PRODUCT OVERVIEW

CAG-600
Computer Aided Goniometer
The CAG-600, Computer Aided Goniometer, is an instrument for digitizing and documenting planar or linear
features in core samples such as bedding, fractures
and stylolites. The goniometer consists of the core digitizer, serial interface box and connection cable. Complete software is supplied with the goniometer for data collection and report analysis. The computer can be
supplied by Coretest Systems, or provided by the customer. The digitizer consists of a base plate, two rubber
rollers to place the core on, and several linear and rotary encoders which are used to monitor the position of a
stylus arm. The stylus is placed on the planar feature at several points on the feature and the program automatically calculates the orientation relative to the scribe line. An optional roller support is used to support
longer core samples. If the core sample is from a non-vertical or deviated well the dip and azimuth of the well
can be entered as a function of depth. The program automatically corrects for the deviation on the collected
data. Orientation and description data are stored in the main file called the well file. Data are collected in the
segment level. For each segment the user characterizes the sample depth, orientation of feature, and de-

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

ASPE-730
Automated System for
Pore Examination
The ASPE-730 Automated System for Pore Examination performs constant rate mercury injection defining pore structure
at injection pressures to either 100 or 1,000 psia. A number of years ago Yuan and Swanson (1986) introduced an exciting new approach for determining the fine scale structure of reservoir rock pore systems using rate-controlled mercury
porosimetry. The approach was based on a technique that injected mercury into a small core sample at extremely low
rates. During the process, the mercury pressure and volume were accurately measured. Coretest Systems, Inc. has recently developed the Automatic System for Pore Examination, ASPE-730, for determining the three dimensional architecture of pores using rate controlled mercury injection porosimetry. Major improvements in fluid delivery and pressure
measurement technology since the early work allow the ASPE-730 system to further expand the potential of this type of
analysis. Mercury injection under these conditions consist of smooth, reversible changes punctuated by jumps in capillary pressure, the sequence of which follows from the structure of the porous medium and the saturation history The resulting pressure versus volume curve shows a general capillary pressure curve shape with a significant number of measurable, nearly instantaneous, pressure drops. By calculating the volume of the pore segment occupied by mercury in a
given jump, the pore system can be classified into numbers and sizes of both pore bodies and pore throats. The ASPE730 system includes the integral pump coreholder assembly, temperature controlled chamber, vacuum pump, computerdata acquisition system, analysis software, printer and all necessary items required to start performing ASPE measurements. Mercury must be supplied by user.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

AP-608
Automated Klinkenberg
Permeameter / Porosimeter
The AP-608 Automated "Klinkenberg" Permeameter-Porosimeter is a cost effective advanced system for performing automated permeability and porosity tests at overburden pressures to 9950 psi over a wide permeability range. The AP-608 uses a pressure decay technique to determine Klinkenberg corrected permeabilities, slip and turbulence correction factors. Porosity is determined using a Boyles law technique. The unique
design of the AP-608 hydrostatic coreholder not only enables quick sample loading and unloading, but also
offers quick diameter changes in less than 5 minutes for the production oriented laboratories. It is now standard with a hydrostatic loading feature. Simply load the core in the core-holder, enter the test and core data
into the included control computer, and the AP-608 automated control system does the rest. Microsoft Windows compatible software, and other advanced features make the AP-608 the best core analysis system in
the world.
Note: Coretest Systems makes no warranties or representations when measuring very low permeabilities (<.1 md) using
helium. It is possible that the API standard pulse decay calculation method used in the AP-608 system may determine a
higher equivalent liquid permeability than is measured using a steady state flow system. For low to very low permeabilities we recommend using Nitrogen to obtain a more accurate measurement of Kl until this calculation issue is resolved.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

MIS-Series
Mercury Injection Systems
The MIS Series of mercury injection systems are designed for injection pressures to 15,000 psi which enable pore entry
radius measurements to below 0.01 microns. The systems include software that calculates pore entry radius, converts
pressure data to equivalent air/brine, air/oil, and oil/brine systems, and displays the data in tabular and graphical formats
that can be used to correlate the mercury injected data to reservoir capillary pressure characteristics. The measured
data is presented in cumulative and incremental tabular from with graphical representations of mercury saturation versus
pressure, equivalent system saturation versus pressure, and pore size distribution versus percent pore space in cumulative and incremental (Histogram) formats. A J-Function calculation for correlation of capillary pressure data across several systems is also available.
A sample is placed into the measuring chamber and a vacuum is imposed upon the system. The mercury level is then
brought up until the sample is covered. The chamber pressure is raised in an incremental fashion, injecting mercury into
the sample. This volumetric data is corrected for system variations to obtain injected volumes. Data is measured from
vacuum through the threshold pressure of the sample and on to 15,000 psi. Retraction curve can also be performed with
the MIS. Another feature of the MIS-Series is the easy opening chamber cap that offers repeatable, user friendly sample
loading and unloading. The coreholders are located in a temperature controlled ventilated chamber for minimizing operator exposure to mercury vapors.

A New Generation of Ultra High Speed Rock Core Centrifuges

The URC-628 is the newest generation of ultra high speed rock core centrifuges available to the
core analysis laboratory for rapid determination of capillary pressure curves and for sample
preparation. With the addition of an optional automation and data analysis package, the URC-628
can also be used to determine relative permeability curves for the displaced phases in both the
drainage and imbibition modes. The advanced automation package also speeds up the test
procedure with automated equilibrium determination and subsequent automatic progression to the
next step.

