SOLIDWORKS INSPECTION
CALYPSO - CMM DATA IMPORT

FILE FORMAT
Calypsos standard report for the measurement data is a Microsoft Excel file. When the file is generated, it
also creates a chr, fet, and hdr text file. The file compatible with SOLIDWORKS Inspection is the chr file. Here
is an image showing the files that are generated in the Calypso directory for one part.

The following is from the Calypso help file regarding saving the measuring results:

COLUMN HEADER IDENTIFICATION
Including a column header is good practice for easy identification of what the values represent. Calypso
automatically includes the column header. A default column name is included in the import template to match
the default from Calypso. If you change the default names or dont include the column header, the template
will need to be adapted to match your file format convention.
nominal = Nominal
actual = Actual
uppertol = Upper Tolerance
lowertol = Lower Tolerance

AXES IDENTIFICATION
In Calypso, the axis is identified in the TYPE filed of the file. Since Calypso allows the user to define the TYPE,
using the predefined defaults will help you standardize your measurement reports. All AXIS used will need to
be defined in the settings. Axes are listed in the appropriate measurement type. For example, all diameter axes
identifiers need to be listed separated by a comma in the Diameter Axes box (shown below as: Diameter, Dia).

AUTOMATIC BALLOON RECOGNITION FROM CMM FILE
For a balloon number to be automatically identified, a comment line for the feature will need to be added that
follow this simple comma delimited format:
[ITEM ID, AXIS(optional), MEASUREMENT NOTE(optional), SPECIFICATION NOTE(optional)]
Examples:
[ITEM 3]
[ITEM 12,,,TP 0.5m|A|B|C|]
[ITEM 12,TP,AT 18.0 DIM. (ITEM 1),TP0.5m|Am| 2 PLACES]

1. The first location is to identify the item (balloon) number from your drawing. Must be
identified with the word item (e.g. ITEM 12).
2. The second location is to identify which axis the item number relates to (e.g. TP). The second
location is OPTIONAL for Calypso.
3. The third location is to identify any notes you want conveyed in your report for the
measurement result - i.e. the actual (e.g. AT 18.0 DIM. (ITEM 1). The third location is
OPTIONAL.
4. The fourth location is to identify any notes you want conveyed in your report for the
specification - i.e. nominal information - plus any GD&T feature control frames you want
reported. The fourth location is OPTIONAL.
After fully programming a Calypso feature, configure required (corresponding) characteristic as per print
specifications.
To enter balloon identification into Calypso (refer to image below numbered areas)
1. Open Characteristic editor, select characteristic and open its setup window.
2. Click Comment button
3. Enter instruction string into Comment field of name/Comment window as required. Refer to General
description section above for details and examples of instruction strings. Note, in the image below, the
D51 reference should show as ITEM 51.

GD&T BONUS IN CMM FILES
Any bonus identified in the CMM output file will be automatically retrieved, and included in the calculations
for determining if the position is in or out of tolerance. The bonus is automatically calculated by subtracting
the useruppertol from the uppertol.
