paDugoopura or gaali goopura. In the history of Bhagavathi it is said that
they broke open the tower on the western side. It is said that the Birammar
deity broke the walls of the tower with his weapons

sharabha. These structures were earlier mounted on temple carts and later
brought and installed here

dwaarapaalaka infront of the garbhaguDi

joogi purusha - According to tradition their joogi purusha was a sanyaasin
who breathed his last on this holy seat of deities. From the shape of the
figure it could be gathered that he was a sanyaasin of the Natha faith

The stone wall on the outside of the sanctum sanctorm

These deities called saptamathrakeyaru (seven mother Goddesses) are a rare
phenomenon. They are present only in two places of our district 1. here and
2. Seneshwara temple. Such big stone statues are rare. Mahishamardhini
among them is a later addition. The other mother goddesses are Dwarahi,
Narasimha, Indrani, Kaumari, Samanthaka

This is an edict of the period of 2nd Devaraya, also called Proudadevaraya.
The period is approximately 15th century A.D

gadatiirtha or deevarakere. This is a holy tank, where devotees bathe after
bathing in the sea, before entering the temple.

The entire temple complex of Somanatha temple appears from seashore as
though it is situated on a rock
bobbarya staana near the Someshwara beech side. Right side - ayyakayi

The next ritual is puuvari enna. The Àchamars' perform a purificatory
procedure of sprinkling water on themselves and seek permission to visit the
temple. They pray before the main Bhagavathi temple and then stand before
all the other temples in the complex and offer flowers and player. Now they
receive the oil. The whole procedure is called puuvari enna
The paatris goto the after ritual of receiving oil

Ritual bath of the paatris

First they bathe in water in which back of atti wood boiled. Then they wash
themselves in water

1. What is your Name ?
Vasantha Belchappada, Adka Doddamane.
How long have you been paatri ?
Sixteen years.
Which deity has attracted you ?
aNNappa panjurli.
Of which deity do you become the oracle in bhagavathi centre ?
Of the same deity.

What are the rules of purity to be observed here ?
The headman of the village inform us about the darshana. From that
moment we observe purity. We must obstain from eating meat and drinking
liquor.
2. Naveen Belchappada
Uchila House, Somehswara
You assumed the role of a paatri just yesterday. Were there any
indication of this earlier ?

I was in Bombay earlier. There I got into a trance. I came to my native
place. They brought me to this place. Whenever I heared the music of the
temple band, I used to get into a trance. Then it was clear which deity had
selected me as the medium.

So whenever you head the temple music, music you got into a trance. Do
you feel a similar mental state today ?
No, not today.

How do you feel after you have been initiated into the role of a
Belchappada ?
I feel much much better.

What are the rules that you have to be observe ?
There are rules about how I should behave myself, where I may go,
where I am not expected to go etc.

Who is your Guru ?
Beera Belchappada.

Are you permitted to go to others centers too ?
There are eleven other places (staanas). If, in the absence of the paatri
there they invite me, I can go, provided. I get permission from my Guru.

How many years have you been serving as paatri ?
This is the third year. Twenty two years ago, When I was in Bombay, I
got into a trance. There was a Mukambika shrine there. I had not known
about this earlier. During the navaraatri festival I got into a trance. I did not
have much faith in God in those days. I had worked in a film company. I
had been an assistant director. I had also acted in one or two films.

In which films ?
In Suhag Sindhu Manoj Kumar the hero there. I was also assistant
director in this film. I had also worked with K. Balachandar.

Are you doing any job after becoming a Belchappada ?
No, I don't have any job.

For your living ?
God will be incharge of it. There are ten members in our family. I am
the 11th member.

You have been serving as Belchappada in this shrine. Do you get any
remuneration ?
Our people in Bombay have instituted a fund for the sake of paatris. The

interest is sent us every year. This amounts to about 750 Rupees per year.
This doesn't help me in any way. Four to five times a month I must come
here from Kasaragod. Every travel costs me about Rs. 35 or 40. I receive
Rs. 5/- here as my remuneration.

For which deity do you act as the paatri ?
For the main deity paaDangare bhagavathi.

Would you tell us something about her ? paaDangare does it refer to the
name of any holy place ?

Not from any place. As far as I know they have come from the South.
There are eleven shrines for our community. Adka and Udyavara are on this
side of the remaining 9 on the other side the biggest bhagavathi is supposed
to be the bhagavathi of Ucchilangotu.................

They (she) came to Vamanjur. Then this mother goddess said "I have
followed you from that place to this spot. But you don't seem to be ready to
give me a shelter. You must show me a spot to stay on. "This mother is a
little short-tempered. So they said that if she promised to.............

they would show her two place. The mother had a hesitation. This is a
place where mother is called father and father is called appa (father is called)
amma (mother) and amma (mother) is called father. She didn't want to stay
in such place. So they chose paaDangare and bhagavathi - these two places
for the Goddess. So runs the story.

