DearReaders,
WelcometotheMayissueofEnergyMagazine
withthethemeofHealingTouchandChildren.
Thisisasubjectverydearandneartomyheartandisaday-
to-daypracticeinmyhome.Mymother,JanetMentgen,found-
erofHealingTouch,broughttheconceptsofHealingTouchto
ourhomeintheearly1980sasshestudiedenergyworkand
developedherenergypractice.HavingHealingTouchavail-
abletomyselfandmysiblingsasteenagers,wesoonlearned
thatMomcouldhelpwithalltypesofthingsfromheadaches,
tobrokenbones,PMS,emotionalissuesofteens(including
heartaches),aswellasstressmanagement.Weweresovery
blessedtohavethistypeofnon-invasiveandeffectivemodal-
ityavailabletous.Becauseofmyhistoryandexperience,Iam
afirmbelieverthateveryhomeshouldhaveatrainedHealing
Touchpractitioner,evenifthelearnersplanistomainlybe
supportivetoonesfamily.
Ihavethreechildrenages,2,6and9andtheyallreceive
anduseHealingTouch.Infact,theywereallbornwithaHeal-
ingTouchpractitionerpresentduringtheirbirths.Inourhome,
westrivetocreateanenvironmentthatissupportiveforour
childrentobothreceiveandgiveenergywork,tobeopento
theconceptofenergyfields,andtoexplorethepossibilitiesof
thingsunseenorunknown.
Irememberonce,whenNikki(oursixyearold)was4years
old,shementionedtoherbabysitterthatshecouldseeorange
aroundthebabysittersjaw.Nikkiproceededtoworkonthearea
byapplyingHTtoherjawareawithwhatlookedtomelikeultra
soundfollowedbylocalclearingoftheaffectedfield.Thesitter
latertoldmethatshehadatoothachewhereNikkiwaswork-
ing!Asparents,ChrisandIoftenfindourselvesencouraging
Raymond,NikkiandLouistoseeorexperienceenergyfieldsby
askingthemWhatdoyousee?or,isthereanycoloraround
thatperson?
Ihaveseenformyselfthatchildreningeneralareveryintuitive
inregardstoenergywork.Theysenseit,interpretit,andcan
influenceitiftheenvironmentthattheyareinissupportiveof
thesenotions.Mychildrenhavenohang-upsorbeliefissues
aroundenergyworkitisjustpartoftheireverydaylives.I
havealsoseenthatchildrenareveryempathetictowardothers
andwanttohelp.Ilovethattheyhavetheknowledgeandtools
tousetheirhandstobesupportiveofothersandcandosome-
thingwiththeirempathy.Mychildrenveryoftenwillaidanother
childoradultthathasfallenorwhoisupsetbyinitiatinganHT
treatmentintheirownspecialway.Anotherwonderfulbenefitof
childrenlearningaboutenergyhealingatayoungageisthat
theyareempoweredtouseHealingTouchtoenhancetheirown
well-being.
Withthisinmind,itwasveryeasytobesupportiveofHTPs
2009projectcreatingaHealingTouchforChildrenclassto
teachbasicenergyconcepts,includingintuition,whichwould
introducetechniquesforchildrenfrom6to12yearsold.In
2008,KarenDaughtry(HTCP)andDarleneNelsonapproached
mewithabooktheywroteforchildrenonReikiandaskedifwe
coulddosomethingsimilarforabookforHealingTouch.We
saidYES!Theirresultingbook,My Helpful Healing Touch: A
guide for Empowering Children andanaccompanyingon-line
instructionalclass(availableforLevel4studentsofHTPand
up)thatwasproducedistheresultofourmutualvision.is
the26pagebook,fullofsimpleblackandwhiteillustrations
thatcanbecoloredisawonderfulgiftforanychild.Ibelieveit
providesoneofthebest,easytounderstandexplanationsof
healingenergyworkthatalsohasappealforadults.Seepage

thatmoveshertoaskforpermissionbeforeshe
useswhatshethinksmighthelpothers.The
techniquesmakesensetoherandshessoat
homewithusingHealingTouchthatshehardly
everthinkstwiceaboutwhenandwheretooffer
herselfasahelper.Roxyhashelpedpeoplewith
bruises,cuts,woundsofvarioustypes-often
ontheplaygroundduringrecess.Roxyisseven-
yearsold.Thisisherstory.
RoxysMotherhasbeeninvolvedinhealingandnaturalthera-
piesherentireadultlife.Itisinherblood.Whenshebecame
pregnant,itwasagiventhatIwoulddoHTwithherduringthe
delivery.WeliveacrossthestateofMichiganfromeachother.
SevenyearsagoIspentthedeliverywithMomandwatched
hereaseasshewentwiththeflowofthecontractionsandthe
challengetobringanotherpreciousBeingintotheworld.
Roxyshowedup!Perfectandwondrouslypresent.Fromthat
experienceonward,sheandIhavehadaclosenessthattran-
scendsfriendship--wearebondedinaspecialway.Icannot
explainit--Isimplycelebrateit!

Roxy.IarrivedwithMy Helpful Healing Touchbooks,crayons,

Ihavebeenteachingadultsenergymedicinefor16years.Six
andseven-yearoldsarequiteadifferentstudentdemographic!
Fivechildrencametotaketheclass--andinthosefivekids
wasmoreexcitementandenthusiasmthanistypicalofan
adultclassroomof20!(Whathappenstousfromchildhoodto
adulthoodthatdampensourjoyorlocksawayourenthusiasm
forlife?)
IthasbeenalmostsixmonthssinceRoxytookherfirstHeal-
ingTouchforChildrenclass.Icalledhertheotherdaytoask
howthingsaregoingandwhatcouldshesharewithotherswho
mightwanttobringHTintotheirlives.Hereiswhatshetoldme:
Ive used it at recess a lot. The kids run around and play and
when they get hurt I use it on their knees; or theyll hurt their
arm; or if it theres a rock and they trip over it; or if they fall
down -- no matter what happens, I offer.
I ask them, What happened? Alex will say what happened.
Do you want me to help you? Alex says, Yes. I tell him how
to do Healing Touch. You move your hands over the hurt and
think of happy thoughts. Then I think of happy thoughts. First
I like to warm up my hands to feel more warm -- then I do
Healing Touch.
I go to PYP-International Laureate School in Bloomfield Hills,
Michigan. We were studying caring and water and were going
to report on HT and how it helps our bodies feel better be-
cause were made up of water.
When I had a loose tooth, I used Healing Touch to help the
pain of the loose tooth. I just use it whenever I can.
I use it for headaches, too. (There is a long pause in our con-
versation -- then Roxy says, thoughtfully.)
I use it a lot.

