that they received a healing session that improved
their own life -- that one of their wounds - either physical, emo-
tional, mental, or spiritual - in some way, was healed or began
to heal -- that their pain was diminished or gone -- they felt
signicantly better -- and they wanted to share it with others.
HTP classes and the certication process offer tremendous
self-healing opportunities for the practitioner in training. When
practitioners are certied in Healing Touch, their ability to offer
the Healing Touch techniques and to hold the energetic space
for another to heal is so great because of the self-healing that
theyve experienced.
A Healing Touch Certied Practitioner starting in a professional
practice often begins with a small community of people that
they know, or who know them on a personal basis. Then the re-
ferrals start and the practice begins to slowly build. The amount
of exposure the healer has to the community through promotion
or education can effect how fast or slow their practice can build.
A great way to pick up speed in building a healing practice is
for the healer to focus on a specic population of people with
specic needs and market to that group. For example, they can
offer free lectures to, or attend local support group meetings of,
associations such as the Arthritis Foundation or Diabetes Asso-
ciation where people living with these conditions come together
for support and education. It is a great place to share Healing
Touch as a complement to their care.
An even greater way to swiftly build a healing practice is for
the healer to target and market to the folks who are dealing
with the same problem or challenge with which they them-
selves have lived.
When we look at this from a marketing perspective, one of
the most powerfully successful approaches to get business is
through story. If the healer is willing to share her/his success
story (in marketing materials, free introductory lectures, or
writings) then the possibility of attracting many from the same
population is extremely high. Having a niche target market is
one of the best ways to become successful. In addition, if its a
niche group who can personally relate to the presenter/practi-
tioner, then the success rate increases even more.
When we look at this from a healing perspective, there is no
better healer than the wounded healer who has walked in the
shoes of the healee. Understanding, compassion, and safety
are authentically delivered and show the true demonstration
of oneness.
The willingness of healers to allow their wound to be the gift
to the world -- by helping others with the same wound -- can
ensure success in healing and in business.

My Dad died of high blood pressure at 50, I
know I am next. How many times have you
heard someone tell you that the health con-
cerns of their elders would surely be visited
upon them? It may come as a relief and a
surprise to know that the relatively new sci-
ence of epigenetics reveals that belief sys-
tems have more to do with our health than
does our genetics.
Epigenetics is an emerging science that explores factors that
inuence the expression of our genes. Dr. Bruce Lipton, Dr.
Dawson Church, and Dr. Randy Jirtle are among the pioneers
of this science. Dr. Bruce Liptons book, The Biology of Belief
(2005), reveals the exciting news that our beliefs and our inner
environments have great inuence over our DNA; we are not
victims of our genetics; we are the authors of our experience,
often unknowingly.
Our genes respond to the environment of our bodies. Our belief
systems and thoughts create the environment in which our
genes exist. Our cells respond to each and every thought and
emotion by altering the chemicals they secrete. To test this, take
a moment to focus on a big, yellow, juicy lemon. It will only take
a minute to really see the lemon in your minds eye. Smell the
lemon, cut the lemon, and, in your imagination, squeeze some
lemon juice into your mouth. This tiny moment spent focus-
ing on a lemon causes ones mouth to water. Now, think about
where your mind spends most of its time. Stress, worry, frustra-
tion, and anxiety all cause chemical reactions within our bodies.
Stress chemicals become toxic to our health.
If your thoughts were being broadcast on a radio station would
you tune in? Would you knowingly expose yourself to the
negativity that rolls through most peoples minds? I think not!
On the upside of things, science is nding that changing our
mind can have a powerfully positive effect on our health. This
puts a new twist on Ecology! Ecology of Mind is choosing to
no longer pollute our inner environments with negative
thoughts and beliefs. Becoming aware of, and weeding out
mistaken ideas we have borrowed -- often unknowingly from
our parents and from society -- is powerful ecology for your
body and your future.
So, take stock. Pay attention to the many, many thoughts your
have during each day. What is the avor of these thoughts?
How do these thoughts make you feel? Now, think about these
thoughts -- take a step back and critically think about them. Do
you REALLY believe them? Do you WANT them to be true?
If not, then change your mind. Your health and happiness will
soon follow.
