Evaluation of an Interprofessional Pain Management Learning Unit at Kings College London
I would like to invite you to participate in this research project. You should only participate if you want to; choosing not to take part will not disadvantage you in any way. Before you decide whether you want to take part, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what your participation will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully and discuss it with others if you wish. Ask us if there is anything that is not clear or if you would like more information.
What is the purpose of the study and why have I been invited? The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Interprofessional Pain Management Learning Unit you will be undertaking and formally gather feedback. This survey will help us understand the impact on learners and plan for future educational initiatives. We are inviting all second year students who are taking part in the learning unit.
What will happen if I take part? If you agree to take part you will be asked to complete an online questionnaire on three occasions (15- 20 minutes each) to explore knowledge and attitudes before, immediately after and one year after undertaking the learning unit. Submission of a completed questionnaire implies consent to participate.
For the follow up questionnaires, we will contact all students via email. To thank you for your participation, you have the option to be entered into a prize draw to win one of two 25 Amazon vouchers. There will also be opportunities to provide general feedback online about the e-learning content and during the interprofessional workshop in the classroom.
Do I have to take part? Participation is voluntary. You do not have to take part. You should read this information sheet and if you have any questions you should ask the research team. You should not agree to take part in this research until you have had all your questions answered satisfactorily.
If you decide to take part you are still free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason. A decision to withdraw at any time, or a decision not to take part, will not affect your access or experiences during the learning unit. You may also withdraw any data you have already provided up until your username is removed from the data set after the final questionnaire (May 2016).
What are the possible risks and benefits of taking part? There are no foreseeable risks or direct benefits to you although results will be fed back to departments so that pain education can continue to be developed in your programme. As a participant you are entitled to a copy of the final report, please indicate whether you wish to receive this on completion of the first questionnaire.
Will my taking part be kept confidential? All information provided is treated in the strictest confidence and stored securely online. You will be asked to provide your Kings username as part of the questionnaire so that the follow up questionnaires can be linked together. When the final questionnaires are completed, this information will be removed so that the information is completely anonymous. The UK Data Protection Act 1998 will apply to all information gathered and is held on password-locked computer files. No data will be accessed by anyone other than me data will not be linked back to any individual taking part. Anonymised results will be summarised in a report, presented at local and national conferences, a peer-reviewed journal and disseminated amongst professional organisations such as the British Pain Society.
How is the project being funded? The project is being funded by a college teaching award.
