Ebola Virus Vaccine Market & Pipeline Insight Page 1

Ebola virus infection, which was previously called Ebola hemorrhagic fever, was discovered in
1976. The infection caused due to Ebola virus originates from four different strains of Ebola
virus. These viruses generally are known to affect non-human primates, and are transmitted
from wild animals to the humans and among the latter, it is known to spread through human-
to-human transmission. The natural hosts of Ebola virus are Fruit bats, which belong to the
Pteropodidae family.
Ebola virus is mostly found among primates in the African region, (mainly in the remote
villages of Central and West Africa, near tropical rainforests) and in the Philippines. Other
than Africa, this infection has been observed in regions like Republic of Congo, Gabon, Sudan,
Ivory Coast and Uganda.
In terms of treatment, till date, there is not standard treatment method for Ebola
hemorrhagic fever. Only supportive therapy is available. Also, there is no licensed vaccine for
Ebola virus infection which is of clinical use. The researchers have been trying to better
understand this virus and target its ecological reservoirs in order to get a deeper
understanding of the cause and nature of the outbreaks of this disease. There are currently
many experiments in the laboratories which are focusing on developing an appropriate
vaccine for the prevention of this disease, but no success has been met till now.
The pharma companies have a significant opportunity in the field of Ebola virus infections in
terms of developing drugs, vaccines and introducing measures to control and prevent the
spread of the disease. After the success of the clinical candidates, and the market approval of
these drugs or vaccines, it is most likely that there could a significant demand for these
products from the physicians and patients. Additionally, due to the nature of the disease,
these products would be priced at a premium, which would eventually yield high revenues for
the companies which would earn a significant return on investment.
