Assignment 8 Goal: to move from concept to physicality. The more detail and planning
that go into describing each event, the easier construction and material acquisition will be.

Total Pieces: 4
Manufacturing Methods: The string will be wrapped around the rotating servo motor at
one end then glued to the cannon ball on the other end. The collapsing wall will be in two
part and made of foam board assembled into box shapes. The bottom half will have a hole
through small enough that the tennis ball cannot fit through it but the string can and the
top half will be stacked on top of the bottom half.
Modifications to existing product: The only modification needed will be painting the gold
ball black to appear like a cannon ball.
d. Relation to theme: The more daring of pirates would raid cities and castles by
bombarding their walls with cannon fire until they fell. The wall being knocked over here
simulates that.
Event 12: Falling wall allows for the ropes to swing and their motion is detected by
the motion sensor
Event 13: Motion sensor activating causes boat solenoid to release so the boat rolls
down the tracks and sinks
Event 14: Motion sensor activating causes solenoid to activate and press canned
smoke button, causing smoke to appear
Event 15: Motion sensor activating causes servo to spin, raising the Jolly Rodger flag
Special Considerations:
Describe Finale in detail and why it will impress audience
4. Physical Layout
-discuss several layouts/ advantages/disadvantages/ remembering goal is
entertainment
-can audience see all events?
-scaling issues (talk about how sizes of components changed throughout lab section)
-SKETCH OF FINAL LAYOUT just use blocks that represent general dimensions.
LUMPED PARAMETER METHOD
5. Bill of Material
Table: (item/event number/total number required/price/purchasing location)
6. Manufacturing
-estimate time required. Per event?
Present data as spreadsheet?
-is there sufficient time?
7. Quick and Dirty Testing
Hard Events
Button hit by falling anchor turns on fan, which propels the ship down the track
Button from falling anchor triggers solenoid to drop plank
Falling wall allows for the ropes to swing and motion is detected by motion sensor
Motion sensor activating causes boat solenoid to release so the boat rolls down the
track and sinks
Motion sensor activating causes boat solenoid to activate and press the canned
smoke button, causing smoke to appear
Medium Events
Laser pointer signals photoresistor activating solenoid to put cannonball in motion
down ramp
Spinning captains wheel pulls in cannon ball and knocks over the wall
Motion sensor activation causes servo to spin, raising Jolly Rodger flag
Easy Events
Laser pointer signals photoresistor signaling LEDs
