What is Bioinformatics

AIB

Wikipedia:
Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary scientific
field that develops methods and software tools for
storing, retrieving, organizing and analyzing
biological data

Bioinformatics Vs. Computational Biology

AIB

Computational biology = the study of biology

using computational techniques. The goal is
to learn new biology, knowledge about living
systems. It is about science.
Bioinformatics = the creation of tools
(algorithms, databases) that solve
problems. The goal is to build useful tools that
work on biological data. It is about
engineering.

Applications of Bioinformatics
Sequence Analysis
Prediction of Protein Structure
Genome Annotation
Comparative Genomics
Health and Drug discovery

Bioinformatics
Misconceptions

A science that can be learned in one

semester course or a 2-days workshop
A science that helps the experimentalists
It is Bio so knowledge of mathematics
and chemical sciences is not required
Its a great skill to have, but for most, its not
even a skill its a passion, its a way of life,
its a thrill.
