Joseph Tinney. the grandfather of Thomas Miiton Tinney. Sr.. was the son of:
John Henry Tinney. born 23 Feb 1844, Harrison County, Kentucky, USA, died
23 June 1885, Kelat, Harrison, Kentucky, USA; he was a Civil War Soldier on the
side of the Union Army. John married, 05 Mar 1867 at Wm. RatlifTs house,
Harrison County, Kentucky, as his only wife: Louisa Lawson. Louisa was born
13 Mar 1848, Berry, Harrison, Kentucky, USA; died 26 June 1930; daughter of
Jeremiah Lawson and his wife, Nancy Toliver. The Lawson femily has been
published in: Our Family, by William Everett Lawson, (Kershaw, SC: By the
Comp., November 1978). Also, William Lawson. A Scottish Rebel, by Bili Porter,
(Radford, VA: Commonwealth Press, Inc., 1983); subsequent newsletters, etc.
Jeremiah Lawson fought and died in the American Civil War, on the side of the North.
Cynthiana, Harrison County, Kentucky, was the scene of a severe battle during the War
between the States. Jeremiah Lawson died on 17 July 1862, when General
John H. Morgan, with about 800 men, captured the town, which was defended by a
Federal force under Col. John J. Landrum. Much of the fighting was around the old
covered bridge over the Licking River, but Jeremiah Lawson refused to give up.
He died, as the last man, defending the old county courthouse.
John Henry Tinney. the great-grandfather of Thomas Milton Tinney. Sr.,
was the son of:

appears as Josiah Fleming Tinney: OR Lt. W. 0. Birds Balto 1 Present.

The pocketbook of Josiah F. Tinney Is still extant, with the following written:
"Josiah F. Tinney. his hand and pen
he will be good but God noes when
Do not steal this pocket book for shame."

Josiah F. Tinney, dated 15 Aug 1812- Chester Co. (County), Pa. (Pennsylvania).
This notation in his pocketbook, indicates that when Josiah F. Tinney left his father
John Tinney s residence in Kentucky circa 1812, he actually went to Chester County,

Pennsylvania, apparently on Brandywine Creek where his mother Jane or Joan Evans

was born, (his mother's Evans relatives still residing in the area in A.D. 1812).
Josiah F. Tinney (son of John Tinney and Jane or Joan Evans), his pocketbook.
He was b. (born) in Alleghany (Allegheny) County, (Pennsylvania), he is thirty (actually
25 years, born circa 1791) years of age the 8th day of April 1816 his father was born in
Maryland in Harford County and his mother was born in Pa. (Pennsylvania) in Chester Co.
(County), on Brandywine Creek and anyone fines (finds) this noat (note) book will oblidqe
me and brings it in harford Co. (Harford County, Maryland) 3 miles below lower crossroad.
It appears from these family records that relatives of John Tinney were residing in Harford
County, Maryland, as late as circa A. D. 1816.

married to Joan McClery. dated 23 Apr 1789, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania,
USA. Correspondence between WInfield Scott, Commissioner, and the
Honorable [Senator] Smith W. Brookhart, in the papers of the Revolutionary
War pension claim W. 9521, state that it appears:

John Tinney enlisted at Pittsburgh [Pennsylvania] in 1776 or 1777 and

served as a private in Captain Uriah Springer's Company, Colonel John Gibson's
Virginia Regiment. He was in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown, and
served until 1783; that he continued to serve until the close of the War in 1783,

when he was discharged in Pittsburgh, in the State of Pennsylvania. At the time of

the marriage in 1789, according to the testimony of Jane Evans, she lived with an
Uncle of hers by the name of Evans, who was a man considerably older than herself,
who went withjhem, to the Magistrate, sonie distance. There was but few present
at her marriage and the[y] mostly strangers to her and there being no family record of
marriage (it having been lost or destroyed) and her certificate of marriage being also lost
or destroyed. The other correspondence states that the soldier married soon after the

close of the Revolution In Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Westmoreland Is the

county east ofAllegheny County, Pennsylvania, In which latter county Is the city of
Pittsburgh.

