Dear Traveller

Finally things have turned around with the NMC and the tests are ready to go! Earlier this month the NMC
introduced a new registration process for all nurses trained outside the European Union. The following
rules will apply to anyone that has NOT received the 1
st
pack from the NMC.

If you have received pack 1

The following rules detailed below can, if you choose, apply to you. Its your choice: continue with the old
process (supervised practice with 20 days of university training) or change to the new route (theory and
clinical test). Please be aware that the choice of route comes at the end of the process.

If you have been rejected

Provided you are eligible ( 3 years university based nursing programme, one years post registration
experience and a minimum of 500 clinical hours taken during your nursing course) you will receive a letter
from the NMC inviting you to sit the theory and clinical tests. You do not need to reapply. You MAY need to
re-submit some documents eg references but this is, as yet, unclear. For NMC purposes you do not need
to re take the IELTS , for immigration purposes you may (if your test is older than 2 years and you need a
Tier 2 visa ) however for immigration purposes the pass grade is substantially lower.

If you have a decision letter

If your decision letter asks you to undertake a period of supervised practice you may choose either route ,
supervised practice period or theory and clinical tests. The NMC will be sending you a letter in due course
explaining how to switch IF YOU SO CHOOSE to the new testing route. The option is yours : supervised
practice period or tests.

If you have applied or will apply after 1
st
October 2014

If you have applied on line ( new in October ) in order to be eligible to practice as a Registered Nurse here
in the UK you WILL be going down the new testing route. The NMC has introduced two tests one theory
and one clinical

New Application Process:

Step 1 Online application
Step 2 Theory test at Pearson Vue test centres
Step 3 Documents submitted to NMC
Step 4 Clinical test- here in the UK (Objective Structured Clinical Examination- OSCE)

Step 1 Online application:

After passing the English exam (IELTS at level 7) apply online for the theory test https://ireg.nmc-
uk.org/
After completing the online form ( no documents are uploaded ) an e-mail will be sent to you by
the NMC telling you that your details have been passed onto Pearson Vue
Pearson Vue sends you an email with a link to their system providing you with login details and a
password
Logon to the Pearson Vue website and schedule a date for the theory test

Step 2 Theory Test:

The test is a multiple choice, online test
The test is reactive. You will answer a minimum of 120 questions and a maximum of four hours

The test will cover, professional values, communication and interpersonal skills, nursing practice
and decision making, leadership management and team working, and general medical and surgical

The NMC does not suggest a particular book to study. Any recognised / university endorsed
nursing textbook will suffice
A pass rate of 60% allows you to progress to the next stage.
If you do not achieve 60% you may retake the test after 28 days. If you fail a second time you must
wait 6 months before resitting
Results are available within 48 hours

Documents include Passport, Birth Certificate, Registration Certificate, Nursing Diploma/ Degree,
GP/MD Health Declaration, References, Verification from your Board of Nursing , Transcript of
Training and Police Check. No documents need to be notarised, as originals are presented later at
the clinical test centre

At the OSCE centre you will present your original documents ( save transcripts and nursing
verifications)
NMC registration should be within ten days.
