n abundance of
natural beauty has
inspired many couples
to tie the knot in very unique ways in the
Florida Keys. Area wedding planners have
coordinated events on land, sea, air and even
underwater.
Before setting the date, plenty of couples
have chosen amusing or amazing ways to
get engaged on this island chain. Frank
Murphy of Sky Dive Key West says
that while it is not common, a few
couples have become engaged
on a sky-diving adventure. He
warns would-be grooms that it is
probably wiser to propose after you land.
The symbolism of shoving your bride-to-be
out of a plane at 10,000 feet, while shes still
considering whether to say I do, just might
not work in your favor.
Susan Cabanas of Cabanas Aerobatics
Unique weddings in the Florida Keys
ROB ONEAL/The Citizen
This Hemingway-loving couple was married on stage at Sloppy Joes one of Hemingways favorite watering holes. They exchanged vows
in front of a crowd of Papa look-alikes during Key Wests annual Hemingway Days.
4 WEDDINGS 2014
says that her company has been hired on several
occasions to fly a Will you marry me? banner along
the shoreline, while a happy couple enjoys brunch
or lunch in one of Key Wests elegant waterfront
eateries. She says, however, that aerobatic weddings
are rare. Cabanas suggests the best strategy for a
biplane wedding would be to place the couple in one
historic plane, and the officiant who may double as
a videographer in a companion plane. Vows would
be performed over the radio, perhaps with friends
and family listening in from the ground.
Wedding Planner Nadene Grossman Orr of Weve
Got the Keys has worked on many theme weddings.
She said for a planned scuba wedding it was a
challenge to find a wedding officiant also qualified
as a dive master and underwater photographer. It
was easier, however, to arrange weddings around
a literary theme (at the Hemingway House and/or
Robert Frost cottage), or musical theme (onstage
at Hogs Breath Saloon during the Key West
Songwriters Festival).
Bobbie Camp of Keys Breeze Weddings arranges
many theme weddings. In fact, she reports that
up to 20 percent of the events she coordinates
are planned around a pirate theme. Captain Jack
Sparrow is a sought-after wedding officiant, and he
happens to be her business partner. Camp says that
theme weddings are especially popular with couples
heading in for second, third or fourth marriages.
In Islamorada there are many one-of-a-kind
modes of transportation for the bride and groom.
Ask about a Clydesdale horse and carriage ride
through the back streets of town, or depart your
beachfront reception on the Nautilimo, a boat that
happens to look like a pink Cadillac.
Finally, a unique wedding does not have to involve
costumes or safety equipment. A sand bar service or
a sunrise wedding offer simple settings for couples
who seek serenity. Grossman Orr described a sunrise
ceremony on Sunset Key. Vendors, accustomed to
afternoon and evening event schedules, were not
thrilled by the idea of setting up in the wee hours of
the morning, but the setting was sublime. The family
gathered as the sun rose over the horizon, and two
dolphins jumped, as if on cue, just when the bride
and groom said I do.

Pretty paper
BY STEPHANIE PINO
Special to The Citizen
A
s a bride, your wedding
stationery should be as
carefully selected as your
dress. Every detail is important. Why you
may ask? If you think about it, your invite
is not just a pretty card. From the moment
your guest receives your announcement card
down to the thank you card days after the
wedding, they are following the story of your
fairy tale.
Danette Baso Silvers, who owns Invites by
Danette, feels just the same about wedding
stationery. You are asking someone to
be a guest at what will be one of the most
important days of your life, and the invitation
should be treated as such, she said.
6 WEDDINGS 2014
Therefore, you want it to represent
you as a couple on your special day;
and the greatest thing about that is
there is no end to what you can create.
This year, vintage trends will
continue to be in full swing. Baso
Silvers sees burlap and lace,
paired with peaches, creams
and pinks continuing to be
prominent for stationery
this year. Of course, floral is
always a go to for brides.
Baso Silvers beautifully puts
together what the trend for this year
will be.
We will see intimate garden
ceremonies with stationery inspired by
hardy succulents, and lavish ball room
receptions with stationery inspired by
variegated damask patterns.
With that, she continues to point out
being that it is the Florida Keys, sunset
and beach themes will forever be an
ongoing trend.
There is another mode of sending
invitations and wedding planning
that is growing, which is not exactly
textural or tangible. It is the use of
social media to communicate with
guests. Wedding websites are now
providing the availability to invite
guests. It is a more casual approach
to invites and definitely more
affordable.
Baso Silvers believes that
it is a little more impersonal
but can be used to your
advantage. Instead of relying
solely on social media you
can send your wedding invitation
and include a website on the invite.
This is perfect for a couple planning
a destination wedding like one to
the Florida Keys. Usually, the website
includes a virtual RSVP option, hotel
information, travel information and
anything else to help your party have a
stress free trip to your big day.
It is important to remember that
your wedding invitation will set the
tone of your wedding. Your stationery
should always coincide with the
theme of your wedding. It should
create anticipation and excitement.
It should always be full of important
details as well, such as dates, dress
code and location.
A wedding is very personal and
monumental, said Baso Silvers.
Therefore, your wedding invite
should be as well. Wedding stationery
is not just limited to invitations and
placement cards. Today, wedding
stationery includes everything from
the welcome sign at the reception to
the menus, all the way to the thank
you cards weeks after the wedding.
The stationery you use tells your
wedding story.
When asking Baso Silvers what one
of her favorite projects was this year,
she said it was save the dates that
she created to look like an old train
boarding ticket. Guests were excited
to receive a fun save the date for a
ceremony that was going to be taking
place in an old steam locomotive in
West Virginia. It goes to show you that
the possibilities are endless; so get
creative, and share your story.

For that intimate, low-key
wedding on the beach, Fort
Zachary Taylor Park in Key
West and Bahia Honda State
Park in Big Pine Key cant be
beat. Fort Zachary Taylor is
situated where the Gulf of
Mexico meets
the Atlantic
Ocean
and is
considered
by many to
be the best spot to take in
the famous Key West sunset.
Bahia Honda is an award-

Fort Zachary Taylor and Bahia

park system and are subject to
certain regulations and fees.
Maybe a beach wedding on
a secluded island served with
a side of luxury is more your

Island Resort & Spa, located
off of Little Torch Key and
accessible only by boat or

