There are many things that we
take for granted, like looking at
the arrows on the lane or looking
at the blackboard in school.
For Johnathon Auch, its not the
same. He has trouble seeing the
blackboard, uses an IPad to have
his school book images enhanced.
And as for the arrows on the lanes,
he has trouble focusing on them.
Auch is not an average bowler
or student. Auch is legally blind.
But Auch recently rolled a
tremendous series of 665, a three-
game set which was twice as high
as his average. He rolled games
of 193, 244 and 208. The games
were his frst 200 games and it
marked his frst 600 series. He did
this bowling in the Saturday Cedar
Point League at Bay Lanes. He
was 332 pins above his average.

Rob Lublin was never a bowler
until last year. Although his family
spent time on the lanes, he just never
found an inkling for it.
Until sometime last season, that is.
I came with my brother (Steve)
and watched him bowl in a Poor
Charley tournament and he won it,
he said. I never bowled and never
got into it. But, I guess its my time,
now.
I was married and had some kids,
he added. But, now I am single and
my kids are grown, so what better
way to spend the day . . . at the bowl-
ing alley.
While bowling in the Poor Charley
tournament at Bay Lanes in Decem-
ber of 2103, Lublin captured his frst
ever bowling tournament title.
Lublin defeated Matt Boucher,
223-178 to win the tournament.
My brother told me dont social-
ize too much until I get some games
going, Rob Lublin said. It really
worked. I am real happy with just
winning a trophy (the money was
also good, he noted). I got one trophy
at the house for a hole-in-one. So, I
get to put this right next to it. I am
loving it.
Lublin, 52, bowls once per week
at Drake Lanes in Birmingham. Hes
been making the trip up to the Poor
Charley tournament nearly every
week. His only expense to start up in
bowling was a bag and shoes. Lublin
said he uses one of his brothers old
bowling balls because the ft was per-
fect for him, too.
Its good exercise and (you) get to
hang out with some friends, he said.
I get a chance to get away with the
guys.

than the previous year, took part
in the 2013 edition of the annual
Candy Cane no-tap tournament
fundraiser event, held in early
December at the Brentwood.
Wed like to thank every-
one who participated, said Lori
Comment, Brentwood owner.
It was a big success again (this
year).
The proceeds from the event
beneftted the Caro High School
bowling team ($582) and the
Kiwanis Club of the Caro Area
($60).
With a handicap, no-tap score
of 865, the winner of the $150
top prize was Mike Riley of Caro,
followed by Brentwood co-owner
Ken Beachy at 848.
Rileys son, Travis, rolled an
818 series, good for fourth place.
Finishing third was Traviss
mother, Dawn, whose 845 total
earned her $50.

Anyone who spends time around
the Friday Nite Live league at
Candlelite Bowl has, more than
likely, heard Sam Gatson use his
favorite expression after he rolls a
good game:
Bartenderbring me my
whiskey!
And, Gatson, 66, said it loud
and clear in late December fol-
lowing his frst career 300 game
after 23 years of league play in
the greater Saginaw area.
I was telling people, I had to
get one soonIm getting older,
joked Gatson, a native of Oak
Park in suburban Detroit.
Even though I wasnt doing
that well that
night, in the third
game I suddenly
realized I had the
frst six (strikes),
then the frst
nine
By the time I
got to the last ball,
I wasnt even that
nervous. I just
blocked out the
crowd and threw
it in the pocket,
recalled Gatson,
whose previous
high game had
been 290.
The perfecto was prompted, in
part, by some good-natured razz-
ing from a longtime teammate,
Dave McCol-
lum.
He kept
telling me,
you arent
gonna beat
me until you
get a new
ball, said
Gatson.
So, he
did. Gat-
son bought
a 15-pound

Its made all the difference,
added Gatson.
Following the feat, Gatson
couldnt help thinking about his
younger brother, Donald, a Sagi-
naw frefghter who passed away
several years ago.
He had a number of 300 games.
We used to go back and forth in
sports; he did some better and I
did other ones better, recalled
Sam.
CAnd I dont play golf, but he
was a real good golfer. I still have
a newspaper article about him get-
ting a hole-in-one in the morning
and a 300 game that same night,
he added.
The only thing that would have
made it (Sams perfect game) bet-
ter is if he would have been there
to see it.

