A Statement on Grammar and Plagiarism

The grading rubric for each assignment indicates how grammar, spelling and plagiarism will be
graded for that assignment
As college students and as future health care professionals, any writing should reflect a high level of
professionalism and maturity. Although patient care is your first priority, part of providing quality
patient care involves writing -- in charts, emails, professional journals, etc. A high standard of
competence in written English is expected. Here are several specific expectations, policies, and
resources for you to be aware of when submitting your assignments.

Grammar/Usage and Mechanics Expectations

The student will:
1. Demonstrate appropriate practices in speaking and writing. Students are expected to write using
complete sentence, proper spelling, and mechanics.
2. Demonstrate correct use of Standard English usage including:
a. Capitalization and punctuation
b. Proper use of commonly confused terms (e.g. there, their, theyre; two, too, to; accept,
except; affect and effect.)
c. Subject-verb agreement
d. Verb form and tenses
e. Sentence structure
f. No run-ons and fragments
3. Regular use of spelling and grammar check tools on your word processing program (if you do
not know how, now is a good time to learn how)
4. It is essential that you review all of your writing assignments against the provided assignment
rubric to assure you are meeting the requirements of the assignment.

Grammar/Usage and Mechanics Resources

Plagiarism
According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, to plagiarize means:
1. to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own
2. to use (another's production) without crediting the source
3. to commit literary theft
4. to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.
In other words, Plagiarism is cheating and fraud! Software is used to check for plagiarism.
All of the following are considered plagiarism:
turning in someone elses work as your own
copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your
work, whether you give credit or not (see our section on fair use rules)

Plagiarism can destroy your academic and professional career!

All violations will be forwarded to the proper college authorities for review. The college may, at its discretion,
impose additional penalties on the student including academic probation, suspension, or expulsion.

In addition to the above disciplinary actions, your student transcript will reflect that you were in

IMPORTANT GENERAL INFORMATION

IMMUNIZATION POLICY
More detailed information on this policy is available from the Health Occupations Admission Office.
As this policy is subject to change please check for the latest policy in the Health Occupations
Admissions Office. Use the following information as a guide only
All students admitted to the El Centro Allied Health and Nursing programs must complete the following
vaccination/screening tests and provide required documentation (immunization records, physicianvalidated history, or serologic confirmation):
Tuberculosis Screening: An intradermal PPD (Mantoux) skin test is required for all applicants.
The PPD must be current within twelve (12) months of the applicants anticipated entry into a
health occupations program.
When accepted to a health occupations program, a student must be current on the screening and repeat
the PPD every twelve (12) months for the duration of his/her enrollment in the program.
If the PPD indicates a positive reaction, documentation must indicate the induration of the test site and
the applicant must also obtain a chest x-ray verifying the absence of active disease.
The chest x-ray must be current within one (1) year of program entry. The chest x-ray will then be
valid for two (2) years while the student is enrolled in the program. Individuals who have received the
BCG injection or who have a history of tuberculosis or a positive PPD result should obtain a chest x-ray
rather than the PPD.
Immunizations:
An applicant must have completed the following immunizations according to the indicated guidelines
and schedules. Documentation of a titer (blood test) with specific lab values verifying immunity or
seropositivity is also acceptable for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella, and Hepatitis B.
1. Measles Two (2) doses of measles (rubeolla) vaccine is required either in separate injections or in
combination with mumps and rubella (MMR). Both measles immunizations must have been
received after January 1, 1968. Individuals who were born prior to 01/01/57 are exempt from the
measles immunization requirements. The two doses must be received at least one month apart.
2. Mumps One (1) dose of mumps vaccine is required either in a separate injection or in combination
with measles and rubella (MMR). Individuals who were born prior to 01/01/57 are exempt from the
mumps immunization requirement.
3. Rubella One (1) dose of rubella vaccine is required either in a separate injection or in combination
with measles and mumps (MMR). There is no exemption from the rubella immunization requirement
for individuals who were born prior to 01/01/57.
4. Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis (Tdap) One (1) dose of Tdap is required within the past ten (10)
years. The documentation must clearly indicate that a Tdap was received. NOTE: A standard Tetanus
or Tetanus/Diphtheria (Td) is not accepted.

5. Varicella (chickenpox) Two (2) doses of varicella vaccine are required or documentation of a
positive titer (blood test) with the lab values report. The two doses must be received at least one month
apart. NOTE: A statement from a physician or parent indicating the students previous varicella
disease history is no longer accepted. A statement of immunity is not accepted without a positive
titer report with lab values.
6. Hepatitis B series - Three (3) doses of Hepatitis B vaccine are required per the timetable below:
Initial dose, Second dose one month after the initial dose, Third dose five months after the second dose
If an applicant fails to adhere to the above schedule, the series may have to be repeated. If the applicant
received the Pediatric Hepatitis B series, he/she should have a titer done to prove immunity. If the titer
report indicates non-immunity, the application should receive the adult Hepatitis B series on the above
timetable.
NOTE: An individual must have received the first two Hepatitis B injections with documentation
submitted with their application materials. The third and final dose must be scheduled to be
received prior to the start of the health occupations program. Documentation of the third Hepatitis B
injection or a positive Hepatitis B titer must be presented to the Health Occupations Admissions
Office before the student will be registered for their program courses.
Additional immunizations
Documentation of a current flu immunization is no longer required as part of the application process.
However, health occupations students will be required to obtain a current flu inoculation prior to their
first clinical day and repeat the inoculation annually through their program.
Students enrolled in specific health occupations programs will also be required to complete the
Hepatitis A series prior to a pediatric clinical rotation.

SCANS STATEMENT
WHAT ARE SCANS SKILLS?
These are the skills that employers need the most form their workers. SCANS skills are the predictors
of success in the workplace.
WHO DEFINED THESE SKILLS?
In 1989, the U.S. Department of Labor and Education jointly surveyed U.S. employers to find out the
most important skills and competencies needed by workers. The results of that survey identified
SCANS (Secretarys Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills).
El Centro College Students and SCANS
El Centro College is committed to the preparation of our students for success in the workplace.
All El Centro College courses provide learning outcomes which result in the mastery of SCANS skills.
Although each course will not include every SCANS skill, each course syllabus will identify the specific
SCANS skills and competencies taught in that course.
Throughout a formal program of study (Certificate, Degree or Transfer Program) a student will have the
opportunity to master all SCANS skills and competencies.