Inthenineties,Iworkedinaregionalneonatal
intensivecareunitasaregisterednurse,and
sawtheworstoftheworstcasescenarios,from
congenitalconditionstobirthcomplications.Most
ofourtinypatientsstayedwithusformonths.
OneofmymostmemorablepatientswassweetbelovedBran-
don.Bornpremature,henotonlyhadlungdiseasethatkepthim
onaventilatorformonths,butalso,manybonedeformitiesthat
addedtohisdistress.HewasborninJulyinatinyruralhospital.
Duringthedelivery,someoneaccidentallybrokehislegstrying
tostraightenthem,notrealizingthathislegsweremalformed.
Asaresult,hisfirstweekswerewrackedwithpain.Itwashard
tomakehimcomfortable.Hewasalwaysirritable,hardtocalm,
andsalivatedalot,creatingtheneedtofrequentlyre-tapethe
tubethatattachedhimtohisbreathingmachine.Myheartwent
outtohim.Ihadseverescoliosisasapreteen,andIknewhis
pain.Itreallytouchedme.Hewasnotaneasypatientinthe
beginning.However,atthetime,IwasaHealingTouchstudent,
eagertotrymyhealingskillsonsomeonewhowouldbenefit.
HealingTouchwasfairlynewtwentyyearsago-nottoomany
peopleknewabout.Somenurseswereevengettingfiredfor
healinginthehospital.Strangebuttrue.Mostofthenurses
withwhomIworkedthoughtIwasfromthemoon,buttheyat
leastletmedowhatIdo.Iusedtotellthemthattheworstthing
thatcouldhappenwasnothing.
BrandonreceivedHealingTouchtreatmentseveryday,several
timesadaywhenItookcareofhim.OndayswhenIhadother
babies,Iwouldsitandtalktohim.Ashisconditionimproved,
hedevelopedthesweetestpersonality,alwayssmilingand
laughinginresponsetoanyattention.Infact,hebecamethe
unitmascot,andeveryonestartedcarryinghimaround,buying
himclothes,toys,littlebooks.Ihaveapictureofhimwithmy
monkeypuppet,andtheyareboththesamesizeinthepicture,
thatishowlittlehewas.
Weeksturnedintomonths,andheactuallywasdoingreally
wellduringtheperiodshewasofftheventilator.Moretimeto
spendinsomeonesarms!Bynowhehadgraduatedtousinga
tracheostomybecausehisconditionhadwarrantedit.Hewas
stable,buthestillhadmomentswherehewouldholdhisbreath
andturnbluewhenhewasupset.Itissoamazingthatno
matterhowsmallbabiesare,theirpersonalitiesareintrinsically
upandrunning.Hehadanamazinglystrongspirit,whichwas
obviousbyhowmuchhehadalreadyenduredandsurvived.
Lifeisprettyhardwithoutyourmom,justasanormalbaby,but
tobeinpain,andawayfromhome?Nowonderheturnedblue!
Fortunately,HealingTouchseemedtohelphim.
Weoftenwonderedwhyhisfamilynevercame.Weknewthat
momwasateen,couldnotdrive,andlivedaboutfivehours
away.Alongdriveforsure--butformonthswithoutvisits?We
heardrumorsabouthowthemomsparentswerenotsupport-
iveenoughtodrivehertothebigcity,butwedidntknowifthis
wastrue.Wesimplyneverreallyknewmuchabouthisfamily.
Untiltheholidayscame.Ihadbeenshoppingforpresentswhen
IsawasmallSantasuit.IboughtitforBrandon.OnChristmas
day,Idressedhimandparadedhimaroundtheunit.Heloved
thewholeritual;weallgotalotoflaughsfromhim.Andus!
Intheafternoon,Brandonsmomandgrandparentsarrived.I
couldseehowstunnedtheywerewhentheysawthisSanta
babyallgrownupinhisbiggercrib.Theywereabitformalat
first,afterall,hewasastrangertothem.Itwasquiteapparent
thoughhowcaptivatedtheywerebyhispersonality.Hemelted
theirhesitanceandbroughtthemintohisheart.Bytheendof
theshift,theywereallrelaxed,relievedandinlove.
IrememberhowmanytimesIheldhim,assuringhimthatif
theyonlyknewhowsweethewas,theywouldberemorseful

aboutnotvisiting.Itoldhimthatitisprettyroughtobealone,
butthatGodwasinhisheart,andthattheangelswerewith
him,andthathehadabigenoughhearttoforgivehisfamily
fornotbeingaround.Maybesomedaytheywillrealizewhata
blessingyouare.Youhavebeenablessingforme,forsure!
SoIwatchedthisfamilytableau,ofyetanotherunconditional
infantopeninghisheart,knowing,remembering.Hisfamilyar-
rangedtostayintownwithfriendsofafriend.Theylearnedhow
totakecareofBrandonstracheostomyandhishomeventilator.
Theyallwenthomeweekslater,withbigsmilesandgratitude
fromhismomandgrandparents.
Fastforwardthreeyears:IhadntseenBrandonforyears,and
herehewas,nowinthePediatricIntensiveCareUnit(PICU),
recoveringfromhip/legsurgery.Thedoctorstookprecautionsto
keephimovernightbecauseofhishistoryoflungdisease.He
wasdoingwell.Iwassohappytoseehim,hewassuchabig
boynow!Itfeltlikeherecognizedmyvoice,andItalkedtohim
forquiteawhile.Hewasawakeandalert,andinnoapparent
distress,readytocharmanyonewhowalkedpasthisbedside.
Nexttohim,Iwascaringforanotherbaby.Idonotremember
whatshehad,butIdoremembershewasveryuncomfortable
andcrying.IstartedtogiveheraHealingTouchtreatment.AsI
passedmyhandsoverherenergy,Ispokesoftwordsofen-
couragement,tellingherthatshewouldhealquickly,andthat
herlifewasinGodshands.Inthemiddleofthisinteraction,
Brandonsgrandfatherhadcomeintotheroom.Ashesilently
watchedme,Iacknowledgedhimwithanodbutfeltabitself
conscious.Iactuallythoughtaboutstopping,butdecidedthat
thebabyneededwhatIwasdoing,soIcontinued.Eventually
shefellasleep.
IwentovertogreethimandupdatehimonBrandonsnight.He
lookedatme,andasked,Whatwereyoudoingoverthere,to
thatbaby?
HealingTouch-youfamiliarwithit?Ithelpstocalmandrelax,
givesthemtheirbestshotatrecovering.
Henoddedthoughtfully.HelookedatBrandon,thenbackatme,
andasked,Didyoudothattomyboy?
FromDayOne.Ilovedyourlittleguy.Stilldo.
Hiseyeswelledwithtears.Wethankyousomuch.
Myeyestearedaswell.Ihadflashesofscenesofcaringfor
Brandonasababy,andmerealizingthatDivineProvidencepro-
videdhimwithguardianangels,alongwiththeothernurses,to
nurtureandlove--andreceivebackthishugeheartthatlivedin
abrokenbody.Abodythatwasgrowingandhealing--theheart
andsoulwithinsoaccepting-sounconditional-soenduring.
WealllearnedfromhimaboutthepowerofLoveandhowsome
miraclesmaytaketime,buttheyaremiraclesallthesame.

