ABOUT ASIAN AMERICANS UNITED
Founded in 1985, AAU has worked in Philadelphias Asian American communities and in broader
multiracial coalitions around quality education, youth leadership, healthy neighborhoods, and folk
arts and cultural resilience.

AAUs accomplishments include:
1) developing the leadership of hundreds of youth since 1987 through the Summer Youth
Leadership Project, Chinese Youth Organizing Project and other programs;
2) catalyzing and sustaining the annual Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival, a youth-initiated
celebration of arts, culture and community that has grown into a beloved tradition of 17 years,
attended by over 5,000 people annually;
3) founding the Folk ArtsCultural Treasures Charter School, a K-8 public school serving 480
students citywide and specializing in folk arts and immigrant services;
4) winning a groundbreaking federal civil rights settlement with the School District of Philadelphia
to address bias and harassment in schools and improve climate and safety for young people.
5) spearheading a new policy collaborative focused on improving local immigration laws, addressing
education inequity, and promoting civic engagement and language access.

What do people cherish about AAU?

I always think about AAU as my political heart and home. It was the first program I was a part of
that took youth seriously . . . and taught us how to express ourselves and organize, which is a life-
long skill. Dao X. Tran, 1989 AAU Summer Program alumna

I used to not like to express ideas in front of others. I used to not think it was important if people
hear you agree or disagree, but now I feel more confident standing up for what I believe. Ling Lin,
2010 AAU Summer Program alumna

Mid-Autumn Festival has been AAUs great gift to the Chinatown community, and the community
has truly made it their own. Debora Kodish, Executive Director, Philadelphia Folklore Project
