According to Jon Barker, President of

the UW-WC Student Veterans Club, the

40-minute presentation will include colors, provided by the local VFW and a

Falls School Board approve revised levy

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
The Menomonee Falls School Board
approved a revised levy Oct. 27 which will
include an additional downpayment of debt.
Voters approved the tax levy during the
annual meeting in September. The final
budget is later approved after the district
receives information regarding enrollment
and the amount of state aid it will receive.
The total levy that was approved by the
board Oct. 27 was $38,652,607, a 1.06
percent decrease from what was approved
at the annual meeting. The final, all funds
budget approved by the board is
$59,180,878.
At the start of his presentation, Director
of Business Services Jeff Gross said that
enrollment as of the third Friday in
September was 21 less than the district anticipated. However, there were 20 more students in the district summer school program.
According to Gross, the amount of equalized aid from the state was 12 percent higher than the district anticipated. He said that
of the $8,215,505 increase in state aid,
approximately $250,000 came from
increases in summer school attendance.
Summer school, not only does it benefit
kids immensely, it also give us a financial
boost, Gross said.
The district also received a $650,000
increase in state aid by keeping expenditures
under budget, according to information from
the district.
Gross also said that the district anticipated that the total equalized value in the village would decrease 1 percent. Instead, it
increased 5.99 percent.

That will impact tax rate, which is now

$11.53 per $1,000 equalized valuation,
lower than the 12.35 per $1,000 valuation
that was estimated at the annual meeting.
Under the final tax rate, a resident owning a
home that has an equalized value of
$250,000 will pay $2,882.70 in the school
district portion of the property tax, a
$205.49 decrease from last year.
With the increase in equalized value,
Gross said the district will see a decrease in
state aid next year, as equalized value
increased by 2.3 percent while the district
enrollment will also decrease.
Its going to hurt us in the aid formula,
Gross said.
With the changes in additional state aid
this year, Gross said the district had the
option that with the state aid increase, the
district would levy additional dollars to pay
off principal on debt while still having a
lower levy than last year. Gross said the district could save $115,000 over 10 years by
paying off the debt.
Board member Scott Ternes supported
the option to take advantage of increased
state aid to pay off additional referendum
debt this year.
Board President Faith VanderHorst noted
that under the revised budget and levy, the
district will pay off debt and save on interest
costs and there also be lower property taxes
this year.
So everybody wins, VanderHorst said.
When asked, Gross said the district
would pay off debt issued in 2007 as part of
renovations at the high school.
Gross also added there were several
other highlights in this years budget, includ-

St. Marys teacher receives

Celebrate Teachers award
Dr. Catherine Ferderbar, middle school
science teacher at St. Mary Parish School,
Menomonee Falls, has been selected to
receive the 2014 Celebrate Teachers and
Teaching Award from the Education Deans
of Greater Milwaukee (EDGM). The 2014
award focus is on teachers doing exemplary work in service learning. Ferderbar was
chosen for her hands-on approach to teaching and was presented with the award at the
second annual Celebrate Teachers and
Teaching event on Oct. 16th at Alverno
College.
The selection process for the award considered teachers that received their professional certifications at one of the EDGM
institutions and had a written nomination.
Ferderbar, who is a Marquette
University alumna and recently earned her
doctorate through Cardinal Stritch
University was nominated by St. Mary
Parish School Principal, Linda Joyner. The
nomination detailed Ferderbars ability to
accommodate to each of her students learning style and bring educational concepts to
life.
It is common place, for students to dissect, build, grow, write, sing, solve fictitious
crimes, create visual representations, graphic organizers, and even dress up like elements to demonstrate their knowledge, said
Joyner. She empowers her students with the
knowledge, skills and inspiration they need
to take action and make a positive difference in the community.
Ferderbars love of science and handson teaching style engages and inspires students in a way that helps them gain a
greater sensitivity for the environment. Many
of her students noted environmentally friendly changes they have implemented at home
due to concepts taught by Ferderbar in class
such as cleaning debris from storm sewers,
forgoing soapy water when washing cars,
and sweeping fertilizer off their driveways.

