AUChEEdS 2014

The ASEAN Undergraduate Chemical Engineering Education Summit (AUChEEdS)

2014 with the theme Educating the New Generation of ASEAN Chemical Engineers was held
at De La Salle University Manila, University of Santo Tomas, and Malayan Colleges Laguna last
July 17 - 19, 2014 in celebration of the Diamond year of the Philippine Institute of Chemical
Engineers. The event was attended by the different keynote and plenary speakers expert in
Outcome Based Education (OBE), officers of the PICHE JCL, Board of Examiners, Chemical
Engineering Professor, Chemical Engineers, and students from International and Local Schools.
The first day of the event focused on different seminars about Outcome Based Education (OBE);
the outcome of its implementation on International Schools.

Shaping Chemical Engineering Curricula to Meet the Demands of 21
st
Century
The first subject of the seminar was delivered by Dr. Felder author of the Chemical
Engineering Principles because Professor Duncan Fraser was in the hospital. The subject focuses
on the new defined curriculum based on the Outcome Based Education (OBE). This new method
is a good indication to be recognized on the upcoming 21
st
century where education status will be
different compared to old curriculum that most of the professors and students are familiar of. The
students graduated from an Outcome Based Education are expected to have a great mastery of
the subject as well as they have the ability to be competitive enough and have gain the
knowledge necessary for the filed they are into. The new approach for education as stated by
Professor Duncan Fraser is the improvement on teaching techniques that the professors could
offer to the student, likewise, the learning that the students can derive from the teachers. OBE
focuses on the mastery of the essential theories and principles from the different subjects that one
Chemical Engineering student must be able to learn in order to apply in the real world situations.

The AUN/SEED-Net: How it will contribute to the Quality of Future ASEAN Chemical
Engineers

The ASEAN University Network/ Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development
Network (AUN/SEED Net) provides opportunities in which human resource development
network contributes to the development of the ASEAN region. This network support Chemical
Engineers in their field of study as well as on the different graduate study programs,
collaborative researches and networking with the mobility programs. As discussed in the seminar
the Chemical Engineers that are trained and skilled in the institution must get continuous support
from the different network offering benefits for them to make them grow and soon add
contribution to the needs of the society. Associated with this is the technological advancement
concern in the Philippines. As projected our country is lacking for technological advancement
compare with other different countries resulting to continuous working of the engineers on
different countries. As a result of lacking engineers here in our country, the industrial problem
will continuously grow. The AUN/ SEED-Net has been a great support to acquire engineers to
have a better country.
