THE HUNGER GAMES

Plot

The book starts with Katniss Everdeen wakes up on the day of the reaping that the
tributes will choose for the Hunger Games. Her father died in a mine explosion that
the years earlier. She goes hunting to the woods outside her district, District 12, with
Gale, her best friend.The districts female tribute selected Prim,Katniss's sister so
Katniss volunteers in Prims place.Then the male tribute selected. Its Peeta Mellark
and Katniss remembers that the years earlier, while she was searching for food for her
family in the garbage bins, Peeta gave her bread from his familys bakery. Katniss
and Peeta say goodbye to their families and go to a train for the Capitol. During the
trip, she and Peeta convince Haymitch, the person who is responsible for getting them
gifts from sponsors. Then, Katniss meets with her stylist, Cinna, who is designing her
dress for the opening ceremony. At the ceremony, Katniss and Peeta wear simple
black outfits lit with synthetic flames. The next day, Katniss and Peeta attend group
training and show their skills to Career Tributes.Later, the tributes interviewed by
Caesar Flickerman, a television host. In his interview, Peeta says that hes had a crush
with Katniss for several years.When the hunger games begin she is confronted with
many problems such as water, careers, Peeta, fire balls hurling toward her, mutations,
and so much more. Like she did a cooperate with Rue who is in District 11. But the
careers killed Rue.She has so many issues in the games that it is hard to decide which
one is her greatest threat. Her forbidden love with Peeta, the deadly trained careers
who have been waiting for this moment for years. The Game makers changed the
rules so that two people can win. Then Katniss finds Peeta who got injured by Cato.
Thinking of Peeta may die, she suddenly kisses him and for that romance Haymitch
sent a pot of broth.When they need to find food, Katniss found a small pile of
poisonous berries.Then they discover the body of a tribute who nicknamed Foxface,
and Katniss realizes she died from eating the berries. By this point Cato, who killed
Thresh, is the only tribute left, and Katniss decides to keep some berries in case that
they can trick Cato the same way. Suddenly the streams and the ponds dry up, and
they know the only source of water is the lake near the Cornucopia. Without any other
choice, they start walking to the lake. And they killed Cato. Just as Katniss and Peeta
think theyve won, another announcement made that there can only be one winner
again. Katniss or Peeta cant kill each other so Katniss takes out the poisonous
berries. Just as she and Peeta pop them in their mouths, the announcer shouts for them
to stop and let them both winners.After that they go back to the Training Center and
Katniss kept alone for days and when she let out, Haymitch warns her that shes in
danger.In their final interview, shes reunited with Peeta, who lost his leg and now has
a prosthetic. After, when Haymitch tells her she did great, Peeta wonders what he
means, and Katniss explains everything, including the romance strategy during the
Games. Peeta gets angry and hurt, but as they arrive back in District 12, they hold
hands one more time to greet the crowd and cameras.

Characters

Katniss Everdeen : She is the protagonist character in the story and the female tribute
of District 12. She is an excellent hunter and she is only sixteen years old.
Peeta Mellark : He is the boy tribute of District 12 and the son of a baker. He is kind
and loyal, and he loves Katniss and he becomes to get interest of Katniss during the
Hunger Games.
Haymitch Abernathy : He is Katnisss and Peetas trainer. He always drunk and one
of only two people from District 12 to win the Hunger Games (and the only one still
living).
Effie Trinket : She is the escort of the tributes from District 12. She cares her own
career.
Gale : He is Katnisss friend and hunting partner. Gale is the closest person to
Katniss.
Prim Everdeen : She is Katnisss little sister. She is small and gentle, and Katniss
volunteers in her place when her name selected in the reaping.
Mother (Everdeen) : She is Katnisss mother. After her husband died, she stopped
caring for Katniss and Prim.
Cinna : He is Katnisss stylist. He becomes Katnisss friend and shows Katniss to be
herself.
Madge Undersee : She is the Mayors daughter.She gives Katniss the mockingjay pin.
Mayor Undersee : He is the mayor of District 12.
Rue : She is the female tribute from District 11. Katniss and Rue become friends
during the Games.
President Snow : He is the president of Panem.

Setting

The story takes place in Panem and the time is indeterminate time more than one
hundred years in the future.

Conflict

Katniss must navigate complex personal relationships and learn how to survive in the
Hunger Games.

Climax

When the Gamemakers changed the rules again, Peeta and Katniss challenge the
Panem by try to kill themselves at the same time and be anyone the winner.

The genre of the story is dystopia. In greek it means non-place.

Symbols

Mockingjay, Panem, Katnisss dresses.
Mockingjays : Mockingjays become a link between Katniss and Rue, with the two
using birds to communicate. When Rue dies, Katniss decorates her body with flowers
for memorializing Rue, but also to defy the Capitol.
Panem : Panem is the country in which The Hunger Games takes place, and it
symbolizes a dystopian United States.
Katnisss dresses : Cinna designs the first dress to reflect the main industry of
Katnisss district, coal mining, and since coals purpose is to burn, Cinna creates a
dress that would be lit with synthetic flames. Her dresses give her etiquette : the girl
on fire.

Author

Suzanne Marie Collins was born on August 10,1962 in Hartford,Connecticut. She is
an American writer and novelist, best known as the author of The New York Times
best selling series The Underland Chronicles and The Hunger Games trilogy (which
consists of The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay). Suzanne Collins'
career began in 1991 as a writer for children's television shows.She worked on several
television shows for Nickelodeon. Collins resides in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, within
Newtown, Connecticut with her husband and their two children.She is a Roman
Catholic.

Comments

I read The Hunger Games whose author is Suzanne Collins. The type of the story is
action,romance,science fiction and also adventure. The story takes place in Panem
and District 12 and the main character is Katniss Everdeen, also she is my favorite
character. My favorite scene of the story is when Katniss saw the other tribute kill her
only friend in the Games,Rue, she suddenly killed the tribute.She run to Rue and sit
beside her.Rue wants her to sing and while she was singing,Rue was dead.Then
Katniss made a place with flowers for Rue. I like this scene because its so emotional
for me. In this story the best example of the inequality between rich and poor can be
seen in the way the tributes are selected for the Games. In theory, the lottery is
random and anyone can be picked. But in reality, the poor are much more likely than
the rich to end up as tributes. At the reaping ceremony, she wont allow herself to cry
in front of the cameras because she doesnt want to give the impression of being weak
and that proves us Katniss is a very strong girl. Also when you read the story you will
have question marks so you have to read the other books in the serie: Catching Fire
and The Mockingjay.In my opinion, this book was amazing. If you are into
fighting, romance, science fiction, adventure and that feeling where you can't put the
book down then this is for you. I thought Suzanne Collin is an amazing writer. I'm
going to start reading more books that she has published.