chologyandHealth.Shehaswrittenmanyarticlesonhealing,

We are very fortunate to have Dr. William Bengston, PhD, (au-
thor of numerous publications and texts, and one of the keynote
speakers at our Annual Worldwide conference in August), offer
us a reprint of this Edge Science Magazine, no.2, January/
March 2010 article describing the start to his career in energy
healing, his early research and what this means to those of us
who do healing work. As a novice researcher myself, I appreci-
ate the pioneering work that Dr. Bengston and those like him
are doing to open doors to understanding the mystery of the
work, its mechanisms, how it can/should be researched. I am
particularly thrilled by the support of some key Healing Touch
Program principlesnamely intention before techniqueand

verylongtimeago,soonafterIgraduated
withaB.A.insociologyfromNiagaraUni-
versity,Imetamanwhoclaimedhehad
onlyrecentlydiscoveredhisownpsychicabili-
ties.Atthetime,in1971,BennettMayrickwas
ahousecleaner.Hehadheldavarietyofjobs
beforeImethim,includingfloorinstaller,profes-
sionalsinger,etc.Basically,hewasajack-of-all
trades.SinceIdontnaturallydefaulttobelief,I
askedhimifIcouldtesthisclaim.Henotonly
agreedbutalsoactuallywelcomedtheopportu-
nityasheproclaimedhimselfaskeptic.Andsoa
partnershipwasborn.
Ibeganintheusualway,bygivinghimobjectsthatbelonged
tovariouspeopleandhadhimdescribetheircharacter,sur-
roundings,andeventsintheirlives.Iadmittohavingbeen
impressedbyhisreadings,evenasIwonderediftheremight
beanelementofself-delusioninallofit.AndsoIdraggedhim
aroundtopeoplewhoclaimedtobeexpertsinsuchmatters.
WewenttotheAmericanSocietyforPsychicalResearchin
Manhattan,tothedreamlabatMaimonidesHospitalinBrook-
lyn,andsuch.Ifoundtheseexperiencestobequitefrustrating,

graduatetraining,begantodesigndoubleblindteststhatwere
farmorerigorousthananythingtheexpertshadpreparedfor
us.Inshort,Bennettpassedthesetestswithflyingcolors,andI
wonderedwhattodonext.
Thatproblemdidntlastlong,asonedaywhilewesatinakitch-
entalkingaboutthisandthat,Ihadaflairupofchroniclower
backpainthathadmademegiveupaswimmingscholarship.
Offthecuff,Iaskedhimtoputhishandsonmybackandtake
awaythepain.HethoughtIwascrazybuttriedanyway.About
tenminutesafterheputhishandsonme,thepainwentaway.
Anddecadeslater,itstillhasntreturned.Ifthiswashysterical
suppressionofsymptoms,Illtakeit!
Allofthiswasbeforethenewageboom,whenalternative
healingpracticesbecamewidespreadevenifnotacceptedby
themedicalcommunity.IwatchedBennettputhishandson
personafterpersonandsawmuchthatImyselfwouldnever
believehadInotwitnessedit.Someailmentsrespondedpoorly
ornotatall.Warts,forinstance.Therewasnoeffectatallon
warts,andtothisdayIconsiderthattobeaclueevenasI
continuetobeflummoxedbywhatitmeans.Ontheotherhand,
cancerrespondedalmostimmediately,andthemoreaggressive
thecancerthefasteritseemedtorespond.Theonlyfailures
withcancerwerewiththosewhohadhadradiationorchemo-
therapy.Isuspectthisisanotherclue,whichmightmeanthat
healingdoesnotmixwellwiththerapiesthatkill.
Afterwatchingmanydozensofhealings,Ibegantogetfrustrat-
ed.Sure,thecureswereamazing,butthecomplexitiesinvolved
inclinicalcasesmadethemtoofuzzyformysensibilities.Did
acureresultfromthehands-ontreatment,theextravitaminC
thatthepatienttook,theirpersonalitytype,orsomethingelse?I
neededtoknow.
AndsowithafriendnamedDavidKrinsley,wedecidedtotake
thehealingphenomenonintothelab.AtthetimeDavidwas

