Hoxton Market

July 2014
Streetscene improvement scheme
This document outlines Hackney Councils
proposals for a Streetscene improvement scheme
along Hoxton Market (Hoxton Street). The
Council is committed to making Hackneys roads
safer for everyone living working and visiting the
Borough. Creating an environment that will also
encourage more walking and cycling is a key part
of the Councils transport vision and an essential
part of Hackneys Transport Strategy.
Why are we proposing a
Streetscene improvement
scheme?
The Council recognises that Hoxton Market is
a key economic and social centre within the
borough. The area attracts a significant number
of visitors from both inside and outside the
borough to its shops, restaurants and Saturday
market. The market is also widely used by the
local community.
As part of the Councils plans to regenerate
the area for residents and businesses, the
Streetscene department is planning to undertake
a range of improvements in Hoxton Market
(Hoxton Street). This will also improve the
amenity and quality of services available and
promote a safer environment for all road users.
The Councils vision is for a cleaner, safer,
accessible and de-cluttered street environment in
Hoxton Market.
What are the proposals to
improve Hoxton Market?
A new raised table at the junction of Hoxton
Street / Nutall Street to improve conditions
for pedestrians and create a gateway to the
market. The proposals will provide improved
crossing points, step free access, new trees
and more cycle stands. The existing archway
will be retained
New footway paving along Hoxton Street
between Nutall Street and Ivy Street.
Banning the left turn into Hoxton Street from
Nutall Street to reduce conflict at the entrance
to the market and also reduce wider rat-
running
A new extended pavement area with raised
speed table at the junction of Hoxton Street
and Ivy Street to reduce vehicle speeds
and provide an informal crossing area for
pedestrians.
New raised tables at the junction of Hoxton
Street/Purcell Street and Hoxton Street/
Shenfield Street. These will reduce vehicle
speeds and provide informal crossing areas for
pedestrians. The proposals at Shenfield Street
will help create a further gateway feature at
the southern end of the market
Increasing the number of cycle parking
stands by providing new carriageway and
footway cycle parking facilities. Carriageway
cycle parking is being proposed wherever
possible in order to improve accessibility and
keep the pavements clear for pedestrian use.
Proposed locations include - Stanway Street,
Hoxton Street opposite Shenfield Street and
Hoxton Street near the entrance of Hoxton
Community Garden.
New trees. Locations as shown are currently
indicative and may change
There will be an overall loss of 14 parking bays
and 14 market pitches as part of this scheme.