There was no bigger thrill for
Ron OConnor than having his
grandson (C.J. Brocker) next to
him on December 30. That day,
while bowling in the Crooked
Creek Eaton Early League,
OConnor threw 12 straight
strikes in the second game for his
frst 300.
When he came out on the
lane, he just wouldnt let me go,
OConnor said. Thats the most
amazing feeling I have ever had.
He was subbing for a team next
to me. In the frst game, I shot a
207 and he had a 217. When I had
the 300 game, I told him try to
beat that, he laughed. OConnor
started the third game with three
strikes and fnished with a 256 for
a 763 series. A couple of weeks

Bypassing the 600 mark
More than 100 family members and friends were on hand on Sun-
day, Dec. 22, to watch the PBA tape-delayed broadcast of the Scorpion
Open. That was Saginaw's Tom Smallwood second of three straight
TV appearances as part of the 2013 World Series of Bowling format.
Smallwood took home the Scorpion Championship.

Mike Hollenbeck kept missing his 600 series this year. Although the
52-year-old right-hander has seen the 600-plateau before, its just been
awhile.
I would have a good high second game, he said. Then, the third
game I would fall apart and fnish in the 590s. I kept getting close even
in practice.
Hollenbeck missed the last 10 years of league bowling, mostly due to
family and work commitments. This year, his daughter Nicole started
bowling for Valley Lutheran High School. Along with that, one of his
friends had been bugging him for a couple of years to get back into the
game.
We started kind of practicing this year, Hollenbeck said.
Recently, while bowling in the Monday Nite 14 League, Hollenbeck
started out with a 235 and a 236.
I had the frst four in the third game and then went split, split, he
said. I was thinking, there I go, miss that 600 again. I made an ad-
justment of one board and left three pins.
I got away from the splits, he added. So then I moved another

Bob Woods frst started bowling
with his dad when he was a kid
when his dad would take him out
on Saturday mornings. He started
bowling in more serious competi-
tion a few years later.
My dad would pick up his
friend and his (my dad's friend's)
kid and the four of us would go
bowling, Woods said. Anything
organized wouldn't happen until
I graduated from college (Michi-
gan State University) and moved
to Midland in 1973.
Woods, 67, said he was work-
ing at the now-defunct Collinson
Construction in Midland when a
few of his co-workers decided to
bowl one evening.
They approached me and
asked me if I wanted to bowl and
I told them that I haven't bowled
since I had been a kid, he said. I
thought about it and I said, 'Ok,
let's have at it.'
Woods said he has been hooked
on league bowling ever since.
Woods now bowls on Monday
and Thursday nights at Northern
Lanes for Roese Contracting in
Kawkawlin, where he has worked
since 1983 and is now its Vice
President of Operations.
Despite being in the middle of
the pack in the standings, Woods
said he is still enjoying the sea-
son.
We may not be doing very
well, but we are having fun,
Woods said. That's the main
thing. If you can't have fun at this
game, it is time to get out. I have
always said that.
Personally, Woods said he isn't
having his best season.
I am not doing as well as I
would like, he said. One league
I am in the low 90s (190s) and the
other league I am in the 205-206
range. Those may be good scores,
but I expect more of myself. I
have averaged in the past more
than that.
Woods attributes what he con-
siders an off-year to just simply
getting older.
I need to make some adjust-
ments and probably need new
equipment, too, he said.
Woods' accomplishments over
the years includes two 300 games,
one at Valley Plaza and the other
at now-defunct Midland Lanes,
a 299 game in 2003, a 298 game
in 2001, and 770 series in 2011.
Woods believes bowling's popu-
larity has waned in recent years,
but does see bowling centers em-
ploying ways to get people more
involved.
It has really fallen down, but
you got to get the young kids in-
volved in it so they grow up liking
the sport, he said. I look at Val-
ley (Plaza). The reason they are
able to hold their own is because
Valley has got all the little kid's
game like putt-putt golf and some
video games in the bowling alley,
as well as the movie theater. So
there's things for kids to do while
parents bowl.
The thing that helps Northern
(Lanes) is they started a volley-
ball league in the summertime,
and that attracts a whole bunch
of people out there to stay at the
bar and buy drinks and stuff like
that.
Woods pointed out that one of
the advantages bowling has over
other sports such as golf is that
it costs much less to participate,
which could work in its favor to
make a comeback in popularity.
It is (a pretty easy game to
learn) and it is a cheap game,
cheaper than golf, and it one of
the cheapest games around for en-
tertainment, he said. The prob-
lem I see is that the leagues are
too long, (so) your commitments
are too long. You are starting in
September and you are going
through the end of April.
Woods has seen a lot of chang-
es in league bowling since 1973,
most notably with the equipment
and technical abilities.
The bowling balls have
changed drastically, Woods said.
Years ago if you had a ball that
hooked a foot that was an awful
lot, but now the manufacturers
have said that you show them a
lane condition and they would get
you a ball that would beat it.

