Case study

The ideal solution

7 weeks
On average every person in
the UK throws away their
own body weight in rubbish
every 7 weeks.*
Key facts
The problem
Inchcape Fleet Solutions is an independent vehicle leasing
and eet management company with 165 employees
managing over 53,000 vehicles from its busy Portsmouth
headquarters. The company has recycled its shredded
waste paper which accounts for half of its recyclable
material for some time, but wanted to do even more.
We always look for ways to reduce waste, explains Terry
Smith, Inchcapes Business Services Manager. And we
wanted someone to recycle our other materials such as
plastics, glass, cardboard and drinks cans.
The solution
Fortunately, Inchcape found a local recycling company that
offered a recycling collection service for small to medium
enterprises. They provide the ideal solution for us, says
Terry. We have weekly collections and they even gave us a
months free trial. We were delighted to sign up and start
recycling more of our waste.
The service has been a huge success, as Terry explains:
Before we started recycling we had two 1100 litre
wheeled bins emptied four times a week. We now only
need one bin emptying twice weekly.
Employees are really enthusiastic about the scheme and
we now recycle over 75% of our ofce waste, says Terry.
The reduction in our waste disposal costs pays for the
recycling service. It means that recycling at work is cost
neutral for the business.

Key facts
The future
According to Terry the benets of recycling at work are even
more far-reaching: We track our recycling progress with
detailed reports. Last year our paper recycling efforts saved the
equivalent of 67 trees. Were all really proud of that.
Terry is keen that other small businesses experience the benets:
I would denitely recommend recycling at work to other
organisations. Its easy to do and it has the feel good factor -
our employees and clients are very happy that we are doing our
bit to help the environment.
As part of an integrated strategy, Inchcape also look to reduce
their environmental footprint in other ways, such as installing
efcient lighting and heating systems throughout their ofces
and encouraging car sharing. As Terry concludes: Recycling at
work is an integral part of our overall environmental strategy.