Thus, this record Indicates the area of residence for John Tinney's wife, the widow

Jane McCiary, was somewhere In Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, within the

home of a much older Uncle Evans. Revolutionary War Records also Indicate that

John Tinney resided about Allegheny County, Pennsylvania until circa 1801, when he
was listed as being a resident of West Liberty, Ohio County, now[West] Virginia, USA.
They came to Kentucky from there In A.D. 1808, where John Tinney followed the
trade of blacksmith for a number of years In Kentontown, Harrison County, Kentucky.
From thence they moved to Nicholas County, Kentucky, where the future son-in-law,
Benjamin Gaunce, first became acquainted with the family and where the said
John Tinney died. John Tinney was allowed pension on his application executed
September 14,1818. In 1820 he was seventy-three years old [born circa 1747] and
a resident of Nicholas County, Kentucky. He died March 16,1835 In Nicholas County,
Kentucky. Benjamin Gaunce testified that he had charge of the said Jane Tinney
ever since the death of the said John Tinney, with the exception of a few months
until her death.

The New American Dictionary of First Names. (1983), notes that:

Jane (f) Is a form of Latin Johanna, feminine of Johannes (John).
The earlier form was Joan, but Jane overtook It In popularity from the
16th century onwards. Thus, Joan In the marriage record was also Jane.
She Is listed In (LDS FHC film # 442,984), US 1850 Census of Pendleton
County, Kentucky, USA, page 374, taken 03 Sep 1850, In family of her
son-in-law, Benjamin Gaunce, as Jane Tinney. aged 90 years, female,
born Pennsylvania, circa A.D. 1760. In a statement made by John Tinney
In Nicholas County, Kentucky, dated 4th day of July 1820, his wife Is
mentioned as about 55 years of age, old and unable to work, thus born
circa A.D. 1765. She was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA
and she died 26 October 1853, In Harrison County, Kentucky, USA,
leaving the following children: Josiah F. Tinney: Ernily, wife of

Benjamin Gaunce living In Harrison County, Kentucky; Lucinda, wife

of Lewis Shaw living In Nicholas County, Kentucky; and Jane Tinney
living In Pendleton County, Kentucky. They were allowed the pension
due their mother. Other children referred to In the case are: John, their

oldest son, who married In Pennsylvania and died there about 1838;
Margaret. James. Cyntha Ane. and Absalom.

In A. D. 1854, Lemuel Downard aged fifty-four years and living in Harrison County,

Kentucky, stated that he married Mary Richey. a granddaughter of John and Jane_Tinney.

Prentice "Thomas" Tinney was in the U.S. Navy. He had a great love for

Shakespeare, which was initially acquired while attending an Opera while on leave

in New York City. Dad could quote Shakespeare profusely and loved to do so,
whenever appropriate.

In 1928, Prentice was in Civil Service, Signal Corp, as Radio Operator, Fairfield

Air Depot, near Dayton, Ohio. Prentice Elliott Tinney. son of

Prentice "Thomas" Tinney and Hazel Kathleen Greene, was born 01 Jan 1929,
at Fairfield, Greene County, Ohio, USA; died unmarried 30 Dec 1943.

Prentice Elliott Tinney was the newest baby for that year in the area. The family

received many gifts from local merchants and this occasion was noted in the

local newspaper. This included about three months of coal and about $300
worth of goods. [He was LDS baptized after his death on 08 Dec 1945; LDS

endowed 09 Oct 1951. My mother greatly loved her first child Prentice Elliott
and was never to forget his untimely death. She always prayed to God that she
would die before she would ever see any of her other children pass away.
I remember my mother Hazel telling me he died from over- exposure and
pneumonia. He was in an old fashioned oxygen tent and Mom remembered his
terror of the noise of the machine as he died. She saw his feet become cold and