Wedding packages on this
magical island cater to

to party with your friends
and family on a tropical
island until the wee hours
of the morning, Pigeon Key
should be at the top of your
venue list. This five-acre
island, which is nestled
under the Old Seven Mile
bridge in Marathon, can
be reserved overnight with
accommodations ranging
from a newly renovated
guest house that sleeps
eight to several rustic
bunk houses that can
sleep more than 70.
Lush tropical gardens
and winding brick paths
make the Audubon House
and Tropical Gardens an
ideal location for an island
wedding without the sand.
Located in the heart of
Key West, this elegant and
historical home can host
up to 130 guests in its
magical garden filled with
orchids, palm trees, exotic
vegetation and beautiful
antique copper lanterns for
when the sun goes down.
For a wedding as unique
as you are, put on your
wedding dress and tux
and your scuba gear. Amy
Slates Amoray Dive Resort
in Key Largo will be more
than happy to host your
underwater nuptials
thats right underwater.
After you have exchanged
your vows in front of sea
turtles and angel fish, return
to land and the resort for a
waterfront reception with
breathtaking views.
Finally, if tying the knot
on a boat is more your
style, there are several
sensational options for a
wedding on the water. For
those who prefer to hoist
the sails, the Schooner
Western Union, one of the
oldest working wooden
schooners in the United
States, is ready to sail you
and yours into wedded
bliss. Prefer a little more
power to your boat? The
Sunset Watersports Party
Cat, a state of the art
power catamaran, is ready
to cruise the crystal clear
waters of Key West while
you and up to 148 guests
dance the night away.
Now even though this
small sampling of perfect
spots to say I do in the
Florida Keys may have you
ready to book the venue,
there are some things to take
into consideration before
signing that dotted line.
Before I even suggest a
wedding venue to a client,
stated Jen Levering, director
of Weddings for Weve Got
the Keys, I find out about
their style and personality,
what would best suit
them and where they have
pictured themselves getting
married. Other factors to
take into consideration,
according to Levering, are
how many people will be
attending and the budget of
the wedding.
All of these factors will
determine what location
will help make your dream
wedding a reality.

The wedding jewelry you
choose should all depend
on the style of your dress.
A simple dress can
call for more
elaborate jewelry,
and an elaborate
dress, simple
jewelry. Most brides
who get married in the
Florida Keys wear jewelry
to represent their wedding
location. Whether it is
diamond starfish earrings
or fresh water pearls. Small
diamonds and precious
pearls will always be a
wedding staple that will
never go out of style. Most
brides opt for custom bridal
jewelry. This is a perfect
option because whatever
you design would be a
representation of you.
If this is something you
are interested in, you need
to remember you should
not wait until the last
minute to pick out your
jewelry. Designers need
time to create your custom
piece, just as the seamstress
needs time to make
alterations to your wedding
dress. The best time to begin
looking for your jewelry is
when you have decided on
the style of the dress you are
looking for.
Your wedding jewelry
should also be a style that
you would wear again. It
would be a shame to go
through so much when
picking out your jewelry to
only wear it once.
When it comes to the
brides jewelry, something
new that Peggy Russell
from Destination Wedding
Studio in Key West
has noticed is the
engagement ring.
This year, she
believes we are
going to be seeing
more engagement bands
without a large center stone.
Colored stones are definitely
getting more popular as
the years progress. Gold,
along with sapphires,
rubies and emeralds on
engagement and wedding
bands are starting to rise,
leaving diamonds to act as
accents instead of the main
stone. We are seeing more
heirloom-style jewelry as
well, which goes perfectly
with the vintage-inspired
weddings that have been
taking place this year.
When wearing a simple
dress, large statement
necklaces are in. Rows of
pearls for a necklace with
small stud earrings work
perfectly with elegant
strapless wedding dresses.
Russell has been seeing
a lot more statement
necklaces on bridesmaids to
accent simple dresses. Big,
bright, bold and beautiful is
perfect for the Florida Keys;
and with blushes, corals
and pinks being the colors
of 2014, gold statement
pieces with coral-colored
gems is something we will
be seeing more of; and

Domestic partnerships
BY CLAIRE HURD
Special to The Citizen
F
lorida is not among the 17 states (plus the
District of Columbia), where same-sex
marriage is currently recognized. However,
the City of Key West does provide residents and visitors
with the gender neutral option of establishing a domestic
partnership. A domestic partnership is
available to two adults who have chosen
to declare themselves to be part of
and share in a committed, loving and
supported relationship with each other.
A domestic partnership does not afford
couples the federal benefits of marriage, but it is recognized
locally as proof of a committed relationship. This may
provide benefits for employment, education and health
care purposes for partners and their dependents. A number
of municipalities across the country offer reciprocity,
acknowledging a domestic partnership established in Key
West as if it were issued in their own city.
To obtain a domestic partnership, both partners need
to be at least 18 years old and not married or a member of
another domestic partnership. Applicants agree to share
the common necessities of life, share a common primary
residence, and to be responsible for each others welfare.
Applicants can obtain a domestic partnership application
online, and then appear together at the city Cclerks office
to provide supporting documents, such as proof of joint
ownership of a residence, a vehicle or a bank account.
The charge for a domestic partnership is $50. An
appointment will assure applicants of prompt processing of
their registration, but walk-ins are welcome at City Hall.
Staff in the clerks office cannot recall an occasion when a
couple seeking domestic partnership presented at city hall
in bridal finery. However, staff is happy to oblige if a new
couple hands over a camera or smartphone and requests a
picture of the happy occasion.
There is no requirement for a ceremony to solemnize a
domestic partnership, but couples often choose to host a
ceremony and/or reception to celebrate their commitment.

Rings come full circle:
Classic styles are back
BY LAUREL TUOHY
Special to The Citizen
Y
our wedding rings are
made to last a lifetime
and to be worn daily
as a sign of your
commitment to your partner. It
makes sense that todays most
popular styles are classic settings
and cuts.
The same solitaire and cathedral
settings that their grandmothers
might have worn are what
brides-to-be are requesting for
their engagement rings in lighter
colored metals like platinum and
white gold. The touches of rose
gold that have lent an antique look
to rings over the past few years are
still often-requested flourishes at
jewelry stores Keys-wide.
Joel Angel, owner of Key Largos
Florida Keys Jewelry, mentioned
that a return to classic looks is
popular even in young couples
shopping for wedding jewelry. In
addition to the classics, he noted
Halo settings, one large diamond

diamonds, remain popular. He
called them a new classic.

t seems that every day we are
being given more and more
options for everything. We are
always on the go and always hungry
for different things.
The same goes for food. So why not
give the opportunity for your wedding
guests to enjoy different options of
food at your wedding? Providing
options for your guests actually
makes the event more interesting, less
monotonous, and more memorable.
Luckily for everyone, the ponderous
chicken or fish check box on the
wedding invitation response card is
as outdated as the floppy disk. Today,
there are so many people with different
eating habits as well. So its no wonder
why couples are using less of the
formal sit-down meal and more casual
forms of dining.
Food stations and heavy hors
dourves meals have been more
popular in recent years. A heavy hors
dourves-style dinner, what Debbie
Pierog from Caribbean Catering in
Islamorada calls a Roving Dinner,
at the reception or rehearsal dinner
provides a more relaxed and fun dining
experience for guests and the wedding
party. Caribbean Caterings Roving
Dinner provides tapas, also known as
small plates, to their guests.
With creative presentation and
creative food choices, the guests get
plenty of food and are full, but it is
in a more relaxed, casual, and fun
atmosphere, said Pierog.
The ability of having such a dinner
either at the wedding
rehearsal or the wedding
reception gives guests the option to
mingle more and feel less confined to
a table. It also provides the guest with
more food options.
Stations also lets guests eat when
they are hungry and stop when they
are full and possibly continue on
after all the dancing. Its perfect for
filling the stomach up of those who
are continuing their party after hours,
especially on the little island that rarely
sleeps called Key West.
With many brides looking for a
more rustic theme to their wedding,
simple meal preparations are what
are in. It seems dinners are including

