GREAT FELLOWSHIP
The English work here In Cascais has been a very good time offellowship for all of us. The members
of this group are mainly people working with American corporations or families with the armed
services and NATO. We meet every Sunday morning for services and are blessed with a message
and sharing of the Lord's Supper. The members come from many different backgrounds, but they
alii love the Lord and want to serve Him in any way they possibly can. The service is very similar
to that of home except the music. I usually play guitar or Dick plays the accordian to accompany
the hymns. Many of the men have come forward and said they will help lead in the services, so we
feel that the church is growing. Please pray for this work here. It means so much to us to have
fellow Americans to talk with and share with in Christian fellowship.

Happy New Year! It has certainly been a
very interesting year and I have so much to
be very thankful for. Christmas was very
special for me this year because I received
the best present anyone could ask for. My
mother and brother arrived safely in Lisbon
on Christmas morning. It was such a joy to
see them and spend time with them. We
made a short trip into Madrid, Spain. Mom
and Doug also visited one of the Portuguese
Bible studies and the English services. They
did get to do some sight-seeing before their
visit was cut short. TWA cancelled their
flights because of a strike here in Lisbon,
so theyflew home Jan. 2nd.
Christmas was also special for me in
another way. I was able to tell the Christmas
story to the Portuguese Bible Study that
meets on Sunday nights. They all listened
as I told them that Christmas was really the
birthday of Jesus Christ. It was rewarding
to me to see the faces of those that listened.
They know that Jesus loves them and that's
whyHegave Himself for us.
I would like to thank all of you for your
prayers this past year as well as your support.
It's through you that Iam here. Thank you!

University Study
The University of Lisbon is much dif
ferent from a University in the States. There
are manystudentsthat are turned awayeven
if they have the grades to beaccepted. Many
want to learn more, but are not allowed
to continue.
I am not a direct student of the Uni
versity, but myclasses are through the Univ.
of Lisbon. Portuguese is taught on three
different levels. Dixie Thomas and I are in
the beginner first level, which is basic Portu
guese. Debbie Brunsman is in the inter
mediate class which deals some with culture
as well as language. Dick and Sarah Robison
are in the advanced level that offers culture,
syntax and structure ofthe language.
I am learning a lot and just hope I learn
faster. I leave every morning at 7 a.m. and
return home at 1 p.m. Only two hours are
spent in class and the rest is transportation.
Please continue to pray for meas Ilearn.
PRAYING TOGETHER
Prayer is so very important. Our work
here is founded on prayer and undergirded
by prayer. Not only our prayers as a group,
but also your prayers in our behalf.
Our group here in Portugal meets once
a week topray together. This is a time when
we share with each other and then take it
before God as a group. Many times we meet
in our homes, but a few times we have gone
up on the hill behind Robison's apartment.
The view from there is breath-taking as we
look out over the city of Cascais and see the
many apartment buildings and realize how
many people don't know the Lord. The
fields are truly white unto harvest.
Colossians 4:2.3 says, "Devote your
selves to prayer, being watchful and thank
ful. And pray for us too, that God may
open a door for our message, sothat we may
proclaim the mystery of Christ..." (NIV)
PRAY-LUDES
1. Prayer of thanks for the safe arrival and
return of my Mother and brother.
2. Thanksgiving that we all now have our
permanent resident cards.
3. Pray for the Braz family as they will be
moving across the river.
4. Pray for the government officials here
inPortugal inthis coming year.
5. Pray for our transportation needs as
we are faced with many public transit
strikes.
6. Pray for my father as he plans his trip
to Africa and here in March.
7. Continue to pray for Portugal Christian
Mission and our board.
John 14:13 "And I will do whatever you
ask in my name, so that the Son may bring
glory to the Father." (NIV)

Professing God's Word through teaching English.
Standing by the oceanand watching the water,
God's love surrounds me, Iam His daughter.
I stand amazed often as God's creation I see.
Mountains and valleys, man, womanand sea.
Thereare so manypeople who don't know His love.
They're caught upin worldly things, not those above.
We must tell the world before He returns,
TheGospel of Christ, wewant them to learn.
Great is the mission He has called us to do.
But He gives thestrength to carryit through.
Thereare so many countries of which Portugal isone,
They need to know the love of God, through His only Son.
The Harvest isplentiful and the workers are few.
Now ask yourself the question, "What can Ido?"