A family feud broke out at the
Black Label Challenge on Satur-
day, Jan. 11 at Richville Rec.
Ron Krueger, one of the co-
founders of the Black Label Chal-
lenge along with John Lefty
Andrews, was the top qualifier in
this years event.
His father, Dick Coot Krueger
was second and Rons sister The-
resa Kubiak was sixth. And to
boot, Theresas husband Paul was
tied for the last spot (eighth).
Paul lost his one-game rolloff to
Al Meatte Sr.
After the dust had settled in
the first round, Theresa defeated
her brother in a semifinal match
while Coot defeated Mike Go-
dard in the other. Theresa then
met her dad and came away with
a 264-221 handicap win.
It was a last-minute decision,
Theresa said. I havent been
bowling much this year but Paul
(her husband) called and said
there was an opening. So I said
that I would bowl.
It is always great to beat (my
brother), she said. But thats all
in good fun. I still root for him.
When I bowled my dad, it was
hard . . ., she added. I just tried
to play my game and I was pretty
proud of him too.
Ron Krueger led all qualifiers
with a 1,001 actual score for four
games.
I had a new ball drilled by
Tom (Heins) from Ideal, he said.
I picked it up on Friday and it
worked out well.
Dick Krueger also was very
successful on the lanes.
I had 714 (actual) for my first
three games, he noted. All my
games were above 200. I was re-
ally happy with that.
It was a super feeling to be
bowling against her (Theresa),
he said. I thought that I would
put pressure on her by her going
first, but it backfired.

bowled a perfect
game on Nov. 9th
at Richfeld Bowl.
Richard is a ju-
nior at Kearsley
high school and is
a member of the undefeated (4-0)
KHS bowling team, with the season
more than half way completed.
On Nov. 26th,
Hannah Ploof
also from Kears-
ley, bowled a nice
800 series and be-
came the second
girl in Flint Junior
Bowling history to
shoot an 800 series.
Ploofs series con-
sisted of 288-254-
258 and she also used radical bowl-
ing ball. Ploof has been involved in
youth bowling for the past ten years.

bowled a 299 at a
high school bowl-
ing match on Jan.
4th at B's Bowl-
ing against Fenton.
Wykes is averag-
ing 210 as of Jan.
4th based on seven
games. He also

high scratch series of 476, her sec-
ond game was a 198.

Its not every day that the opportunity to become an
Ebonite International bowling ball tester comes around.
On Sept. 13th, 2013, I was one of four people chosen,
from across the nation, to actually live the dream. I was
also the frst woman that accepted a spot and the second
group of Average Joe bowling ball testers.
So you're probably asking yourself, How does one
get this opportunity? I was picked for this testing ex-
perience by applying to a contest on Facebook.
This dream job is also a reality for many of the staff
members of Ebonite International, as well as those
bowlers on the pro staff, such as Tommy Jones and
Chris Barnes.
The Ebonite International headquarters is located in
Hopkinsville, KY, more than 8.5-hour drive. The frst
day of testing was Friday, Nov. 8th from 12-5 p.m.
Upon arrival we were ftted by the in-house ball drill-
er, who drills for the staff and drilled are bowling balls
for testing.
Day one also involved touring the Ebonite Interna-
tional warehouse, factory and testing center. The ware-
house contained numerous bowling balls and equip-
ment ready to be shipped.
The factory, which was featured on How Its Made,
makes both bowling balls and pins.
It produces 2,500 to 3,000 bowling balls a day, on
average.
The testing center has four bowling lanes, in a tem-
perature-controlled room with an amazing (and really
expensive) lane machine, which has the ability to put
out various oil patterns, such as Kegels ice oil.
During day one, we were also tested for various
bowling statistics using top-secret methods of technol-
ogy. That night we were also treated to dinner and got
to stay in an hotel.
The second day of testing was Nov. 9th from 8 a.m.-3
p.m.
As soon as we got to the testing center we were given
an Ebonite legacy and source, along with two unknown
bowling balls that were drilled to ft us. The unknown
balls were going to be tested and the legacy and source
were the control balls.
The frst part of the testing consisted of throwing 20
shots as close to the pocket as possible.
This included using the C.A.T.S. (Computer Auto-
mated Tracking System) to record many statistics, such
as the ball trajectory, path, ball speed, etc.
We then had to rank the bowling balls using a scoring
system and make additional comments.
Being a bowling ball tester for Ebonite International
was a great experience and I am grateful to all those
wonderful people I encountered during my visit.
It was defnitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

