Q: what is Poorna Gyatri mantra?

om |
bhurbhuvassuva? | - vyah?ti-s.
tatsaviturvare?yam | - first pada(line)
bhargo devasya dhimahi | - second pada(line)
dhiyo yo na? pracodayat || - third pada(line)
Pur?a Gayatri means an addition of "paro rajase savadom" as the last line in add
ition to the existing three lines.
First three lines are Gayatri. I am referring only to pada-a (lines) and I have
excluded vyah?ti-s. Therefore, the first three lines belong to Gayatri mantra an
d the last line is paro rajase savadom.
Vyah?ti-s should be prefixed to this mantra. Here is the mantra. This mantra is
available in Tripuratapinyupani?at.

There are only 7 Gayatri mantras in Upanishads - Rudra, Ganapti, Nandi, Shan
muga (Kartikeya, Garuda, BrahmA and Vishnu. Narasima Gayatri, Shakti Gayartri ar
e also in Upanishad. However, there are innumerable Gayatri-s for various gods a
nd goddesses, some of them are in Upanishads and other not.
I will try to publish important Gayatris in due course.

There are 11 Gayatri mantras in Mahanaraya?a Upani?ad and there few few other Ga
yatri mantras available in other Upani?ad-s. I am not sure about your other two
issues. I will find out and let you know.
With regard to mulamantra-s, form of the deity is energized with certain combina
tion of mantras. Each letter of Sanskrit in combination with one or more letters
and bindu gives rise to a bijak?ara-s. For example, let us take kli?, which is
the combination of ka + la + I and nada and bindu. The bija kli? has certain pow
ers such as fulfilling desires, etc. Many such bijak?ara-s together generate pot
ency of the concerned deity. Each bijak?ara has different powers.

Which two versions you are referring to?
Jayanth ChandramouliSeptember 8, 2014 at 1:21 PM
I'm referring to these version
1:
om |
bhurbhuvassuva? |
tatsaviturvare?yam |
bhargo devasya dhimahi |
dhiyo yo na? pracodayat ||
2:
om tatsaviturvare?ya? |
bhargo devasya dhimahi |
dhiyo yo na? pracodayat |
paro rajase savadom ||
It can be observed that both the versions are slightly different from each o
ther and the first version is the most popular one, so is there any difference w
hen you chant the second one?
Regards,
Jayanth

The second one is mostly used in Sri Vidya tradition. One recitation of Pacadasi
mantra is equivalent to three repetitions of Turya Gayatri. It is also said that
Turya Gayatri gives liberation.
