1. Overview

The mobile communications unit (MCU) allows handheld wireless devices to connect to the internet. The MCU
provides internet connectivity via cellular (WWAN) and satellite phone services.

Medical first responders establish WWAN connectivity by simply opening the case and turning on the power. The
MCU automatically establishes a WWAN connection; no additional user intervention is required.

Barcode scanners, handheld PCs, and other wireless devices communicate with the MCU via the internal Junxion
Box™. This commercial off the shelf (COTS) Linux device provides internet gateway services for devices
employing the 802.11 protocol.

An Iridium™ satellite phone provides backup communication capability. If WWAN connectivity is lost, the user
can launch a PC based program which automatically dials the satellite phone. Once a satellite connection has
been established, data flowing to the wireless gateway is forwarded to the PC. The PC routes this data to the
satellite phone.

2. Communications

2.1. Data Communication Options

The following data communication scenarios are supported.

DATA ENTRY DEVICE GATEWAY CONNECTIVITY

Cell Satellite
Handheld scanner type 50 X X
Handheld scanner type 900 X X
PC X X

3. Ruggedness and Survivability

The MCU is housed in a ruggedized, sealed case that is water and chemical resistant. The case is equipped with
a pressure equalizing valve.

The case can be stored on its back or on its side. The MCU case can support the weight of other units, allowing
MCU’s to be stacked.

Cabling is minimally exposed to the end user to prevent breakage or damage. Cabling is routed to minimize
repetitive strain that could lead to conductor failure. The cell phone antenna and cable is covered to prevent
breakage or damage.

To prevent trips, the MCU internal power breaker is rated at 10 times normal operating current. MCU operation
requires 1.5 amp of continuous current. The internal power breaker is rated at 15 amps.

MCUs can run on battery for over four hours (no AC voltage required).

Users have visual indication of battery voltage, and the associated battery energy available.

4. Environmental
The case admits zero water leakage when exposed to a simulated downpour test. This test is conducted by
washing the case with a garden hose for several minutes.

MCU components can operate in the following temperature ranges:

Device Operating temperature range (°C)

Panasonic Toughbook-18 PC * +5 / +35
Iridium 9505A satellite phone -10 / +55
Junxion Box JB-110b 0 / +60
Clickit Base cellular amplifier -30 / +60
Pelican 1600 case -10 / +99

Note that the Toughbook-18 is not required for cellular communications.

5. Transportability

Page 3 9/21/2007

The MCU can be carried by one person, and has easily accessible handles.

Wheels can be added to the kits (as an option).

6. Readiness for Operation

The MCU is operational (via cellular connectivity) with only 4 steps:

1. Open the case

2. Turn on switch
3. Monitor Junxion box lights to verify connectivity
4. Plug in MCU (if power is available)

A digital power meter is visible so that battery life/strength can be monitored.

The MCU has a tightly fitting connection to the external 120 VAC charging power supply. This electrical fitting is
protected with a water resistant cap.

The MCU is able to supply power to all components for a minimum of 4 hours of uninterrupted use.

7. Connectivity
WWAN connectivity can be established by simply turning on the MCU.

Antennae are provided for 802.11, cell, and satellite.

The cellular signal is amplified.

Satellite phone connectivity can be established by double clicking a shortcut on the PC desktop. There are no
unneeded shortcuts on the PC desktop.

8. Documentation
The MCU has a quick start guide and a troubleshooting guide.

9. Maintenance
MCUs must be routinely charged (if batteries are to be effective)

Software on laptop must be kept current (IT support function)

All batteries are field replaceable. The satellite phone and PC batteries can be replaced by EMS users. The
internal power supply battery can be replaced by a hardware specialist.

10. Certifications and Standards

All power related components including the power supply and cables are UL listed.

All communications equipment complies with applicable FCC regulations.