Shai Baron, general
manager for Key Wests
Diamonds International,
agreed that couples are
shopping for classic ring
settings, though they often
come in looking for unique
diamond cuts.
For wedding bands,
simple slim yellow gold
bands have regained
popularity as well for both
men and women, while
eternity bands remain big
sellers for women.
One way to make a
classic, or even antique,
ring more personalized,
is to engrave a personal
message inside, according
to Wedding Planner Kate
Bentley. Another wedding
jewelry trend is ancillary
jewelry, said photographer
Nick Doll. That might mean
the bride and groom could
wear matching bracelets as
well as their rings or, as he
saw one groom do recently,
had a local jeweler design a
bracelet to match his ring.
In Angels opinion, brides
and grooms-to-be are tired
of chasing the trends and
buying up what magazines
tell them is the hot ring or
which one all the celebrities
are wearing because they
know that, in a few years, it
will look dated.
In the early 2000s, it
wasnt uncommon for
people to remount their ring
every few years. Now people
dont have the money for
that, he said. Classics are

ingredients. For example, raw bars are always going to be a
big part of a Florida Keys wedding. With fresh oysters and
Key West pink shrimp available year round, fresh seafood
will always be an option. It is exceptionally special for those
who travel from places such as the Midwest, where it is less
common and more expensive to come by. Wedding planner
Erik Baker from a Modern Romance says pig roasts have
been something hes been seeing a lot of as well, and that is
definitely rustic. He also believes that formalities are a thing
of the past. Today is all about options.
A great selection does not stop at the food. Who can forget
most guests two favorites, the open bar and the dessert? The
open bar is no longer just full of domestic beer and gin and
tonics. Craft beer and craft cocktails are definitely making an
impact. With the craft beer culture making a huge influence
in the world today, its no question as to why we are seeing
more of it at weddings.
Baker believes one thing to look out for this year is the beer
canoe. The beer canoe is exactly what it sounds like, a canoe
full of beer.
If one has not made it into the craft beer culture yet, Baker
says another option that is trending this year is personal
cocktails served in large decorative dispensers. What can be
more heavenly than sipping on a beautiful craft cocktail on
the happiest day in two peoples lives in the Florida Keys?
Both of these options are great for the guests because once
again, waiting in line for someone to make their cocktail is
something they will no longer have to do.
The dessert portion of the meal has also seen changes. It is
no longer just a slice of wedding cake for dessert. Although
the wedding cake is still front and center, more dessert
options are now accompanying the cake. Cupcakes, fresh
fruit and minipies and tarts are beginning to appear more.
Here in the Florida Keys, mini-Key Lime pies and coconut
desserts are always a hit.
With fresh seafood, pig roasts, and a great selection of beer
and desserts, there is definitely something for everyone to
enjoy no matter what their diet or preference. Food stations
and heavy hors dourves means less time waiting and sitting,
and more time mingling and dancing while at the wedding.
With this, there is no time for your guests to feel bored or
weary about the food or the drinks, and in the end, your
celebration will be dubbed the most delicious wedding they
have ever been to.

the feeling of Kate and Williams royal
wedding. On the island chain of the
Keys, though, weddings are often
actually outside, in the sand at sunset,
and instead of lining church aisles
with huge flowering trees, brides
weave flowers and greenery through
arches on the beach made of bamboo
or metal.
Ann Machesic, event planner at
the Key Largo Hilton, has seen the
nostalgic trend carried out in vintage
frames and candles in glass cylinders
at weddings at her venue lately. Candy
stations with glass or white China
jars are part of the vintage look, too.
One bride even provided an antique
cabinet to be used as a candy station.
Navy is crazy popular, too, and is
part of every other wedding we do,
Machesic says. The color goes well
with khaki and sand, a natural part of
many beach weddings. White or ivory
flowers in bouquets for the bride or
the bridesmaids are striking when the
stems are wrapped with a navy blue
trim.
Giant centerpieces are not as
popular as they have been in the past
for Keys weddings, and have been
replaced by low ones with lots of
detail, such as shiny metal, sparkling
gems, or tiny shells. A new trend for
2014 is special lighting inside the
centerpiece, remotely controlled to
glow warmly when the lights go down
for dancing.
Michelle Newton of Key Largo
Floral loves it when brides leave the
floral industrys predictions aside
and go with a more island vibe
for their Keys weddings. I always
enjoy when brides like the tropical
colors, fuchsia, orange, or purple and
flowers like orchids. According to
Newton, orchids can be expensive,
but Denbrobium orchids are the most
affordable.
Newtons wish for more vibrant
colors in wedding flowers might
just come true in 2014, at least as a
complement to the popular pastels of
the vintage look. The Pantone color
list, compiled through a survey of
fashion designers in New York and
around the country, features dazzling
blue and radiant orchid in addition
to the vintage pastels placid blue
and violet tulip, and suggests the
more vibrant colors wont replace
the pastels, but instead will make a
pleasing contrast with them.
Debbie DAmato, owner of Floral
Fantasy in Islamorada, sees an even
split between tropical flowers and
roses and peonies in the hundreds
of weddings she provides flowers for
each year.
If I had to pick, I would say that
there are more of the soft romantic
types now, with roses and glass
lanterns and rustic picnic tables.
Theres not as much call for shells
and starfish anymore. Lilies and
hydrangeas and babys breath have
become more popular than tropical
flowers, she said.
DAmato finds that orchids are the
best for use in arches on the beach
because they are the most durable in
the sun and heat. Also, fresh flowers
are popular for brides to wear in their
hair at a beach wedding because
theyre much easier to control than a
flowing veil, which can be a problem
on a breezy afternoon.
Popular items for bridal bouquets
are tiny framed pictures as
remembrances of special people.
Also, DAmato has seen many brides
use pieces of their mothers wedding
gowns to wrap the stems of their
bouquets recently. I guess if youre
not going to wear your mothers dress,
for one reason or another, this is a way
to include it in the ceremony.
Another popular way to wrap the
stems of bridal bouquets is to use
burlap and rhinestones, a plus for
brides who want to be on the beach
with a bit of bling.

hat would you say is the best part of a
wedding? For me, it is the wedding cake.
However, dont get me wrong; who doesnt
love an open bar? In spite of that, the wedding cake is the
most beautiful and eye-catching object in the
room, alongside the bride.
For centuries the cake has been used in celebration of
two people coming together in matrimony. It is a long-
standing tradition that dates as far back as the Roman era.
It symbolizes the couples love and unity as both bride and
groom cut the first slice together.
The wedding cake has always been a statement piece and
the main focal point in the reception. It may be intricately
decorated to mimic the lace on a brides dress, and look
as delicate as the boutonnire on the grooms tuxedo. In
recent years, the wedding cake has seen many changes,
breaking away from traditions such as simple white tiers,
which were developed to symbolize status and purity.
It has expanded from traditional fresh fruits, white, and
chocolate cake flavors, to daring bold flavors. Couples are
even incorporating different desserts, such as cupcakes and
other desserts to go along with their cake. It seems this year,
however, brides are choosing to have vintage and natural
themes for their weddings, which means the white-tiered
wedding cake is making a comeback only with some minor
tweaks.
The conventional white cake with small pops of color is
a trend you should look out for this year. Couples want to
return to the au naturel style bringing classic and organic
styles into their weddings. Tina Kamenel, director of private
dining and special events for Pierres Restaurant and The
Morada Bay Beach Caf in Islamorada, says she has not

