It was round one of the 2014 NJSIAA boys soccer South Jersey Group 4 tournament for Cherokee and Shawnee high schools on Monday, Nov. 3 at Cherokee. Pictured is Shawnee Renegade senior Ryan Buck as he used his head. Although the Renegades gave it their all
in a hard-fought bout, the team ultimately fell to Cherokee 2-1. For more photos, please see page 15.

Leaf collection underway in township

Leaves can now be placed curbside, leaving room for water runoff
Medford Township officials
have announced the fall 2014 leaf
collection program was set to
commence the week of Nov. 10,
and continue until the entire
township has been collected. The
neighborhood services staff will
commence leaf pickup on Nov. 10
in zone three, then continue onto
zones four, five, one and concluding in zone two.
The township administration
reminds residents of the requirements for leaf collection as included in the Medford solid waste
ordinance and the NJ State
Stormwater Management Regulations. Major provisions in the ordinance are as follows:
1. Leaves can be placed curbside now. Any leaves placed curbside after the township has
picked-up in a zone will be the
sole responsibility of the homeowner to remove. For those residents scheduled for a later pick-

up, township officials remind you

that leaves left out too soon could
create a fire hazard.
2. Leaves must not be placed
within 10 feet from any storm
sewer. Do not park vehicles on
the street close to leaf piles, our
trucks will not risk damage to
any parked vehicle, which makes
accessibility difficult for our
equipment.
3. Leaves must be piled away
from the curb or edge of the property to allow for water runoff
during storms, but not be placed
any further than six feet from the
edge of the roadway. At no time
should leafs be placed in the roadway. This will help alleviate traffic, pedestrian and bike hazards.
4. Any leaves generated by professional landscapers, contractors or anyone hired by a homeowner must be removed by same.
In the past, the township has
encountered delays with leaf col-

lection due to non-compliance

with township requirements,
which impacts the departments
ability to deliver prompt and efficient service. Residents that do
not follow the above procedures
will not have their leaves picked
up. The full provisions of the ordinance can be found on the Medford website utilizing the "Council and Administration link" to
administrative codes.
Progress updates will be posted
on the homepage of the Medford
website, and sent out via the
email notification system also on
the township website. Residents
are strongly encouraged to register for these e-mails for these and
other township operations at
www.medfordtownship.com/ema
ils.

zone they are located in should

One morning last year, the

freshman class at Bishop Eustace
Preparatory
School
in
Pennsauken arrived at school to
find the outside of their lockers
covered with post-it notes.
However, this was not an upperclassmen
prank.
Senior
Amanda DelRossi from Medford
said the post-its were actually
positive.
Someone took post-it notes
and wrote inspirational quotes on
them, she said.
Such a gesture may be extraordinary at some schools. For students at Bishop Eustace, it was
just another act of kindness
thanks to the impact of the
Friends of Rachel Club.
DelRossi, fellow Medford resi-

dents Caroline
Fish
and
Sarah Keane,
and Voorhees
resident Alexis Mignogna
are four Bishop
Eustace
students who
are leaders in
the
club,
DELROSSI
which is dedicated to the memory of Rachel
Scott, the first victim who was
shot during the Columbine High
School shooting in 1999.
Scott was a strong-willed high
school junior who cared deeply
about others. She also liked to
write, and her writing helped
spur Rachels Challenge, a national program promoting kindness
throughout school communities.
The four student leaders were

very young when Columbine took

place. However, they do not need
to remember the event to realize
the impact it had on the world.
Keane, a junior, said she heard
of Rachels Challenge prior to attending Bishop Eustace, but she
really became touched after seeing the Rachels Challenge presentation her freshman year.