specializingincriminology,thesociologyofreligion,andstatisti-
calmodeling.Davidwasinapositiontocallinsomefavorsso
hesolicitedtheheadofthebiologydepartmenttodeviseatest
thatwouldbeairtight.Oneofthechairsdepartmentmembers
hadbeendoingmicestudiesonaparticularformofmammary
adenocarcinomathatis100percentfatalwithin27daysof
injection.Themodelitselfwassowellunderstoodthatstatistical
studiesoflifespanwereroutinelydone,evenasnomousehad
everlivedpast27days.Ifwecouldevengetourmicetolive
closertothe27daymark,thatwouldbestrongevidenceofa
healingeffect.Ifamouseweretolivetoday28,well,thenwed
owntheworldrecord.
OuroriginalintentwastohaveBennettdothetreatments,butcir-
cumstancehadhimbackoutatthelastminute.Wewerethenleft
withcancer-infectedmiceandnohealer.Ratherthancancelthe
experiment,Davidconvincedmetoactassubstitutehealer.By
thattimeIhadspentagreatdealoftimewatching,testing,and
alsoassistingBennettinsomehealingcases.Andso,seeingno
alternative,Ireluctantly(andwithoutmuchconfidence)agreed.
A Skeptic as Healer
IusedhealingtechniquesthatBennettandIdeveloped
throughintrospection,trialanderror,andsimpleintuition.The
techniquesarecompletelybelief-freeandinvolveaprocess
ofextremelyfastvisualizationofaseriesofpersonalimages
doneinconjunctionwiththelaying-onofhands,inwhichthe
persontries,withaslittleeffortaspossible,tofeelanenergy
flowingoutfromthepalmsofhisorherhands.Theimages
eachpersonusesaregeneratedbyapersonallist,prepared
priortotheexperiment,of20outcomeswantedinhisorher
life,specificgoalsthatinvolvetheirownhealth,idealjobs,
materialaspirations,orotherpeople.Eachitemonthelistis
translatedintoanimagethatrepresentstheachievementof
thatparticulargoal.Thesepersonalimagesarethenmemo-
rizedandtheprospectivehealerpracticescyclingthrough
theminakindofmentalfilmstriploop.Thistechnique,rather
thanslowingdownbrainactivitythroughsomesortofmedi-
tativetechnique,actuallyspeedsupbrainfunctioningand
activitythroughtherapidvisualization.Atthesametimethe
handsontechniqueisdoneinaverydetachedmanneron
theassumptionthatfocusorbeliefwouldonlygetintheway.
Wecanactuallycarryonnormalconversationsandevenread
whilerunningthementalfilmstriploopsdoingthehands-on
techniques.
ForanhouradayIplacedmyhandsaroundthecageofsix
mice,wonderinghowintheworldIhadcometothis.HereI
was,askepticalresearchersuddenlysaddledwiththetaskof
treatingacancerthatisalwaysfatal.
SinceneitherDavidnorIhadanyprecedentinwhatwewere
doing,wenaivelysuspectedthatifthetreatmentwastohave
anysuccesstheneitherthemicewouldntdeveloptumorsor
thetumorswouldbeslowtogrow.Toourinitialconsternation,
neitherscenariooccurred.Withinafewdays,palpabletumors
developedonthemice,andIwasdiscouragedtosaytheleast.
Myinitialreactionwastocanceltheexperiment,putthemice
outoftheirsuffering,andcallitaday.Davidurgedotherwise,
especiallysincehehadgonetoagreatdealoftroubletosetup
theexperiment.AndsoIcontinuedthedailytreatmentsevenas
thetumorsgrewlarger.
AnyremaininghopeIhaddisappearedasthetumorsdevel-
opedblackenedareasonthem.Isawthisasthebeginningof
theend.Then,theblackenedareasulceratedandthetumors
splitopen.AgainIurgedthatwedotheethicalthingandend
theexperiment.Butthebiologychairnoticedthatthemicestill
hadsmoothcoatsandtheireyesremainedclear,andhewon-
deredwhytheywereactingasthoughperfectlyhealthy.
Then,inthefinalstages,themicetumorssimplyimplodedwith-
outanydischargeorinfectionofanysort;itwasafulllifespan
cure.Wewerestunned.Herewasaskepticalhealerandapre-
sumablynon-believinggroupofmicethathadgonethrougha
novelpatternofremissiontofullcureinamousemodelwithout
precedentofacure.
Lets Try That Again
Whattodonext?Obviouslyreplication.Eventhenitoccurredto
methatifthishealingphenomenonweretohaveanypractical
use,itneededtobeindependentofanyindividual.Plus,Iwas
prettyburnedoutfromtheemotionalrollercoasteroftheexperi-
ment.AndsoIinsistedthatDavid,thebiologychair,andtwo
non-believingstudentvolunteerssubmittobeingtrainedinthe
healingtechniques.Theonlyrequirementforinclusionintheex-
perimentwasthatthevolunteerhealersnotbelievethathealing
waspossible.Iactuallywentthroughseveralstudentsin
Breakthrough
myscreeningprocesstofindthestrongestlevelsofskepticism.
ClearlyIamnotintofaithhealing.
Infact,Imquitesurethatpositiveattitudeisntnecessarytodo
healing.Certainlybeliefisnteither.Speculatively,Ithinkthereis
apossibilitythatbeliefcanhinderhealingeffects,asbelievers
haveatendencytoinsertthemselvesintotheprocessbecause
theyhaveastakeintheoutcome(thesamereasonhealers
cantgenerallyhealthemselves).Healingiseffectivetothe
extentthattheegoisremoved.Ialsothinkthatritual(allritual,
really)destroysthethingthatitistryingtoreproduce.Inhealing,
ritualblockstheflowofhealing.Peoplegetverymadatme
whenIsaythis.Andsoinspeculativehindsight,Iunintentionally
mayhaveloadedthedeckinmyexperimentsbyworkingonly
withnon-believingcleanslates.
ThefourskepticalvolunteersthenreplicatedwhatIdid,and
wegotessentiallythesameresults.Allofthemicewerecured.
IthenmovedtheoperationtoSt.JosephsCollegewhereIwas
working,andwiththechairofthebiologydepartmenttheredid
experimentsthreeandfourwithotherskepticalvolunteers.In
thoseexperimentswealsotriedinjectingthemicewithtwice
thedosagenecessarytoproduceafatalcancer,triedmultiple
injections,andeventriedre-injectingthemaftertheexperiment
wasover.Butthemiceremainedimmunetofutureinjections
throughouttheirtwo-yearlifespan.
Wehavenowdonetenexperimentsonmiceatfivedifferentin-
stitutions,includingtwomedicalschools.Eightofthoseexperi-
mentsinvolvedthesamemammaryadenocarcinoma,andtwo
ofthemusedmethylcholanthrene-inducedsarcomas,whichare
notquiteasaggressive.Thoughtheseexperimentsachieved
healingacrosstheboard,theintricaciesoftheresultsarecom-
plexand,frankly,quitepuzzling.
Control Group Cures
Amongthemoreinterestingcomplicationsisthatundercertain
conditions,ouruntreatedcontrolgroupmicealsowentinto
remission.Ifthecontrolmicewerehousedinadifferentbuilding
thantheexperimentalmice,theyalwaysdiedonschedule.But
ifanyonewhoknewthehealingtechniquescameintoaroom
wherethecontrolmicewerehoused,theinfectedmicewho
werestillalivewentthroughtheprocessofremissionofblack-
enedareatoulcerationtotumorimplosiontofulllifespancure.
Atfirstthiswasextremelyannoying,asconventionalscientific
analysistakessuccesstomeanthattherewasagreatereffect
intreatedversesuntreatedgroups.Butiftheuntreatedcontrol
micealsogotcured,thentherewerenodifferencesforusto
report!Atfirstwesimplyreliedonthefactthatthemicewewere
workingwithalwaysdiedwheninjectedwithcancers,andsowe
alreadyknewwhatshouldhavehappenedwithourmice.Allof
themshouldhavedied.Butsincemicefrombothgroupswere
gettingcured,weknewwehadanotherclue.Itwasjustavery
difficultcluetointerpret.
IworkedonthisproblemforalongtimeuntilIrealizedthat
perhapsoneofthebasicassumptionsofexperimentalmethods
mightjustbeincomplete:thatseparategroupsareindepen-
dent.Ifthatassumptionofindependencebetweengroupscan
beviolated,thenperhapsIcouldaccountforthecontrolmice
thatwentintoremission.Perhapsallthemiceweresomehow
resonantlybondedwitheachother.Ourcolleaguesinphysics
arecertainlyusedtoentanglement,orwhatEinsteinfamously
calledspookyactionatadistance,butonlyonamicroscopic
level.AsfarasIknow,entanglementhasonlybeenshown
toabout100orsoatoms,certainlyfewerthanthenumberof
atomsinamouse.Yetweweregettingsimilareffectsincom-
pletebiologicalorganisms.Iwonderhowmanyotherlabsmight
haveexperiencedresonantbondingbetweentheirexperimental
andcontrolgroups,andmistakenlyconcludedthattheirexperi-
mentswerenotsuccessfulanddismissedtheirfindings?(This
iscalledatypeIIerrorthinkingthatnothingsignificanthap-
penedwheninfactitdid.)
Placebo Effects
AfewyearsbackIwasgivingatalkonthispossibilityatthe
2003ParismeetingoftheSocietyforScientificExploration
whenagroupfromalabinFreiburg,Germany,jumpedup
excitedlyandsaidthatImayhavesolvedtheplaceboproblem.
Iexpressedgratitudetothemforsayingthat,butIalsosaidthat
Ididntknowwhattheproblemwas.Likemanypeople,Ias-
sumedthattheplacebophenomenonwassimplythepowerof
suggestion,andthatdoctors,forexample,mightprescribean
inertpillthatcouldproducerealeffectsinapatientbecauseof
thatsuggestion.
Butaftertheconference,Ibegantolookintoplacebosabit
more,andwhatIfoundastonishedme.Theideathataplacebo
couldproducerealphysiologicaleffectswasunthinkablein
medicine50yearsago,butbynowmedicinerecognizesthat
placebosdowork,evenasthemechanismbywhichtheywork