years ago, has grown into one the
biggest, if not the biggest senior
league in the United States.
A couple of years ago, Bowl-
ers Journal reported that we were
the highest scoring senior league
and had the most teams, said Jerry
Weld, who has been the secretary
for the past 12 years. That was
when we had 32 teams.
The 38-team league (in a 40-lane
house) features many Hall of Fame
members from the Flint area. There
are also other Hall of Fame mem-
bers from other areas as well.
We have bowlers from Ponti-
ac, Saginaw, Corunna, Imlay City
and from all over, Weld said. The
league started at Northwest Lanes
and moved to Town and Country
for a couple of years before settling
in at Galaxy.
If you are bowling in this league,
youd better be ready to see the ball
hook right away.
Bowlers are allowed to pay for
practice prior to the league starting.
Then, with 10 minutes of warm-
ups, fve bowlers per lane with a
190-plus average per bowler and
you can see why lane conditions
will break down quickly.
But that hasnt dampened the en-
thusiasm for members to join the
league.
Bowlers pay only $10 in bowl-
ing fees. But thats when the fun
begins. There are strike-a-lite pots,
50-50 and the second game dou-
bles.
Bowlers can bowl with any
number of doubles partners and it
costs them only $1 per bowler,
Weld said. Sometimes those pots
can get up to $2,000 to $3,000.
The league is open to men only
and has more than 200 regular
bowlers with more than 40 subs on
the sub list. In order to join, you
must be 55 yearsof age or older and
have a minimum 175 average
We thought about opening it up
to women one time, Weld said.
But the wife of one of the bowl-
ers was better than he was. He was
pretty adamant about not letting
women in the league.
Jack Eisele has been in the league
since it began.
When it frst
started, we were
very small, he
said. As time
went on, people
started hearing
about it. As bowl-
ers got old enough,
they started to join.
People are coming
from all over to
bowl. These guys are all great to be
around.
Phil Satkowiak,
another original
member, keeps
bowling in the
league for the fun
and competition.
I used to bowl
in an all-star league
and the younger
bowlers got too
competitive and
pushed me out. Then, we started
a senior league. All those bowlers
are seniors now and starting to do
the same thing,
he laughed. There
are a lot of good
bowlers here. You
dont have to look
hard to see that.

started the league
in 1994, he said.
I remember that because I was the
Most Improved
Bowler in 1995 . . .
my second year in
the league. I have
a lot of friends in
this league. We
never expected
this league to get
this big.
Clarence
Snow Frazier, a member of the
Saginaw bowling Hall of Fame,
has been going to Galaxy Lanes for
the Duane Clinton Senior Classic
for the past two years.
He has been one of many Saginaw
seniors that have made the trip
down to Grand Blanc to enjoy the
experience.
A couple of guys wanted me to
join earlier than that, he said. But,
I was still working. I was looking
forward to joining the league once
I had retired.
There a lot of good bowlers in
this league . . . a lot of Hall of Fame
members. I also know a lot of the
Flint bowlers from the All-Star
matches. Its not a bad drive unless
there is a lot of snow.

Richfeld Bowl is celebrating its 40-
year anniversary, having frst opened
its doors in 1973. Since its opening, the
following people have been recognized
for their continuous service to Richfeld
Bowl: Karleen Adams, Dorothy Tubbs
and Don & Pat Pastor.
Karleen Adams is an employee at
Richfeld Bowl. She is often working at
the front desk, although this is not the
only department she has worked in. Ad-
ams is one of the only employees that
has, at one time or another, run every de-
partment at Richfeld Bowl, from the pro
shop to bartending, waitressing, mechan-
ic, managing, etc. Debbie Alexander, the
current offce manager at Richfeld Bowl
stated, Karleen is very honest, depend-
able, never misses work except for ill-
ness and tells it like it is.
Dorothy Tubbs has been involved with
the Double Jays a weekly mixed league
on Sunday nights, since its beginning.
She became secretary of the league after
its frst two seasons. In regard to her years
of service Dorothy Tubbs said, I enjoy
what I do; wouldnt do it all these years if
I didnt, The staff has always been good,
and I have made a lot of friends.
Don and Pat Pastor have been the sec-
retary/treasurer for the Kearsley Friend-
ship League since the beginning. What is
unique about this league is the fact that
it is not a money league, but all of the
money collected is put into the banquet.
Its been a lot of fun, great people on the
league and the bowling alley has always
been really good to us, stated Pat Pastor.
All those that were honored were giv-
en an engraved glass clock in recognition
of their four decades of service.

