REQUIREMENTS

------------
* A Windows-compatible operating system
* 75MB free disk space
* Administrator rights
SEMI-PORTABLE MODE (Default When No Program Argument/Handle Entered):
------------------
1. FIRST USE: Run "!Launch OCD!.exe" with Admin privileges to start using the di
ctionary (Admin rights needed to write to the registry).
2. SUBSEQUENT USES: Run "!Launch OCD!.exe" to open the dictionary.
The dictionary will temporarily unpack in the temporary folder "%tmp%\OCD3" - an
y preexisting folder on this location will automatically be deleted. On program
exit, the dictionary will remove itself.
INSTALL MODE (Requires Install Path As Shortcut/Comand-Line Argument/Handle):
------------
1. FIRST USE: Type the below into the Target field of a shortcut, or in a comman
d-line window (both need to be run with Admin rigts to write to the registry):
"<your path to the program>\!Launch OCD!.exe" "c:\OCD"
When done, run the shortcut or command-line directive and the program will be
permanently installed in the given folder (e.g. "c:\OCD").
2. SUBSEQUENT USES: Go to the install folder (e.g. "c:\OCD") and run "Versabook.
exe" to open the dictionary.
Everything written to disk is written to the given folder, apart from the regist
ry update. Any preexisting folder on this location will automatically be deleted
. If you need a shortcut to the dictionary, simply create one for "Versabook.exe
" which is located in the installation folder.
NOTES: While paths without spaces and special-purpose command-line characters (e
.g. "&") do not require quotes, it's always best to use quotes just to be on the
safe side. Any paths containing spaces or special-purpose command-line characte
rs will however always have to be quoted.
REGISTRY CLEANUP MODE (Requires -regreset Switch As Shortcut/Comand-Line Argumen
t/Handle):
---------------------
Type the below into the Target field of a shortcut, or in a command-line window
(both need to be run with Admin rigts to write to the registry):
"<your path to the program>\!Launch OCD!.exe" -regreset
This will remove any previously written registry entries and will exit without i
nstalling/running the program.
NOTE: Type -regreset without quotes (unlike for paths where quotes are strongly
recommended) and using only lower-case letters.
ABOUT THIS DICTIONARY
---------------------
This is the CD-ROM version of the 3rd edition of the Oxford Classical Dictionary
. The 3rd edition was the last edition to be released in any kind of portable el
ectronic format (e.g. CD-ROM or ebook). The latest 4th edition is, as is nowaday
s the case with virtually all major Oxford dictionaries/encyclopedias, only avai
lable in printed book format and as a non-downloadable web-based subscription.
ABOUT THIS HARD DISK-BASED VERSION
----------------------------------
This hard drive-based version is a minor tweak of the original CD-ROM version. T
he compact size is simply due to the removal of installation-related content tha
t does not affect the program contents or performance in any way, including a bu
lky Internet Explorer installation folder. Additionally, the program folder has
been compressed in order to make this executable unpacker even smaller. The only
program-related component that I did decide to remove was a Versabook video tou
r program, "tour\tour.exe", which took a lot of space but which did not add anyt
hing either not already intuitively obvious to the average user or not also avai
lable in the included quickstart/help files. Versabook is used as the GUI fronte
nd for the CD-ROM version of the Oxford Classical Dictionary, but Versabook as s
uch was not specifically designed for it.
This program is not an installer as such, it simply unpacks a preinstalled dicti
onary but in addition to this it also checks the registry and if necessary appli
es a minor registry update to enable it to run without the installation CD. Once
unpacked to a permanent installation path, this executable unpacker is strictly
speaking not necessary any longer although this unpacker probably is more conve
nient to use. It has been tested and confirmed to run on Windows 7 SP1 (x64) as
is, with no additional manual steps or tweaks required. However, if installed wi
thout Admin rights, the "!Run Once!.reg" registry file (located in the installat
ion folder) has to be run once prior to using this dictionary, otherwise the dic
tionary will abort with the message that no CD was found in the drive. This mino
r registry tweak can be undone at any time by running the "!Undo Run Once!.reg"
registry file or by using the above described automated Registry Cleanup Mode. F
or anyone interested in what the full registry modification would look like afte
r a regular CD-ROM based installation, I have saved these changes in their entir
ety in the "Versabook.reg.bak" file (any file paths present there will of course
be installation-specific).
