Jesus twelve disciples had the opportunity to ask questions of our Lord. It is interesting
they did not ask how to preach - or how to heal the sick - or how to raise the dead etc?
They would go on to do all these things and more in the early church. There was one thing
however, they asked of Jesus that prepared them to fulfill his call on their lives. The disciples asked Jesus, Lord teach us to pray (Luke 11:1)
Jesus prayed often. Consider these occasions when Jesus sought out the Father in prayer:
At His baptism (Luke 3:21)
Before choosing His disciples (Luke 6:12-16)
Before telling of His death (Luke 9:18-22)
On the Mount of Transfiguration ( Luke 9:28)
Before teaching the disciples to pray (Luke 11:1-4)
After the return of the 72 whom Jesus sent out (Luke 10:21-22)
Before walking on the sea (Matthew 14:23-25)
Before raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11:41-42)
At the Passover Feast (Lords Supper) (John 17:1-26)
In the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-42, Luke 22:39-46)
On the Cross (Matthew 27:46, Luke 23:46)
(List borrowed from Walk With Me by Prentice Meador and Bob Chisholm)
The pattern of prayer the disciples saw in Jesus served well as the ordinary men who
walked with our Lord did extraordinary things for the Kingdom of God! The Book of Acts
gives testimony to what godly people can accomplish through an active and vibrant prayer
life.
I am excited about addressing the theme, The Priority of Prayer, during our worship services in November. It is my hope you will learn from the scriptures that prayer is not a last
resort, but rather a first response to any and every situation in life.
I have suggested to our Church Leadership Team some ways for us to bring prayer into a
more prominent place here at Faith Christian Church in the coming year. I encourage you
to seek out God in a personal prayer time every day. The strength you find in prayer will
aid you not only in being more of who God wants you to be, but will also make the church
more effective in fulfilling Gods call on us. Pastor Reid