One sixth grade student was inspired by

Ferderbar to rescue several tadpoles from a
polluted sewer culvert and release the developed frogs into a clean river.
She has organized a school-wide recycling program, a student managed composting program, an after school science
and garden club and developed a program
in collaboration with Riveredge Nature
Center which will be offered to other
schools as a service learning experience.
The program, entitled Protecting Wisconsin
Ecosystems. teaches students about invasive plants and the role they play in destabilizing native ecosystems. Students learned to
identify, locate and properly remove the
plants in prairie and forest areas. As part of
the project, students shared their knowledge
with family members and neighbors in an
effort to decrease the impact of invasive
species in their own communities.
St. Mary Parish School, Menomonee
Falls, Wisconsin, is a fully accredited
Catholic school for grades K3 through
eighth grade. It offers full and/or half-day
program options for K4 and K5. Fostering a
positive sense of self within our students, St.
Marys dedicated and highly qualified staff
is committed to providing an environment
that promotes self-esteem, leadership and
respect for others. The school engages students in the learning process and encourage them to develop to their fullest potential
spiritually, morally, intellectually, physically,
socially and emotionally.

By Sam Erickson
Veterans Day has taken on a new meaning
for many Americans since September 11 and
the beginning of the conflicts in Iraq and
Afghanistan. Only a few years ago, many
Americans did not know an individual who had
been in active combat duty in the last 20 years.
After the Vietnam War, the military became
much less valued and much less popular in the
mainstream culture, but, today, all veterans are
honored for their service on Veterans Day.
The first Armistice Day celebration took
place in 1919 and marked the first anniversary
of the Armistice. Thirty states made it a legal holiday and President Woodrow Wilson led the festivities. Armistice Day was made a federal holiday in 1938, making it one of the most recent
holidays in America. The name was officially
changed to Veterans Day with legislation proposed in 1953.
Unlike religious and secular holidays like
Christmas and Thanksgiving, there are very few
official celebrations of Veterans Day in America,
although this too is rapidly changing as more
veterans return from Iraq and Afghanistan. If you
are interested in establishing your own traditions, there are many things you can do. Most
cities will have some memorial for soldiers lost in
war, and laying flowers or remembering soldiers
that you have known is a good option. While
there are active service men and women in the
field, you might consider sending a care package or just a thank-you card to a soldier. You
can even discuss the history of the holiday and

American military involvement with your children.

Most holidays in the United States have
been moved to Mondays to create a long
weekend. The same was done for Veterans
Day, but veterans groups protested and it was
moved back to the traditional date of
November 11. Most groups thought it would
raise the profile of the holiday, but it has, in fact,
had the opposite effect. While more people are
observing the holiday in recent years, most businesses do not close for the day. Only government offices and banks are closed. Official ceremonies center on the Tomb of the Unknowns in
Arlington National Cemetery in Washington,
D.C. A color guard from all branches of the military patrols the site through the night, a presidential wreath is laid and Taps is played over
the grave.
Veterans Day is both a state and a federal
holiday in all states. It coincides with international celebrations of Armistice Day and
Remembrance Day in other parts of the world.
The holiday is observed on November 11
because major hostilities in World War I were
ended formally at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of
November, the 11th month, in 1918 when
Germany signed the Armistice at the Versailles
Palace in Paris. Veterans Day has a different
focus than Memorial Day, as Veterans Day is
intended to honor and thank the living veterans
in the United States for their service and to
acknowledge their contributions to American
society.

funding for programs that impact community health, with a focus on access to health
care, healthy beginnings, and healthy
choices. Special consideration will be given
to coalitions, and programs that impact
alcohol and other drug abuse (AODA) or
mental health.
Over the last two years, United Way of
Washington County has expanded beyond
simple fund allocation. Their Mobilizing
Communities business model is a strategy
for creating impactful, lasting change by

identifying and addressing the underlying

causes of critical community needs. Each
year, United Way will accept new applications for funding under one of their three
impact pillarsEducation, Income, or
Health.
Health was selected as the first pillar for
funding due to strong responses from community conversations and the overwhelming
evidence of need.
Health is the one thing that is important
to everyoneits the foundation for success
in life, said Kristin Brandner, Executive
Director of United Way of Washington
County. We want to leverage strategic
partnerships and resources so that individuals are empowered to take control of their

John also has a passion to reach the

Though the VFW Post in West Bend,
he is actively involved with a Cub Scout

Flights.
In addition, John travels to numerous
schools throughout the state, speaking to
students as the VFW State of Wisconsin

