12) A flat plate has thickness 5 cm, thermal conductivity 1 W/mk, convective heat transfer coefficients on its
two sides are 10 W/m2k and 20 W/m2k. Calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient for such a flat plate.
13) A cold storage room has walls made of 23 cm of brick on the outside, 8 cm of plastic foam and finally
1.5 cm of wood on the inside. The outside and inside air temperatures are 22C and 2C respectively.
The inside and outside heat transfer coefficients are respectively 29 and 12 W/m 2K. The thermal
conductivities of brick, foam and wood are 0.98, 0.02 and 0.12 W/mK respectively. If the total wall area
is 90 m2, determine the rate of heat removal by refrigeration and the temperature of the inside surface of
the brick.
14) A steam pipe 160mm ID and 170 mm OD is covered with two layers of insulation. The thickness of the
insulation are 30mm and 50mm respectively. The thermal conductivity values are 210, 0.60 and 0.33
KJ/mhr0C respectively. The temperature of the inner surface of the pipe is 300 0C and that of the outer
surface is 500C. Determine the quantity of heat flux per meter length of steam pipe and the layer contact
temperatures.
15) A wire of 6mm diameter with 2mm thick insulation ( K = 0.11 W/mK ). If the convective heat transfer
coefficient between the insulating surface and air is 25 W/mK, find the critical thickness of insulation.
16) The flow rates of hot and cold water streams running through a parallel flow heat exchanger are 0.2 kg/s
and 0.5 kg/s respectively. The inlet temperatures on the hot and cold sides are 75C and 25C
respectively. The exit temperature of hot water is 45C. If the individual heat transfer coefficients on both
sides are 650 W/m2C, calculate the area of the heat exchanger.
17) In a counter flow heat exchanger, the product of specific heat and mass flow rate is same for hot and cold
fluids. If the NTU is equal to 0.5, calculate the effectiveness of the heat exchanger.