andthecircumstancesunderwhichtheyworkremainamystery.
Yet,infact,itturnsoutthatplaceboeffectsincreaseovertime
tothepointwhereupto80percentoftheeffectsofdrugscan
bemirroredinplacebos.Thestrengthofthiseffecthasmadeit
difficultfordrugcompaniestoprovethattheirnewdrugswork,
asthegoldstandardofdouble-blind,placebo-controlledtrials
oftenendupmimickingtheeffectsoftherealdruginthecontrol
groupsthatonlygetplacebo.
Ibegantospeculatethatperhapsthiswashappeningtomy
mice.Whiletheywerenottechnicallygettingaplacebo,the
factthattheuntreatedmicekeptgettingcuredwasobviously
suggestive.Perhapsthesameprocesswasatwork.Perhaps
experimentalandcontrolgroupsarentasindependentaswe
oncethought,andjustaspeopletakinganinertpillrespond
asifgettinganactivesubstance,mycontrolgroupmicewere
respondingasifgettinganactualhealing.Coulditallbecon-
nected?Ifso,wehavetodosomeseriousre-thinkingofthe
assumptionsofclassicalexperimentaldesign.Perhapsatreat-
mentgiventoonegroupisalsoatreatmentgiventoallgroups?
Ivedesignedasequentialseriesofexperimentstoteaseout
whatpercentageoftheplaceboeffectisduetosuggestionand
whatpercentageisduetoresonantbonding,butIveyettoget
fundingoralabtocarryoutthework.
Theplacebo/resonantbondingproblemhasalsogivenme
pauseaboutwhetherhealingcanindeedbetaught.Ionce
thoughtthatsinceItaughtnon-believersmyhealingtechniques
andtheythenwentontocuremicethatotherwisewouldhave
surelydiedthatIhaddemonstratedthatmytechniqueswere
learnedandeffective.NowImnotsosure.Thinkaboutit:ifwe
haveanexperimentwherefivevolunteersaretryingtoputtheir
cageofmiceintoremission,evenifonlyonepersonisableto
doitthenperhapsallthemicewillbecuredanywayandeach
volunteerwillassumethatheorsheistheonewhoproduced
thecure.Thisisadauntingproblem.InoneexperimentIwas
treatingnumerouscagesofmicefordifferentlengthsoftimetry-
ingtofigureoutwhatistheminimumdosenecessarytoproduce
ahealing,andinoneofthecagesIneversawthemicebutonly
heldwaterthatwasfedtothem.Attheendoftheexperimentall
ofthemicewerecured.ShouldIconcludethattreatedwatercan
curecancerousmice,orwasitperhapsduetoresonantbonding
ofallofthemicesothatatreatmentgiventooneisatreatment
giventoall?Imstillnotsureoftheanswer.
Where Should We Go From Here?
Allofthisworkisintheearlyandpreliminarystages,butatthis
pointtherearesomeconclusionsthatcanbemadewithrelative
certainty,andsomeconclusionsthatareabitmoretricky.The
largestcategory,ofcourse,istheenormouslistofthingswe
dontknow.Thereiscertainlyplentyofresearchthatneedsto
bedone.
Themostunambiguousconclusionisthatcancercanbe
curedinexperimentalanimals.Evenadoubtersuchasmyself
hastothrowintheskepticaltowelaftertenexperiments.At
thispointwehaveonlytestedtwotypesofcancers,anditre-
mainstobeseenwhetherdifferentcancersresponddifferently
tohealingtechniques.
Allofthecuredmicelivedtheirnormallifespanoftwoyears.Af-
tertheinitialcure,subsequentre-injectionssimplyhadnoeffect
onthemice.Thisstronglysuggeststhatanimmuneresponse
issomehowbeingstimulatedintheanimals.Ifthatisthecase,
perhapsthestimulatedimmuneresponsecansomehowbe
transferredtoananimalthathasnotreceivedthehealingtreat-
ments.Infact,afteroneexperimentwasoverandIwasnolon-
gerinvolvedintheday-to-daybusinessoftheanimallabs,some
cellsweretakenwithoutmyknowledgefromthemicegoing
intoremissionandtransplantedtofullyinfectedmicejusttosee
whatwouldhappen;thetransplantedcellsseemtohaveinturn
curedthefullyinfectedmice.Thissuggestswemighthavethe
potentialforeitheraliteralormetaphoricalvaccinethatcould
reproducethehealingwithoutthehealer.Isthereanimmunolo-
gistwhowouldbewillingtotakeonthiswork?
Whatarethecorrelatesofhealing,inthehealer,thehealee,
andthesurroundingenvironment?Wehaveundertakenother
experimentstofindanswerstosuchquestions.
MargaretMogaandIhavedonethreemiceexperimentson
mammarycanceratherlabatIndianaUniversityMedical
School,andwhilegoingthroughtheusualroutineofhands-on
healing,alsostrategicallyplacedgeomagneticprobestotest
whethertheremightbesomeinterestingenvironmentalcorre-
latestothehealing.AndsoweexaminedDCmagneticfieldac-
tivityduringhands-onhealinganddistanthealingofmicewith
experimentallyinducedtumors.And,infact,duringthehealing
sessionsweobserveddistinctmagneticfieldoscillationsadja-
centtothemicecagesbeginningas20-30Hzoscillations,

