Preventive Measure In Reducing Motor Vehicle Theft

1.0 INTRODUCTION
The given line graph illustrates information on the statistics of motor vehicle theft in
Malaysia from 1980 to 2010. The vertical axis represents the number of cases where else
the horizontal axis represents the years shown. There were two types of vehicles been
surveyed which were motorcycles and private cars. At the same time, the sum of both
vehicle thefts were shown in the line graph too.
2.0 IDENTIFICATION OF THE MAIN TRENDS IN THE GRAPH
In the year 1980 to 2000, there were less than 10,000 cases of private cars theft.

This

figure increased sharply after year 2000 and the cases found more than 20,000 in year
2001. The cases slightly increased in between year 2001 and 2003 then decreased by
2003. The cases decreased consistently until year 2007. The figure of private cars theft
increased in year 2007 to 2008 then decreased till year 2010. Overall, the number of
private cars theft in the year 1980 to 2010 was reported below 30,000 cases.
Compare to the private cars, the number of motorcycles theft were same as private cars
theft from year 1980 to 1982. It was around 10,000 cases. After year 1982, the curve of
the motorcycles theft gradually increased and reached 40,000 cases in year 1998. The
gradual rise was obvious again and reached 50,000 cases in year 2004. Then there was a
sharp increased between year 2004 and 2006 which the number of cases hit more than
120,000 which again rose to a peak above 130,000 cases. After that, the cases gradually
decreased and dropped dramatically in year 2009 to 2010.
In conclusion, the total motor vehicles theft were increased from year 1980 to 2008
which reported cases increased from 30,000 to the peak of over 160,000 cases and
dropped to 140,000 cases by 2010.

3.0 SUGGESTION OF PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Taking preventive measures can minimize the chances of becoming victims of motor
vehicles theft. The most promising preventive suggestion is through the awakening of
owners.
3.1 Private Cars
An unlocked car with a key in the ignition is an open invitation to any thief, regardless of
any anti-theft device might be used. The common-sense approach to protection is the
simplest and most cost-effective way to avoid would-be thieves. Besides, windows of the
car always wind up and lock the car even if it is parked in front of house. In addition,
install mechanical equipment that locks the steering wheel or brakes to deter the
criminals and investigate the purchase of car theft security system especially for the
frequently stolen model cars. Furthermore, park in a well-lit area or high-traffic area to
secure the car when possible.
3.2 Motorcycles
Many motorcycles theft occur when the ignition is shut off but not locked. Therefore
motorcycles forks or disk brakes must be locked. Two or more locks of different types
are recommended because thieves usually equip themselves with the tools to destroy one
type of lock, but unprepared to tackle another of different kind. Besides, adding a
motorcycles anti-theft system can greatly reduce the risk of motorcycles being stolen.
Another simple way to prevent motorcycle theft is parking it in well-lighted areas or in a
garage, every now and then keeps an eye on the motorcycle, and if possible do not leave
the motorcycle unsupervised. Last but not the least, cover the motorcycle when the
owner is away.

4.0 CONCLUSION
The most promising preventive suggestions have given above. The other preventive
approach comes from the manufacturers of more secured vehicles with improved
environmental modifications at parking lots.

Essay 2

Be Environemental Friendly; Stop The Building Of A

Factory

1.0 INTRODUCTION
New factory set up often create many opportunities to a community such as new jobs
employments and increased prosperity. However the disadvantages of having a factory
in a housing area are greater than its benefits. Moreover the proposed factory is believed
to be environmentally hazardous.
2.0 DISADVANTAGES OF SETTING UP FACTORY
First of all, factories often create pollutions. It will destroy the tranquil and beauty of
our housing area. It will pollute the environment through thermal pollution, chemical
pollution, air pollution, and noise pollution.
2.1 Thermal Pollution
Thermal pollution is the degradation of water quality by the process that changes
ambient water temperature and release of excessive waste heat into rivers. It is a
phenomenon which the normal temperature of surrounding sources of water face an
increase in temperature. Thermal pollution has become a rising and the most current
pollution. One of the major causes of thermal pollution is the use of water as a cooling
agent in industrial facilities. Heat produced from factories is also a major contribution to
this pollution. Though thermal pollution does not impact human health directly, it may
have a great influence on aquatic ecosystem, fish species population and reproduction as
well as recreational activities.

2.2 Chemical Pollution

Chemical pollution happens when chemicals resulting from factory operating enter the
environment. The environment is damaged by chemical pollution. Chemical pollution
also poses both short-term and long-term health danger to us. Toxic gases released from
factory get into humans and animals body through the air we breathe, through the water
and that we consume and also through contact to the skin. The exact influence of the
chemical on the health of future generations cannot be assessed.