28 WEDDINGS 2014
seen a Fondant cake in about a year. This is interesting
because with Fondant, you get clean lines and perfect
angles. Buttercream and other icings on the other hand,
provide that rustic, homemade feel that couples are leaning
towards.
When it comes to weddings in the Florida Keys, most
have always been very organic, with the sandy beaches,
open oceans, warm breezes and palm trees swaying in
the air. It is one of the prime locations for a destination
wedding. Most think that because of this, blue is the color
to have on their cake. However, according to Kamenel,
peach, blush and corals with shades of whites and greens
will be the colors of the year. She also said we are going to
be seeing orchids as the main flower.
Flowers have always been a big part of weddings; they are
no longer just for decorating the ceremony and reception
location. Flowers have been heavily making their way onto
wedding cakes. The shades of white that adorn cakes are
the perfect canvas to lay genuine orchids with just a touch
of color.
The long-standing tradition of the newly married couple
cutting the cake is one that will never cease to exist.
Therefore, having a cake, whether big or small, will always
be a wedding staple.
Luckily for the bride and groom they only have to cut one
slice together, making one-tiered cakes more popular today.
This makes room for other desserts such as cupcakes, tarts
or mini-Key Lime pies. Kamenel said brides love cupcakes.
Having other such desserts to accompany your cake
create more interest and give more options to guests. It
would definitely have people wanting to eat more dessert
especially your guests who have a sweet tooth like myself!
What is interesting about this going back to basics trend
that is popular today is that even though plain and simple is
what is on the outside, bold, bright and flavorful is what is
on the inside. Today, more and more couples are choosing
daring flavors.
The flavors of the cakes are becoming much more
interesting, such as Key Lime (especially here), red-velvet,
and coconut, said Kamenel.
It is amazing what flavors one can come up with when
choosing a cake. The possibilities are endless. Imagine
having a lavender-lemon and blueberry cake at your
wedding, or a cayenne chocolate cake. That would
definitely spice things up! Whatever your style, flavor, or
dessert option, it is all up to you. You can definitely have
your cake and eat it too.

he date is set, the venue
selected. The next big choice
on a bride-to-bes list is
something shes always dreamed of her
wedding dress. The 2014 bridal fashion
runways featured trends that will work
well for a Keys wedding, including rising
hemlines and sparkly embellishments.
The idea of tugging a long train
across the beach as she glides toward
her groom doesnt appeal to most
brides. The shorter dresses featured
by designers in 2014 should solve that
problem. Monique Lhuilliers
wedding version of the
classic slip dress floats
above the knee while
Nicole Millers strapless
wedding gown is above
the knee, also.
Sparkly
embellishments are
the perfect accent
to catch the glitter
of the sun at an
outdoor wedding.
In a shift away from
the plain lace look of
the vintage style, the
new trend includes
belts and bodices
adorned with
crystals that
will have
a dazzling
effect with
the sun
overhead. Recalling the glamour of the
20s with their 2014 wedding gowns,
designers Naeem Khan and Carolina
Herrera create a Gatsby-era party vibe
with their elaborate beading. Justin
Alexanders collection includes gowns
dripping with art deco inspired beading.
Oscar de la Renta wedding gowns
feature delicate details like flowers, polka
dots and petals over tulle. Marchesas
collection includes romantic dresses
with sheer sleeves and heavy beading.
Lydia Estenoz of Key West Bridal likes
a bit of sparkle for a beach wedding.
Headbands with rhinestones, pearls,
and glitter are popular for brides
right now. As the sun sets, all the
things that twinkle look really
nice.
Another look for less than
traditional brides is the
complete departure from the
traditional white gown in the
2014 splash of light lavender,
blush, and coral hues
shown on Vera Wangs
runway. Wang spoke
of pink as seductive,
pink as dreamy, pink
as sophisticated,
pink as strong, pink
as cool, when
describing her
colorful dresses.
Shades of pink in
every degree, from
petal, rose and peony
to vibrant coral,
are included in the
collection. Elizabeth
Fillmores smoky
gray is good for
a less striking
choice.
Although
Keys brides
usually go
for white or
off-white gowns in form-
fitting satin or chiffon with
lots of romantic lace, Estenoz remembers
a few brides with different preferences.
Some brides choose to have a bit
of color in their sashes, either blue or
pink with crystals and beads. One bride
had a retro, all satin dress in a beautiful
blush shade, something between nude
and pink. But the shoes are where most
brides show their personality lately.
Royal blue and sky blue are the colors I
see most often, the something blue for
their wedding. The pop of color makes
for fun pictures.
Traditional looks, white or ivory gowns
in mermaid styles and ball gowns in
varying lengths and levels of fullness,
are also part of the 2014 look, as well
as floral focal points in silk faille, hand-
draped tulle and organza. Overlays are
also a feature, whether they are tulle
with sequin lace appliques from Vera
Wang or floating and feather-lined from
Reem Arca.
High necks have been popular
recently, and theyre set to become even
more so. Sheer and lace high necks, seen
in old movies starring Audrey Hepburn,
will be featured along with high, halter
necklines, perfect for a destination
wedding because theyre chic while not
too heavy.
The back of the gown is a feature
of many Justin Alexander gowns this
season, from the deep illusion beaded
style to the sheer lace-trimmed back of
a gown with a plunging front neckline.
A gown with an interesting back makes
sense when that is what the guests will
be looking at as the wedding couple
exchange their vows.
Several designers left the flowing,
lacy, vintage style behind this year and
embraced a simpler, more streamlined
style. Sleek and modern, these gowns
look fresh, clean, but still romantic
because of the lavish use of silk. Brides
who want to play up the minimalist
vibe can opt for a graphic
accessory or a bold
headpiece, said
Brides Fashion
Director Rachel
Leonard.

no single website can provide the

Websites such as TheKnot.com, www.

Most importantly, before booking a
photographer, make an effort to get to
know them personally.
There is a modern trend toward
the photojournalism style of wedding
photography, which focuses on
capturing events as they happen
naturally. For a bride that is not
comfortable in front of the camera, a
traditional style photographer, who
takes more time to pose the bridal
party and guests, may be a better
option. A fashion photographer

Marathon-based photographer
Bob Summers of Florida Keys

Most of my clients request
a balanced combination of
photojournalistic and traditional
photography. Parents and
grandparents like traditional posed
photos, while it is important for
the bride and groom to capture the
emotional story of their day, he
said.
Photographer Tony Gregory of
Key West said, Find a photographer
that has the professionalism and
personality to leave their ego at
home and understand that it is
all about the couple, their friends,
relatives and guests. Equally, a
photographer needs an artistic
aye, experience and equipment to
produce quality images that will be
worthy of lifelong memories of your
special day.
Professional photographers may
follow one of several business
models for pricing. Many offer
hourly packages, which include
photography for a set period of time,
along with prints or digital copies
of a specific number of photos.
The longer a photographer works,
the more images will be available
to the client. Summers provides
post-production editing and
enhancements, prints, high-
resolution digital files on
CD, and a slide show with
musical accompaniment on
flash drive or online, along
with a copyright release.
The hourly rate for an experienced
photographer begins around $500,
inclusive of a specified number
of prints and digital images. You
should budget and schedule for a
photographer during the ceremony,
for pre-or post-wedding family
photos, and for several hours at the
reception.
You can sometimes save money
by steering away from packages that
include prints or other products
built into them. The main product
is digital images in full resolution,
and the rights to those images, said
Gregory.
Photographers will book up to
a year in advance of a wedding,
though most bookings are made
five to six months before the big
day. If you are making last-minute
arrangements, call around because
you may still find an excellent
provider. Agree upon a written
contract with your photographer,
setting forth exactly what services
will be provided, including
information about copyright, print
and digital products included in the
package.
Bookings throughout the Florida
Keys are particularly strong during
season, generally February
through April.