blue and the death process working up his legs. My mother always felt her first born
son Prentice Elliott Tinney would have led a good life and would not have died if
he could have been administered penicillin. It was not available because of World War II.
The doctor could not obtain it because it was being given first to the troops on the front
lines of battle. So, our family gave a life for the war effort.]
Prentice "Thomas" Tinney remembered that when he was in the Signal Corp he worked
the airship "Hindenburg" in the early 1930's. Things were different then. As planes
or airships traveled across the country, the communication was from airport to airport,

or region to region. [The German zeppelin "Hindenburg" burst into flames while preparing
to dock at Lakehurst, New Jersey, on 06 May 1937. It fell to the ground killing all thirty-five

passengers and crew aboard and one additional crew member on the ground.] At this time.
Prentice and Hazel were living on Darst Avenue. Dad worked at Wright Field as Radio

Operator - remote operator keyed to Fairfield. Homes: Next lived at Livingston Avenue in
Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, a short street between Lindon and Huffman Avenue;
renting a little house. Radio operator - military air flights and weather reports conveyed to
pilots.
From Livingston, the family moved to Edgar Avenue, with Hazel now pregnant with Marilyn.

The family was living at this time in a duplex rental unit.

Prentice now moved his growing family to a little farm, just outside the town of
Waynesville, Warren County, Ohio, on Route #73. This farm had twenty-five [25]
acres of land, a two story comfortable home, with furnace, electricity, bathroom
facilities and an additional structure: a barn for the horses and cows. Prentice raised

chickens and sold eggs on the side. The family had two cows while living here.

In A.D. 1942, Prentice was a Radio Engineer. The family moved back to Bidleman Street
at this time. One more child was conceived after Tommy was born in 1941, but it was

lost by a miscarriage due to the poor health Mom was enduring. By A.D. 1944, Dad had
become a Senior Radio Engineer; flying electromagnetic interference control.

accompanied by his 3rd wife Mary, at 1505 University Village-East, Salt Lake City, Utah.
He had a ham radio license at this time in his Rancho Cordova, California home and enjoyed

Prentice "Thomas" Tinney. the father of Thomas Milton Tinney. Sr., and his third wife,
Mary Louise Muegenberg, the step-mother of Thomas Milton Tinney. Sr.: their ashes have

been placed together at Calvary Cemetery In Sacramento, California. They were placed there
on 15 July 1997, at 11:00 A.M. The location is in the mausoleum facing south.
Mary Louise (Muegenberg) Tinney died on 10 July 1997. She had been hospitalized on
July 2nd for pneumonia. It was determined that she had a stroke. She was unable to swallow
and lost all of her sight in the left eye. She died quietly during the night with her daughter
Celina Barbara Wright (Mrs. Francis Charles Davin), Celina's son Brian and daughter,
Mary with her. The last few years since Tom passed away have been very difficult for Mary.
After Tom had his heart attack in June of 1994, Mary had a job and that was to make sure her

husband Tom was O.K.. during the night, and that he ate. etc. during the day. Tom passed
away 22 Aug 1995. Tom was great at quoting the works of Shakespeare, [William,
A.D. 1564-1616. English dramatist and poet], and rode a bicycle for exercise in later life.

between the States. Jeremiah Lawson died on 17 July 1862, when General

John H. Morgan, with about 800 men, captured the town, which was defended by a
Federal force under Col. John J. Landrum. Much of the fighting was around the old

covered bridge over the Licking River, but Jeremiah Lawson refused to give up.
He died, as the last man, defending the old county courthouse.

John Henry Tinney, the great-grandfather of Thomas Milton Tinney. Sr..

The pocketbook of Josiah F, Tinney is still extant, with the following written:

Josiah F. Tinney, dated 15 Aug 1812- Chester Co. (County), Pa. (Pennsylvania).
This notation in his pocketbook, indicates that when Josiah F. Tinney left his father
John Tinney's residence in Kentucky circa 1812, he actually went to Chester County,
Pennsylvania, apparently on Brandywine Creek where his mother Jane or Joan Evans
was born, (his mother's Evans relatives still residing in the area in A.D. 1812).