Deborah Alexander was chosen
as the 2014 Flint Womens City
Tournament honoree.
Alexander has been involved in
the bowling industry for the past 27
years.
She has participated in many
tournaments, and has held offcer
positions in several different bowl-
ing leagues and organizations.
Alexander has been bowling the
state tournament for the past 15
years, nationals for 12 years, the
state 600 Club for 12 years, local
600 Club for two years and the lo-
cal 700 Club for fve years.
She has also been really involved
in numerous leagues, having been
the secretary/treasurer for the Twi-
light Maniacs league at Richfeld
Bowl for the past 19 years.
Alexander has also been the sec-
retary for the Tuesday night Strikers
ladies league for six years, secretary
of the Blue Jay Flyers for four years
and Sergeant of Arms of the Thurs-
day Ladies league for 10 years.
In addition to her numerous lead-
ership positions in leagues, Alex-
ander has been involved in high
school bowling for past 13 years.
She has been President of the
Michigan High School Interscho-
lastic Bowling Coaches Association
(MHSIBCA) for the past fve years.
Furthermore, Alexander has been
involved in offce management
at Richfeld Bowl for the past 14
years.
I was shocked at frst, didnt
think I was at the age to be picked
for such a high honor. My husband
and his friends said that as much
time as I spend in the bowling cen-
ters with bowling, high school and
the word of promotion that the
award was much earned, stated
Debbie Alexander, in response be-
ing chosen for the honor.

The 11th Frame
Mike David captured the September National Senior Bowl-
ing Association event at Imperial Lanes. David qualifed 11th
and defeated Ed DeBlock, of Canada, 257-198; Dave Eatmon of
Ferndale, 227-198 and Ricky Hale, of Wilmington, Ohio, 221-
214 to advance to the title. There he defeated Don Boyed, from
Columbus Grove, Ohio, 226-218.
I was the frst bowler from Flint that won this title, he said.
I didn't bowl most of the summer. I decided to give it a try.
The one-day tournament had David roll a six-game qualifying block.
In the semifnals and fnals, David needed to strike out in the 10th frame to win both
of his matches.
This was special, since I hadn't bowled in many tournaments during the past three
years, said. I didn't know that I could still compete with them anymore. Now, I
do.

The Flint USBC is hosting the Greater Flint USBC Bowling As-
sociation Bowlers Appreciation Mixed Game Doubles Scholarship
tournament on Sunday, Jan. 26 at Holly Lanes. Each team will bowl
two regular games and two Baker games. There are two squads: 10 a.m.
and 1 p.m. The cost is $40 per team For information call 810.230.2740.

Then, after battling tough scoring
conditions, Greene was rewarded
with a berth on this years Junior
USA Team.
I was supposed to leave at 8:30
that night, Greene said. It was un-
til almost 2 a.m. before we left on
the last possible fight. I would have
never made it to the team trials if I
wouldnt have left that morning.
Greene arrived in Las Vegas at 5
a.m.
We had a practice session at
noon, he said. That wasnt too bad.
I got a little sleep.
I was lucky to be there, said
Greene, referring to his delayed
fight.
It was hard work, however, that
landed Greene a spot on the team.
I was expecting to bowl well
here, Greene said. I have tried the
last few years and had a good show-
ing.
In this years trials, Greene fn-
ished third among all the junior boys
during the grueling team trials.
On the fnal day, Greene bowled
in the frst squad and crossed pairs
with PBA Tour players Chris Barnes,
Mike Fagan and John Szczerbinski.
This was a good experience to
bowl the tough conditions and to
bowl with some of the best players
in the world, he said. I wasnt sure
if I was going to make it.
We bowled the frst squad and
had to wait for the women to bowl,
Greene said.
They had a ceremony at the end.
The top two bowlers received a spot.
Then they announced my name as
one of the selections.
It is the greatest feeling to be on
team USA, it has been a personal
goal of mine for at least four years
and it is just one of my greatest
achievements that I will never for-
get, stated Greene.
Greenes resume speaks for itself.
He bowled well in high school, has
a good collegiate bowling start and
fnished in the top 16 the last two
years at the Junior Gold.
His next step as a Junior Team
USA member is a training camp later
this June. From there, they take four
players to travel to Hong Kong and
then go bowl in the Tournament of
Americas.
Winning a National Champion-
ship, numerous MJMA tournaments
and making Junior Team USA are
just a few of the many bowling ca-
reer accomplishments that Tylor
Greene has earned since graduating
Davison High School in 2012. That
same year he was named Michigans
Mr. Bowler.
Following high school, Greene
attended Robert Morris University,
where he went to further his academ-
ic career as well as his bowling.
The RMU-Illinois bowling team
was the 2013 USBC Interscholastic
National Champions. In response to
how it feels to win a national cham-
pionship, Tylor stated, It felt amaz-
ing to win, it is something not a lot
of college athletes get to do; we prac-
ticed 3 hours a day everyday to get
ready for it and working that hard
at something will always bring suc-
cess.
Greene is averaging 208 based on
42 games for Robert Morris so far
this year.
I only bowled in 25 matches last
year, Greene said. I have more of a
starting role this year.
Ive been working really hard this
year, he added. Our tournaments
are giving us good preparation for
the nationals. Plus, we practice really
hard as a team.