Was it paaDamgare bhagavathi who went to the seat of Lord Somanatha
and made him speak ?

This was not the achievement of only paaDangare bhagavathi. Here there
were ammuTTi bhagavathi, biirammara daiva. There was also the role
played by mocheri caamuNDi and the role of kallangare caamuNDi. All of
them together asked for a habitation here. On this occassion Somanatha is
said to have kept his eyes closed. He had known that two or three women
and two men were approaching him. He had been doing penance inside a
place called rudrapaDe. This is ancient temple. The five durgas approached
Lord Ishwara When he was performing penance. They asked for space. So
that got them place of abode.|6943

How many years have you been functioning as bhuuta impersonator ?
I started as bhuuta impersonator when I was fourteen years old.

Is there any region assigned to you where you function as bhuuta
impersonator ?
Yes, My region is Ujire village.
In how many rituals do you take part in a year ?
In over sixty rituals.

When does the season start and when does it end ?
It begins in the month of Ponnu (kanya) and ends on the 10th day of beesha
(meesha) in summer.

Which bhuutas do you impersonate ?
pilicaamuNDi, koDamandaaya, lekkesiri, muDthraye, kallurTi the respective
deities in different places. In Ujire I impersonate "ullaklu".

Is there is any restriction that you are not expected to impersonate a
particular bhuuta ?

There is no restriction as far as I am concerned. Some say that we should
not represent female bhuutas.

Do you have to perform in "neemas" or "koolas" every day ?
Not every day. Once in two or four days I am called.

What is the duration of a neema ?
One neema losts on night. Sometimes there will be two or three neemas on
consecutive nights.

From whom did you learn this art of performing the impersonator's role ?
From my paternal uncle, my father's younger brother. In this village I
succeed my father as impersonator. In Ujire my uncle succeeds my father.
But after my uncle I will take charge. I have also learnt from my father.
From my uncle I learnt the practice of Ujire and Koyyur.

Are there any formalities to be observed before taking on the role of an

impersonator ? like bathing in consecreted water (kalasha) ?

This is a must in Ujire and Koyyur. For small services in the village there is
no need. But for bigger services, particularly to royal bhuutas, purificator
kalasha water bath is a must. This is the tradition.

For many years have you been playing the role of royal bhuutas ?
For nearly forty years.

How did you learn it ?
By observation and remembrance. I have learnt in any formal manner.

How did you learn the respective sandhi (oral epics) ?
By learning over and over again and by learning it by rote.

Does your son also perform as bhuuta player ?
No.

Is there any custom of observing purity(celibacy) before the day of
performance ?
yes. Suppose tommorrow the neema takes place. This evening, after the
dinner I wash myself completely including the head. Then I am not
supposed to take any food. Naturally on these days I should refrain from
drinking Toddy or Arrac.

How much do you earn from one performance ?
That depends on the place where I perform. In some places it is one and half
big measures of rice, in some it is 7 small measures, else where it is four
small measures.

Is it the same rate as in the past ?
No. now it is different. It is like increased wages. If we got 25 rupees in the
past, now it has rise to 100.

Do you quote your remuneration or do they pay you on their own, and
handsomely at that ?
We don't insist on any amount. But they too are considerate. They see the
prevailing conditions and reward us acccordingly. On occasions of festivals
like the new harvest feast they give us 7 small measures or 4 small measures
of paddy, if we visit them. Thus no question of demand aresis.

Does your son learn this art ?
No, I haven't taught him the art of performing in nemas.

Do you want to teach him ?
Yes. He is the only son. If i don't teach him.

Which is the biggest neema in which you participate ?
posalthaye of Ujire and pancadurga of Koyyur. The last one lasts for five
days.

Suppose you are not able to perform in the neema, can you assign the duty to
somebody else ?

Not in Koyyur or Ujire. Elsewhere it is possible. Suppose there is none to
take over from him he can assign it. Otherwise no. It is hereditary, you see.
Suppose there is impurity in the fimily like birth or death. Then the neema
can not bed held. It has to be held on a later occasion, again.

Interview with Mangura Parava about koDikaTTuni:
What do you call this procedure ? "koDikaTTune" (Securing the twigs).

Why do you follow it ?
It is a way of ensuring that only I should be plucking the fruit of these trees
etc. I invoke the protection of a deity and secure the twigs. This is called
"koDi".

How do you secure it ?
The tender leaves of th tree "kasarka" and tender coconut leaves are secured
on the fruit trees, like this. This is a koDi secured in the name of a goddess.
I lay my trust in her and put this tie.

Which goddess is it ?
It is the goddess of the place where we are working.

Do you follow any magical rites when you follow this procedure ?
No. I fold my hands in prayer and put the knot myself.