slowingto8-9Hz,andthentolessthan1Hz,atwhichpoint
theoscillationsreversedandincreasedinfrequency,withan
overallsymmetricalappearanceresemblingachirpwave.The
wavesrangedfrom1-8milligausspeak-to-peakinstrengthand
60-120secondsinduration.Wespeculatethatthisevidence
maysuggestthatbioenergyhealingmaybedetectablewithDC
gaussmeters.
Aboutthreeyearsago,independentresearcherLukeHendricks
contactedmeaboutmyresearchwiththemice.Lukeisinterest-
edinbothbrainresearchandthepracticalapplicationsofheal-
ing.HeapproachedJayGunkelmanofQ-ProWorldwide,alead-
ingauthorityonEEGs,aboutconductingexperimentsonbrain
correlatesofmyhealingtechniques.WemetatoneofJayslabs
inPhoenixtolookatinterpersonalcouplingorconnectivitybe-
tweenhealerandhealeepairsusingadvancedsignalprocess-
ingapproachesandinstantaneousEEGphasecoupling.
Ourresultsshowedharmonicfrequencycouplingacrossthe
spectra,followedbyEEGentrainmenteffectsbetweenindividu-
als,andthenbyinstantaneousEEGphaselocking.Inother
words,thehealerandhealeedevelopedsynchronizedpattern
intheirEEGs.Theseresultssuggestthepresenceofacon-
nectionbetweenthehealerandhealeethroughapatternof
harmonicsconsistentwithSchumannResonances.Ifthese
dataholdinsubsequenttests,wemayhaveisolatedatleast
oneconnectivitymechanismsunderlyinghealing.
Butthequestionsgoonandon.Whathappenswhenheal-
ingoccurs?Dodifferenthealingtechniquesproducedifferent
results?Canhealingbestored?Areplaceboeffectsinstances
ofresonantbonding?Atthispoint,frankly,werenotsureyetof
theproperquestionstoask.
Andmainstreamscienceandmedicinehasnotexactlybeen
supportive.Myhistoryofresearchhasgenerallyfollowed
obtainedatotherlabs,andtheresearcherstheretakeonaoh
yeah,wellyoucouldntgetthoseresultshereapproach.When
themicegetcuredinthefirstexperimentatanylab,itisusu-
allytakenasagauntletbylabpersonnelthattheycanthwart
futurepositiveresults.Then,whenthesecondexperimentalso
producesfulllifespancures,itisoftenfollowedbyheadshaking
andproclamationstotheeffectthatthisisthemostamazing
thingtheyhaveeverseen.ButwhenIsuggestfurtherresearch,
thereisalwayssomereasonthattheworkcannotcontinueat
thatinstitution.WhenIsuggestthatitismygoaltoreproduce
theremissionswithoutthehealingtechniquesbyusingeither
thebloodofcuredanimalsorsomecorrelatetothehealing,my
suggestionisusuallymetwithintenseskepticismthatsucha
thingmightbepossible.Iwill,nonetheless,persevere.
Healing Humans
Theeighthundredpoundgorillainthemiddleoftheroomisthe
questionofwhetheranyofthisworksonpeople.Itisunambigu-
ouslythecasethatincreasingnumbersofpeoplearoundthe
countryareseekingoutalternativeandcomplementarymedi-
cine,whichatthispointintimemustbeclassifiedasagrowth
industry.Thereareanynumberofschoolsofhealing,workshops
onhealing,andpractitionersofthevariousalternative-healing
arts.Butdotheywork?Surelythepractitionerswillswearby
whateveritisthattheydo.Butmynon-systematicexperienceis
thatveryfewpracticesarerootedinrigorousdata.Thatisnotto
saythattheydontwork;itisonlytosaythattherearetoomany
anecdotesouttherenotmatchedwithempiricaltesting.
AsInotedatthebeginning,myexperimentalworkgrewout
ofclinicalobservationsandmyfrustrationsatnotbeingable
toisolatewhatworksandwhythroughclinicalobservation.
Certainlypeoplehavebeentaughtmytechniquesandapplied
themtopeoplewithsomeinterestinganecdotalresults.Buttoa
researcheranecdotesaresimplynotenough.
Atwhatpointwilltherebeenoughevidencetodoacontrolled
studyonpeople?Idontthinkthequestionhasaclearanswer.
Whilemypassionisinthelab,Iwouldcertainlybeopento
someclinicaltrials.Itsdifficulttodetermineifthemethods
weveusedarereallycomplementarytothecurrentcropof
conventionaltreatments.Complementaryornot,thedifficulties
ofcarryingoutsuccessfulclinicaltrialsaregreatlycompounded.
Idontyetknowhowtosolvethisproblem.Idoknowthatitisa
problemworthpursuing.