Greetings from sunny Portugal. I hear
that you have all had quite a winter. The
weather has been fairly good here except for
the rains. The weather certainly hasn't slowed
us down much. I received a clipping in the
mail that expresses my feelings exactly.
Snoopy says that he feels like someone push
ed the fast forward button. I feel the same
way, but I do feel that a lot has been accom
plished inJanuary and February.
By the time you read this, Iwill be study
ing in my second semester of language school.
It is going to be a little harder because I
will also have a culture class this semester.
I have also been kept busy with a dif
ferent type of ministry. Since January I have
been coaching two girls' basketball teams
from the American International School of
Lisbon (AISL). It has really been fun and a
great time of fellowship. The girls are all
fifteen and under, and a joy to work with.
I have had the opportunity to meet several
of the teachers at AISL as well as several of
the girls' parents. I would appreciate your
prayers as I continue to work with the girls,
that I might really be able to live Galatians
2:20.
The Bible Studies are going well and
continue to grow. The Robisons have finished
their study at the University and will be
working full time with the Bible Studies and
other works.
I'm looking forward to Dad's visit at the
end of this month. It will be a great time.
Thanks for all your letters and prayers in
mybehalf. Until next time!
Cheri Lynn
WHAT CAN I DO?
Many people have asked me what they
can do for the Lord since they can't go to
the mission field. The poem on the front of
the Professor tells how I feel. I had asked
myself the same question and nowI am here
in Portugal. The financial support of church
es is how I am able to be here. The prayer
support is also very important. I could not
make it without those prayers. Our forward
ing agents are invaluable. Sharing our work
in your Sunday School class or with the kids
is a way to help. There is so much that can
be done at home for the Lord that helps
those who have gone to be able to complete
their task.
"Always give yourselves fully to the
work of the Lord, because you know that
your labor inthe Lord isnot in vain."
(I Corinthians 15:58 NIV)
STRIKES and MORE STRIKES
Strikes and more strikes are just a part
of everyday life in Portugal. Since the be
ginning of 1982, Portugal has been plagued
with several strikes. The biggest one came
the twelfth of February. The Communist
party was hoping for a total strike that would
include all transportation, water, and elec
tricity. The Portuguese government took
action and the strike did not go through
with as much force. The trains did not run
and many of the buses in Lisbon did not
run, but there was plenty of water and elec
tricity.

hey kids! how have you enjoyed all the snow? 1 have really
missed the snow, it has been pretty nice here, as you can see by the
way the little boy in the picture is dressed, this little boy is someone
we see very often in portugol. he is singing and begging for money,
he sings on the trains and in the streets, my mother and brother
sow him while they were here.

The Monument of Discoveries! What a beautiful site. This is one way that the Portuguese remember
their history. It was from this very port that many of thediscoverers sailed for the unknown. Vasco
de Gama was one that sailed from this very port. Below the monument in the sidewalk is a map of
the world. As I looked at the size of the monument and the map below I thought of the task of
evangelizing the world. There are still so many that don't know the love of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ. I suddenly felt very small and inadequate. However, looking to 1Corinthians 12 we
find that we are all of one body and that together we can accomplish great things. We may all
have a different ministry, but it is toaccomplish a sole purpose the sharing of the love of God and
His plan of salvation and eternity. The task is large and we are small, but we have the Victorious
Christ on our side and He will give us the strength tocomplete and accomplish the task.

What a beautiful day! I hope you
are enjoying spring weather too. It is
hard to believe that it is May already.
Think I am still on fast forward!
My Dad's visit was a real blessing.
He arrived one day early and almost
caught me unprepared, but I managed
to get things in order after staying up
most of the night. Our time together
was very relaxing and enjoyable. He
even got a chance to rest in between
stops at his favorite coffee shop! I
know that he was glad to get back
home to the rest of the family, and I
amglad hearrived safety.
The rest of my vacation was spent
resting and working on a songbook
for the Portuguese Church. The I8th
of April was the first Portuguese church
service and we were very pleased with
the attendance. These services are
separate from the Bible Studies. They
are conducted totally in Portuguese
and held at the same location as the
English services. Iamhelping with the
music by playing my guitar, and Dick
and Tim lead the service. We hope to
have a Sunday School as well. The
Lord is blessing the work.
I have been doing quite a bit of
substitute teaching at the American
school, and really enjoy it. By the
time you read this I will have finished
with the basketball season, and I hope
to report a winning season to you next
time.
I am looking forward to the sum
mer and all the various activities that
it will bring. Thank you for your con
tinued support, both financially and
prayerfully. I couldn't do it without
you.

