1L class registration is today through Wednesday at midnight. Refer to your
emails from Dean Cove or visit the registration page on Campus Cruiser for more
information.
No school on Tuesday for Veterans Day. Thank you to the many Suffolk Law
students who have served.

Tip of the week

Stretch your back

The more hours you
spend studying, the
tighter your shoulders
and back will likely get.
One way to prevent
shoulder and back pain
is to stretch. A quick
online search will return
many suggestions, which
would be good to do at
least once a day. The
lower back, shoulders,
and neck are especially
important. If you have
lower back pain,
stretching your
hamstrings could help.

We are very pleased with the outcome of how SBA Executive
Committee funding is being invested this year. Thanks to a
massive team effort of all SBA members, we were able to invest
500% more to Student Concerns, 225% more to Academic
Affairs, 200% more to Sustainability, and 175% more to
Diversity.

Student Spotlight
Nick Doherty
Nick Doherty is a 4L in Section 7B of the Evening
Division. He is the President of the Suffolk University
Gaming Law Association, SBA Federal Bar Association
Liaison and Research Assistant for Professor Jeff
Wittenberg. Nick received a bachelors degree from
Boston College and currently serves as the Chief of
Staff for a Massachusetts State Senator.
What is your role in your job at the state house?
As Chief of Staff, I wear a number of different hats but
my primary focus is to manage the legislative policies
and budget priorities of the Senator. In this role, I
serve as the principle contact for issues related to
consumer protection and licensing, which range from
the 31 boards at the Department of Professional
Licensure to the liquor laws under the purview of the
Treasurers office and the implementation of simulcasting capabilities and live horse
racing days which is overseen by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. In
addition to my own responsibilities, I oversee the Senators staff and keep him
briefed on current events related to the district and across the Commonwealth.
How is the time balance between work and school?
I am incredibly fortunate to work with a boss who understands the commitment law
school requires. Sometimes, the biggest challenge is transitioning from a work
mindset to a classroom setting. Its only a short walk between the law school and
State House and there are days when I need to stand outside the building and
mentally wall off responsibilities at work so I can focus on course materials.
What are you most looking forward to upon graduation?
Being able to relax on a Sunday.
Do you have any plans for after graduation?
Id like to stay connected with the government in some capacity and am also
pursuing non-traditional fields of law to utilize my degree. As for some traveling,

nothing is planned but I have kept a bucket list of places I want to visit when school
is over and my schedule is freed up.
What do you enjoy doing outside of law school?
During the workweek there isnt much free time between work and school but I try
to make the Suffolk Law skate on Monday nights as often as my schedule permits.
On the weekends, I take an early morning hike through the Blue Hills with my two
golden retrievers to enjoy some fresh air before heading to the library and always
watch Don Cherry on the Coachs Corner during Hockey Night in Canada.
Have you focused on a certain area of law at Suffolk?
I tailored my non-core courses around subjects where the law intersects with public
policy. For any student interested in pursuing a career in government, I would
strongly suggest taking courses taught by Professor Al Roberts and Professor Tim
Wilkerson. Both professors provided a unique perspective on government and how
policy gets shaped, through the legislative and regulatory processes, which has truly
helped me become a better staff member.

Judge Bonnie MacLeod --- Class of 1972
Judge Bonnie MacLeod was appointed to the bench in 1989 and is currently a
Superior Court Judge in Suffolk County. Interview by SBA Alumni Affairs Committee
co-director Eunice Aikins-Afful.
Where did you attend undergraduate?
Regis College.
What journals/activities/concentrations did you participate
in at Suffolk Law?
Law Review; SBA representative.
What do you consider the best part of your job?
Whats not to love?
What type of attorney did you want to be upon entering
Suffolk Law?
An employed attorney.
What was your favorite class while at Suffolk?
Trial Practice.
Who was your favorite professor?
Professor Richard Pizzano.
What is your greatest professional achievement?
My appointment to the bench in 1989.
Who is your favorite Supreme Court Justice, living or deceased?
Thurgood Marshall.
Any interview tips?
As corny as it sounds- try to be your best self- has always worked for me.
One piece of advice?
Find what you love in the law and do it; it all matters.
