Be a Science Teacher
Many middle school and high school science
teachers are nearing retirement age. The demand
for science teachers at these levels is high.
Our Methods in Science Education courses
emphasize inquiry-based, interdisciplinary science
education, in line with state frameworks and
national standards.
We have a low major-to-faculty ratio, guaranteeing
that you can get plenty of individual attention.
Beneft from an interactive and friendly department
that cares about your future.

The Chemical and Physical Sciences Department
at Westfeld State University offers major programs
leading to the B.S in either General Science or
Chemistry, with a total of three different options for
those interested in teaching. Prospective teachers
must also complete the appropriate sequence
of education courses required by the Education
Department, including a practicum or internship,
to qualify for Initial Licensure.
A General Science Major offers programs preparing
you to teach at the elementary or middle school
levels. Students selecting either of these options
will develop a broad understanding of the sciences
by taking courses in astronomy, biology, chemistry,
geology, meteorology, and physics!
Option I (Elementary School) is appropriate
for students planning to seek Elementary or
Special Education licensure, and would be perfect
for those who are also interested in General
Science (grades 1-6) licensure.
Option II (Middle School) is intended for students
planning to seek licensure in General Science
(grades 5-8). This option includes more in-depth
study of mathematics, physics, and chemistry, and
more upper-level science courses.
The Chemistry Major offers a program with in-depth
study in chemistry, very suitable for prospective high
school teachers. Students completing our program
can go on to graduate school in chemistry or enter
careers for which a strong background in chemistry
is appropriate.
The Chemical and Physical Sciences Department
also offers minors in Chemistry and General
Science. Elementary Education students majoring
in Liberal Studies could also choose General
Science as one of their areas of concentration
within the Liberal Studies major.
Minors in the Science are
another great option!