Girls volleyball: Germantown sweeps

Mukwonago to qualify for state
BY TROY SPARKS
CORRESPONDENT

Waukesha - The Germantown girls

volleyball team earned a trip to the state
tournament by beating the top three
teams in their bracket.
Germantown, as a sixth seed, beat
Watertown,
Oconomowoc
and
Mukwonago to punch their ticket to state
for the first time since 2005 and their
fourth appearance overall.
In the Division 1 sectional final at
Waukesha West, Nov. 1, Germantown
swept Mukwonago 25-16, 25-14, 25-20.
When we were at our seeding meeting, we talked about how all those top six
or seven were all excellent teams,
Mukwonago coach Mary Pocius said.
Any one of them could win (the sectional).
Germantown Coach Ted Gollakner
said his team was prepared for the
moment.
We had confidence that we were
going to win, Gollakner said. The girls
knew where we stood. We studied film
before we came (to the game). We
looked at what (Mukwonago) bring to
the table versus what we bring to the
table. And we felt very good. It was really an inspiring pre-game, watching the
video because (Mukwonago) felt that
they came here with a lot of confidence.
We had more firepower. We think we can
take care (of business).
In the first game, Germantown took
the lead at 4-3 and never gave it up. The
Indians forced four ties throughout the
game but never led. Senior middle blocker Kayla Budgins had four straight kills to
stretch the Germantown lead to 21-14
and the Warhawks cruised to a 25-16
win.
Budgins, senior setter Carly Townsend

and junior outside hitter Chloe

Bingenheimer imposed their will on the
Indians with their ferocious kills and
blocks that helped Germantown build a
double digit lead in the second game.
Mukwonago, got off to a good start
in the third game and led by as many as
five points at 14-9, but Germantown rallied to tie the game at 17-17. After the
Warhawks took the go-ahead lead on
Budgins point, the Indians came back to
tie the game at 20-20. Germantown
scored the last five points to win 25-20
for the sweep.
The Warhawks took their 13-game
match streak and 36-13 record into the
Resch Center in Ashwaubenon to play
Merrill, Nov. 6. Making it to state was the
goal for Germantown.
This is the best feeling in the world,
Budgins, who had 11 kills in the game
and 21 in the last two sectional matches,
said. Im crying tears of joy right now. It
feels so good.
Pocius expected her Mukwonago
girls to put up a fight, but Germantown
wanted it more.
I had thought that it would be a lot
closer, she said.
Nov. 6: Germantown tops
Merrill in state quarterfinal
The Germantown girls volleyball team
advanced to the the WIAA Division I
semifinals following a 25-15, 25-22, 2514 win over Merrill in a quarterfinal at
the Resch Center in Green Bay Nov. 6.
Carly Townsend and Chloe Bingenheimer
led Germantown with 11 kills each while
Rachel Scaduto had 11 digs for the
Warhawks.
Germantown faces Divine Savior
Holy Angels in the semifinal. The Dashers
beat Kimberly 14-25, 25-16,25-10, 2519 in the quarterfinal.

Football: Cedarburg
runs past Germantown
BY TROY SPARKS
CORRESPONDENT
Cedarburg avenged a loss to
Germantown earlier in the season by beating the Warhawks on the road 42-21, Oct.
31, in the Division 2 Level 2 Playoffs at
Datka Stadium.
Cedarburg (9-2) used a 1-2 rushing
attack that ran for a combined total of 414
yards and scored all their touchdowns.
Germantown couldnt stop senior Jonathan
Stiever with their run defense. He ran for
279 yards on 26 carries and four touchdowns while senior Alex Shebesta rushed
24 times for 135 yards and two touchdowns.
(Cedarburg) executed what they do
well, Germantown coach Jake Davis said.
We knew what it was. It came down to the
little details. We had to execute (our
offense). They did that.
The scoring began for the Bulldogs in
the first quarter with 4 minutes 46 seconds
left on a 5-yard touchdown run by Shebesta
that ended a nine-play drive that covered
73 yards to take a 7-0 lead. Cedarburg
added another score late in the quarter
with Stievers 15-yard run to take a 14-0
advantage entering the second quarter.
Cedarburg scored in the second quarter with 8:19 remaining in the half on
Stievers second touchdown from 1-yard
that gave the Bulldogs a 21-0 lead. The
Warhawks responded with a 16-play, 58yard drive that took 5:19 off the clock when
senior quarterback Dwayne Lawhorn Jr.
crossed the end zone from 1-yard out with

3:00 left to trail 21-7 at the half.

