Iraq Government ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) at 68
th session of UN General Assembly at New York making it 161st nation to do so.
* To enter into force, the CTBT must be signed and ratified by 44 specific state
s, only 36 of which have done so including France, Russia and Britain. The remai
ning eight are China, the United States, India, Pakistan and North Korea, Israel

The United Nations Security Council approved a resolution unanimously with bind
ing obligations on the Syrian government to eliminate its chemical weapons.
* The resolution was passed by a voice vote by all 15 members of UN Security Cou
ncil.
* The resolution asks the Organisation for Prevention of Chemical weapons (OPCW)
, Director General and the U.N. secretary-general to report non-compliance to th
e Security Council.
* If there is non-compliance, the Security Council by another resolution will im
pose measures under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter which allows for s
anctions and or use of military force.
* According to estimates Syria has more than 1000 tones of Sarin, Mustard and VX