Ioftenworkasanintuitiveandenergyhealerforchildren,

Afewweeksago,amothercalledbecausehersonhadjust
beendiagnosedwithafast-actingcancer.Yetanotherfather
wrotebecausehiseighteen-yearolddaughterhadbeenhitby
adrunkdriverandwasnowparalyzedfromthewaistdown.
Anydiseaseortrauma,whetherphysical,emotional,ormental,
whenaffectingachild,seemsparticularlyunfair--especiallythe
illnessesIcallsocialwhichincludeabuse,neglect,starvation,
andabandonment.
Isimplycannotacceptharmtotheinnocent.
Justaschallenging,butlessdiscussed,arethechildhood
conditionsthatinvolvespiritualsusceptibility.Recently,amother
reachedoutbecauseherseven-yearolddaughter,whois
extraordinarilypsychic,hadstartedcuttingherselfwithknives
which the dark forces are telling her to do.
Yetanotherteenagegirlsmothershotoutafranticmissive.
Ghostslikelocustscontinuallyinfestedherdaughter.They ac-
tually strike her, when she tries to send them away,themother
sobbed.Red marks appear out of nowhere on her face or
body. I KNOW they are real.
Iamabelieverinlicensedcare.Somesituations,however,also

Somehowitissomucheasiertoperceivetheinnocenceina
childthantheunderlyinginnocenceofanadult.Likewise,itis
mucheasiertobuyabooklikeThe Secretandsearchforways
toforcerealitytochangethantoacknowledgethatwearenot
reallyinchargeofverymuchatall.
Workingwithchildrenhasnotonlystretchedmyheart,butalso
myphilosophicalunderpinnings.FortoolongandtoooftenI
haveboughtintotheideathatweareresponsibleforthatwhich
happenstous.WeAREresponsibleforwhatweDOandTHINK
aboutwhathasoccurredinourlives,butifabutterflyinSouth
Americacanstartahurricanethousandsofmilesaway,what
chancedoIhavetomonitorandmanageeverythinginmylife?
Why,90percentofthecellsinmybodyarenotevenmyown.
Theyaremicrobes,whichdonotevencarrymyDNA.
IamnotGod.
Ofcourse,wearetogrowinresponsibilityandaccountabilityas
weageandmature--inadditiontogrowinginlove,faith,good-
ness,andhope.Howcaneitheroccur,ifwearenotencouraged
towardgraceratherthanshame?
Inmybook,graceisloveconjoinedwithpower.Tobeginand
endahealingsessionwithgrace,forachildoranadult,isto
connectthatpersontoahigher,eternalsourceoflove.Onethat
willcreateconnection,butalsomotivateorempoweratrans-
formation.Ahealthyoutcomemightrequirebehavioralshifts,
butitwillalwaysnecessitateatransformationoftheheart,
whichisonlypossiblewhereloveispresentandanunderlying
innocenceassumed.Itisnotenoughtosupposeanunderpin-
ningofinnocenceforchildren.Wemustgrantthesamerightto
adults,ifwearetocreateaworldthatislovingandpeaceful.
Thisphilosophyisbestadministeredinmorethanourwork.
Whatmightoccurifweweretoalwaysoffergrace,asthefirst
andlastmedicineforeverythinginlife?Maybetheburnedfry-
ingpanwillnotscrubitself.Theboyshealthmightstillsuffer
fromtheirvendingmachinedietbutwemightallhavealittle

phonecontacts.TheChiefhungupthephonesaying,If you

chuckledathisresponseandfoundmyselfwillingtogiveitatry.
Itypedupaformevenaddingalineaskingaboutpetsand
farmanimals.Iprintedtencopies,gotinmycarthatvery
afternoonanddrovefromfarmtofarmdroppingtheminscreen
doorsorhandingthemtothepeoplewhohappenedtobe
home.ItoldthoseImetinpersonthatIwouldtypeupthe
informationandmakeaCommunityphonebook.Unfortunately,

FACINGUNEXPECTEDFEELINGS
Thehardestplaceformetogowastothattrailer.Itwasalmost
theclosest,butittookmethelongesttogetto,andIalmostdid
notgo.Ihadpurposelyavoidedit.UponreturninghomeIwas
surprisedatthetiming,IhadmadethephonecalltotheChief,
typeduptheform,printedit,anddriventonineneighborsin
wellundertwohours.Iwouldnotbelatefordinner.Ipassedmy
ownhouse,andfulloftrepidationturnedinsteadintothedrive-
wayoftheTrailer House Next Door.IkneweveryoneelsethatI
visited.OvertheyearsmykidssoldthemChristmaswrap,my
cowshavetrompedthroughtheirgardens,mycatdiedintheir
doghouse.Ihavelivedhereoverthirtyyears,yetthisperson,
thisfarm,thisstory,Idonotknow.
TheBlackberrybushesareclose,thetreesaretall,Idonot
knowwholiveshere,orwhethertheyhaveaferociouspitbull
chainedtotherottingfrontporch.Ibreatheandbegintoreason
-iftherewasaviciousdog,Iwouldhaveheardbarkingfrom
mybackyardandIwouldhaveheardbarkingwhenIdrove
intothedriveway.Iwouldhearbarkingnow,andyetasIlisten
beyondmybreathing,itisvery,veryquiet.Istepoutofmycar,
andbeginmyapproach.Something,ashadow,amovement
withinannouncesthatmyknockwillbeanswered,andforonly
amoment,thedooropensjustalittle.Therestandsanelderly
manwiththickglasses,abitofwhitehair,andallhunchedover.
Istammermyspielandhandovertheform.Thereisanodding
ofhishead,agutturalsound,ashetakesthepaperandcloses
thedoor.SpeechlessandrelievedthatIhavenotbeenattacked,
IhurrybacktomycarfullofquestioningaboutwhoIjustmet,if
hecanread,ifhecanspeak,andwhatIhavemissed.