The Bulldogs kept pounding the ball on
the ground in the second half and
Germantown couldnt stop it. Shebesta got
his second and final touchdown of the
game on a 15-yard run with 8:35 in the
third quarter to increase their lead to 28-7.
The Warhawks struck back on a 12-yard
touchdown from Lawton to 6-foot-4 senior
receiver Steve Doran, who had a 3-inch
advantage over Cedarburg junior defensive back Matt Hokanson with 4:42 in the
third. A 70-yard run by Stiever late in the
quarter silenced the crowd to lead 35-14
going into the final quarter. Both teams
scored a touchdown each in the fourth
quarter. Stievers 37-yard touchdown was
his fourth of the game. Senior tight end
Cole Karcz caught a 16-yard touchdown
pass from Lawhorn to complete the scoring.
It was a sad ending for the Warhawks,
but it didnt dampen what they accomplished during the season.
Our seniors are a great group of kids,
and thats what I want them to understand,
Davis said, was the hard work that they
put in and all the things that they accomplished this season arent gone because of
this game. They are an outstanding group
of young men and Im going to really miss
them. Thats the hardest part about all of
this.
Lawhorn had a bad day, completing
nine of 22 passes for 97 yards. Junior running back Pethan Spencer ran 15 times for
57 yards for Germantown. Cedarburg led
Germantown in total yards 503-206. The
Warhawks finished their season at 9-2.

Cross country: 4 runners

finish season at state meet
Three local runners finished in the middle
of the field at the state cross country meet
held at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin
Rapids Nov. 1.
Emma Woefel of Hamilton finished 81st
with a time 20:00.59, Alyssa Goesch of
Germantown finished 83rd with a time of

20:01.56 while Brianna Klopfer of

Germantown finished 115th with a time of

Boys state soccer tournament

Hilltoppers stop Falls for Division I title

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
The Menomonee Falls boys soccer
team staged an improbable comeback on
the second night of the boys state soccer
tournament last weekend only to fall to a
Greater Metro Conference rival in the final
game of the 2014 season the next evening.
This group comes in loose, there is a
quiet
confidence
about
them,
Menomonee Falls Coach Scott Stein said
after a WIAA Division I semifinal game
against Beloit Memorial that was tied 5-5
after overtime and decided on a shootout.
We have nine seniors starters that nobody
thought much of us at the start of the year.
These guys, they believe. Theyre light at
practice, they come to play.
Oct. 31: Against the odds
Menomonee Falls scored twice in the
final 10 minutes of regulation against
Beloit Memorial in a state Division I semifinal Oct. 31 to force a 4-4 tie, setting the
stage for a shootout that the Indians won to
advance to the state title game the next
evening.
The teams were tied 5-5 at the end of
the two overtime period. Menomonee Falls
won the shootout as Will Genthe stopped
the final penalty kick from Beloit Memorial.
Obviously, its surreal, I did not have a
good game up until that point, Genthe
said of the shootout. I missed a few of the
goals I should have had. God gave me the
opportunity to get to (penalty kicks), to
make those saves, to get to overtime
everything is just incredible.
Genthe noted that video of Beloit
Memorial penalty kicks were on a
Facebook page. Genthe said he looked at
the video and saw the first three penalty
kicks Memorial took against Kettle
Moraine a week earlier, which gave him
an idea of which direction the shots would
be going.

My last save was a total guess,

though, Genthe said.
Menomonee Falls started the game at
a disadvantage, as it was playing into a
strong wind gusting from the north. Jose
Barron got the Purple Nights on the board
with a goal at at the 20:22 mark. Barron
then assisted Ricardo Ramos on a goal at
the 32:40 mark.
Ramos gave Memorial a 3-0 lead at
the 67:44 mark of the second half.
Menomonee Falls, with the wind now to its
advantage, got on the board on a goal
from Brandon Dantone at the 69:36 mark,
which came off a free kick by Kay Olapo.
Olapo then closed the gap further for the
Falls with a goal off a pass from Alex
Eastman at the 74:12 mark.
Once we went 3-1, I knew we were
still in this game, Dantone said afterward.
But Beloit Memorial's offense broke
containment as Andres Dellatorre scored at
the 80:24 mark, giving the Purple Knights
a 4-2 lead with just over 10 minutes left in
regulation.
But Dantone answered for Menomonee
Falls, scoring at the 84:14 mark on an
assist by Eastman and driving home an
unassisted goal at the 86:20 mark for the
equalizer to make the score 4-4 at the end
of regulation.
State semifinals, I had to create something out of nothing and put it in the back
of the net, Dantone said afterward.
Dantone gave Menomonee Falls a 5-4
lead at the 91:34 mark of the first overtime
but Alberto Martinez answered for Beloit
Memorial with a long range goal that
dipped under the crossbar at the 92:10
mark. The teams battled to a stalemate at
the end of both overtime periods, as both
goalkeepers made saves in the second
overtime.
In the shootout period, Menomonee
Falls jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Genthe
stopped the first two shot attempts. But the
Purple Nights converted their next two

attempts while Menomonee Falls missed
theirs to make the score 3-2 in favor of
Menomonee Falls heading into the final
attempt. Genthe stopped the final attempt
to send Menomonee Falls to the title match
against Marquette.
I actually told them at half I thought it
was going to be a 5-4 game, Stein said. I
knew we had firepower in us, we were
composed and obviously wind was a huge
factor.
Nov.

