AIR SEPARATORS TYPE SEP

Many years of use and technology development of the traditional air
separators with internal air circulation, TYPE SEP, in their various evolutions, allowed us to understand profoundly the benefits but also the
insurmountable technical limits of such typology of machines and
have suggested us the points of force for a new equipment generation
project.

RAW MATERIAL
INLET

The air separators TYPE HPS along with the micronization and automatic selection mills TYPE S are the result of years of trials and research. They represent the most updated synthesis of this long experience gained by SIC in the field of micronized minerals production.
Our air separators TYPE HPS and the micronization and automatic
selection mills TYPE S cannot be considered solely machines any longer. Actually they are complete production systems which consent the
simplification of the engineering and the management of the plant.

Considering its consolidated technology and reliability we have,

however, decided to keep the separator TYPE SEP in our production
line and not to abandon its use in all those projects where a selection
of great quantities of material is required with a top cut value > 90
micron either in cases when a preselection is required before feeding
in more sophisticated systems such as an air separator HPS TYPE or
a mill TYPE S.

AIR SEPARATORS TYPE HPS

Utilization benefits
Stability of the granulometric quality of the finished product even in
presence of irregular feeding product both granulometry- and quantity-wise.
Deflocculating effect of the feeding product which allows to reduce
to the smallest the content of fines inside the rejected material even
if agglomerated.
Capability to select products with a top cut (d97) < 10 micron.
Possibility to alter continually the quality of the finished product
without mechanical operation and/or subdue to chromatic sensors
the top cut set value.
Simplicity of installation even in existent plants.
Self-feeding option - drawing the selection material within a distance of 25 m away from the selection unit and/or restore the fine
selected product to a distance exceeding 20 m.
Lack of dust.
High energy efficiency.

Principle of operation
The air separators HPS, in their basic configuration, consist of a
selection unit, a bag filter for the collection of the selected material
and a high efficiency centrifugal fan which generates a current of air
which is necessary for the system functioning.

AIR SEPARATORS TYPE HPS

The product which must undergo a selection is introduced into the separation unit either by means of mechanical transportation (bucket elevator,
screw, vibrating batcher) or, in the FLUX version of the separator, the material is sucked directly through the bottom of the separator.

RAW MATERIAL
IN LET

The current of air which crosses the air separator from the bottom to the
top meets the material and drags its finest particles towards the exit mouth
of the air separator.

FINE
OUT
LET

Along its way towards the machine outlet the material encounters the mere
selecting unit which consists of a squirrel cage frame which speed of rotation can be regulated by a frequency converter.
The particle of the material for selection is subdued to two types of force so
that it can cross the selection frame: the centripetal force generated by the
air current which crosses the selection frame and the centrifugal force
generated by the rotation of the frame.

AIR SEPARATORS TYPE HPS

In a simplifying way we could assume that the force acting on a spherical
particle dragged by the air current is of the following type:
Fk

= 0,4 x d2 x g x v2

Fk
d
g
v

=
=
=
=

force of entrainment
particle diameter
air density
air current speed

while the centrifugal force exerted by the rotation speed of the selection
frame could be summarized by a formula of the following type:
Fc

= 4.2 x d3 x s x vp2

Fc
d
s
vp

=
=
=
=

centrifugal force
particle diameter
density of the material for selection
centrifugal speed

The particle of bigger dimensions (<dmax) which manages to cross the

selection frame will be the one which satisfies the equilibrium conditions
between both forces calculated here above, while those of a bigger diameter, being subject to a prevailing centrifugal force, will be rejected.
The equilibrium conditions between the two forces which act on the particle may be summed as Fk = Fc

Pagina 6

AIR SEPARATORS TYPE HPS

in other words we can equalize and simplify the two equations:
dmax = 0.095 x g / s x v2 / vp2
if we convert the formula here above into engineering values which can be
detected easily in an industrial process and assemble all the values which
appear constant, we will be able express in a simplified way the formula
which regulates the operating of the selection system HPS as follows:
dmax = K x Q2 / RPM2
dmax = size of the biggest particle
which crosses the selector
K
= cumulative constant
Q
= range of air crossing
the selector expressed in m3/h
RPM = rotation speed of the selector
expressed in turns/minute
Hence, it is clearly deducible that the augmentation of the air range
which crosses the selection frame increases the top cut diameter
while augmentations of the selecting frame rotation speed decrease
the top cut values.