THE OPEN MARKET
This is a typical scene on Wed
nesday and Saturday mornings. It
isn't Eisner's or Kroger's, but I do get
some really nice vegetables and fruit.
There is everything from oranges to
live chickens and fish. I have really
adapted the phrase "learn by trial and
error" to my cooking! I learn some
thing new eachday!
LANGUAGE SCHOOL
The second semester is well under way,
and I will have taken my final examination
by the time you receive this. Our summer
vacation begins on May 28th.
I do feel like I have learned a lot. I do
quite well with my shopping and with small
conversations with people that I encounter
every day. I have enjoyed studying under
Maria Jose for both semesters. She is very
patient and willing to help. We have enjoyed
many other discussions besides school work.
The language laboratory is quite ade
quate at the university. I often feel like a
pilot when I put on the head phones to listen
to the prerecorded tapes.
Even though the culture class has been
beneficial, I have found that the best way to
learn the real culture is to ask the people
themselves.

Greetings from hot and sunny Portugal.
It seems like only yesterday that I greeted
you in the last Professor. I have finished
school for the summer and I am enjoying my
free time. As I told you before, my father's
visit was a great blessing to me. As in the
picture, there were a lot of smiles during
his visit. Now I am looking forward to my
sister and a very good friend arriving. They
are to be here the first of July and stay for a
couple of weeks. Cindy and Wendell are
to arrive around six-thirty in the morning,
and in order to meet them. I will have to
catch a five-thirty train and then a taxi to the
airport. I think it is worth the sacrifice
though! It has been great to have my
family and friends visit this year.
The summer has been very interesting.
We continue to have our different Bible
Studies with the Portuguese, and the Portu
guese church service on Sunday afternoons.
We plan to have a couple of VBS sessions
for the children this month. They will not
be exactly like home, but similar. Ours
will be shorter in length by a few days. The
English work also continues and we have
had some great times of fellowship together.
Recently we went to see the movie Jesus
and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I have started something new since I
last wrote. I have what we call a youth fel
lowship once a week. The idea is to give the
youth something to do during the summer
asa group. We may go to a movie together,
to the beach or on a camp-out, but we do it
together. Our first meeting was June 7th.
Please keep this in your prayers and also
prayfor me as I lead them.
There have been some trying times in
the past months, but 1continue to learn. The
Lord has supplied the necessary strength
and together we goon. I have to read Isaiah
40 and 4 I several times a week! Thank you
so much for your encouragement through
letters and through your prayers. You are
all veryspecial!
BASKETBALL TEAMS
Am I a proud coach? You bet! The
girls did very well in their final tournament.
I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you
a little more about the season and also let
you seethe teams.
Both teams captured their division titles
with winning seasons. The May Sports Festi
val was the big tournament that we had
looked forward to and worked for all season.
There were teams from our own division
plus the Algarve (south Portugal) and
Oporto (north).
A least three of the games were won by
one point in the last few seconds and one
game was lost that way. Needless to say
what that does for a coach's heart! The
senior girls took first placein their age group
and the junior girls took third. 1was very
proud of both teams and very happy that I
could have a part in their winning. I really
enjoyed coaching and getting to know the
girls. It was a great experience. 1hada lot of
help from Cathy Johnson, who is one of the
P.E. teachers of AISL. We all had a great
time!

EVORA: A CITY OF HISTORY
Evora is the capital of the Alentejo region of Portugal, which lies
southeast of Lisbon. The history of the entire country can be
seen in the famous city. Different architectural styles still remain
from centuries past. The ruins of the Temple of Diana are one
such site. Of second century Roman construction, the Temple of
Diana was adapted from the religion of Ephesus. Another point of
interest is the Church of Sao Francisco where the Chapel of the
Bones can be seen. During the sixteenth century there were
three monks that wanted to display the certainty and finality of
death. In order to do so, they constructed this chapel in which
the walls and ceiling are lined with human skulls and bones. AH
of the bones were taken from the three hundred cemeteries in
and around Evora. The remains of the three monks lie at the
front of the chapel in a large urn. These, and many other points
of interest in Evora, indicate how it is rightfully called the City
of History.