team also placed frst in the Midwest
Collegiate Championships and the
8th Annual Roto Grip Eagles Baker
Challenge, having bowled a 300 bak-
er in game four of the ffth set.
That doesnt happen very often,
said Greene, who bowled the frst
and sixth frames of the perfecto. The
perfect game occurred in a tourna-
ment following his Team Trials ex-
perience
This (making the USA Junior
team) was defnitely my biggest ac-
complishment so far, he said. My
next goal is to get good enough to
make the Mens USA Team.
When asked what advice he would
give to those high school students
thinking about college bowling,
Greene added, I would tell them
to keep practicing and there is noth-
ing more rewarding than being with
your team every weekend competing
against the best teams in the coun-
try.
Greene would like to thank Danny
Hayes his college coach for work-
ing with him and his parents for
their support. Without them, none
of this would have happened, stated
Greene.

Bowling for children

Curt Zastrow loves his once-
per-year visit to a bowling center.
For the past six years, Zastrow
has been bowling at Valley Lanes
in Midland to help raise aware-
ness about The Childrens Heri-
tage Foundation.
They stay open all night long
for us and dont charge anything
for lineage, said Zastrow, who
was at Valley Lanes in early De-
cember. We get some donations
through this but there is no par-
ticipation fee.
This gives us a chance to let
more people fnd out what we are
doing, he added. Its a chance
for us to mingle. Our word-of-
mouth is one of our biggest ad-
vertisements. There are a lot of
university students that are under
challenge today. We can show
things they can do that can make
a difference.
Zastrow used to be a pastor, but
felt his calling somewhere else.
We wanted to reach out to chil-
dren, he said. We touched 50
million childrens lives. We have
done things for kids in Somalia,
(were) involved with a China
foundation and own 2,400 acres
in Indonesia. We use that land
for orphanages and hope to teach
agri-business to that area.
Zastrow admits hes not much
of a bowler, but he loves his 24-
hour duty at Valley Lanes.
We have a couple of lanes, he
said. Some of their staff (Valley
Lanes) bowled with us and we
have another group coming in lat-
er (tonight). Its really becoming a
cool event.

Then, the unexpected happened.
The break arm on the 7-pin
side broke off, said mechanic
Dave Longo. I was working on it
for about 15 minutes. But the way
this broke I was going have to be
working on it for awhile.
Ive been a mechanic for more
than 20 years,
he added. We
have had to move
bowlers before.
But, never when
someone sitting
on a 300 before.
One of the man-
agers of the cen-
ter, Rick LaRue,
was also there.
When Dave had mentioned
that we might need to move the
bowlers, I said we need to keep

The 50th annual Midland USBC Captain/Sponsor Tournament is scheduled
for noon, Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014 at Northern Lanes. This tournament is for
Midland USBC bowlers only. There will be a banquet to follow - catered by
Northern Lanes.
The Bowling Family of the Year and the Sponsor of the Year awards will be
presented at the banquet.
There will be prizes given away at the banquet.
The cost is only $20 per bowler. A participation fee of $5 is required for
non-sanctioned participants (excludes sponsors).

state tournaments, Woods and some friends started a tournament 20 years ago
called the Pawley Invitational Tournament, touring such places like Houghton
Lake and the surrounding area.
We were on teams on Monday night and on Thursday night and we were all
friends, but we bowled against each other, he said. We combined the teams
on Thursday night and we used to go to the state tournament all the time. We
found we weren't winning at the state tournament, so we decided to start our
own tournament.
The tournament was so successful in popularity that is eventually grew.
It was a 10-man tournament that eventually went to 16, he said.
The man who the Pawley Invitational Tournament is named, Tom Pawley,
died in January of 2013 and it was decided to keep the tournament going in
his memory.
Pawley worked at Ittner Bean and Grain in Auburn and Woods met him
through bowling, and just hit it off with him.
He was one of those guys that was just a heck of a guy to be around,
Woods said. Just an overall great guy and he is sorely missed.
Woods' idol was the late great Earl Anthony.
He was a quiet, unassuming bowler, Wood said. He had the best form of
any bowler I ever saw, and he was a staple on the Professional Bowlers Tour
every Saturday.
I am quiet and unassuming, but that's where the similarity ends, Woods
laughs.

