Section 6 - TURFING

6.1

STANDARDS OF CONSTRUCTION
Refer to Clause 1..1 of this specification, which applies to this section. Specification notes in the Contract
Drawings shall generally take precedence over this Specification, and the Contractor shall notify Engineer
of discrepancies with normal Vietnam materials, methods and practice.

6.2

NON-CONFORMANCE WITH STANDARDS


Refer to Clause 1.1.2 of this specification, which applies to this section. Any Corrective Action that
requires removal all of unsuitable material shall be carried back to an approved construction joint before
the replacement work.

6.3

SUPPLY AND SPREADING OF TOPSOIL


All topsoil supplied by the Contractor shall be approved quality, free from rubbish, roots, stumps, stones or
other extraneous materials, and well mixed with sludge in proportion of 3:1. Sludge delivered to site shall
be used for the turf work as soon as possible. Sludge stockpiled on the site for turf work shall be evenly
covered with a layer of topsoil.
The soil and sludge mixture shall be 50mm below the desired turf level and spread uniformly over the site,
slopes and/or berm etc where directed and shall be lightly watered if necessary, and then tamped with
wooden tampers and trimmed to the consolidated thickness required. The turf sods shall be planted using
topsoil only.
The Contractor shall be responsible for providing and fixing the turfs promptly after top soiling in order to
prevent erosion thereof due to wet weather or other cause. Any loss Of unprotected or inadequately
protected topsoil shall be made good at the Contractor's expense. A thin layer of topsoil shall be broadcast
on the turf to fill all depressions and give a smooth finish.

6.4

SUPPLY AND FIXING OF TURFS


For general turf works, the turf to be supplied shall be approved by the Engineer. he grass shall be planted
in accordance to the scope for spot or close turf to areas as indicated or the Drawings and as directed.
The area to be turf shall be clean weeded and all weeded materials, together with stones wood, rubbish and
other undesirable excavated materials, shall be removed and deposited in the approved dumping grounds.
The ground shall be leveled until uniform.
All turfs supplied by the Contractor shall be of healthy and vigorous stock and from approved sources. The
grass or turf shall be cut square and approximately 03x 0.3m(0.09m2) in size, and be 50mm in thickness. All
turfs supplied shall be free from weeds and care shall be taken to include as much of the root growth as
possible.
The turfs shall not be broken up into small pieces for planting and shall be planted as soon as possible after
being cut.
Turfs shall be laid side by side on the ground with gaps not exceeding 30mm where close turf is specified.
When spot turf is specified, gaps on all sides of the turfs snail not be more than 100mm. In the case of
banks or slopes, close turf is required, and each sod shall be held in position by wooden pegs to prevent
movement or displacement of any kind, and the turf shall thereafter be tamped down and rolled( except on
slopes) with a suitable hand roller. The pieces of turf shall be sunk into the ground so that they are flush
with the surface. All depressions between the pieces of turf shall be filled with topsoil. The turf shall on
completion present a uniform and regular appearance.

6.5

MAINTENANCE OF GRASS

Throughout the maintenance period of the Contract, all turf shall be watered regularly and weeded until it is
accepted by the Engineer. Any dead turves, badly growing turves or otherwise unsatisfactory turves shall be
removed and replaced with approved quality turfs by the Contractor at his own expense. After one month's
growth, the grass shall be cut with a suitable rotary mower to encourage the grass to creep on the ground
instead of growing upright. This operation shall be repeated at fortnightly intervals until the ground is
completely covered with grass. A mechanized reel cut mower shall now be used to cut the grass. This
normally shall be done about three months after planting. Unless otherwise specified, mowing shall be done
fortnightly by reel cut mower until the end of the Defects Liability Period.
Where the existing ground is around established and mature tree (with girth less than 200mm measured at 1
m above ground level) or around street furniture, the Contractor shall level the surrounding ground and
employ a weed eater or other grass cutting machine operated by nylon string cutting blade, to close cut the
grass right up to the bases of trees or street furniture without damaging the bark or furniture. To avoid
damaging shrubs, flowering plants or young trees (with girth less than 200mm), the contractor shall cut
grass right up i0 the edge of the flower beds Only or the weeded areas of such plants.
All cut grass, cuttings together with trimmings, loose stones, rubbish etc shall be collected and removed
Pram; the site and disposed off expeditiously to the Contractor's own dumping ground
6.6

WATERING
Immediately after planting, the Contractor shall water the trees and shrubs and continue to do so at least
once a day for 10 continuous days or until the trees and shrubs are well established and need no further
daily watering.
The Contractor is expected to water the plant at any time during the maintenance period whenever it is
required and as directed by the Engineer, all at Contractor's expense.

6.7

TURF/GRASS CUTTING WITHIN ROAD RESERVE


The Contractor is required to commence turf works progressively as the side tables are ready. Proper care is
to be taken to ensure that the turf covers the full area in time for the inspection by the relevant authorities
for taking over, otherwise the Contractor is to provide close turf all at his own costs.