T
he most important part
of a wedding is the fact
that you are getting
legally married! In Monroe County,
the Clerk of Circuit Court is the
issuing agent of marriage licenses for
the State of Florida. You can register
for a marriage license during regular
business hours at the courthouse
in Key West, Marathon and in
Plantation Key.
Applicants must be eighteen
(18) years old to obtain a
marriage license in Florida.
Younger applicants require
parental consent, and in certain
instances, the consent of a county
judge.
No matter what your age, both
applicants must appear in person
at the time of applying for a
marriage license. A picture-type ID,
including date of birth, is required.
If either party has been previously
married, the exact date of the last
death, divorce or annulment must
be provided. Bring a copy of your
divorce decree with you at the time
of application.
According to staff in the clerks
office, the process of completing
marriage license paperwork takes
about 15 minutes. There is no waiting
period for out-of-state residents, or
for Florida residents who provide
proof of completing an approved
premarital class. A marriage
license costs $93.50 and there
is a discount for Florida residents
who provide proof of completing a
premarital class ($61). A marriage
license must be used within 60 days.
Authorized staff in the clerks
office are happy to solemnize
your marriage (perform the actual
wedding ceremony) on the spot
for an additional $30. There is even
a small room in the Key West office
where marriages can be performed
if the celebrants prefer privacy to the
hustle and bustle of the clerks front
counter. A basic ceremony takes
about 15 minutes.
There is often a surge in marriage
license applications during festival
weeks in the Florida Keys. You may
encounter and bride and groom
in biker leather in the clerks office
during Poker Run. On St. Patricks
Day, it is not surprising to see a bride
wearing green. During Fantasy Fest,
the courthouse staff has been called
upon to preside over costumed
weddings.
In Florida, regularly ordained
clergy, judges (active and retired),
the clerk, and deputy clerks of the
circuit court, and State of Florida
notaries may perform marriages.
The person who performs a marriage
ceremony must complete and return
the marriage license to the Clerk of
Court within 10 days, where it will
be recorded in the official records.
A certified copy is returned to the
newlyweds by mail, and the original
license is kept in the Office of Vital
Statistics in Jacksonville. The process
usually takes around three weeks.
Your wedding may be a gala event,
or a small gathering of friends but
the memories (and the tax benefits) of
legally committing to your true love in
the Florida Keys will last a lifetime.

For most, it is one of the most memorable,
magical days of their lives, filled with fond
moments of time spent with close friends
and family.
As enjoyable as a wedding can be, most
brides and grooms who have already tied
the knot can attest that a wedding is a
long, often tiring day. It is very easy for
energy levels to wane. To ensure you have
enough energy to last through to the final
good-bye of the evening, follow these
suggestions to remain energized.
Recognize your wedding day is a very
long day. Its possible to rise quite early
in the morning to begin prepping with
makeup, hair styles, wardrobe and more. If
the party is an evening reception, it could
last until the wee hours of the night. You
may find yourself up for nearly 24 hours,
when the cameras will be flashing and the
video rolling throughout. Naturally, youll
want to look your best throughout.
Get a good nights sleep the night
before. Get to bed early the night before so
you will get ample sleep and look rested.
It is understandable that nerves and
excitement may get the best of you and
make it difficult to fall asleep. If you often
grow anxious and struggle to fall asleep
before big events, talk to your doctor
prior to the wedding to ask if you can be
prescribed a one-time-only sleeping pill
that will ensure you get to sleep promptly.
Do not take this medication with alcohol,
and be sure to take it only if you can get a
full 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Otherwise, you
may experience medicine hangover.
Enjoy a hearty breakfast. At breakfast
on the morning of your wedding, consume

a combination of carbohydrates and
protein. The carbs will provide the
initial burst of energy you need to get
going, and the protein will keep you
feeling full. A combination of whole
wheat toast, fresh fruit and Greek
yogurt makes for a filling start to the
day.
Stay hydrated. Although drinking a
lot of water can result in more frequent
trips to the bathroom which can
be cumbersome for brides wearing
their gowns it is essential to stay
hydrated. Dehydration can result in
headaches, weakness and dizziness
and may make you feel cranky. Be sure
to consume water throughout the day.
Pack some snacks. The time
between breakfast and the cocktail
hour of a wedding may be significant.
In your wedding survival kit, be
sure to pack some easy snacks to eat.
Trail mix can be nibbled for a boost of
energy, and a banana can take the edge
off of hunger pangs. Avoid anything
messy that can drip onto clothing or
get stuck in your teeth. Arrange to
have snacks stowed in the limousine
or another mode of transportation so
that you can refuel on the way to the
ceremony or in transit to the reception.
Dont overdo it with caffeine. It may
be tempting to lean on an energy drink
or a super-size cup of coffee to give
you the boost you need. But caffeine is
only a temporary fix. After the effects
of the caffeine wear off, you could find
yourself more tired than before and
crash at an inopportune time during
the day. Instead, a brisk walk outdoors
may recharge your batteries. Afterward,
time spent on the dance floor enjoying
the reception will likely stimulate some
adrenaline to keep you going.
Eat dinner. When family is
beckoning and the photographer
needs to get yet another pose, it is
easy to skip dinner. Be firm with your
decision to enjoy your meal. After all,
you paid for it and it should not go to
waste. Besides, sitting down to dinner
enables you to rest and absorb the
atmosphere of the wedding.
Continue to drink plenty of water
throughout the night. Alcoholic
beverages may be flowing, but too
many spirits can compromise your
energy levels. Be sure to balance the
booze with hydrating fluids, such as
water or juice.
Weddings take up the entire day,
and it can be easy to succumb to a
lack of energy as the day progresses.
But by heeding a few tips, its possible
to remain in top form throughout the
entire wedding.

