Health and safety is a top priority for any business; but it is even more important in the construction
industry, where employees are at constant and severe risk of injury or even death. Therefore, whether
constructing a road, a house or a factory, a safety checklist should be reviewed for each worker on site to
ensure that the correct procedures are being followed.

Personal Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment (PPE) is a must for all site operatives, and workers without
basic PPE are turned away from site. PPE is, at the very least, a hard hat, high-visibility vest
or jacket and steel toe-capped boots. Those carrying out drilling works may need ear
defenders, while workers who are involved in cutting concrete and other materials will need
to wear a dust mask.
Safety Checks
All equipment must be regularly inspected to ensure that it is in good working order and in
good condition. A tool that malfunctions can present an extremely dangerous risk, and it is
therefore vital that inspections are carried out often--ideally, by a health and safety officer
employed by the main civil contractor, who will also ensure all hazards and risks on site are
minimized and eliminated.

Emergency Procedures
All site staff must know exactly what to do in the event of an emergency, such as who to
notify and where to assemble for a head count. This information must be conveyed to
employees by the site manager on the first occasion a worker visits the site.
Training
The site manager or health and safety officer must ensure that all workers on site who are
responsible for handling and operating machinery or tools have been sufficiently trained to
carry out these works. Proof of this may be required in the form of identification cards or
certificates. The main contractor may also decide to hold regular training sessions on site to

Keep your Eyes Open
In a construction zone, various objects can inadvertently enter the driving path. Keep your

Stay Calm

usually no place for you to pull over without endangering other drivers, so keep driving

At the beginning of construction zones, flag workers are posted to catch the attention of
drivers. A flag worker will usually be holding a sign that asks you to slow down or stop.
Watch for flag workers every time you enter a construction zone.
Merge in a Timely Manner
Going too slow or stopping during a lane merge can cause traffic accidents. Keep moving
and merge smoothly with the flow of traffic.

Every road construction site is different. However, there are rudimentary safety rules
which apply to all sites, in place to maintain the health and safety of both construction
personnel and the public.

On all road construction sites, there is an appointed Safety Officer who has the role of
monitoring and enforcing all safety procedures. OSHA Code of Federal Regulations Title
29 Part 1926 details the safety guidelines for all construction sites, and all sites are
required to have an OSHA compliant Safety Plan in place.
1. Protective Wear
o On road construction sites, protective gear such as hard hats, reflective vests and steel
capped boots are mandatory for all staff and visitors to the site. Additionally, specific
activities such as jackhammering may require additional provisions such as protective
earwear. Proper use of protective gear should be monitored by individual trade foremen and
the site Safety Officer.
o An emergency strategy is a crucial part of the safety of a road construction site. Evacuation
procedures must be posted in clear view at designated points throughout the site. In the
event of an emergency, appointed emergency wardens are responsible for executing these
procedures. Specifically trained staff members are also designated to administer first aid
where necessary.

Hazard Identification
o There are a multitude of hazards which can threaten the safety of site personnel, such as
electrical, mechanical, trip or fall hazards. Frequent site checks are carried out by the Safety
Officer, and in minor cases, hazards will be eliminated on the spot. More serious offenses
may require that the site needs to be closed, for example, to clean up a chemical spill.
Security
o For safety reasons, is it essential to monitor who is on site at all times. Permanent staff are
required to undergo an induction process which explains the rules and responsibilities on
site, after which they are issued a security pass. Any visiting staff such as civil engineers are
required to sign in and out of a log sheet when on site. In the event of an emergency, the log
sheet is used to account for all personnel on site. Perimeter security is also essential.
Fencing and security personnel are used to make sure that members on the public are not
put in harm's way and to reduce the number of traffic incidents.