MICRONIZATION AND SELFSELECTION MILLS - S TYPE

The logical evolution of the HPS air separators was to install the selection head of a HPS
air separator on the top of the grinding unit
and achieve in that way not only a mill or a air
separator but a complete and self-sufficient
micronization and selection plant.
One machine which alone consents to micronize, to select and to transport the micronized
material.

Utilization benefits
Stability of the granulometric quality of the finished product even in
presence of irregular feeding product, both in size and quantity.
Capability to select products with a top cut (d97) < 10 micron.
Possibility to alter continually the quality of the finished product
without mechanical operation and/or to subdue the top cut set value
to chromatic sensors.
Simplicity of installation even in existent plants.
Possibility to restore the grinded and selected material to a distance of 35 m from the selecting and grinding unit.
Lack of vibration and external parts in motion.
Lack of dust.
High energy efficiency due to the lack of overgrinding effect and to
the self-regulating system for the working load.
Low noisiness and vibration.

DESCRIPTION OF THE GRINDING

AND SELECTING UNIT FUNCTIONING
Principle of operation
The installation of a grinding system with our TYPE S mill is very similar to the one described above in the section of our selection units
TYPE HPS.
Our grinding and selecting system consists of a screw measuring device
for the material for grinding, assembled integrally with the mill body; the
mill & selection body; a bag filter for the collection of the grinded and
selected material placed on the top of the collecting silo and a high efficiency centrifugal fan which sets the system in depression and carries
out the transport of the grinded and selected material.
The air intaken by the fan enters into the grinding chambers throughout
two silenced ducts placed frontally to the two disk wheels, then crosses
the grinding area of the mill and rises towards the selection unit.
Once crossed the selector, the air exits the selection mill group and reaches the bag filter inside of which the finished product sets down.
The material for grinding is introduced into the grinding chamber by a
dosing screw at a variable speed and is discharged among the two
wheels.
The screw speed is set subject to the intensity of the current absorbed
by the motors of the two grindstones in order to maintain a constant and
optimal working load of the mill even if the granulometry curve of the processed material changes.

DESCRIPTION OF THE GRINDING

AND SELECTING UNIT FUNCTIONING
The material for grinding is launched
by the centrifugal force of the hammers placed on the periphery of the
wheels, in a way to take up the energy
required for a grinding which occurs
through collision.
The grinding of the product occurs
through collision against the hammers,
through collision with the wearproof plates which are meant for the protection of
the mill casing, but mostly through collision between the very particles of the
material for grinding.
The material introduced into the grinding
chamber being of a sufficiently small size
or being submitted to reduction by the
grinding action of the mill, is entrained
towards the selection frame by the air
current which crosses the mill.
The material, which has already reached the dimensions to which the
machine has been set up to, will manage to pass through the selection
frame upon reaching it, whereas the coarse material will be sent back inside the grinding chamber by the force of gravity.
The particular lay-out structure of our TYPE S mill allows to minimize the
effect of overgrinding of the product, typical for the installations consisting
of mills combined with air separator, which brings to pointless energetic
expenses due to the overgrinding.
We contrive our machine selecting different materials for the hammers and
the shells, according to the characteristics of the material for grinding.
Furthermore, the wide nose doors allow a fast access to all the expendable
organs of the machine without the need of auxiliary instruments for an easy
cleaning or maintenance.

SPECIAL APPLICATIONS
The versatility of the TYPE S mills gives the possibility to easily adapt
them also for some very special applications such as:
exsiccation of materials during the grinding and selection phase,
through hot air brought in from external sources; a typical case for
this use is in the pet-coke micronization for combustible.
Grinding in a nebulized atmosphere with anticaking additives used
during grinding of those products which have the tendency to adhere to the surfaces and create sculls, such as the sodium bicarbonate used for the coating of exhausted gas neutralization plants.

SPECIAL
APPLICATIONS
the compact configuration of this type
of plant makes it suitable for the construction of grinding, selecting and
transporting plants built in advance in
a workshop, in order to reduce to the
minimum the constructing time on the
erecting yard for their positioning and
enabling.