He was b. (born) in Alleghany (Allegheny) County, (Pennsylvania), he is thirty (actually
25 years, born circa 1791) years of age the 8th day of April 1816 his father was born in
Maryland in Harford County and his mother was born in Pa. (Pennsylvania) in Chester
Co.

(County), on Brandywine Creek and anyone fines (finds) this noat (note) bookwill oblidge
me and brings it in harford Co. (Harford County, Maryland) 3 miles below lower crossroad.
It appears from these family records that relatives of John Tinney were residing in
Harford

County, Maryland, as late as circa A. D. 1816.

married to Jpan McClery, dated 23 Apr 1789, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania,
USA. Correspondence between Winfield Scott, Commissioner, and the
Honorable [Senator] Smith W. Brookhart, in the papers of the Revolutionary
War pension claim W. 9521, state that it appears:
John Tinney enlisted at Pittsburgh [Pennsylvania] in 1776 or 1777 and
served as a private in Captain Uriah Springer's Company, Colonel John Gibson's
Virginia Regiment. He was in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown, and
served until 1783; that he continued to serve until the close of the War in 1783,

when he was discharged in Pittsburgh, in the State of Pennsylvania. At the time of

the marriage in 1789, according to the testimony of Jane Evans, she lived with an
Uncle of hers by the name of Evans, who was a man considerably older than herself,
who went with them, to the Magistrate, some distance. There was but few present
at her marriage and the[y] mostly strangers to her and there being no family record of
marriage (it having been lost or destroyed) and her certificate of marriage being also lost
or destroyed. The other correspondence states that the soldier married soon after the
close of the Revolution in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Westmoreland is the
county east of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in which latter county is the city of
Pittsburgh.
Thus, this record indicates the area of residence for John Tinney's wife, the widow
Jane McClary, was somewhere in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, within the
home of a much older Uncle Evans. Revolutionary War Records also indicate that
John Tinney resided about Allegheny County, Pennsylvania until circa 1801, when he
was listed as being a resident of West Liberty, Ohio County, now [West] Virginia, USA.
They came to Kentucky from there in A.D. 1808, where John Tinney followed the
trade of blacksmith for a number of years in Kentontown, Harrison County, Kentucky.
From thence they moved to Nicholas County, Kentucky, where the future son-in-law,
Benjamin Gaunce, first became acquainted with the family and where the said
John Tinney died. John Tinney was allowed pension on his application executed
September 14, 1818. In 1820 he was seventy-three years old [born circa 1747] and
a resident of Nicholas County, Kentucky. He died March 16, 1835 in Nicholas County,
Kentucky. Benjamin Gaunce testified that he had charge of the said Jane Tinney
ever since the death of the said John Tinney, with the exception of a few months
until her death.

The earlier form was Joan, but Jane overtook it in popularity from the

16th century onwards. Thus, Joan in the marriage record was also Jane.
She is listed in (LDS FHC film # 442,984), US 1850 Census of Pendleton
County, Kentucky, USA, page 374, taken 03 Sep 1850, in family of her
son-in-law, Benjamin Gaunce, as Jane Tinney. aged 90 years, female,
born Pennsylvania, circa A.D. 1760. In a statement made by John Tinney
in Nicholas County, Kentucky, dated 4th day of July 1820, his wife is
mentioned as about 55 years of age, old and unable to work, thus born
circa A.D. 1765. She was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, USA
and she died 26 October 1853, in Harrison County, Kentucky, USA,

leaving the following children: Josiah F, Tinney: Emiiy. wife of

Benjamin Gaunce living in Harrison County, Kentucky; Lucinda. wife
of Lewis Shaw living in Nicholas County, Kentucky; and Jane Tinney
living in Pendleton County, Kentucky. They were allowed the pension
due their mother. Other children referred to in the case are: John, their

oldest son, who married in Pennsylvania and died there about 1838;
Margaret, James. Cyntha Ane. and Absalom.