The 33rd annual Saginaw USBC 700 Club Tournament will be held
Sunday, Feb. 2 and Sunday, Feb9 at Stardust Lanes at 3750 Bay Road
in Saginaw. To qualify for the tournament, you must have rolled a 700
series in a certifed competition and belong to the Saginaw USBC.
Registration starts at noon and bowling begins at 1 p.m. on both
days. There is a guaranteed frst place handicap prize of $500 plus a
$50 Zehnder's gift card. The Tournament is sponsored by Zehnders.
The cost for the tournament is $35. There is also an Optional Open
(Actual) Division; a Optional Senior Actual and a Senior Handicap
Divison. Seniors must be 55 years old or older.
There is a limit of 88 bowlers per squad.
Prizes in each Division will be awarded on the ratio of at least one
out of every six.
Sponsors of eight bowlers receive a $20 gif certifcate from Zehnder's
and are eligible for sponsor awards.

His bowling game has come a
long way. Auch, who just turned
16 in November, joined a bowl-
ing league for the frst time for the
2013-14 season.
After 36 games, Auch was aver
aging 111. Thats not bad for any
beginner bowler.
By listening to his coaches, and
with the help of a strong pair of
his average kept increasing. With
this big series, Auchs average rose
eight pins. His mother, Mary Beth
Auch, noted that Johnathan was
born with
Ocular Al-
binism. She

They can control it to a certain
point, she said. But theres noth-
ing to completely fx it. He had a
surgery when he was three to cor-
rect the lower muscles under the
eyes.
Hes at a stable point right now,
his glasses are lowering in prescrip-
tion and starting to stabilize, she
added.
Auch has never shied away from
sports or other school activities.
He played football in his fresh-
man and sophomore year at Cen-
tral, his mom said. He was doing
marching band at the same time and
jazz band in the mornings.
Then he threw this bowling thing
on top of that. What else, John,
she laughed. He does a lot. Noth-
ing is holding him back.
Mary Beth Auch has been over-
whelmed with all the help that
Johnathon has received through the
school system and sports.
Our school system has been
great with Johnathan, she said.
For awhile they had to enlarge all
the pages in his school books. Now,
with an IPad, he can enlarge it him-
self. They have all his books avail-
able for the IPad. Even, if he cant
read the word, it (IPad) will tell him
what the word is. Its so much easi-
er for him. Hes a straight A student,
his only downfall is reading. His
teachers give him the extra time he
needs to help with disability. They
have helped so much.
Auch has learned to cope with his
disability.
I have an IPad and some special
glasses to help me read the board,
he said. Usually, I sit in front of the
class. There are times my eyes get
stressed because I am trying to read
everything.
To put what Auch did with his
performance on the lanes into per-
spective, a 190-average bowler
could never be 332 pins above his
average.
I really wanted to bowl (this
year) and my friends (Brenden and
Trevor Payne) needed help, Johna-
thon Auch said.
I have been working hard on
concentrating and my mind set to
bowl, he added. I struggled early.
Sometimes I cant see far distances
and have trouble seeing the arrows.
I am learning when I do things
wrong and how to correct it.
It is getting a little bit easier, be-
cause they (his coaches Kathy Char-
bonneau and Ann Marie Payne) are
showing me new ways to throw the
ball.
Johnathon Auch has a daily re-
minder of his 665 series, because
his mother posted the recap sheet
on the refrigerator.
I didnt realize what I had done
because I was focusing on my
game. Everyone started congratu-
lating me, and I said what just
happened.
It made me feel really good
about myself, that I really achieved
something, he added. I try to go
above and beyond just to prove to
people, that I can do things they say
I cant.

Championship Tournament in
Muskegon from Jan. 11 through
May 18, 2014. The team event
will be held at the Sherman Bowl-
ing Center. Squad times are 11:30
a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and
9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Doubles/Singles event is at
the Northway Lanes. Squad times
are 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Satur-
day and 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on
Sunday.
There are two divisions based
on averages. Also, there is a
MSUSBC BA State Tournament
average for bowlers that have
bowled at least 18 games during
the past four years. The cost for
the tournament is $24 per event
with all-events optional ($7).
There is an optional scratch divi-
sion of $10 per event.

