1 Einleitung
Produkt, dessen Eigenschaften aufgrund seines natrlichen
Ausgangmaterials einer nicht geringen Schwankungsbreite
unterliegen.
1 Introduction
Quicklime is used nowadays in a variety of fields that place different demands on the product depending on the particular application. The limits of these demands are becoming more and
more constricted by ever more precise process control systems.
However, they relate to a product that, because of its natural
starting material, has properties that are subject to a considerable
range of fluctuations. Target-oriented production of quicklime
therefore requires an accurate understanding of the limestone
parameters that can affect the properties of the quicklime.
In the past there has been only very limited information available about the influence of the limestone parameters on the
quicklime properties. The relationship between limestone properties and hard burn potential was therefore investigated in a
research project supported by the AiF (Federation of Industrial
Research Associations). The aim was to produce a model that
was independent of the deposit and made it possible to predict the quicklime properties from a knowledge of the burning
conditions and the limestone parameters in order to improve
the process control and achieve more flexible adjustment of the
lime reactivity during the production of quicklime.
Limestone samples from 21 deposits were examined petrographically and chemically and submitted to burning trials in
a two-zone laboratory kiln with different temperature-time
profiles (Fig. 1). The quicklimes obtained were examined for
reactivity, apparent density and microstructure, and the influence of the limestone properties and sintering conditions on
the quicklime parameters was analysed. The results were combined in a model for describing the influence of the limestone
property parameters on the hard burn potential of the quicklime produced.

The influence of the limestone parameters on the burning behaviour, and hence on the tendency to sintering and the reactivity of the lime, is of great interest for the process control
during production of the quicklime, but so far this had not
been adequately investigated across different deposits. Extensive
burning trials under an atmosphere of pure CO2 with a wide
range of samples has shown that limestones possess various parameters that affect the burning behaviour [35]. The apparent densities of the different samples developed very differently
with rising temperature in heating trials after the calcination
had been completed (Fig. 2). The test conditions were identical
so the effect had to be due to the different material parameters
of the limestones. Apparent density and reactivity are directly
related to one another so it is clear that the limestone properties have a substantial influence on the physical properties of the
quicklime produced. Both the maximum achievable hard burn
and the amount of energy that has to be expended to achieve
it are therefore directly dependent on the material parameters
of the limestone.
In general terms sintering describes the process of consolidation of a sample that takes place due to the effect of temperature below the meling point [9]. This process causes a decrease
in length, volume and porosity and an increase in density and is

The enthalpy is in fact constant here but the rate at which the
reaction proceeds, and hence the rate of heat release, varies as a
function of the physical properties of the quicklime and is described by the quicklime reactivity. It is determined by physical
parameters, such as internal surface area, open porosity, CaO
primary crystallite size, apparent density and lattice defects of
the lime [18], which can change substantially during the sintering of the lime.

driven by the decrease in total interfacial energy [10]. It is characterized by, among other things, recrystallization with growth
of the larger particles at the expense of their smaller neighbours
[1, 7] (Fig. 3).
A hard burnt lime is produced as a consequence of sintering
processes that, as the effect of temperature progresses, lead to
an increase in apparent density and a decrease in the specific
internal surface area of the lime [1, 7] and therefore retard the
slaking reaction of the lime. The sintering involves the CaO
crystallites of the lime and can therefore only start when the
relevant area has been calcined. However, in practice there is
no sharp division between the two processes of calcination
and sintering. The calcination zone advances as a front towards
the centre of the test piece and leaves behind a calcined outer
zone in which the temperature rises. Sintering of the sample
can therefore take place in this zone although the core is not
yet fully dissociated [6]. This narrow sintering zone inside the
sample grows as the calcination front advances [11]. This means
that even with soft burnt lime a proportion of sintered test material cannot be completely eliminated either in the industrial
burning process or during burning trials on a laboratory scale.
Any notional differentiation between calcined and sintered
limes is therefore inevitably blurred.
3 Method
3.1 Sampling
Rock samples for the investigations were taken from the kiln
limestone stores of 21 lime works. The deposits were selected to
achieve the widest possible coverage of all the groups of facies1
used for quicklime production. Thin sections of the samples
were made up for petrographical description of the rocks, and
their chemical compositions were analyzed. After comminution in a jaw crusher the 24 mm size range was used for the
burning trials.

3.2 Brennversuche
All the burning trials were carried out on the 24 mm particle size range and all started with one hour of calcination at
1050C, followed by the sintering trials at varying temperatures and residence times in the second zone of the kiln (Fig. 5).
The sintering trials comprised the temperature stages 1100C,
1200C and 1300C, in each case with at least two different
sintering times. The trials are referred to below in abbreviated
form by their calcination and sintering zone conditions as a
sequential temperature-time representation. As an example
1050C/1h1200C/2h designates a sintering trial at 1200C
for 2 hours after the obligatory one-hour calcination at 1050C.

The great majority of the burning trials were carried out under an atmosphere of air without any active gas regime. A few
selected samples were also used to investigate the influence of
a reducing gas atmosphere. As a result of the Boudouard equilibrium this occurs locally in lime shaft kilns when coke is used
because the endothermic reaction
172.58 kJ + CO2 + C 2 CO
(3)
means that the equilibrium is displaced to the product side with
rising temperature and falling pressure [13].
(3)
So
Umsatzrate (logarithmiertes Umsatzratenmaximum) bestimmt
[12].

In

burn potential of these limes can be attributed to the fact that,
because of the absence of minor constituents, the diffusion of
solids can take place without any hindrance and is also assisted
by the large number of crystallite contact points in the closely
networked microstructure after 1050C/1h due to the high
deactivation potential in surface energy.

wirken nicht getrennt voneinander, sondern berlagern sich
gegenseitig.
The outlying value of one sample can be explained by differences in the facies. It involves a limestone that, because of its
fine-grained structure and its sintering behaviour with low apparent density, which increases only slightly on further heating,
can be assigned to the class of limes with LSF <103 that has
already been discussed.
The sintering behaviour of the great majority of the samples with LSF II values of 103 to 104 can be characterized
by (MgO+K2O)stand.. The effects of the individual parameters (in this case, for example, the lime saturation factor and
(MgO+K2O)stand.) do not act independently but overlap each
other. In the group of almost equal lime saturation factors the
influence of the (MgO+K2O)stand. parameter can develop virtually by itself so that there is a clear correlation. As soon as
there is a significant increase in the total impurities then these
correlations become less clear due to other interactions and
the correlation of apparent density with (MgO+K2O)stand.

These limestones generally have a very fine-grained microstructure with a high surface energy. When combined with a
high proportion of minor constituents this leads to the situation where initial sintering effects occur inside the clusters in
the calcining zone of the laboratory kiln at the same time as
the calcination. The minor constituents coat the interfaces of
the CaO crystallites and act as sintering barriers that effectively
prevent the solids diffusion from spreading to other clusters. As
a result these limestones exhibit a rapid early decrease in reactivity but in spite of this have a low hard burn potential.
