With the shorter days now upon us, you are likely to be returning from work in the dark. I have put
together some simple crime prevention advice for winter that I hope you all find helpful.
Dont make your home an easy target this winter.
Use timer switches on lights to make your home look occupied when youre
out.
Close all curtains when its dark.
Ask neighbours to remove parcels from the doorstep.
Dont leave Christmas presents under the tree in full view, keep them out of
sight to the big day.
Empty boxes left outside could advertise the goods that are inside your home.
Break up the boxes and dont put them out until the day of your recycling
collection.
If you are going away over the Christmas period, ask a friend or neighbour to
keep an eye on your home.
Dont give car thieves an easy ride..
With the frosty mornings, and the need to defrost your car, never leave your car
unattended with the engine running.
Remove your sat nav and its holder from your car, dont leave it in the glove
box as this is the first place a thief will look and make sure you wipe away
any suction markers on the screen from the holder.
On display, easy prey.
Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and never keep your PIN number with
your bank cards.
Be vigilant and aware of who is around you, especially when withdrawing cash
out of a cash machine.
Dont leave Christmas shopping on display in your car, keep it out of sight in
the boot of your car and make sure your car is secure.
Enjoy the festive period season responsibly.
If you are out partying, clubbing or pubbing over the festive period, remember
thieves operate in crowded areas, so keep your mobile phone and other
valuables safe.
If you go out with friends, make sure you come home together, never leave
anyone behind.
Think! Dont drink and drive.
If using a taxi, make sure they are a genuine taxi and if you book a mini cab,
make sure that it is the one booked, by asking who the cab is booked for,
before you get in.
Drink responsibly and never accept a drink from a stranger or leave your drink
unattended.
If you are walking home from a night out, do so in groups and stay in busy well
lit areas.
Should you require any further crime prevention advice, please contact the Bowthorpe Safer
Neighbourhood team on 101. PC Tony Lester

How good are you at identifying the autumn fruits of the hedgerow?
No points at all for blackberries: everyone knows those. What about small round red/
crimson fruits? Or torpedo shaped red/orange fruits? Or rather larger round blue/black
fruits with a sheen or blush to them? (Haws from the hawthorn, hips from the rose,
sloes from the blackthorn). Well done if you got all of them.
But what about something that looks very exotic: a coral pink fruit divided into four
swelling segments that open in November revealing four bright orange seeds? Im not sure that pink
and orange go very well together but this somehow looks right. It is not so common as the others but it
belongs in our hedgerows and in our woods.
I saw it first many years ago on the lane leading down to Salhouse Broad. I can remember my
astonishment, prompting me to look it up when I got home. Then again cycling somewhere in the Yare
valley there was a vision rather like the burning bush. When I stopped and looked, the flames resolved
themselves into pink and orange fruits. Then later I saw dense thickets of them along the river Inn
above Innsbruck in Austria. After that I searched them out, finding them along Marriotts Way and then,
finally, a couple of hundred yards from my house in the hedgerow along the lane from Clover Hill down
to the main centre, just at the end
of the bus lane. I checked today
and that one is covered in pink
fruit: it is a good year for them.
There are some in our local
woods. The one I looked at in the
wood today is small and doesnt
have any berries as yet. But the
twigs are green (not so very
unusual) and square rather than
round (quite unusual) so Im sure I
have identified it correctly. Some
of you (master class botanists?)
are thinking, spindle.
I read that indeed it used to be
used for making spindles as it is a
very hard wood but Im not sure if
I believe that. I also read that the
berries are poisonous: maybe
thats why it has such a bright and
distinctive colour scheme,
warning, dont eat me! In spring
you can be forgiven for
overlooking it: it has small
greenish white flowers. But if you
are out and about in November it
jumps right out at you, especially
if you know what you are seeing.

Last month I went with my family to the Theatre Royal to see the musical
`Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
The real story is of Joseph, the eleventh of twelve sons born to Jacob,
who was favoured by Jacob with the gift of an ornamental robe. Josephs
life was not a peaceful one. It was complicated by the folly of youth,
broken dreams and the resentful and spiteful actions of his brothers. His
jealous brothers sold him into slavery and he was transported to Egypt.
While in Egypt, he was falsely accused of trying to seduce the wife of his
Egyptian master and thrown into prison. Despite his `bad luck Joseph
remained without bitterness or anger. He knew God was in control,
although circumstances seemed to say otherwise.
He eventually rose to the office of Prime Minister of Egypt, having
correctly interpreted Pharaohs dream about seven fat cows and seven
thin cows. There would be seven years of plenty and seven years of
famine. From prison to palace, once again Joseph was dressed in fine
robes. His interpretation of Pharaohs dream meant that during seven
years of plenty, Egypt stockpiled food. When seven years of famine hit
the region, Egypt had enough. It was then that Josephs brothers
journeyed to Egypt in search of food. Although they didnt recognise their
brother, he recognised them, and so his dream about their sheaves of
corn bowing down to his was fulfilled. Joseph was blessed and Jacobs
family survived. What was remarkable about Joseph was his response to
his brothers when he revealed his true identity: You intended to harm
me, but God intended it for good.
How does this story help us today? The story reveals that no matter how
bad things get, God is able to bring some good out of it.