Beauty Tips for the Bride-to-Be BY CLAIRE HURD, Special to The Citizen
T
o maintain a look that is cool
and elegant in the heat and
humidity of the Florida Keys, the
services of a professional stylist are essential.
For a bride on her wedding day, makeup and
hairstyles need to be gorgeous and they need
to last for hours
Olivia Gootee of Baddest Beauty of Key
West specializes in on-site wedding hair and
makeup. Quality is key when you choose a
bridal stylist. On your wedding day you want
to look and feel flawless, she said.
Expert styling costs just a few hundred
dollars. It can be fun and relaxing, and it adds
value to any video or photography package
you choose. Select a stylist by reviewing
portfolios, speaking with them, and, of course,
by seeking referrals from friends, family and
other wedding vendors.
If you Google wedding stylists Florida
Keys, hundreds of options pop up, most
featuring photos of young brides with flowing
hairstyles and apparently flawless skin.
However, a stylists services are not limited to
a young and flawless clientele. Stylists work
with clients of all ages, on first, second and fifth
weddings. A bride at every stage of life deserves
to look their best on their special day.
Look for a stylist a year or more in advance
of your wedding date though it is possible
to find one on shorter notice, if necessary.
Discuss your wishes and your schedule with
prospective stylists, and inquire whether
the images on their webpage reflect actual
work done by their team. A bride should
select a stylist whose portfolio reflects
accomplishments, not just concepts. Make
sure your stylist is licensed as well. Some will
book wedding dates as far as three years into
the future.
A professional stylist has tricks of the trade to
cope with the heat, wind and humidity unique

to the Florida Keys. They will bring a
team to the clients location, equipped
with professional tools ranging from
airbrush makeup to extra strength hair
products to ensure that everyone looks
fresh and lovely all day long.
Some bridal budgets allow for a
planning trip in advance of the event,
so the bride can experiment with trial
styles and confirm details about the
venue, music and catering menu.
Stylists value an opportunity to try
ideas with the bride, but most are also
comfortable communicating by phone
and email in advance finally meeting
the bridal party on the day of event, to
complete a stress-free transformation
before the ceremony.
There are many beauty treatments
a bride may consider in the weeks and
months leading up to the wedding,
including tooth whitening, spray tans,
facials, manicures, extra eyelashes and
hair extensions. A stylist can provide
referrals, or even provide some health
and beauty services directly, but keep in
mind that most need to be completed
before the wedding day.
The stylist should ask, and the bride
should advise, about special needs and
requests when an entire bridal party
is going to be styled. Consider every
need in advance, and discuss the varied
types of hair a stylist will encounter on
the wedding day. Photographs help a
lot. Different products are required for
different hair types, and your stylist
needs complete information about your
wedding party in order to be prepared.
Most brides arrive prepared for
their destination wedding with the
gown, veil, shoes, hair adornments
and jewelry ready to go. A stylist can
provide advice if an adornment is
broken or misplaced along the way,
and she may avert a fashion crisis
with her knowledge of local vendors, or
a simple idea to use flowers instead of
jewels in your tresses. (And yes, there is
a full-service Key West bridal store, and
yes, women have found replacement
gowns at local department stores in a
pinch.)
On the day of the wedding, the
bride and other members of the
party should prepare for their
transformation by arriving with hair
dry and clean, and exfoliated skin. The
stylists will take it from there.
Engaging the services of a
professional stylist to ensure your
makeup and hair is just right is one
more step toward arriving at the
altar looking perfectly stunning and
feeling perfectly relaxed on your
perfectly special day.

THE PERFECT SETTING FOR
YOUR KEY WEST WEDDING
W
hether its for a couple on their wedding
day, a youngster just graduating high
school, or as a birthday gift to a
beloved family member, cash has become an
increasingly popular gift in recent years. Once
considered impersonal, cash is now a go-to
gift for shoppers whose foremost concerns are
putting smiles on their loved ones faces.
Those who still hesitate at the thought of giving an
envelope full of cash, take note: There are many clever
ways to give green that make cash gifts just as enjoyable
to give as to receive.
Steer clear of cold cash. Regardless of how thoughtful
it may be, a greeting card with cash inside does not
exactly elicit the warm sentiments synonymous with
special occasions like weddings. When giving monetary
gifts, gifters might
want to get a little
more creative. At
Plumfund.com,
thoughtful gift givers can set up a cash fund for their
loved ones free of charge. Contributors to this account
can pledge money in the form of cash or a personal
check at no cost, or make direct online payments into the
account for a minimal processing fee. Once the big day
arrives, recipients will receive their gifts and no doubt
appreciate the less conventional but far more creative
route chosen by their loved ones.
Gifters who make online contributions can do so
through Plumfunds integrated WePay solution, a simple
two-step system that makes it easy for recipients to
withdraw their money, make an electronic transfer to
a personal bank account, or choose a paper check, all
without incurring withdrawal fees. Recipients may also
choose to have their cash gifts immediately deposited
into their PayPal accounts.
Put it on plastic. In many ways, carrying cash has
become less convenient than swiping debit or credit cards
when making purchases big and small. This is especially
true when gifting recently minted grads or newlyweds
about to head overseas, where swiping a credit or debit
card is far easier than waiting in currency exchange lines
at airports or hotels. Gifters who want to make their cash
gifts even more convenient can purchase a prepaid debit
or credit card that recipients can use anywhere, whether
its buying trinkets at an overseas souvenir shop or
filling up the car with fuel on a post-graduation
road trip.
Pool your resources. Another unique way
to give cash gifts is to pool your resources with
fellow loved ones. Plumfund.com does not restrict
the number of people who can contribute to a given
account, making it much easier for family members to
pool their resources when gifting cash to their loved ones.
This is especially convenient when loved ones have a
wedding registry.
Cash has become an increasingly popular and
convenient option when gifting loved ones on special
occasions. Gifters now have a host of options at their
disposal to make their cash gifts more unique.

Have an effortless
wedding with
a wedding planner
BY CLAIRE HURD
Special to The Citizen
ROB ONEAL/The Citizen
46 WEDDINGS 2014
T
here is a lot of work
involved in setting up an
effortless wedding day.
Considering vendors for invitations,
gowns, locations, lodgings, music,
food, the cake and photos can be time
consuming, and you want assurances
that you have hired the best. For
these reasons and more,
advice and assistance
from a local wedding
planner is vital for your
destination wedding.
Nadene Grossman Orr of
Weve Got the Keys, says, There are
so many reasons to hire a wedding
planner. They have local knowledge
and connections in the community
with creativity and experience
working within a budget. Wedding
planners can pass along discounts
from vendors they regularly work
with and of course, we work to
customize your special day. A great
wedding planner will discuss your
plans and dreams, then use their
expertise to turn wishes into reality
within a budget.
When researching venues for a
destination wedding in the Florida
Keys, you may find that some
locations offer a comprehensive
package including food, beverages,
rentals, officiant, and even
photography, along with an on-site
coordinator for the event. These
packages can be a wonderful deal,
but do not confuse the role of an
on-site coordinator with your
personal wedding planner. An on-site
coordinator will have plenty of useful
information to help your planning
process, but s/he works for the
venue first and foremost. A wedding
planners loyalty lies with you.
Look for a local wedding planner as
soon as you decide that you want a
Florida Keys destination wedding. It
is vital that the duties of the wedding
planner are spelled out clearly in a
written contract. Starting out with
clear expectations, for both the bride
and the planner, will make the event
run as smooth as possible. A good
wedding planner will provide staff for
the duration of the wedding day
from set-up to clean-up.
While selecting a date for
your event, take into account
local weather. If you dream of
a September wedding, discuss
with your planner how best to handle
situations like a mandatory tourist
evacuation it happens more often
than any local cares to contemplate.
Only a Florida Keys wedding
planner has the contacts and
experience necessary to manage
events this far from the mainland.
Even the simplest beachfront
ceremony requires equipment such
as a PA system, chairs, flowers, a
bridal canopy and officiant. Rather
than renting from multiple vendors,
some wedding coordinators, such as
Bobbie Camp, of Keys Breeze Wedding
in Islamorada, may own most of the
supplies necessary for a small to
medium wedding. Keys Breeze staff
can even provide music, cake and
photography. Depending upon the
venue, the price for a complete small
wedding package can cost as little as
$3,000 in the middle/upper Keys. An
all-inclusive wedding planner such as
Keys Breeze will limit the number of
vendors you need to coordinate, and
absolutely save money over a do-it-
yourself event.
Many wedding planners are
members of the Association of
Bridal Consultants (ABC), or another
reputable professional association.
Professional memberships assure
that the planner you choose follows
professional standards, and that
they have expertise that comes only
from networking with vendors and
planners nationwide.
Jennifer Levering, Director of
Weddings at Weve Got the Keys, is
especially familiar with Key West
venues. Although most local planners
are willing and able to work with
brides throughout Monroe County,
keep in mind that Key West and Key
Largo are nearly 100 miles apart, and
a wedding planner will have the most
expertise in their own backyard.
Wedding planners generally
work for a set fee, plus an hourly
rate for additional duties. There
are planners willing to provide pre-
planning consultation for a fee, to
give prospective brides advice about
local vendors and venues. During
the course of a consultation, couples
often realize that contracting with an
expert wedding planner will actually
save money in the long run.
Planners can work with the bride
and groom, and their families, for
a year or more before the wedding,
coordinating plans between vendors
and venues, and providing advice
and ideas on things like event design,
when to send out invitations and
how to plan a schedule. For weddings
with a smaller budget and/or a short
planning timeframe, many wedding
planners offer Day of Coordination
services, as well.
There are a number of do-it-
yourself wedding apps available
on smart phones now, (check
out Brides Wedding Genius, or
iWedding), but a warm-blooded
wedding planner has knowledge,
creativity and a talent for diplomacy
that no computer can duplicate.
Hire a wedding planner.

