Instructions for students of the Study Program Master Microbiology

The record sheet is given as a download to allow the students to track their personal study course and
to check success. All plagiats will lead to a grade of 5.0!
For the first semester:
During the first semester, three basic modules are completed. In substantiated cases, the board of
examiners can allow the exchange of one of the basic modules by one of the regular elective modules.
For the second semester:
Advanced Modules are chosen to acquire 30 cp. If individual obligatory elective modules with 5 credit
points are chosen, the necessary 10 credits can be achieved by combination of two modules.
The advanced modules are elective modules of own choice. For setting priorities also combinations of
topics are offered: Physiology of Bacteria (2.2, 2.3, 2.7), Mycology (2.4, 2.5, 2.9), Plant-Microbe
Interactions (2.7, 2.9, 2.13, 2.15), Biotechnology (2.2, 2.3, 2.10) and Human Pathogens (2.10, 2.11,
2.12, 2.13, 2.16).
An extra copy of the record sheet (see above, for the first semester) is used to notify the Deans Office
for Study Affairs, Frstengraben 26, of the choices of Advanced Modules taken by the student. This
is an official document which has to be handed in at the Deans Office at the end of the first
semester (winter term). Changes of these modules chosen to provide the 30 cp for the summer term
can be made until two weeks before the first examination in a module or until the fifth week of summer
term. All changes have to be made at the Deans Office.
Additional modules can be chosen, but have to be announced also on the same sheet in advance.
The grades of these additional modules will not be counted for the grade of the Master program.
Please be careful not to take too many courses in order to balance the necessary time commitment,
also for good grades! And: these additional modules must at least be passed, otherwise the program
is not finished!
Modules from other study programs will be included after mandatory mentors advise if they enhance
the interdisciplinary character of the study course. Examples could be aside from modules of
biological and biochemical programs (e.g. offered within the Master Programs Molecular Life
Sciences; Evolution, Ecology and Systematics; Biochemistry and Chemical Biology) specifically
Bioethics, Scientific Writing, Nanotechnologies, (Bio)Geosciences or Optics.
The counting of credit points acquired abroad is both possible and desired. To aid students with
interest in international studies in microbiology, links on the website to the International Bureau, to the
Erasmus-Programme, to the network of Coimbra-Universities, actual links (like RISE) and the offer of
an individual mentoring are published.
For the third and fourth semester:
Be careful to select a place for your Master thesis in advance. Usually, the two modules of the third
semester should already lead to the Master thesis and are thought to be best combined and already
performed with the supervisor of the Master thesis.
The Project Module examination on the entire field of microbiology is the basis of the grade in that
module. This examination can only independent of who is supervisor of the Master thesis be held
by Profs. Diekert, Wstemeyer, Kothe, Brakhage, Ksel or Hube.
Master theses outside the university (e.g., HKI, MPI) or outside the Dept. of Microbiology are possible.
However, be sure that you have discussed that with a mentor of the study program (Prof. Diekert,
Wstemeyer, Kothe, Brakhage) who will also act as module coordinator and the primary reviewer of
the thesis. The subject has to be Microbiology, no matter where the Master thesis is performed!
