ACT 600
Chapters 4, 5 & 6
What are the key points in the chapter?
Here, the author discuss that we can handle the value conflicts more confidently by
recognising in advance that these conflicts are a normal part of business. Also going through the
difficult situations over and over again can make conflicts easier to resolve. We think that our
values conflicts as an anomaly, a case that we never have to encounter. This can actually leave us
in a difficult situation when we actually encounter any conflict. Thus being unprepared might just
lead us to a situation that we have never came across. Recognising the values conflicts are a part
of the business, we are most likely to foresee ourselves for the king of disputes that we might
encounter. Few kind of values conflicts can be anticipated based on the kind of work we do.
People often use reasons for making requests that are unethical that are predicable at times,
which gives us a chance to judge them before hand and to make a considerate response. Hence
we can actually rehearse our responses and be prepared before the situation arise. Preparation is
the key criteria to overcome ethical conflicts. This makes us give reasonable response during
situations of conflict. Hence it is always advisable to remain true and influence others without
blaming them. Next the author says that people who try to voice and act on their values are the
ones who had really tried to achieve them in a particular situation. They have a sense about the
kind of impact that they want in their lives. Such a kind of thinking allows one to search their
strengths when in a situation of conflict. They also influence people around them to act ethically.
It is easy to get a narrower thinking when one is occupied with their work. Finding meaning of
what our work and experience provide, we find the strength and confidence to act and also
influence others. Questioning to yourself about the purposes that drove those inspirational

behaviours will broaden your views and you can use your strengths to resolve any issues and also
make others understand their purposes. The author discusses the importance of self-assessment
as a way to identify our strengths and ways to enact our values. We assume that only certain type
of people can act on their values. The main drawback of this is that if we consider ourselves more
risk averted, we might never get a chance to act on our values. Being quick, clever and play to
their own strengths, one might be successful in influencing the other in a personal conversation.
By crafting our words in advance we might be more effective and also make a strong influence on
others. It is important to understand who we are, who we truly wan t to be and how and when we
are most efficient, and use those strengths during dilemmas. Always being ourselves is the key to
align your strengths and style the values.
How has my thinking and behaviour been transformed as a result of these chapters?
These chapters has taught me how to voice their value during conflicts. I am able to deal
with the conflicts more skilfully and more confidently by recognising that these conflicts are a
normal part of life. Practicing difficult situations that we might encounter every day is a key to
resolve conflicts in a productive way. Also asking myself the purpose explicitly, I am able to accept
values conflicts as a normal part of a career and everyday living. Knowing yourself and knowing
what really matters to you and acting accordingly really matters. Self-assessing is the most
effective strategy to voice our values. Our self-story can be a source of inspiration, confidence and
guidance in our efforts to find effective ways to act ethically. Being ourselves and imposing an
unfamiliar identity on ourselves when facing ethical challenge is a way to align our unique
strengths.