Tinney. Prentice [later called: Prentice "Thomas"], married 14 Mar 1928,

Newport, Campbell, Kentucky, USA; Spouse of HazeLKathleen Greene.
These are the parents of Thomas MjltpnJinney, Sr.. Prior to their marriage,
Prentice "Thomas" Tinney was in the U.S. Navy. He had a great love for
Shakespeare, which was initially acquired while attending an Opera while on leave
in New York City. Dad could quote Shakespeare profusely and loved to do so,
whenever appropriate.

In 1928, Prentice was in Civil Service, Signal Corp, as Radio Operator, Fairfield
Air Depot, near Dayton, Ohio. Prentice Elliott Tinney. son of
Prentice "Thomas" Tinney and Hazel Kathleen Greene, was born 01 Jan 1929,
at Fairfield, Greene County, Ohio, USA; died unmarried 30 Dec 1943.
Prentice Elliott Tinney was the newest baby for that year in the area. The family
received many gifts from local merchants and this occasion was noted in the
local newspaper. This included about three months of coal and about $300
worth of goods. [He was LDS baptized after his death on 08 Dec 1945; LDS
endowed 09 Oct 1951. My mother greatly loved her first child Prentice Elliott
and was never to forget his untimely death. She always prayed to God that she
would die before she would ever see any of her other children pass away.
I remember my mother Hazel telling me he died from over- exposure and
pneumonia. He was in an old fashioned oxygen tent and Mom remembered his
terror of the noise of the machine as he died. She saw his feet become cold and

blue and the death process working up his legs. My mother always felt her first born
son Prentice Elliott Tinney would have led a good life and would not have died if
he could have been administered penicillin. It was not available because of World War II.
The doctor could not obtain it because it was being given first to the troops on the front
lines of battle. So, our family gave a life for the war effort.]

Prentice "Thomas" Tinney remembered that when he was in the Signal Corp he worked
the airship "Hindenburg" in the early 1930's. Things were different then. As planes
or airships traveled across the country, the communication was from airport to airport,
or region to region. [The German zeppelin "Hindenburg" burst into flames while
preparing
to dock at Lakehurst, New Jersey, on 06 May 1937. It fell to the ground killing all thirtyfive

passengers and crew aboard and one additional crew member on the ground.] At this
time,

Prentice and Hazel were living on Darst Avenue. Dad worked at Wright Field as Radio

Prentice now moved his growing family to a little farm, just outside the town of

Waynesville, Warren County, Ohio, on Route #73. This farm had twenty-five [25]
acres of land, a two story comfortable home, with furnace, electricity, bathroom
facilities and an additional structure: a barn for the horses and cows. Prentice raised

chickens and sold eggs on the side. The family had two cows while living here.

accompanied by his 3rd wife Maiy, at 1505 University Village-East, Salt Lake City, Utah.
He had a ham radio license at this time in his Rancho Cordova, California home and
enjoyed

communicating with ham radio operators throughout the world, including behind the

Prentice "Thomas" Tinney. the father of Thomas Milton Tinney. Sr.. and his third wife,
Mary Louise Mueqenberq. the step-mother of Thomas Milton Tinney. Sr.: their ashes
have

been placed together at Calvary Cemetery in Sacramento, California. They were placed
there

on 15 July 1997, at 11:00 A.M. The location Is In the mausoleum facing south.
Mary Louise (Muegenberg) Tinney died on 10 July 1997. She had been hospitalized on
July 2nd for pneumonia. It was determined that she had a stroke. She was unable to
swallow

and lost all of her sight In the left eye. She died quietly during the night with her daughter
Ceiina Barbara Wright (Mrs. Francis Charles Davin). Celina's son Brian and daughter,
Mary with her. The last few years since Tom passed away have been very difficult for
Mary.

After Tom had his heart attack in June of 1994, Mary had a job and that was to make
sure her

husband Tom was O.K., during the night, and that he ate, etc. during the day. Tom
passed

away 22 Aug 1995. Tom was great at quoting the works of Shakespeare, [William,
A.D. 1564-1616, English dramatist and poet], and rode a bicycle for exercise in later life.