A familiar face will return to

Former board member Trudy
Cole won a seat on the board

Medford also had a seat up for
election in the Lenape Regional
High School District. Current
board president David Stow won
re-election after running uncontested for his seat.
In the U.S. Senate election,
Cory Booker (D) defeated Jeff
Bell (R) by a tally of 997,331 votes
to 762,981. Tom MacArthur (R) defeated Aimee Belgard (D) 95,166 to
75,972 in the third congressional

district election.
In the freeholder election, Republicans Bruce Garganio and
Mary Ann O Brien defeated Democrats Tom Pullion and Michael
Schmidt with 52.55 percent of the
vote.

Midterm elections, early exit polls show discontent across the board
Dan McDonough Jr.

t first glance, the early results

of last weeks midterm elections show a nationwide backlash against President Obama and the
Democratic Party.
For the second straight midterm
election, Republicans earned significant victories, this time flipping at
least seven seats in the Senate to their
side. Three incumbent Democratic
senators lost their re-election bids, in
North Carolina, Arkansas and Colorado. Four other states Iowa, Montana, South Dakota and West Virginia also changed party hands from
Democrat to Republican. And results
in Alaska, Virginia and Louisiana are
still out, as of this writing.
The Senate victories now give the
Republicans full control of Congress,
with its majority in the House of Representatives being its largest margin
since World War II. In addition, Republican governors won election or re-

election in key states such as Ohio,

Wisconsin and New Mexico, in Maryland a traditionally Democratic
state and in Illinois, Obamas home
state.
Data such as this would make one
think that voters are unhappy with the
performance and direction of the
White House. And thats probably accurate. Early exit polls found that
Obamas approval rating is down 10
points versus 2012, and more voters
said they were voting to show opposition to Obama (34 percent) rather than
support for him (20 percent). More
people also have an unfavorable view
of the Democratic Party than a favor-

able view (53 percent to 44 percent).

But even more people have a negative view of the Republican Party (56
percent) than a positive view (40 percent).
So what gives? Voters made a statement directly to Obama with the
midterm elections; they seemed to
vote against Obama instead of for the
Republicans. Republican supporters
could spin that to say its not true;
Democratic supporters could say
things will change in two years when
Obamas out.
In the meantime, we can all expect
two more years of jarring in D.C. with
not much getting done, since the Republicans in Congress will most likely
clash with Obama in the White House.
Voters are not happy, but who are
they most unhappy with? Thats something the prognosticators will debate
heavily for the next two years, before
the next big national election in 2016.

NOV. 1218, 2014 THE MEDFORD SUN 13

Novel is 660 pages

and available on Amazon
NOVEL
Continued from page 1

After reading these best-selling

series, Mandy decided to create
her own fictional world.
Mandys 660-page novel Thunderland: The Quest to Uthnir is
now available for sale as
an e-book on Amazon. The
book is
the first
of
a
planned
three-part
series
named The
Thunderland Chronicles.
The
first
book introduces
a
12-year-old
London
girl
named Amy Wupero who is swept
into
a
magical
world full of exotic
creatures,
new
friends and danger.
She heads out on a
quest to rescue her parents from danger and simultaneously save the magical
world she entered.
The story takes place in an intricate, magical setting harkening
to some of her favorite childhood
books, which Mandy said helped
spur her interest in fiction.
I started out as a reluctant
reader, but when I started reading, I found I really liked fiction,
Mandy said. I enjoyed reading
J.R.R. Tolkiens Lord of the
Rings books and C.S. Lewis.
The book has many of the
same themes as other fictional
works. Mandy wanted to establish the good guys and the bad
guys. She also used inspiration
from her own life to come out in
the story.
I always loved the battle between good and evil in books,

Mandy said. I did try to show the

friendship between people. I always liked how Tolkien did it
with Lord of the Rings.
Mandy began writing earlier in
her childhood. She used to write
short stories about dogs and cats.
Last year, she decided to dive into
a deeper project with Thunderland.
The book began as a
fictional work, but has
transformed into a
multi-part
series.
Mandy decided to
make her story a series in the middle of
writing the first
book.
I
hadnt
planned to write
more than one,
she said. But I
had more to tell
than in just
one book.
Mandy is
working on
the second
book
in
the series.
While
she is enjoying it, she isnt in
any rush to finish it.
Its sort of a work in
progress, Mandy said. It may
take a bit longer to write this one
because of continuity and to
make sure the story lines up.
Mandy finds time to write between attending her eighth-grade
classes at Medford Memorial Mid-

dle School and piano lessons.