Notoneformwasreturned.Itwashardformetounderstand
thisbecauseoneoftheneighborswasasexcitedasIwasby
theideaofthisneighborhoodphonebook.Atleasttheysaid
theywere.InthemeantimeIcalledandleftamessagewiththe
RedCross,theonenationalgroupwithwhichIamfamiliar.One
ofmymotivationswastogetprofessionaltrainingand(laugh-
ingly)covertlyinfiltrateanexistingorganization.Itcouldbean
undercoversleeper-typeoperation.OnceIgotontheinside,
onceTHEYknewme,Icouldandofcoursewould,bringHealing
Touchrightalong.Itwouldbeanaturalspringboardintooffering
whatIreallywanttooffer.TheRedCrossneverreturnedmycall.
Acoupleofweekslater,Irevealedmyfailurestothecommittee.
TheyencouragedmetocalltheRedCrossagainandlookinto
otherorganizationslikeCitizensEmergencyResponseTeams
(CERT)andGreenCross.Ididnotcommittoanything,butIre-
luctantlyagreedtoconsiderit.Partofmebelievesthattheright
dooropensattherighttime,andiftheRedCrossdidnotwant
me,thenwhyshouldIforcetheissue?Ididnotknowoneof

intoaCERTtrainingprogram,whichhappenedtostartina
coupleofweeks.
OVERWHELMINGIMPRESSIONS
ThefollowingweekwhenIarrivedattheemergencymanage-
mentoffice,Iamsurprisedatthesecurity.Ihavetosigninand
receiveavisitorbadge.Therearepolice,firemen,officialand
busypeopleincubiclesallovertheplace.Wheretheheckam
I?Iamretrievedbyafriendlyfaceandfamiliarvoice.Shetakes
mebehindthescenes,inaveryup-closeandpersonal,yet
surrealmanner.IamgivenatouroftheEmergencyOperations
Center(EOC)wherepeoplegathertosupportfirstresponders
inadisaster.Onthisday,noonewashere.Thereisnoemer-
gency.Allthestationsareempty.Thehightechcomputers,
phonelines,wall-sizefour-parttelevisionscreensareblank
andquiet--justwaiting.Recentactivationsincludedflooding,
severeweather,andtheplanningforamemorialtohonorpolice
officerskilledinthelineofduty.Mysonisarookiepoliceofficer.
AsIpickupacupofcoffeenearafallenofficermemorial,these
disastersfeelclosetohome.Iamdulyimpressedandfeelthe
impactofthisspaceonmyentirebeing.
Wesattodiscusstheflyers,brochuresandvolunteerpaper-
workthatarespreadoutintheEOCconferenceroom.WhenI
amaskedaboutwhatpositionIaminterestedasavolunteer,I
donothaveitinmetopretend.Itellherthetruth.Iwanttohelp
thosewhositinthosechairs,inthathighlystressfulenviron-
ment,andIcandothatwithHealingTouch.ItalkmorethanI
wanttoandIamnotsureImakesense.SoIjumpinwithhow
Iamwillingtoanswerphones,filepapers,orevenmanadoor.
ShehadafewquestionsaboutHealingTouch.Shetoldmethey
havetriedtobringinmassagetherapistsbutmanypersonnel
wereskepticalaboutthiskindofpamperingwhensomany
peopleneedhelpoutinthefield.Wediscussthedifferences
thatHealingTouchoffers.Thespacecanbesecluded,oritcan
bethekitchenorbreakroom.ThesimplepresenceofaHeal-
ing Touch volunteer mightbeamuchbetterfitinanEOC.Then
sheaskedmeifIcouldgiveatalkaboutHealingTouch,ashort
informationallecturetokeypersonnel.Yes, of course,Isaid.I
teach an introductory class that can be modified to fit time con-
straints.Wewalkedbacktohercubical.Iwaselated--andin
shock.WasIjustacceptedhere?AsaHealingTouchvolunteer?
ITGETSSIMPLEWITHHELP
Aswedrawtowardconclusion,ourconversationturnstomy
failedcommunityinvolvementproject.Shetellsmethatshealso
workswithneighborstoplanhowtheycanhelpeachotherand
shewouldbemorethanhappytocometomyhouseandtalkto
myneighbors.Whatdoyouknow?AllIhavetodoisinvitethem.
Wesetthedateandjustlikethat,Ihavesomethingplanned,

homewithafewformstocomplete,signandmailback.Iguess

Afewdayslater,Icomposedandtypedaninvitationforcoffee
anddiscussionaboutneighborhoodemergencypreparation.It
tookfifteenminutestodrivearoundtodistributethese.Ironi-
cally,thegentlemanfromthetrailerjusthappenedtobeonthe
highway,pickinguphismail.AllIhadtodowaspullover,roll
downmywindowandhandhimapieceofpaper.Itookthetime
tointroducemyself,andasheheldtheinvitation,haltinglyand
withdifficulty,hesaid,Earl, my name is Earl.
FASTFORWARDTHREEMONTHS
IhavecompletedthenineweekCERTtrainingandsimulation
His Name is Earl
drill.IhavebeenissuedastateEmergencyWorkerIdentifica-
tionCardandSaturdaywastheneighborhoodmeeting.Two
daysbeforethemeeting,Ionceagaindistributedflyers,which
thecountymadeandsentthatlookoh,soofficial,remindingmy
neighborstocome.NothingseemedtohavechangedasIdrove
downthebumpy,muddy,drivewayexceptmyfear.Therewere
nowordsfromEarl,andthedoordidnotopenmuchfarther.But
Iknowhisname,andhisnameisEarl.

Conferencesthisyear.Itwasourfirstyeartohaveadedicated
representativeattheConferencesinMinnesota,California,
OhioandNewYork.EachoftheseregionsofferedusaTableas
wellasanopportunitytoholdrafflesandofferinformationabout
theworkofHTWF.Webroughtin,throughthegenerosityofthe
participants,about$3,000,whichrepresentednewdonation
incometotheFoundation.
TheBoardsettheirmonetaryintentfortheAnnualHTPConfer-
ence.Again,thegivingheartsoftheHTPmembershipover-
whelmedtheFoundationwithnotonlydonationsfortheLive
Auction,SilentAuctionandRaffle,whichwasnewforusthis

Healing Touch Energy Balls
This dynamic tool for demonstrating how energy fows, now comes in new
packaging and with the words Healing Touch on the ball.
The Energy Ball is a wonderful tool for demonstrating how energy fows
through the body using simple conductivity. Simply touching the two contact
points completes the circuit of energy fowing in your body causing the
Energy Ball to light up and make a sound.
This demonstration works equally well with a group of people holding hands
to form a chain with two individuals each touching one of the contact points
to complete the circuit of energy.
