T
he Estes Valley
Library is pleased
to host storyteller
John Stansfield for a
series of events this Tues-
day, Oct. 28 as part of the
One Book One Valley sea-
son of events. Stansfield
will portray legendary nat-
uralist and wilderness cru-
sader Enos Mills for both
students and the general
public. The public presen-
tation will take place at the
library that evening at 7
p.m. Attendees are encour-
aged to come early to
ensure a seat.
During the day, Stans-
field will appear as Enos
Mills for students at the
Estes Park Elementary
School. The student pre-
sentations are inspired by
the acclaimed childrens
book High as a Hawk by
T.A. Baron. Accompanied
by beautiful illustrations by
Ted Lewin, High as a
Hawk tells the story of the
historic 1905 Longs Peak
climb of eight-year-old Har-
riet Peters and her guide,
Enos Mills. It tells of the
experience through the
eyes of child, honoring
Mills belief that nature was
the best of all classrooms.
Mills once wrote: Of the
two hundred and fifty-odd
trips which I made as a
guide to the summit of this
great old peak, the trip
with Harriet is the one I
like best to recall.
Stansfields evening per-
formance at the library will
evoke the remarkable
mountain life of Enos Mills
(1870-1922). From child-
hood on, Mills bond with
mountains and wilderness,
especially the Estes Park
area, inspired him to over-
come personal hardship to
become a successful speak-
er, writer, naturalist, busi-
nessman, and a driving
force behind the creation
of Rocky Mountain Nation-
al Park.
An award-winning author
and outdoors enthusiast,
John Stansfield presents
one-man performances
reenacting key moments
from the lives of remark-
able Coloradans. Following
his first-person portrayal of
Mills, the audience will be
invited to learn more about
the legendary Mills during
a question-and-answer ses-
sion.
