Boral4Builders - A NATIONAL BORAL PLASTERBOARD PUBLICATION
Boral building products and construction materials are designed
to meet the needs of our many customers, making a positive
and lasting contribution to the way people live - in particular
the requirements of increasingly demanding building codes and
regulations in relation to key environmental and sustainability
measures.
Sustainable development meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs. In other words - sustainable homes allow us to live well
now and ensure our children will too. By building better, more
sustainable homes we can directly reduce our impact on global
warming, save precious water resources and minimise waste to
protect our earth now and preserve it for future generations.
Boral is a part of the lives of most Australians, whether in the
home, at work or in public places and spaces such as roads, parks,
shopping centres, schools and hospitals. Boral is committed to
sustainability and to assisting builders, developers, architects
and consumers achieve their sustainability goals by providing
cost-effective, long-term building solutions and building products
for housing that particularly address:
energy and greenhouse gas emission reduction
water conservation
waste management
recycling

BORAL WELL PRESENTED AT THE
HIA BUILDING & BUSINESS EXPOS
This year for the first time HIA Building &
Business Expos have been staged in the
regions around Australia and, as with the
national HIA Expos in previous years, Boral
has been a major supporter of this initiative.
Boral displays at the Melbourne and Sydney
Expos showcased the latest products and
systems offered by the company and attracted
a lot of interest from the consumers and
builders alike.
The CinemaZone

room again added the

entertainment component to the Boral
stand and demonstrated the effectiveness
of the system in isolating the sound from
powerful home cinema equipment. Among
other Boral products demonstrated at the
Expo were the newly released FireWALL

area separation wall system and Quiet

Living

system from Boral Plasterboard,

Silkwood

timber flooring products from

Boral timber, Evolution

plywood products
from Boral Plywood, Expose

In September 2005 Boral Plasterboard issued an Industry Alert
in regard to fixing of ceilings to H2F oil treated Western
Australian Pine.
The Industry Alert was a precautionary measure based on
variable results produced by initial laboratory testing of
plasterboard stud adhesives on this type of timber.
Following completion of a comprehensive testing program
initiated at that time, Boral Plasterboard now amends its
specification for plasterboard ceilings on H2F oil treated
timber as follows:
Plasterboard ceilings on H2F oil treated
timber must be applied using one of the
following methods:
Direct fixed with a combination
of mechanical fasteners and stud
adhesives using 1/3rd fixing method,
provided the timber is aired for a
minimum 14 days prior to application
of ceiling linings (refer Figure 1. below)
Direct fixed with mechanical
fasteners only (refer Figure 2. below)
On metal battens or furring channels
using mechanical fasteners only
or a combination of mechanical
fasteners and Boral stud adhesives.
The above specifications apply in all regions of Australia
and are effective immediately. Failure to comply with these
specifications may void the manufacturer's warranties and
detrimentally affect the long term performance of the ceiling
linings.
Please refer Boral Plasterboard Installation Manual for
detailed installation instructions.

Boral4Builders - A NATIONAL BORAL PLASTERBOARD PUBLICATION
JULY 2007
With the ever increasing
competitive pressures and
ongoing labour shortages
in the building industry,
builders and sub-contractors
alike are always on the
lookout for ways to reduce
construction costs and time.
Whilst this quest for improved
effectiveness is totally
understandable and
commendable, regretfully,
sometimes it comes at the
expense of the quality. And
whether it is immediately
obvious or manifests itself
down the track, a compromise
in quality is likely to result in
an unhappy customer and
increased maintenance costs.
A case in point is failure to
comply with basic plasterboard
installation specifications such
as use of temporary fasteners
and maximum spacings
between the daubs of
adhesive in wall applications.
When wall linings are fixed with
a combination of adhesive and
fasteners, it is extremely
important to ensure that
plasterboard is held firmly
against the framing members
until such time that the
adhesive has cured and can
do the job itself. This time is at
least 24 hours under normal
drying conditions and can be
up to 48 hours under slow
drying conditions such
as low temperatures.
Boral recommends
the use of temporary
fasteners. These
fasteners should be
installed at every
second stud and should
be removed after the
recommended period to
avoid fastener popping.
Failure to comply with the
above specifications may
result in drummy wall linings,
particularly if the framing is
uneven or if a plasterboard
sheet has developed a bow
due to incorrect storage and
handling practices.
For the same reasons, it is
also important to ensure that
stud adhesive daubs are of
sufficient size (approx. 25mm
diameter x 15mm high) and
are at spacings not exceeding
the maximum recommended
(300mm for walls). This means
at least 4 daubs of adhesive
across a 1200mm sheet.
All too often we see wall linings
fixed to (often sub-standard)
framing with insufficient
number of adhesive daubs or
temporary fasteners (if any!).
While this may not present
an immediate problem, the
plasterer and the builder must
be aware that the quality of the
wall has been compromised
and that they are exposed to
an increased risk of expensive
rectification works.
General layout for a combined
adhesive and fastener fixing
is shown in a diagram below.
For detailed plasterboard fixing
recommendations please refer
to Boral Plasterboard Installation
Manual and other relevant
publications.

In the last issue of Boral for
Builders we talked about the
importance of proper
background framing to
achieving trouble-free
plasterboard ceilings. In this
article we will look at the back-
blocking requirements and some
of the common pitfalls in the
installation of back-blocks.
Back-blocking was introduced
into the Australian Standards in
August 1997. Some plasterers
conformed almost immediately
but, unfortunately, for others
the penny still hasn't dropped.
The current Australian
Standard AS 2589.1:1997
Part 1 requires that for Level
4 finish (default level for
domestic construction)
back-blocking is required on:
All ceiling butt joints
Ceiling recessed joints in
any area containing three
or more recessed joints
Wall butt joints longer than
400mm and less than 2m
above the floor.
Specifications for Level 5
finish are even more stringent,
with all ceiling recessed joints
required to be back-blocked.
The above back-blocking
requirements will be
maintained in the revised
AS 2589 due to be released
later this year.
AS 2589 also specifies the
minimum back-block sizes and
installation procedures for butt
and recessed joints. In addition
to back-blocking methods
outlined in the Standard,
Boral developed a proprietary
stitching batten that greatly
simplify back-blocking of butt
joints (refer diagrams below).
Whichever back-blocking
method is used, adherence
to specification is a must
in achieving a trouble-free
plasterboard ceiling. Any
reduction in back-block sizes
or adhesive coverage (as shown
in the photographs below) will
jeopardise the effectiveness
of back-blocking in controlling
cracking and may void the
manufacturer's warranty.

Achieving trouble-free plasterboard ceilings
