Education has a great role in defining a persons skill and ability to enter

work environment. Education in collage is not enough to enabling student for


exercising and solving problems in the work environment, because it just covered
theoretical things and less practice. Students need to involve directly in the field
by following corporate internship programs in an institution or company that
related with their major so that they will be able to exercising and solving working
problems by utilizing their internship experience.
Consultant is one of the preferable industry segment to do internship
program due to its high intensity in analysis activity that enable student to
enhance their analytical thinking and having a multiple point of view in exercising
and solving an issue. It also has a dynamic work ambient because there is not
specific working hour, as long as employees done their project well.
Solidiance is an Asia Pacific-focused leading B2B growth strategy
consultancy trusted by Fortune 500. They team up with their customers to find
new sustainable and profitable growth. Their brand is synonymous with
innovation and client value creation, domain knowledge and a very specific Asia

analyst because client satisfaction is very depend on how an analyst exercise a
problems that could give the best input to the client strategy and create a greater
value than the other consultancy business.

Internship ScopeRuang Lingkup


During the internship programs, author work as a Junior Analyst that

supervised by a senior consultant. As a junior analyst, author only has one main

job, that is doing a deep-dive analysis on an issue based on the project. The
project could be comes from various industry. Due to the short period of
internship the author only has chance to do two projects on two different
industrial issues. In this internship report, the author will elaborate one of those
two projects, the one that explain the current e-payment and remittance market in

During the internship period, the author worked as a junior analyst
and worked on Indonesian Market Assessment on Remittance and B2C
Service payment project. The project was undertaken with a team headed
by a Senior Consultant. The project was completed within six weeks with
weekly system update in which Solidiance team should report the working
documents every week to enable the client to learn the results of the
analysis and make some needed changes. This project focuses on two
inter-related sectors, remittance and B2C Service payment.
Project Overview
Project name : Indonesia Market Assesment- Remitance and B2C Market
payment
The objectives of the project are:
a.

To understand the market size of major B2C services in Indonesia


and the channels used/preferred by consumers to make payment for
those services

To understand the remittance market (person to person only), both


domestic and foreign in Indonesia and the various channels, formal
and informal adopted to make remittance transfer.
E -payment is an electronic payment system that can be done

through electronic money, known as E-Money that enable customer to do


transaction without cash. Moneyless transaction was gaining popularity in
Indonesia , that condition attract the attention of PT XXX to analyze how
the current E-payment market situation in Indonesia. In this project, the e payment market exercise intended to determine which industriesthat might
be the target of e-payment usage in Indonesia. Junior analyst tasks is does
a deep dive in each industry segment to find the facts about the condition
of each segment of the industry and provide statistical data to support the
analysisto provide consideration to whether the client should installed its
e-payment instrument and supporting instrument to enable the usage of PT
XXX e-money card on those industry segment.

based on the use of e-payment in Japanese) that PT XXX want to analyze

a.

Mobile Airtime
Indonesian mobil subscriber is estimated to reach 326 Mn in 2013,
98% of which are prepaid. The top 3 GSM operators (Telkomsel,
Indosat and XL Axiata) together account for 77.1% of the market.
With a growth of &% during 2009-2012, the Indonesian telecom
market reached USD 9.8 Bn in 2012, the growth is expected to
slow in future driven by increasing competition. 90% consumer
top-up their mobile airtime using electronic voucher available at
convenient location across Indonesia. Top-up voucher sales (both
electrinoc and physical) is primarily driven by traditional channel,
which accounts for 90% of the sales. Modern retail stores primarily
sources top-up voucher direclty from telcos. Mobile operator
partner with banks, allowing users to top-up using their debit cards
through the ATMs, either of the same bnk or through ATM
Bersama Network (PT Artajasa Pembayaran Electronics).

Transportation
With a growth of 19% during 2009-12, the total market size of
commercial transportation in Indonesia reached USD ~ 16 Bn in
2012, 84% of which came from airlines. Lion air, the largest airline
in the domestics sector (with 42% market share), largely makes
reservation through travel agents accepting payments through ATM

transfer, credits card or cash. ATM and credit card are the most
preffered modes of payment for each of the channel.
c.

DHT
With a growth of 30% over the last five yaers, pay TV subscribers
reached 2.44 Mn in 2012. Being the only platform providng
complete covergae across Indonesia, DHT claerly dominates the
market with 88.8% share in 2012. The Indonesian Pay TV market
enjoyed subscription growth of 30%over the last five years mainly
driven by demand from growing middle class consumers, with a
monthly ARPU of USD- 7-17 per subsciber. The market size of
pay TV in Indonesia is estimated USD 374 Mn in 2012. MNC sky
(DHT based) pay TV enjoys 71% market share with 3 segmented
brands in the market. MNC sky vision TV accept payments through
a number channles, giving flexibly to its customer to make
payment. ATM payments and autodebit from visa/master card are
the most prefferable channles.

d.

Utilities
Total market size of utilities in Indonesia reached USD 7,530 Mn
in 2012 with 16% CAGR which majority portion were contribute
from electricity utilities. The utilities sector in Indonesia are
managed and run by state-owned enterprises :

E-Commerce
Growing at CAGR of 36% during 2009012, the transaction value
for e-commerce in Indonesia reached USD 1.1 Bn in 2012, with th
number of e-commerce buyers estimated at 4.1 Mn. The majority
(70%) of the e-commerce transaction in Indonesia are paid for
offline (via bank transfer, COD or Rekening Bersama system).
With USD 740 Mn sales in 2012, kaskus is one of the largest e-

commerce companies in Indonesia collecting most of its payments


through cash on delivery (COD).