rides- and grooms-to-

when the day they
will tie the knot finally arrives. The
realization that months and months
of planning and anticipation are
finally about to come to a head often
inspires some jitters in the days
leading up to the wedding. But the
following are a few ways couples
can calm those nerves in the hours
leading up to the moment they have
devoted so much time and effort to
planning since becoming engaged.
Get a good nights rest. Couples
should prioritize a good nights sleep
the night before they are set to walk
down the aisle. Make your last night
as an unmarried couple an early
night so you will look your best and
have plenty of energy on your big
day, which will no doubt start early
How to calm those last-minute jitters
SPECIAL TO THE CITIZEN
CHRISTIE TRANSIER/Special to The Citizen
50 WEDDINGS 2014
Avoid these 4 stress triggers:
1. Not having a game plan
2. Select your wedding party wisely
3 Dont go way over budget
4. Striving for perfection
and end late. A
good nights sleep
can go a long way
toward ensuring
youre in a good
mood as you handle
a full slate of responsibilities
on your wedding day.
Spend time with family
and friends. Chances are
your closest friends and
family members are playing
significant roles in your
wedding, and spending time
with them is a great way to
keep your nerves in check
while having a fun time
before, during and after
the ceremony.
Dont be afraid to
delegate responsibilities.
In spite of months of
planning, couples will still
have a to-do list come their
wedding days. If such a list
is overwhelming, brides-
and grooms-to-be should
not be afraid to delegate
some of the tasks
on their lists.
Bridesmaids and
groomsmen can
no doubt handle
any outstanding tasks
that dont require any input
from the bride or groom.
Relax as the ceremony
draws nearer. As the start
time for the ceremony
approaches, couples about
to tie the knot should
take time to sit down and
relax. Once their hair and
makeup is finished, brides-
to-be should sit down
and exhale or arrange
for the photographer
to snap some fun pre-
wedding photos with their
bridesmaids. Grooms-to-be
can do the same with their
groomsmen, sharing a few
last-minute jokes to ensure
everyone is relaxed and
ready to go before taking
their places.

Wedding March became
tradition around 1858, when
Queen Victoria selected the
music for her daughters wedding.
Pachelbels Canon is equally popular,
as is J.S. Bachs Air on the G-string.
Local trumpet/sax/flute player Marty
Stonely gets many requests for Clarkes
Trumpet Voluntary and Jesu, Joy of
Mans Desiring by J. S. Bach.
For brides seeking contemporary
music, guitarist Brian Roberts suggests
Somewhere Over The Rainbow,
performed on the ukulele (popularized
by Hawaiian icon Israel IZ
Kamakawiwoole) as a poignant choice
with tropical flair.
DJ Jay Floyd receives many requests
for selections by the Vitamin String

set current songs in a classical style,
add subtle humor to the celebration,
without sacrificing decorum. Check out
their version of Jason Mraz Im Yours,

CDs for indie or goth weddings.
For the reception, Wedding Planner
Nadene Grossman Orr said, Every year
there is a new set of songs still I like
songs with staying power, timeless.
She suggests that the bride and groom
look for a first dance that they will still
appreciate on their 50th anniversary.
Musician Marty Stonely adds,
Key West is all about destination
weddings. Clients bring their tastes
and preferences from all over the
map.
Among first dances, the
Motown hit How Sweet It
is (to Be Loved by You) has
been popular since Marvin
Gaye first recorded it in 1964. Elvis
I Cant Help Falling in Love With
You, remains well-loved too. If the
party mood is tropical, consider Bob
Marleys Three Little Birds, or Turn
Your Lights Down Low.
Key West Chris suggests Shes No

humorous song for the bride and groom.

For a father-daughter
dance, What a Wonderful

There is no reason that
the bride and groom need
to choose every song
for a four-hour wedding
reception, but it is prudent
to hand pick the most
important songs, including
the couples first dance,
the father-daughter dance,
and other family dances.
One bride left all of the
song selections to her DJ,
and after just one glass of
champagne she unwittingly
dragged her new husband

styles Latin, Reggae,
Motown, disco and toss in a

backgrounds, with wildly
divergent musical tastes,
and it is up to the bride and
groom to make sure that
there is a little something for
everyone. A conga line to
Buster Poindexters version
of Hot Hot Hot or Barry
Manilows Copacabana
might be clichd, but
gosh, it is fun for all ages.
Clarence Carters Strokin
and Tequila are risqu
enough to amuse the
kids, and good fun for the
grownups, too. YMCA
reliably gets a crowd
moving, and, of course, the
women always like a dose
of Aretha Franklins
R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
The Wobble has
recently joined the Cupid
Shuffle and the Cha Cha
Slide as most popular line
dances. If your audience
has a country sensibility, get
them two-stepping to Alan
Jacksons Dont Rock the
Jukebox or Rednex version
of Cotton Eyed Joe.
To stir excitement even
before the wedding, it is a
great idea to include a note
in each invitation, asking
guests to list a favorite dance
tune on their reply card.
If you truly cannot stand
the Macarena, or anything
by Madonna, your band
or DJ should be happy to
accommodate a Do Not
Play list, too.
The point of a wedding
reception is to celebrate. Jot
down your favorite songs,
and add that to a list of
tunes that are classic crowd
pleasers. Aspire to the simple
goal of having fun. Then slip
on some comfortable shoes,
and dance the night away.

