Reduce, Reuse, Recycle- Understanding Your House-
hold Waste Here’s a quick breakdown of the topics to cover
when it comes to reducing the waste you produce at home:
Energy: There is a finite amount of energy available from tra-
ditional (non-renewable) sources such as coal and oil. Develop-
ing alternative, renewable energies (such as solar, wind and
geothermal) helps to reduce our dependence on non-renewable
resources to power our lives.
Water: Water covers 71 percent of the Earth’s surface, but
relatively little is suitable for consumption. Every time a drop of
water goes down the drain, it becomes unsuitable for consump-
tion unless properly treated.
Solid Waste: Because landfills are so tightly packed, it takes a
great deal of time for material to decompose. The easiest way
to reduce solid waste is to reduce your consumption of daily
products. Be cautious of what you buy, and whether anything
you are going to put in a trash really belongs there.

Our Sunday School is on Christmas Sea-
son recess. Classes will resume on Janu-
ary 10th. Our Children's Liturgy of the
Word continues to meet each Sunday at
the 9 am Family Mass. All children are
welcome to bring non-perishable food
items and participate in our gift procession at our 9 am

Do you remember where you were and what you
were doing last year at Christmas? How about three years
or five years ago? How about, for an even number, ten
years ago? The older I get the more I realize that I have
lived (statistically speaking) through more than half of the
Christmases I will ever see! Although I don’t remember,
roughly, the first three or four Christmases too well, I do
remember the ones after that. The Frank Sinatra of Mex-
ico, Vicente Fernandez, sings, dentro to pocos abriles mi
vida sera un milagro, “it will be a miracle if I’m alive in a
few more April’s.” It sounds awkward in English but it is a
Spanish saying (I think!). Anyway, the point is, whether
you like Christmases or not (or maybe something in be-
tween), chances are we will experience less than a hun-
dred of them. An example of someone who probably
would prefer another Christmas, rather than the present
one, is a soldier or military person, especially if he or she
is on active duty. As a child, Christmas seems to take for-
ever to come around and for many adults it seems like
the earth is just picking up speed so that the days and
years go by faster and faster each year! Anyway, it’s nice
to see everybody hopping on the Christmas bandwagon,
including stores, music stations, Internet, etc. Some peo-
ple have a superficial relationship with Christmas in reli-
gious terms but some of us try to take the person and
message of Christmas seriously. If you are reading this
you probably find yourself in the latter category. So the
challenge is out there. The Creator of the universe (and
of human beings) and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, has
thrown us an eternal lob ball to use a baseball term. The
ball is just hanging out there nice and slow and soft com-
ing over home plate. Remember, keep your eye on the
ball (look to Jesus and God), steady (perseverance), full
swing (put all your heart, mind and soul into it), follow
through on the swing (don’t give up the faith)…home run
(God is with you and blessing you)! All those elements,
and more, of hitting the baseball remind us of the correct
technique and effort that is needed in order to hit the ball
into the rafters! That’s not counting the hours of daily
practice (prayer time), training camp (living as a disciple),
practice games (daily Mass) and games (Sunday Mass).
Although I don’t get to watch baseball much anymore I
remember seeing some professional ball players, even
recently, making the sign of the cross just before they go
up to bat or just when they get up to the plate to take
the first pitch. Now, I can never know the ultimate motive
for that gesture, it is clear that it is the sign of the cross
(Catholic) and not a baseball sign-those are way more
complicated! So the game eventually ends, as does the
season. And here we are back to Christmas ’09 and on
the verge of starting 2010. I do with you all a 2009 Merry
Christmas and a 2010 Happy New Year! Thank God for
2009 (or that it’s over!) and may God bless us in 2010!

Always Keep an Up-to-Date Photo of
Your Child
Picture this: A good photo could save
a child’s life. One of the most impor-
tant tools for law enforcement in the
case of a missing child is an up-to-date (take a new
one every six months), good-quality photograph. The
photograph should be a recent head –and-shoulders
color photograph of the child in which the face is
clearly seen. It should be of school-portrait quality,
and the background should be plain or solid so it
does not distract from the subject. When possible,
the photograph should be in a digitized form and
available on a compact disk (CD), as opposed to just
a hard copy. This minimizes the time necessary to
scan, resize, and make color corrections before dis-
seminating it to law enforcement. The photograph
should have space for accurate, narrative descrip-
tion useful to identify the child, such as name, nick-
name, height, weight, sex, age, eye color, identifying
marks, glasses, and braces. For more information,
