STORY
Somaliasgovernment,securityforcesandtheAfricanUnioninSomalia
(AMISOM)metintheSomalicapitalMogadishuyesterday(October28)to
provideajointupdateonthesecuritysituationintheHornofAfricacountry.

PresidentHassanSheikhMohamud,theSeniorRepresentativeoftheChairman
oftheAfricanUnionCommissionforSomalia(SRCC),Ambassador
MohammedSidikou,alongwithseniormilitaryofficersfromtheSomaliNational
Army(SNA)andtheAfricanUnionMissioninSomalia(AMISOM)briefedthe
mediaontheprogressoftheongoingoffensiveOperationIndianOcean.

WithsupportfromAMISOMandtheEuropeanUnion,wevebeenabletogetthe
variousspecialisttechniciansthatourforcesneeded,saidGeneralDahirAdan
Elmi,SomaliasChiefofDefenceForces

Thehighlightofthedaywasamapbriefthatclearlyindicatedthecatastrophic
lossofterritorythatextremistrebelsalShabaabhadsufferedsinceJanuary
2014.

AlltheblueareasaretheonesinthehandsoftheFederalGovernmentof
Somalia,saidGeneralMohamedHassanQarfow,theCommanderof
SomaliasNationalArmy(SNA).

OfficialssaidthatanearlieroffensiveOperationEaglewhichbeganinMarch
thisyearresultedin10significanttownsbeingliberated.Theyalsosaidthat
OperationIndianOcean,whichbeganinSeptemberhasfocusedonSomalias
strategiccoastaltowns.Eighttowns,includingtheAlShabaabstrongholdsof
BaraweandAdale,havebeenliberatedsofar.Theysaidthetownswerechosen
todisruptalShabaabresupplyroutesandthenisolateeachpocketofresistance
fordetaileddestruction.TheyannouncedthatthetownofKodayhadbeen
recoveredonly48hoursbeforeandthatfurthertownscouldbeexpectedtofall
imminently.

WhatAMISOMandtheSomaliNationalArmyhavedone,issimplyensuringbut
underyourleadershipandaunitedSomalia,thateverybodyhashisownshareof
thecake,sotospeak,ofthegoodiesthatallareentitledto,offreedomthatall
areentitledto,beingtogetherwhichismoreimportantthananythingelse,said
AmbassadorMohammedSidikou,theSeniorRepresentativeoftheChairmanof
theAfricanUnionCommissionforSomalia(SRCC).

UnitedNationsSecurityCouncilresolution2124wasadoptedinNovemberlast
year,allowingadditionaltroopsandotherresourcestobedeployedinJanuary
thisyeartobolsterAMISOMwhichthenenabledthejointforcestolaunchfresh
operations.

NowwehavetheSomaliNationalArmy,theAMISOMforcescontrolmorethan
80percentoftheterritoryofSomalia,saidAMISOMsForceCommander,
LieutenantGeneralSilasNtigurirwa.

SomaliasPresidentHassanSheikhMohamud,whorecentlyvisitedBarawe,
toldofficialsandjournaliststhatviolentextremismwasaglobalproblem,andthat
hisgovernmentwaswellawarethatalthoughbattered,AlShabaabhadnotbeen
annihilatedandwoulddesperatelytrytoreassertitself.

ThegovernmentofSomaliahadpledgedanamnestyof45days.The45days
havelapsedandmorethan700youngmenhavetakenadvantage,renounced
AlShabaabandhandedthemselvesin.ThegovernmentofSomaliawelcomes
them.Wewillalsodevelopmorerehabilitationfacilitiesandgivethem
opportunities,opportunitiestostudyandgainskillssothattheycanreturnto
society.Therewillbenoretribution,insteadtheywillbegiveneducation,said
PresidentMohamud.

Mohamudalsosaidthathisadministrationisnowfocusedonprovidingfoodand
waterandrestockinghospitalsandclinicsthatwerestrippedbareasthe
militantsretreated.

Officialsconcludedbynotingthattheonlysignificanttownsstillunder
AlShabaabcontrolareJamaame,Jilib,BualeandSakowinMiddleJuba
Region,DiinsorinBayregionandBardereinGedoregionandafewother
smallertownslikeElDereinMiddleShabele.