WEDDINGS 2014 53
Explore unique cake flavor combinations
BY STEPHANIE PINO, Special to The Citizen
A
wedding cake is the
piece de resistance of the
wedding ceremony. Guests
anxiously await the unveiling of the cake
near the end of the festivities. Modern cakes
are showpieces grander in scale than in
years past. As bakers and confectioners hone
their skills with fondant, buttercream and
gum paste even further, the results are often
impressive, awe-inspiring cake designs.
While the look of a wedding cake is
certainly important, cakes should not only
look good, but taste good as well. Vanilla
cake with vanilla buttercream frosting
was once the gold standard. But todays
couples are being more adventurous with
their wedding cakes and winning rave
reviews from guests along the way.
The vast scope of wedding cake flavor
choices available to brides and grooms
is astonishing. Options may range from
the traditional to something adventurous
and daring. Keeping in mind that couples
will need to please the masses, finding
a compromise between plain vanilla
and a mocha-chile-coconut surprise
is essential. Otherwise, they risk an
unpopular flavor and a lot of wasted,
expensive cake.
Some couples shy away from more
adventurous cakes because they fear
something chocolately or not white in
color will not be well suited to a wedding
reception. Such couples should keep in
54 WEDDINGS 2014

g
mind that any flavor of cake can be hidden beneath
layers of pearly white fondant or royal icing. Therefore,
the sky is the limit with regard to flavor combinations.
Those who might want to veer from tradition can
consider these clever cake combinations.
Lemon cake with vanilla buttercream: Lemons are
tart, juicy and refreshing, helping to cleanse the palate
after a rich meal. Lemon cake, with its summery feel, is
tailor-made for summer weddings. The flavor is popular
enough to appeal to many, but just a little different to
add an unexpected zip of flavor.
Chocolate cake with chocolate ganache and mocha
filling: True chocoholics will be hard-pressed to resist such
a decadent flavor profile. Chocolate can be sweet and
satisfying and a welcome change from the vanilla cakes
commonly served. For traditionalists, the cake can be
covered with a white chocolate ganache. Or couples can
ask that the cake be adorned with white sugar roses for
an eye-appealing contrast. Chocolate cakes covered with
autumn hued flowers go over well at fall weddings.
Red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting: Red velvet
cake was once a regionally specific staple, but now has grown
steadily in popularity across the country. Red velvet has
quickly become the new classic, as its vibrant red coloring
offers a shock of something different, while the flavor is mild
for those who are not comfortable taking risks. The richness
and creaminess of cream cheese is irresistible.
White cake with chocolate mousse: Couples
who want a bit of chocolate but do not want to be
overwhelmed can select a white cake that is filled with
light and rich chocolate mousse. Its the perfect blend of
vanilla and chocolate for guests who enjoy both.
Variety tiers: Those who cannot settle on just one
flavor can have different flavors on each tier of their
cakes. This gives guest some flavorful variety and enables
them to pick their favorite flavor combination.
Brides- and grooms-to-be who have specific flavors
in mind can ask their bakers to include two cupcakes
with the wedding cake. Then the couple can enjoy their
own mini cakes while the rest of the guests enjoy a more
classic cake. In addition, an assortment of cupcakes
in lieu of one cake can give guests the opportunity to
sample several different flavors.
Cakes are a part of many special events, but few cakes
are fawned over as much as wedding cakes. Couples can
spice things up by choosing a nontraditional
flavor combination.

1. Kitchen Appliances and Gadgets
From toasters to blenders, kitchen appliances and gadgets
are commonplace on a bridal registry. Bread makers, food
processors, and electric mixers help new brides transform into
Betty Crocker.
2. Gourmet Coffeemakers
In this day and age, caffeinated couples crave the latest in
coffee making, such as the Keurig line, which produces cups
of coffee in less than one minute.
3. Designer Luggage
Newly married couples are often set off to honeymoon in style
with designer luggage that once graced their bridal registry.
4. Table Settings
Whether they are offered an array of patterns or furnished
with complementary color schemes, many bridal registries list
plates, dishes, bowls, cups, silverware and table linens.
5. Cookware
Saucepans, frying pans, skillets, and soup pots are common
items found on a bridal registry. Did you know that copper
selections cooks food faster, as well as requires less heat?
6. His and Hers Gifts
From designer watches to his and her towels, personalized
and monogrammed gifts for the bride and groom are a real
treat, especially when centered on a hobby shared by both you
and your sweetie.
7. Luxury Bedding
Newly married couples should sink into a bed that brings
comfort, as well as a bit of pampering. Consider adding high-
thread count sheets, Egyptian cotton, and super soft throw
pillows to your bridal registry.
8. Vacuums
Yes, many a bridal registry has included vacuums and other
heavy-duty cleaning supplies, such as a steam cleaner, wet-
vacs, and trendy robotic gadgets.
9. Electronics
When formulating your bridal registry, did you think to include
popular electronic items, such as computer printers, digital
cameras, camcorders, and even iPods?
10. Wine Refrigerator

wine and champagne chilled is a popular bridal registry desire.

1. Dont Skimp on the music! Most
brides surveyed after their wedding
said they wished they had spent
more on the entertainment/music.
2. Dont assume that the photographer
knows what you want! Spell it out
very clearly in writing so that he/she
know the exact photos you are look-
ing for. Many brides like a combo of
photojournalistic photos and posed
photos.
3. No matter what they sayif you
do not hire a professional videogra-
pherMAKE SURE you have a back
up battery and an extra tape.
4. For candlelight ceremonies talk
in great detail to the photographer
about how much light he needs and
if he has the proper equipment so as
not to disturb the ambience of your
ceremony
5. Make sure you have a wedding
emergency kit with you at all times. If
you did not hire a wedding coordina-
tor, appoint a responsible and trusted
person to carry this with them to the
church and the reception. An emer-
gency kit contains: Acetaminophen
or Ibuprofen, back-up stockings,
needle and thread, a bottle of water,
crackers, bottle of orange juice, wed-
ding schedule, copy of all vendor
contracts, phone numbers, etc.,
directions from hotel to ceremony
and reception sites. List of songs for

6. If you plan on a lengthy photo shoot
between the ceremony and the recep-

some type of music is provided in the
meantime.
7. Planning an outdoor wedding? Have
a colorful supply of umbrellas on

8. Practice wearing your wedding
shoes before the big day.
9. If youre planning on candles, be
sure to appoint someone to light
them.

11. Ask your bridesmaids to place
their bouquets around the reception
area as additional decoration. Theyll
be thankful not to hold them during
the celebration.

ents as a gesture of thanks. Present
it to them the morning of the wed-
ding.
13. Send a romantic telegram to your
fianc just before the ceremony.
14. Enjoy a light snack before leaving
for the ceremony. Many brides never
taste the food at their reception.
15. Be sure to get a good nights sleep
before the wedding. Youll be glad
you did!
16. Be sure to have your gown cleaned
after the festivities. Stains that may
not be visible now may yellow later.
17. Make sure a picnic basket is
prepared for you and your husband
before you leave the reception site.
Have someone place it in your get-
away car about 30 minutes before
