Parts of a plant
Partes de la planta
Plants are living things because they are born, they grow and they die.
Las plantas son seres vivos porque nacen, crecen y mueren.
Plants have three parts.
Las plantas tienen tres partes.

Roots. The roots are the part of the plant that grow underground.
Races. Las races son la parte de la planta que crece bajo la tierra.
- They hold the plant in the ground.
- Sostienen la planta en el suelo.
- Through the roots, the plant gets water and mineral salts.
- Por las races, la planta obtiene agua y sales minerales.

The stem.The stem is the part of the plant that grow above the ground.
El tallo. El tallo es la parte de la planta que crece sobre la tierra.
There are two types of stems.
Hay dos tipos de tallos.
- Woody stems. They are hard. They are two types.
- Tallos leosos. Son duros. Hay dos tipos.

Shrubs. They have a thin stem.

Arbustos. Tienen el tallo delgado.

Trees. They have a thick stem.

rboles. Tienen el tallo grueso.

Non-woody stems. They are soft and flexible. Herbs have herbaceous
stems.
Tallos no leosos. Son blandos y flexibles. Las hierbas tienen tallos
leosos.

Leaves. The leaves are the green part of the plant.

Las hojas. Las hojas son la parte verde de la planta.
Some trees lose all their leaves in autumn. These are deciduous trees.
Others do not lose all their leaves at one time, but change little by little.
These are evergreen trees.
Algunos rboles pierden todas sus hojas en otoo. Estos son rboles de hoja
caduca. Otros no las pierden todas a la vez, lo hacen poco a poco. Estos son
rboles de hoja perenne.

Plants make their own food in their leaves.
Las plantas fabrican su propio alimento en sus hojas.

First, they absorb water and mineral salts through the roots.This is the
xylem sap.
Primero, absorben agua y sales minerales a travs de las races. Esto es la sabia
bruta.
The xylem sap moves through the stem and branches until it reaches the
leaves.
La sabia bruta se mueve a travs del tallo y de las hojas hasta que alcanza las
hojas.
In the leaves, with the sunlight and the air, the xylem sap turns into food.
This food is phloem sap.
En las hojas, con la luz del sol y el aire, la sabia bruta se transforma en comida.
Esta comida es la sabia elaborada.

Flowers have the organs that carry out the function of reproduction
Las flores tienen los rganos que llevan a cabo la funcin de la reproduccin.
These are the most important parts of a flower:
Estas son las partes ms importantes de una flor:

Calyx. It`s a group of many small green leaves. These leaves are sepals. The
calyx protects the flower.
El cliz. Es un grupo de pequeas hojas verdes. Estas hojas son spalos. El cliz
protege la flor.
Corolla. Its a group of coloured leaves. These leaves are petals.
Corola. Es un grupo de hojas coloreadas. Estas hojas son ptalos.
Stamens. These are the male reproductive organs. They are long and have
round ends. These round ends have pollen.
Estambres. Son los rganos reproductores masculinos. Son largos y terminan
con forma redondeada. En estas puntas redondeadas est el polen.
Pistil. It is the female reproductive organ. It has the shape of a bottle. Its
got ovules inside.
Pistilo. Es el rgano reproductor femenino. Tiene forma de botella. Tiene vulos
en su interior.

Fruit and seeds

Frutos y semillas
When pollen grains enter the pistil, the flower starts to change. It loses its petals
and the pistil becomes a fruit. There are seeds inside the fruit.
Cuando los granos de polen entran en el pistilo, la flor empieza a cambiar. Pierde sus
ptalos y el pistilo se convierte en un fruto. Hay semillas en el interior del fruto.
Some fruit, like peaches or almonds, have only one seed. Others, like peppers or
melons have lots of seeds.
Algunas frutas, como los melocotones o las almendras, tienen una sola semilla. Otras,
como los pimientos o los melones tienen montones de pepitas.
A plant is born
Nace una planta
When a seed falls to the ground and finds enough water and the correct
temperature, a new plant is born. This is called germination.
Cuando una semilla cae al suelo y encuentra la suficiente agua y la temperatura
adecuada, nace una nueva planta. A esto se le llama germinacin.
Some plants, like geraniums or potatoes, can grow from cuttings. These are small
pieces of the stem or root.
Algunas plantas, como los geranios o las patatas, pueden nacer de esquejes. Son
pequeos trozos del tallo o de las races.

We can classify plants by size:

Grasses are small. They have soft, flexible stems. Their stems are usually
green.
Las hierbas son pequeas. Tienen tallos blandos y flexibles. Sus tallos son
normalmente verdes.
Bushes are bigger than grasses. They have a hard, wood stem. Branches
grow close to the ground.
Los arbustos son ms grandes que las hierbas. Tienen un tallo duro y leoso. Las
ramas crecen cerca del suelo.
Trees are bigger than bushes. They have hard, wood stems. Branches grow
high from the ground.
Los rboles son ms grandes que los arbustos. Tienen tallos duros y leosos. Las
ramas crecen arriba del suelo.

Plants with flowers live in many parts of the world. They grow in
rainforests, desserts and gardens. Roses are plants with flowers.
Las plantas con flores viven en muchas partes del mundo. Crecen en bosques,
desiertos y jardines. Las rosas son plantas con flores.

Plants without flowers often grow in dark places like forests or near rivers.
Ferns are plants without flowers.
Las plantas sin flores a menudo crecen en sitios oscuros como los bosques o
cerca de los ros . Los helechos son plantas sin flores.

Plants that we grow and wild plants.

Plantas que nosotros cultivamos y plantas salvajes.

Farmers grow plants that we need for food, like wheat. We also grow
flowers in our gardens.
Los granjeros cultivan plantas que necesitamos para comer, como el trigo.
Tambin cultivamos flores en nuestros jardines.

Other plants like weeds grow wild.

Otras plantas, como la maleza, crece salvaje.