Digital Content
The digital content market in Indonesia is mainly derived from
mobile devices, while paid content derived from device, such as
laptops and PCs, is still immature due to content piracy. The digtal
content market in indonesia, which is direcly generated from telcos
has declined at a CAGR of 35% during the period 2010-12 mainly
due to immature regulatory framwork.

g.

Insurance
With USD 15 Mn overall market size in 2012, Indonesias
insurance market is dominated by life aindusrance (70%), 16% of
which (usd 1.7 Bn) is contributed by individual customers.
Insurance premium payments are made predominantly through
auto-debit from bank accounts or credit crads.

h.

Micro loans
Micro loans in Indonesia consist of loans up to IDR 50Mn (USD
5,000) and serve both indiviadual and enterprise customers. With
86% of the micro-loans coming from consumers micro loans
market reached USD 66.2 Bn in June 2013, growing at 24.2 %
CAGR during 2011-13. Bank Account auto-debit u=is the most
preferred channel for installment payments for both banking
institution and non-banking institution.
The second sector that analyzed on this project was remittance

market in Indonesia. Remittance is the overall P2P funds transfer that

Domestic Remittance
Growing at a CAGR of 41% during 2009-12, the domestic
remittance transaction reached USD 10.3 Tr in 2012, with 95% of
the transaction executed through RTGS (Real Time Gross
Settlement). Cash carry and bank transfer are two preferred
methods for domestics remittance in Indonesia, together accounting
for 93% of the domestic remittance.

b.

Inward Foreign Remittance


A moajority (90%) of the Indonesian migrant workers remit money
at least twice every year back to Indonesia. The average remittance
amount (per transaction) is found to be around IDR 3 Mn (USD
300), although the pertransaction value varies significantly by
designation country of the migrants.

c.

Outward Foreign Remittance


Remittance outflows for Indonesia has grown rapidly (18%) during
the period 2007-11 to reach USD 3.2 Bn in 2012.

questions to the client.

Build an analysis skeleton to guide junior analyst to analyze the


problems that want to be solved and the discussing it with senior
analyst.

Gathering data and information by doing both desk-research and


direct interview with related people.

Do analyze the data and then present the analysis result in an


appropriate slide presentation.

f.

Discuss those analyses report with senior analyst in order to ensure


that junior analyst doesnt left any important point.

g.

Report those analyses to the client every week (weekly update).

Demanding client that always request for a deep-dive in every


industry segment, while the data about that segment is not
available due to difficulty in reaching people in those industries
segment to be interviewed is a very challenging condition to junior
analyst. Junior analyst must be able to using the available resources
and think-hard to formulate those resources into a valid analysis (of
course with validated data).

Most of the problems that appear are due to lack of experience in
both technique and knowledge in a specific industry. The way that

one that has been working on and having experience on related
industry also read some resources that could explain the ambient of
that industry. Sometimes it worked and sometimes not. If those
ways not working well, writer moving her point of view, it is
usually becomes broader view (which is will be easier to exercised)
or may be could be totally a changed point of view (somehow this
technique is not usually gives a different description about an
industrys ambient).

ConclusionKesimpulan
Corporate Internship program at Bakrie University has already given the

author experience that different with classroom learning activities. This program
has brought the author to feel the working atmosphere in one of Asias
management consultant trusted by Fortune 500. This place has become a great
place to learn and work with high pace of work, humble and friendly employees,
and nice working environment. The author is so proud for being given opportunity
to work here. The working environment has taught the author not only the real
workplace, such as how to cooperate with other employees that have different
level of temperament until the internee feel the work under pressure, but also learn
how to deal with people in gathering data through direct interview, it give a great
experience in author skill to deal with people. Another learns is related with the
author project, such as:
1. Getting additional knowledge about remittance and B2C service
payment market and another industry that related with those two
industries, because during the corporate internship author do a deep
exercise on its current market condition, giving a broad and deep
knowledge about how these industries generating income and how the
player in these industries compete each other.
2. Gathering data by interviewing the important people from a big player
company in a specific industries increase the authors networking and
also giving additional knowledge about strategy that those company
used in gaining competitive advantage to maintain their existences.
Overall, corporate internship program has meets its objectives to teach the
students to implement their ability in the real work place. Besides, uthor believe
that this corporate internship can also meet my own objective as a student. Thus, a

big appreciation is given to Bakrie University that conduct this internship program
and required the author to take the part in this internship. Besides, thankful
forSolidiance Asia Pacific that has given me the opportunity to do internship
thereand for its cooperative and helpful employee.
3III.2 RecommendationSaran
The author believes that Corporate Internship is a good program which will be
useful for the students but as well as the company and the university. However,
there are several things that the author wants to suggest for the company and the
university. Here is the recommendation for those parties:
1. For the company
The requirement for student must be more specific so that, students know
whether a position is appropriate for them or not. This condition also give
a positive benefit because company will not giving extra effort to training
the student when they meet the requirement that perfectly match with their
job responsibilities.
2. For the university
University need to provide a specific soft skill training for a specific
industry with different requirement. It will be useful for student before do
internship.