The URC-628 has a number of features not

available in previous high speed rock core
centrifuges, and is compatible with existing Rock
Core Centrifuge rotors, buckets and sample
accessories. For example, a standard or inverted
PIR 16.5 and PIR 20 rotor can be used in the
URC-628.

Coretest

Systems,

Inc.

is

manufacturer and supplier of these rotors and

accessories.

A Complete Solution for Laboratory Analysis

The URC-628 is a critical tool for the modern special core analysis laboratory. It provides the user
with an ideal technology to prepare samples for other tests and determine capillary pressure
curves. Features found on the URC-628 make operation simpler than ever before possible. The
addition of an optional data acquisition and analysis package provide a powerful system for
advanced testing and analysis. New overburden rotors and sample chambers allow for testing
under realistic reservoir stress conditions.

Rotor design, manufacture and safety considerations

Coretest Systems, Inc. is a Beckman-Coulter, Inc. Channel Partner. We design and manufacture
these rotors to strict tolerances and test them at high speed. Weight in each sample chamber is strictly
controlled during the machining process.
Standard and Inverted rotor/sample chamber assemblies and supplies for performing capillary
displacements as well as relative permeability tests, are available directly from Coretest Systems, Inc.
When ordering a rotor, it can be fit with both standard and inverted sample chambers. If a set of sample
chambers is ordered at a later date the rotor must be returned to Coretest to have it fitted to the rotor
being used or a new rotor should be ordered.
Typically 3 or 6 cells are used in each rotor and the rotor can accommodate both standard and
inverted type sample chambers.
The lifetime of a rotor assembly is determined by the amount of time it is used at defined speeds and
temperatures. Rotors and sample chambers will not last indefinitely and should be replaced when their
usable service life is up.

Rotor and Sample Chamber Assemblies

The URC-628 is the latest generation of centrifuge available AND is compatible with previous rock core
ultracentrifuge rotors, buckets, and sample accessories. Both the PIR-16.5 and PIR-20 can be used
in the URC-628.
Maximum rotational speeds are dictated by the rotor and the temperature of the test. An overspeed
disk attached to the rotors insures safe operation by limiting the maximum rotational speed.
Rotational speeds to 20,000 RPM are possible with the 1.0 6 place rotors.
New rotor and sample chambers include:
The PIRS-120 rotor for displacements by air/oil for six core 1.0 inch diameter by up to 1.0 inches in length.
The PIRI-121 rotor for displacements by water for six cores 1.0 inch diameter by up to 1.0 inches in length.
The PIRS-122 rotor for displacements by air/oil for three cores 1.5 inch diameter by up to 2.0 inches in
length.
The PIRI-123 rotor for displacements by water for three cores 1.5 inch diameter by up to 2.0 inches in length.
The New PIRO-124,125 Overburden pressure rotor/sample chamber is now available. This new rotor
design will enable the application of a constant confining pressure during rotation.

Basic History and Theory

of the Centrifuge in Core Analysis

Exploded view of a PIRS-120 standard sample

chamber.

The centrifugation of rock core samples for the purposes of

liquid saturation preparation and the study of capillary
pressure desaturation curves has been in use since the mid
1940's. The basic use of capillary pressure data is to aid the
petroleum engineer in determining the height of the oil-water
contact in a reservoir. A stable oil-water transition zone
develops in a reservoir over geologic time primarily as a result
of pore geometry, the different liquid densities, interfacial
tensions that exist between the liquids and rock material, and
the force of gravity. The force of gravity is very small and
therefore is the primary reason this transition zone forms very
slowly over geologic time. The use of a centrifuge basically
produces the same type of force on the liquids as does gravity
in nature, but since the force is several thousand times greater
than gravity, the time it takes to move the liquids in the core is
dramatically reduced. In comparison to the popular (yet very
slow) porous plate desaturation technique, the URC-628 is
much faster, and also extends the definition of the standard
gas/water capillary pressure curve from about 200 psi
(maximum for most porous plate) to almost 1300 psi across a
core sample.
As technology has developed, so has the accuracy and
versatility of the centrifuge. The URC-628 is today's state-ofthe-art centrifuge, offering better accuracy, programmability,
and optional computerized data acquisition for automated
relative permeability, as well as capillary pressure procedures.
The standard URC-628 also allows for elevated temperature
operation to 110 C.

NEW! Confining Pressure Rotor

and sample chambers
This is a unique system for running rock core centrifuge tests on core samples under realistic overburden
pressures. This new design (patent applied for) recreates a stress environment using a reusable unique cell
holder that is easy to use and reliable. These cells are perfect for use with samples that exhibit strong pore
size stress dependence or unconsolidated samples. The 1.5" cells are capable of operating at overburden
pressures to 4000 psi. The overburden rotors are available with interchangable sample cups for running air/oil
and water displacement tests. The 1.0" confining pressure inserts can operate at overburden pressure in
excess of 5000 psi. The 1" sample chambers can be used in existing PIR-16.5 or Coretest new PIR-122/123
rotors sample cups. The confining system requires a special sample loading apparatus in order to apply the
overburden pressure and must be purchased with the cells. Pore fluids contact only Viton, PEEK,
Polyethersulfone, and Titanium.