the

Hilltoppers
Menomonee Falls faced Milwaukee
Marquette in the title game the next
evening. Menomonee Falls lost to the
Hilltoppers earlier in the season by a 4-0
result. The result was similar the second
time around, with Marquette defeating
Menomonee Falls by a 4-1 score, giving
the Hilltoppers the state Division I title.
Ted Bleser got Marquette on the board
with a goal at the 1:02 mark and added
another goal at the 25:15 mark. Jake Lucht
of Menomonee Falls broke through the
Hilltoppers defense for a goal at the
27:46 mark to make the score 2-1 in favor
of Milwaukee Marquette. But the
Hilltoppers Michael Russell added to the
Marquette lead with a goal at the 29:43
mark.
Marquette finished the scoring with a
goal by Alec Phillippe a the 57:27 mark.
For the game, Marquette attempted 25
shots to five for Menomonee Falls.
They were the best team, Stein said
of Marquette afterward.
Stein noted his team went 110 minutes
the previous evening and there isnt much
depth on the squad. In addition, Ian Storts
went out during the game while another
player was not available to due to a concussion.
Stein added that of the four losses this
season, two were to Marquette while the
other two losses were to Cedarburg and
Brookfield East, who played in the Division
2 title game.
The season ends for a team that included nine seniors and two sophomore
starters. He praised his team for being
able to battle through the season and play
hard in the title match.
Nobody expected this at the start of
the year, but we did, Stein said.

Home office spots

By Tresa Erickson
Home offices set up in a spare room make
great workspaces. You can get a lot done from
paying bills to filing paperwork to conducting
online research. Add a sofa and a TV, and you
also have a great space to relax. Unfortunately,
not everyone has a spare room for a home
office. If you dont, do not despair. You can still
create a home office in a much smaller space in
your home.
Almost any under-utilized space in your
home will work for a home office. Here are
some of the more common spaces homeowners
have set up home office.
Attics or Basements
Take a look at your attic or basement. See
any place you could set up a home office? If it
is not finished and has issues with water, temperature fluctuation and more, your attic or
basement might not be a suitable place for a
home office, especially one with a computer
and other electronics. If it doesnt have any
issues, your attic or basement might be ideal.
Just choose the best part, perhaps under a window, move in some furniture, set up some
screens and make it a private space to work.
Closets
Take a look at the closets in your home.
Spot one you could do without? Convert it to a
home office. Clean it out and either set up a
desk inside it or build one. Attach some 2x4s to
the sides of the closet walls, set some shelves on
top, and youre ready to go. You can use the
lowest shelf as a desk surface and the ones
above for books and other office items. You can
remove the closet doors or leave them be. That
way, you can shut away your office and your
mess whenever you wish.
Corners
Take a look around your home. See a neglected corner? Turn it into a home office with a
desk, chair, file cabinet and whatever else you
have space for. You can set up a home office in
the corner of almost any room from the kitchen to
your bedroom.
Entryways
Take a look at your entryway. Could it serve
the dual purpose of welcoming guests and doing
paperwork? Move over that hall tree, slide in a

Interior & Exterior Painting

desk, and youve got a place to work, a place

for someone to sit and a place for guests to hang
their coats.
Hallways
Take a look at the hallways in your home.
Have one that is rather wide or extra long? Tuck
a home office into it. All you need is a bit of
space for a small desk and chair. If there is a
nook in your hallway, you might be able to build
a desk into it.
Sofa Backs
Take a look at your sofa. Could you use a
table behind it? Desks make great sofa tables.
Rearrange the room, pull the sofa to the middle
and add a small desk behind it to serve as both
a sofa table and a home office.
Stair Landings
Take a look at your stair landing. Wouldnt it
make a great home office? Depending upon
how large the space is, you might be able to
have an easy chair for reading.
Home offices do not have to be large. You
can set one up almost anywhere in your home.
Look for under-utilized spaces, like nooks and
crannies, then make the best use of the space to
create the home office youve always wanted
but never had the room for.
