UBUD

Ubud is the heart of Bali, for the heart is the inner temple of Spirit, the creative
source of Beauty, and the place of limitless Love. Spirit, Beauty, and Love. That is Ubud.
Located in the center of Bali, Ubud is a peaceful village of about 9000 people. Founded
by a high priest name Rsi Markandya, Ubud remains true to its rich traditional cultural
heritage and continues to cultivate the artistic genius for which the Balinese are famous.
Ubud is all about arts & culture! Ubud was established as an artist community when
foreign artists, such as Mario Blanco, settled in Ubud. As Ubud continues to grow with
tourism, the village has been able to remain true to its culture and persevere in the arts
scene. The community is dedicated to preserving its religious traditions and sacred
rituals.
Ubud, rated the "Best City in Asia 2010", is a stunning village surrounded by
luscious emerald green rice fields, deep jungles, and high mountains. Many smaller
villages, known as banjars are dispersed in and around Ubud. These villages are worldrenowed for their wood-carving, painting, metalsmithing and silversmithing. Central
Ubud is populated by restaurants, resorts and spas, unique art & craft shops and clothing
stores filled with beautiful Balinese silks and batiks.
Ubud is also known as the "real Bali". When you wander off the main roads, you
can see spectacular rice fields, traditional villages, farmers, and ceremonial temples.
Many local villages are home to master artisans who will show you their crafts.

The name Ubud derives from "obat" or "ubad", meaning "medicine".Welcome to

Ubud yoga retreats. The Balinese believe that the flora and fauna, as well as the
surrounding waters, have healing power. The richness of landscapes and the waters
makes Ubud a haven for spiritual energy, also known as "medicine". The waters are a
main source of purification and healing energy. Ubud is the place "where two rivers
meet". The rivers flow through Campuhan, where Ubud was settled by many artists. The
Balinese believe that everything living thing has "energy". By resourcing oneself through
the energy in nature, the Balinese believe they can be healed solely through the energies
of the earth and the waters. The energy is medicine for mind, body, and soul.

The community is also known for representing the three-fold measure of "action,
heart, and the right way of life or dharma". The tree-fold measure is demonstrated by
knowing how to handle differences and how to transform the "poison" and "hatred" of the
world into beauty, peace, and love. This is the "way of the Balinese", and their "way of
life" (agama). It is about taking the "evils of the world", swallowing them, and
transforming them into beautiful flowers.
There are two main streets, Monkey Forest Road and Jl. Hanuman, which were
named after Hanuman, the white monkey made famous in the Hindu epic Ramayana.
Hanuman is a divine messenger who helped rescue Sita, the beloved wife of Rama.
Spirit, Beauty, and Love. That is Ubud.
Ubud is a map to the heart.