2.3 Air Pollution

Air pollution is the harmful substances that are being released

into the atmosphere.

Smog, acid rain, holes in the ozone layer and the green house effect are all
consequences of air pollution. It has been known to cause disease or even death. The
high-risk groups are the elderly, infants and pregnant women who are more susceptible to
air pollution. The side effects caused by air pollution are headache, allergic reactions and
lungs infection on growing children. Further to this, air pollution also affects soil which
becomes unsuitable for plants.

2.4 Noise Pollution

When excessive or machine-created environmental noise disturbs the environment, noise
pollution is formed.

The fact shows that the highest rates of noise pollution are

traditionally found in factory areas. Noise pollution can cause hearing problems which
can either be temporary or permanent. It may also lead to a poor cognitive function that
hamper our productivity and disturb our sleep which may decrease our ability to work
efficiently. A noisy environment can also be a source of heart related problems. It will
cause drastic rise in blood pressure and the heart rates also increases. Furthermore, noise
pollution can lead to increase in stress levels and cause headaches.

3.0 CONCLUSION
Overall, a factory would destroy the quality of environment in a housing area. In the long
run, the environment will be hurt and human health will be affected. The only way to
prevent this is to protest against the setting up of the factory in our community to prevent
the above pollution from happening.

Proposal To Have Bicycle Lane In Housing Area

To

: Members, Public Works and Infrastructure Committee

From

: Mdm Yap, Residents Representative

Date

: June 2, 2012

Subject

: Proposal To Have Bicycle Lane in Bandar Menjalara

Dear Members,
I am writing in on behalf on all residents in Bandar Menjalara to propose to have a
bicycle lane in our housing area. The idea is basing on the information that the residents
have gathered, we learnt that in most Western countries, they are well known for how
their citizens impassioned about green issues. They concern about the evironmentally
hazardous. They have some plans to protect enviroment such as using bicycles when
they can. We are glad of mirroring a worldwide trend to promote cycling as the preffered
mode of transport in our neighbourhood instead of making trips by car for short-distance
journey. As a result, bicycle lanes are needed in our housing area.
2.0 ADVANTAGES OF HAVING BICYCLE LANES
There is really no reason for our neighbourhood to wait much longer on this initiative
plan therefore put forward the proposals to separate bicycle lanes on roadways
throughout our travel area.
A bicycle lane is a part of the roadway that has been designated with striping, signing and
pavement marking for the priority and exclusive use of bicyclists. The lanes are clearly
marked with broken lines, generally on the left side of the road. It is one-way that
carrying bicyclists in the same direction as the bordering travel lane on the right side of
the roadway. If there is a parking lane, bicycle lane is located between the parking lane
and the travel lane.

14

Bicycle lanes help to mark out road space to provide sufficient space for the bicyclists.
They have been shown to increase the comfort level of bicyclists. This may provide a
safety path to the bicyclists to avoid accidents and also decrease the stress level of
bicyclists cycling in traffic conditions.

On account

of

roadways with a lot of

complicated intersections and interchanges increase possibility for crashes.

Possessed of bicycle lanes encourage bicyclists to ride in the correct direction of the
travel with the flow of traffic thus reduce wrong way bicycle riding. It promotes a more
orderly flow of traffic.
On the other hand, bicycle lanes indicate and remind the motorists that bicyclists have a
right to use the road and increase motorists awareness of bicyclists. Furthermore, motor
vehicles turning conflicts with straight-through bicyclists are to be prevented.
Additionally, bicycle lanes encourage bicyclists to cycle further away from parked
vehicles. It is very dangerous to ride in the parking lane because the bicyclist may hit by
the moving vehicles without purposely. Besides, there is a possibility that the driver or
the passengers of the parked vehicle open the car doors without watching around, and
strike the bicyclist.
Bicycle lanes also provide visual guidance to bicyclists riding intersections. The
freeway interchanges may give some less-experienced bicyclists a false sense of safety.

15

3.0 CONCLUSION
Bicycle lanes have to be considered when it is advisable to specify road space for
preferential use by bicyclists. The last but not the least, construct of bicycle lanes
encourage and increased the probability of using bicycles. Our neighbourhood will find
another leisure activity for themselves. Moreover, cycling consider part of an exercise
which brings good health. Of course, the proposal apart from considering the safety of
bicyclists, it promotes bicycling as an environmentally friendly way of getting around
our housing area, it saves time and petrol, reduce carbon footprint and healthier. The
efforts are important part of the neighbourhood to improve mobility and protect our
enviroment.
