With the increase in milk production and procurement by the Karnataka Milk Fede
ration, the government has decided to extend the Ksheera Bhagya scheme the suppl
y of milk to 1.04 crore schoolchildren studying in schools and in anganwadis fro
m three days to five days a week.
* At present, 8.5 lakh litres of milk is being supplied to schoolchildren daily.
* The government has also decided to transfer an incentive of Rs. 4 a litre of m
ilk directly to the accounts of farmers through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) sc
heme.
* All farmers, who are supplying milk to milk unions, have been told to open ban
k accounts in the next one month.
The Cabinet sub-committee on NTR Sujala Sravanthi scheme to provide packaged dr

Import ban on milk items from China extended till June 2015. The government has
again extended the ban on imports of milk and its products from China for one m
ore year till June 2015.
* Prohibition on import of milk and milk products (including chocolates and choco
late products and candies/ confectionery/ food preparations with milk or milk so
lids as an ingredient) from China is extended for one more year, i.e., till 23.6
.2015 or until further orders, whichever is earlier, Directorate General of Forei
gn Trade (DGFT).
* India had first imposed the ban in September 2008 due to presence of melamine,
used for making plastics and fertiliser.
World Bank President Jim Young Kim has said India can save more than 27,000 liv
es and create over 128,000 jobs if it builds 1,000 kilometres of new bus rapid t
ransit (BRT) lanes in the next 20 years.
* Speaking at the release of a report Climate-Smart Development, according to whic
h $3-4 billion is needed to develop 1,000 km of BRT corridors in about 20 cities
across India within 6-12 years, Mr. Jim said India could also reduce greenhouse
gas emissions by about 42 million tons.
