TUTORIAL 1

This tutorial is based on the following sections in PC Sen (2
nd
Edition): Appendix A (Sections
A1 A3), Chapter 5 (Sections 5.1 5.5).

1. Explain why distributed windings are preferred over concentrated windings in AC
machines.

2. Explain how a rotating magnetic field is produced in an AC machine.

3. Explain briefly, from first principles, how torque is developed in an induction motor, when
the stator is supplied with balanced three-phase currents.

4. If the rotor of an induction motor is rotated at synchronous speed, how much torque will
the motor develop? Please explain.

5. Relative to an observer on the stator of an induction machine, the rotating magnetic field
due to the stator currents rotates at synchronous speed ns, whilst the machine rotor
rotates at angular speed n. At what angular speeds are the following rotating at:

a) The rotating magnetic field due to stator currents, relative to an observer on the rotor.

b) The rotating magnetic field due to stator currents, relative to an observer rotating at
synchronous speed.

c) The rotating magnetic field due to currents induced in the rotor winding, relative to
the observer on the stator.

d) The rotating magnetic field due to currents induced in the rotor winding, relative to an
observer rotating at synchronous speed.

e) The rotating magnetic field due to currents induced in the rotor winding, relative to an
observer on the rotor.

f) The resultant rotating magnetic field due to stator and induced rotor currents,
Relative to an observer on the stator.

g) The resultant rotating magnetic field due to stator and induced rotor currents,
Relative to an observer on the rotor.

h) The resultant rotating magnetic field due to stator and induced rotor currents,
Relative to an observer rotating at synchronous speed.

6. For the machine described in PC Sen, Problem A.1, determine its winding factor kw.

7. For the machine described in PC Sen, Problem A.2, determine the rms value of the
Fundamental emf induced in the stator winding.
