Hippocrates has made many notable contributions to the world of
medicine. These major contributions the invention of prognosis to
new views on treatments. He initiated prognosis by looking at the
symptoms of the illness and comparing them to previous cases,
allowing Hippocratic physicians to evaluate the course of the illness.

Hippocrates Theories and Treatment

Humorism
This theory dominated the medical thinking in the West for almost
two millenia. This theory states that the body is healthy when the
four fundamental humors are balanced (pepsis), and disease results
when they are unbalanced (dyscrasia). The four humors are yellow
bile, black bile, phlegm, and blood.

Methods of Treatment
Hippocrates believed that the body had incredible power to heal
itself. Usually, he would prescribe improved diet and exercise. If these
failed however, he would resort to other methods such as herbal
therapy, bloodletting or, very infrequently, surgery.

The Hippocratic Corpus

The Hippocratic
Corpus (Latin: Corpus
Hippocraticum),
or Hippocratic Collection, is a collection of around 60 early
Ancient Greek medical works strongly associated with the
physician Hippocrates and his teachings. They are, however,
varied in content, age, and style, and are largely of unknown
authorship.

The Hippocratic Oath

The Hippocratic
Oath (Greek horkos)
is
an
oath
historically
taken
by physicians and physician assistants. It is one of the most widely known of Greek medical
texts. It requires a new physician to swear, upon a number of healing gods, to uphold
specific ethical standards.