She describes herself as very
artistic.
With a busy extracurricular
schedule, Mandy said its difficult
to find time to write. A lot of her
writing is done at night, during
the weekends and days off from
school.
Whenever I had time after
homework or practicing for
piano, I would sit down and just
write, she said.
The Thunderland Chronicles
is a self-published work available
as an e-book on Amazon. Mandy
credits her father, Frank, for helping her publish the book online.
My dad was kind of my editor-in-chief, she said. He gave
me tips. He didnt change the storyline, he just checked it for
grammar.
In addition to dedicating the
book to her family, Mandy also
dedicated it to her teachers in the
Medford Township School District. She said she wouldnt have
been able to write a book without
their encouragement.
They had a really big part in
helping me write, Mandy said.
Ive never had a bad teacher. Ive
always had inspiring teachers
telling me how to write.
Mandy will begin high school
next year. She is unsure of what
she wants to do in the future, but
said she would love to be able to
write for the rest of her life.
Thunderland: The Quest to
Uthnir can be purchased as an ebook for $3.99 on Amazon.

Rachels Challenge in memory of student who died in Columbine

RACHELS
Continued from page 4

The most that I got out of it

was the reaction and the impact it

had on others, Keane said.

Mignogna, a sophomore, said
she joined the club her freshman
year just to have an extracurricular activity. She never imagined
becoming a leader within her
own community.
I wanted to bring Rachels

message to my own life, she said.

Mignogna has been successful
in doing that. This past summer,
she was named a national youth
anti-bullying ambassador after
entering an essay contest with
Teen Vogue magazine. In October,
she helped organize Be Blue, a
school wide anti-bullying day. Students left their fingerprints on a
banner in the school cafeteria to
support the effort.
Mignogna has overcome her
struggles with bullying and is
now spreading an anti-bullying
message to her peers. She has
seen other students have a change
of heart when they see others
performing kind acts.
Theres a very drastic change
in the way they look at others and
themselves, she said.
To help promote its message,
the club meets weekly to come up
with new activities to bring the
student body together. Some of
these activities revolve around
the seasons. The club recently did
an activity where students wrote

compliments about others on

pumpkins.
In addition, theres a subgroup
with the club called Rachels Corner that takes time during the
school day to perform kind acts.
We just do little acts of kindness and give them anonymously
to others, Keane said.
Fish said one of her favorite activities was when students wrote
kind, anonymous notes to each
other. She wrote an anonymous
note to one of her friends and
said the impact it had on her was
incredible.
Just to see the smile on her
face was really nice, Fish said.
For all four of these student
leaders, the message of Rachels
Challenge goes well beyond being
a good friend. It also means being
kind to strangers and people from
other social circles.
Interacting with others was an
idea DelRossi brought forward to
Liz Cranston, the clubs advisor.
She asked if the school would do
a challenge day where the stu-

dents would be encouraged to interact with people they hadnt

talked to before.
We would try to learn more
about others, about ourselves and
about our environment, DelRossi said.
DelRossi said the club and the
activities have allowed her to
make friends she never thought
shed have. The Friends of Rachel
Club has become one of Bishop
Eustaces largest clubs. It hosts a
wide variety of students from different grades and backgrounds.
DelRossi said no one discovered who wrote those inspirational quotes for the freshmen. In
the end, it doesnt matter who did
it. The students in the Friends of
Rachel Club know their message
is being heard among their peers.
DelRossi hopes other students
will become student leaders and
follow her peers message in keeping Scotts message alive.
I hope they come join the club,
but more importantly, I hope they
stay involved, DelRossi said.