The 27th annual Bro Tour-
nament scheduled for Saturday,
Jan. 25 at Crooked Creek. Sign

The Michigan State USBC
Women's Bowling Association
87th annual Championship Tour-
nament is scheduled from Feb. 8,
2014 to May 4, 2014 (unless ex-
tended). The team event is held
at the Monroe Sport Center in
Monroe. Squad times are 10 a.m.
and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and
Sunday with the exception of the
Opening Day ceremonies on Feb
8 with one squad at noon.
The Doubles and Singles tour-
nament will be held at Nortel
Lanes, also in Monroe. Squad
times are 9:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.
on Saturday and 9 a.m. and 1:15
p.m. on Sunday. If bowling sin-
gles only, times will differ. Open-
ing weekend there are limited
squads.
There are three divisions based

an $3 optional All-Events fee.

Then, he was on the St. Charles
state championship team.
I have been so proud of him,
he added. He is an all A student
at Central.
OConnors highest series is
793, rolled about four years ago.
I would love to get a 800, he
said. I always thought that would
be the biggest thrill. But this (per-
fect game) was even better, espe-
cially with C.J. here to see it.

Hollenbeck fnished out with fve
in a row for a 233 game and a 704
series his frst series above the
700-mark.
I still didnt hit my 600, he
laughed. I wasnt even thinking
about it. After I started striking
again in the third game, I knew I
had a good series.
It wasnt until I turned around
after striking out in the 10th, that I
realized I reached 700, he added.
Hollenbeck has been using one
of his dads old bowling balls.
He died in 2005 and I had three
of his bowling balls, he added.
I kept only one of them to get
plugged and re-drilled. It was a
Storm Trauma Recovery.
Hollenbecks dad, Elmer, was
a 190-average bowler in the Bay
City area for many years.
His highest game was 298,
Mike Hollenbeck said. Im not
sure if he had used that one (Storm
Recover).
I got another old ball from Jim
Sonsmith, he added. It was an
old red Hammer. I used that ball
for the frst six weeks or so. Then I
switched to the Storm ball.
After several weeks with the ball,
Hollenbeck almost switched back
to the red Hammer.
The week before I had my low-
est series (481), he said.
But, I decided to give the Storm
one more week. Im glad that I
stayed with it.
It feels great getting that frst
700 series, he said. Now, I cant
wait to bowl again.
Unfortunately, Hollenbeck had to
wait an extra week as snow post-
poned the next week of bowling.

So Longo went to work. He stayed down by the pit area and manu-
ally worked on the lanes.
It was something that just needed to be done, Longo added. It
wasnt an easy fx. I had to work on it for about an hour after bowling
was done.
McNally was the recipient of Stardusts attention to detail.
I dont think I would have had a perfect game if I had to move, he
said. If we moved, we werent going to get warm-ups. I already knew
how the lanes (31-32) were reacting.
I was in my ninth frame when it broke down, said McNally, who
has seven certifed 300s and 18 altogether. I kept just walking around
(waiting for the lane to get fxed). Thats about all I could do.
I only needed to throw one more strike on that lane, he added
while noting he appreciated the efforts to keep him bowling on that
pair. All 12 balls were fushed in the pocket.
Since McNally had a potential 800 series brewing, Longo fnished
up the last game near the pits.
I couldnt strike in the third game, McNally said. The frst fve
frames, I left fve 7-pins. I ended up that game with a 190-something.
But Im glad we stayed on that pair.
Laura White and Bill Gates captured January's King of the Hill
Baker's Doubles at Crooked Creek. After winning the step-ladder
fnals, they defeated December's champions Brad and Melissa Mc-
Nally.
Henry Fee and Shawn Clifford fnished frst in the six-game qualify-
ing block with a handicap score of 1,464. White and Gates was sec-
ond at 1.415 while Terrence Richardson and Homer Cook were third.
The next Strikes n' Strokes-Crooked Creek Baker's Doubles is Fri-
day, Feb. 7. Check in at 7:15; bowling at 8 p.m.

in his usual Fri-
day night league
and then stayed
on to bowl in the
Michiganbowler.tv King of the Hill
series.
He ended up defeating Bobby
Wisniewski in the fnals. (See the

ments.)
My shot really didnt change
much all night, he said. I moved
maybe one half a board. It was
pretty warm so between shots I was
keeping my cool standing under the
fan. When I got up there (to bowl)
I made sure I got
myself focused
and took my
time.
I shot 670
in league bowl-
ing, he added.
But I learned
from that and
moved right and
kept it straight.
The ball started carrying.
Wisniewski, who had shot 794 in
league play prior to the King of the
Hill, added another 794 in the three
games of qualifying to earn the top
spot in the stepladder fnals.
My shot went from having fve
to six boards of area to maybe two
in the fnals, he added. I wasnt
carrying (for strikes) like I did ear-
lier in the night.