Spaghetti Carbonara
Ingredients

6 lean rashers of bacon, all visible fat removed
4 eggs
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
4 tbsp fat free natural fromage frais
2 level tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
small handful of fresh chives
400g dried spaghetti

Method
1. Cook the spaghetti according to the packet instructions. Drain well and return to
the saucepan.
2. Meanwhile, heat a large non-stick frying pan over a high heat. Add the bacon and
dry-fry for 2-3
minutes, then turn off the heat.
3. Lightly beat the eggs, season to taste and stir in the fromage frais, 1 tablespoon
of Parmesan and
most of the chives.
4. Add the bacon to the drained spaghetti and mix well over a low heat, then remove
from the heat and
stir in the egg mixture. Toss thoroughly so that the eggs thicken in the residual heat,
making a sauce
that coats the pasta.
5. Scatter over the remaining Parmesan and chives and serve hot

Leyham Court

Hello Everyone
Well, its been a very busy month
here at Leyham Court with our
makeover running just a little later
than expected, but now that carpet
fitting is well underway, the end looks
to be well in sight. So no time to get
bored here, speaking of which:

Not So Boring Life!
NotSoBoringLife.com claim to have
the worlds largest list of hobbies. Its
an online site dedicated to helping you find that new hobby, with over 300
different hobbies listed on the website. Some of the hobbies have guides
with what to expect, where to start, and what kind of budget (priced in
dollars though)
Under Collecting for example, the site lists over thirty different items to
collect from buttons to tractors. There are also more than 30 Arts & Crafts
hobbies listed from scrapbooking to macram, or if you fancy an extreme
sport there are 36 listed from sky diving to shark fishing. Perhaps you have
a preference for an outdoor hobby keeping your feet firmly on the ground!
then how about Bonsai Trees, Boomerang Throwing, or become a Backyard
Astronomer.
Its a good place to start and once something takes your fancy, you can
Google your new found hobby for more specific information. If you cant find
it here it probably doesnt exist! - Its well worth a look. Go to http://
www.notsoboringlife.com/ or simply
Google not so boring life.
Congratulations to residents Freda &
Gerald, who celebrated the renewal
of their marriage vows on Fredas
90

birthday. The service was
conducted by Minister Mark Elvin.

Our thanks to all those that participated

Hello again Everyone. We hope you have not been shivering too much in
the recent cold spell. Hopefully it will improve before the real winter starts
and we will have an Indian Summer. However today it is obvious that
the season of mists and cobwebs has really arrived, although some of
the latter are truly beautiful works of art.
The Luncheon Clubs held at Ashwell Court on Tuesdays and Thursdays are
continuing to prosper with some delicious meals provided by our cook,
Christine. The excellent meals are terrific value for money, consisting of two
substantial courses and coffee for 5, which is no doubt why the number of
attendees is increasing.
Otherwise we are still exercising twice a week, and many of us
have noticed a marked improvement in our flexibility! The
exercises are gentle and designed for those who are less active
as well as those who are more active, but they do have an
effect.
In addition we have our monthly book club meetings and we are
all reading avidly to get the most recent book read in time to
discuss it at our next meeting and with preparations for the Open Day held
at Ashwell Court on 20
th
October, we have been kept very busy.
Our entertainment evenings recently featuring Pat James and Patsy Rose
are always very popular and lively affairs with enormous buffets prepared by
our entertainment team. These are very enjoyable evenings and the
numbers attending are increasing every time, not only for the excellent
entertainment and dancing but also for the buffets. We look forward to an
evening with Dick High, Hoy and Fish and Chips.
Well thats all for this time. Best wishes from all at Ashwell Court.

Our summer trips have ended
for this year. We now look
forward to our xmas
Dinner trip which we are
pleased is all booked for
us. Now come the long
dark nights, wet and windy days,
We had some sad news given
to us on Monday morning,
George and Faye will continue to
arrange our outings for next
year, but are stepping down from
the monthly evenings. Sad for
us, but they came here for the
same reason we all did. I think
Bradecroft will change and not
for the better. There has been
many changes since I first came
here, many of the folk have
passed away, new faces arrive
but they dont seem to want to
join in our activities.
Now, Id better see what madam
has to say, I am in her bad
books.
Bye all till next time.

I will try to be a
bit happy next time.

Afront o Norwich City Hall
Ole comrades from the forces all
An mourners, while in silence, lay
Ther tributes on Remembrance Day.

In memory o those thass lost,
They gather on the autumn frost
An dudder in the mornin cold
To honour both the brave an bold.

Fer them who fought in trench or

An sacrificed ther harvests yield,
Tha generation cheerfully
To slaughter marched so we wuz
free.

Agin the call wur made to arms,
An thousands joined from town an

To rid the world o tyranny,
On land, in air an out at sea.

While on the home front tew each

All hell would shruck an then ignite
The waaks, an housen old an new,
To pan the city into stew.

On island or on desert sand
They seft some gast or chife o land,
Fer swoddies all dew durst to see
A future where thars decency.

Ours strome along St Peters Street,
As flags are lowered to a beat
O single drum, then clock tower toll
Eleven fer yar absent soul.

Though here, fer them, these words

In stone to all who fell in war:
Their name liveth for evermore.