The summer haspassed and many things
have happened. I had a great visit with
Wendell Sutton and my sister Cindy during
July. We got to see many new things to
gether and I really enjoyed their company.
By the time you read this, the VBS ses
sions will be history and I will be very busy
with many different activities. I would like
to share my plans for the fall and coming
year with you. First of all, I am coaching
at the American School full-time this year. I
am taking care of the two girls' soccer
teams from September to the end of Novem
ber, and the three girls' basketball divisions
from January to the end of April. I accepted
this position after much thought and prayer.
I volunteered my help last year and really
enjoyed the time with the students. I feel
that this is an excellent opportunity to wit
ness to the kids, and also to the teachers
and parents. I will be paid a minimal sum,
but plan to put this toward my Portuguese
lessons. I have decided to have a private
tutor this year. The time that I spent going
to the University last year can be used more
effectively and I feel that 1will learn faster.
I will be involved in the two church
services and two Portuguese Bible Studies.
I will also begin teaching English to four
Portuguese ladies and I am really excited
about that. The youth fellowship will also
be in full swing this fall. I would appreciate
your prayers in my behalf in all the various
activities for this fall.
You have noticed that I have the month
of December off from the American School.
1will be in the States to spend the holidays
with my family and take care of some per
sonal business. My air-fare has been pur
chased with personal funds. Dick Robison,
team leader for PCM, has given permission
for mytrip as well as approved my coaching
and teaching. The Lord has opened many
doors and I just pray that I will be a worthy
servant.
Thank you for your support and love.

CORK TREES?
Did you know that cork came from
trees? Have you ever seen one? Cindy and
Wendell and I had the chance to see lots
of them on our way to Evora. It was really
fascinating. Cindy and I are standing behind
a tree that was recently cut. They are a
bright red color when first cut and then turn
darker as the years go by. The cork is only
cut from the trees every seven to eight
years. The cork is cut in large pieces and
has to be done very carefully. There is an
art to this cutting. Cork is one of the major
exports of Portugal and is very important
to the country.

FADOAND FOLKLORE
Theword fade in Portuguese literally means fate, but in Portugal it is used to identify the unique art
of singing fados. The fado is a song that expresses fate, sadness and resignation. It is said that the
fado comes from around the late I 700's and that it reflects the mixture of Moorish, African, and
indigenous influences. The person that sings the fado is called the fadista and their ages range from
very young to very old. Most of the time the fadista will wear black and is usually accompanied by
guitars and mandolins. The picture that you see here is of the folk lore singers and dancers. They
also perform at fado houses and I like them the best. Their music is very different, but enjoyable.
They dance the folk dances of Portugal and areaccompanied bydrum, triangle andaccordian. Their
music isa little more lively than the fadista, but both are veryenjoyable.

Happy Thanksgiving and a very Merry
Christmas! 1 realize that by the time you
receive this Thanksgiving will be past history,
but Iwanted you to know that I was thinking
of each of you and wishing you the best.
By the time you receive this I will prob
ably be on my way home or already there.
I am very excited about my trip and hope
that it will be a great time of fellowship with
myfamily and friends.
The time has really gone by fast since
September. I oftenfelt like Iwas on a merry-
go-round and met myself coming and going.
The private English lessons have gone very
well and 1 think that the ladies are making
good progress. It is soexciting to teach some
one that is so willing and anxious to learn.
It is a real joyto see the smiles on their faces
when they have mastered the alphabet or
the days of the week. Please continue to
pray for me as I teach, and also for my stu
dents.
The church work is going well and we
now have registered with the government
and have claimed the name of Church of
Christ (Christian). No other organization
can use this name. The services are going
well and the Portuguese service is being led
by Raul Silva and Arnaldo Braz several Sun
days a month. Dick Robison still does the
preaching at times, but the men are really
anxious to help. Wethank the Lord for that.
May you all enjoy a prosperous time of
Thanksgiving and a blessed time of celebra
tion at Christmas.

GIRLS SOCCER
What a bunch of girls I have for the
team. I have really enjoyed working with
them and we have seen some good results.
We won our game with the British school
two to one, and were very happy. It isn't
often that Americans beat British in the num
ber one sport of soccer. Hal Tim Thomas
has been helping with the teamand that has
been a great asset. The girls are very ener
getic and willing to work and we have had a
lot of fun. I was very sadto seeJacky Peter
son leave on the 20th of October, as she was
a very good player. I hope she keeps up with
soccer and basketball in the States. I am
hoping to have a winning season, but as long
as thegirls do their best. Iwill bevery pleased!

AN ANSWER TO PRAYER
I have been praying for quite some time
that I could find a vehicle that I could drive
back and forth to school and save some time.
Well, at the first of September, a member of
the English congregation asked ifIwould like
to take his car and keep it running for him.
I was really happy. I now have a Toyota
that gets me anywhere I want to go. It is so
handy and really nice to drive. We even
took it to the Algarve on a recent trip. I
can't say that Iam really comfortable driving
in Portugal, but it is much easier than the
bus and trainand three more hours. By being
able to drive to and from school I have saved
about two hours traveling time and can use
that more effectively. I am very grateful to
Ray Hartley for providing my answer to
prayer. I should also say a special thanks to
Wanda Hartley, as she is in the States with
their son, and it is her car. Thanks to Ray
and Wanda!