Now nobady is else is expected to touch it ?
Yes, Even the members of the house are forbidden to touch if. If I lay off
this knot, any body can climb the tree. Till then nobody excepting me
should touch it.

Why do you specially select the leaves of kasarka tree ?
That is how it has got the name of koDi.
Who used to tie this twig earlier ?
I saw my father doing it and I learnt it from him.

Now you have put this knot. I don't know. I happen to pluck the fruit from
the tree what is going to happen ?

You will see the outcome in some form or other. If one pick up a fruit that
has fallen there will be no harm. But if one climbs the tree and plucks the
fruit the eveil effect will be there sooner or later. I have fastened this koDi
on mango and jack fruit trees. If in ignorance or deliberate folly some one
tampen with the tree they get problems. Then they come and report to me.

What kind of problem ?
If nothing else, they will get severe cold or fever. So far they have not
touched mine. They are afraid of doing so.

According to legend a muslim business man Ali by name coming from
Kerala was a practitioner of black (magic) and was also a womaniser. As he
became a menance to the village the deity of the place Bhagavathi caused
him to vanish from the earth and allowed him to be worshipped as a
subordinate deity with herself Details about this legend were collected and
recorded.

Ummalli, a muslim woman consults an astrologer and finds redress in the
form an appropriate offering to the made to aali bhuuta. She pays the tribute
to aali bhuuta from whom she receives prasadam (blessing)

A ritual colled preeta biDikind (Malayalam, preeta biDisuvudu - Kannada)
meaning feeling the victim from the possession of the spirit (of the dead)
aali bhuuta asks the name of the subject and wants to know if he needs the
spirit.

If the subject says yes he is given "something" covered in a white piece of
cloth. He takes it in the company of the possessed belcappaaD (priest)
and throws it into the sea. When after bath he returns to aali bhuuta and
receives blessing he is freed from the affliates.

The sacrificer (sacrificing priest) seeks the permission of the gathered public
for the ritual and receives the knife from the chief priest

The sacrificing priest severs the head of the pig with the help of the sharp
knife. The procedure is called dukru kaapta in Marati language

vessels placed on the fire place. This will be used to prepare the body
for skinning. The dead bodies of the pigs one placed on a texture of woven
twigs

Boiling water is powred on the bodies of the pigs. The hair on the skin is
shaved off with a knife

The fowls are put into the fire and roasted. The procedure is called koori
karuvavune

The pigs are ninced into meat. The process is called ajakkalo malpuni
(22:39)

There is changing of prayers infront of the house. Devotees have gathered

Holy water (tirtha) is given to people who wear bashma (ashes) on their
foreheads as per the custom

The torch is transferred to the dancers by the priest

The dancer with the torch in their hands go round the raised platform once,
chanting simultane only the goondolu sandhi. They come to the yard

The goondolu dance is on. One of the dancers chimes the cymbals, signs the
sandhi and goes on the dance movements. The other dancers, with the
torch in their hands, dance in renison, following his foot steps. The
movements are both clockwise and anticlockwise. The dance rounds are
odd in number as 3 or 5 or 7. After each round they apply oil to the burning
torches

In front of the seat of mother goddess, the oracular priest gets into a state of
possession

In his possessed state the priest joins the company of the dancers, collects

the torches from the hands of the dancers, holds them in his hands and
moves in his state of possession

Still in his trance, the priest whirls the torches round his head. The flames
almost torch his hair

The master of the house also gets into a trance

The possessed priest displays his supernatural prowess and gives his
oracular message

The priest in possession returns the torches to the dancers

The darshana or possession comes to an end with the return of the oracular
priest to the seat of Mother Goddess

Another oracular priest parashurama gets ready for trance, by clasping a red
strap of cloth around the waist

Before getting ready for the possession the priest touches the hands of the
other priests by way of soliciting their blessing

Permission is being sought from parushurama for Video recording the
performance

The purpose of the video recording is explained. Parashurama gets into a
trance

Once again permission is sought from the priest in possession. He grants
permission

The priest in possession moves from in front of the throne of mother goddess
to the outer yard

He takes the torches from the goondolu dancers and scorches his skin with
the flame. He performs many such supernatural feats

darshana with the torches held on the head

The oracular priest asks about the purpose of offering the sacrifice and

The torches are returned to the dancers

The priest in trance holds a burning wick in hand and places it in this mouth,
closes the mouth suggesting the action of eating fire

After this wick service, prasaadam is distributed to the devotees present and
an oracular follows

Enquiring the devotees in trance and offering them consolation

Offering the tender-coconut to the priest in possession. The priest now are
oralce of Parashurama offer his succour and support

Blessing given to those who have vowed to offer services

Parashurama grants his protection and blessing (prasadam) to those who
have offered oil for the service

The oracular priest bless and gives prasadam to two youngsters who have
got into a state of possession in the course of this service

He is taken and made to lie on a mat spread on the ground. They fan him
