SAINT RITA OF CASCIA CHURCH 3

REV. MSGR. RICHARD KREKELBERG
PASTORS CORNER
In this Sundays Gospel passage from
Matthew, Jesus enunciates to his
hearers The Two Great est
Commandment sLOVE OF
G O D A N D L O V E O F
NEIGHBOR. A few years ago one
of our parishioners shared that this
gospel passage reminded her of a 97-
year-old neighbor lady who had
expressed missing her previous level
of involvement and social life,
wishing that she could do more. Lo
and behold soon after, the same
parishioner and her husband received
an invitation to come over and meet
the new neighbors who had moved
in on the other side of the ladys
house. Liking the new neighbors
very much, she just thought it would
be great to introduce them, so she
got all dressed up and hosted a
little gathering that brought old
timers and new together. I ask you,
do you think God was smiling about
this or what? If 97 is still a very
acceptable age to set a good example
about how to live the two greatest
commandments, what must God be
expecting of us who have a few
more rows to hoe before we sell the
farm?

This wonderful experience shared by
one of our St. Rita members sparked
a number of similar examples of
living the love of God and neighbor
and of how the tiniest of efforts can
effectively bring about the rich fruits
of greater hospitality and community.
This past weekend, for instance, was
our annual Harvest Festival here at
St. Rita. A gathering and fundraiser
that had become known, more or
less, as a school event, has now
become one of our most significant
parish community building events, all
because of a deliberate effort to
simply say All are welcome! What a
difference in attitude about our
neighbor (and about WHO is our
neighbor) can be made, with just a
small realization of how things really
are and then coupled with a small
dose of creativity. Whether it is a
diaper drive for St. Francis Center
or World Mission Sunday, the gospel
is always widening our horizon to
understand that love of God requires
love of neighbor.

This two great commandments
gospel also draws my attention and
heart to the recently launched Synod
on the Family in Rome. Pope
Francis has been so inspiring in his
words that affirm a bold reformation
in the Churchs pastoral care of all
Gods children. Initial reports of the
Synods laying out of an agenda for
the year-long process ahead, did not
match up with the later published
written text in Italian. With Jesus
preaching the parable of the good
Samaritan and the woman at the
well, for instance, one would think
that a wide circle of inclusion of
communion with Jesus would be so
obviouseven simple. But, alas and
alack, 2000 years of wearied monk
scribes in the middle ages and of
putting the bible and tradition under
a microscope, could certainly explain
how things might have gotten a bit
complicated along the way. Let us
not slow our prayers for the Synod
fathers and mothers. Let us also not
lose sight of Pope Francis concerted
effort to include the whole Church
the whole Body of Christin this
Holy Spirit guided convocation on
the Churchs meditation on the
family, and, perforce, on WHO IS
OUR NEIGHBOR.

So much of living the Good News
and of living the love of God and
neighbor is a matter of using the gift
of imagination that the Creator has
given us. Kudos to the 97-year-old
lady who did just that! Pray with me,
too, that our current efforts to
inform our parish of the immediate
and long-term challenges that face
our parish, will be met with the same
God-given imagination so that we
may preserve St. Rita handily and
steadilyone caring parishioner for
his or her neighbor at a time!

This Week-
The Solemnity of All Saints

The saints are our spiritual guides,
our companions on lifes journey.
Their experiences show us the path
we are to take in our own lives.
The Catholic Churchs veneration of
saints dates back to the beginnings
of Christianity. Yet Catholic saints
are not just figures from ancient
history, but have lived during our
lifetimesand their example and the
process toward beatification
continue to make news today.

The earliest certain observance of a
feast in honor of all the saints is an
e a r l y f o u r t h - c e n t u r y
commemoration of "all the
martyrs." In the early seventh
century, after successive waves of
invaders plundered the catacombs,
Pope Boniface IV gathered up
some 28 wagonloads of bones and
reinterred them beneath the
Pantheon, a Roman temple
dedicated to all the gods. The pope
rededicated the shrine as a
Christian church. According to
Venerable Bede, the pope intended
"that the memory of all the saints
might in the future be honored in
the place which had formerly been
dedicated to the worship not of
gods but of demons."

The Anglo-Saxon theologian
Alcuin observed the feast on
November 1 in 800, as did his
friend Arno, Bishop of Salzburg.
Rome finally adopted that date in
the ninth century.

Did you Know? Talk
with your children about
safety at school. Back-to-
school does not have to
mean back-to-worrying.
Though safety inside
school is ultimately the
responsibility of the principal and
school staff, parents can take a few
basic steps to ensure a safe school
experience. Talk with you child about
safety. Be specific.

Talk about instinct and paying
attention to funny feelings of fear.
Explain what to do if he/she doesnt
feel safe (find a teacher, call 911, etc.)
Make sure your child knows how to
contact you or a trusted neighbor who
is likely to be at home.

THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEOCTOBER 26, 2014 6

St. Rita
Capital Campaign

Q: We hear a lot of talk about supporting our
ministries and our Mission through the Capital
Campaign. How will the Campaign support the
ministries and the Mission at St. Rita?

A: The buildings support everything we do at St. Rita.
They provide a place for us to come together in
communion at Mass. They also provide space for
ministries to meet and live out the Gospel call to love
each other through outreach programs that serve the
needs of our parish and the local community at large.
They also provide space for our children to receive a
Catholic education and for ongoing formation
programs. Our buildings serve as the foundation for
our many ministries and outreach programs as well as
providing a gathering space for many community
activities. They provide space for prayer and activities
that fulfill our mission as parish and school.

However, here at St. Rita our aging buildings are much
in need of tender loving care. Our facilities need
attention now so that we can continue to serve the
needs of our parish and school into the future.

This Campaign will provide an opportunity to repair,
restore, and rebuild to improve the physical
environment where we pray and meet, where we
educate our children, and where we participate with
fellow parishioners to discover Gods grace. We need
a physical environment that is minus hazards, free of
leaks, reliably air conditioned and heated, is accessible
for people with special/extra needs, and that provides
the necessary safe and secure space to support present
and expanding ministries/outreach.
