*All styles highlighted in red have been chosen for Fall 2014 because their selling history
indicated high performance at store level. These styles have a total % sell thru of 48% or
higher and an average weekly sell thru of 8% or higher, which qualifies these items as good
sellers. The suggested purchase quantities of these styles remain approximately the same as
last years order to ensure repeat success, with the exception of the three best sellers:
? Three-Quarter Sleeve French Terry Fit-and-Flare Dress, increased from 200 units to
500, as it had an extremely high total sell thru of 97% and is the only dress that the
Bay will be carrying from Guess.
? Sophia Mid-Rise Curvy Skinny Jeans, increased from 400 to 1000, as it had an excellent
total sell thru of 94.5%. The classic wash and silhouette of this style makes it a
wardrobe staple that will remain popular regardless of trend fluctuations.
? Kate Low-Rise Skinny Jeans with Side Lace-Up, increased from 500 units to 1000
because of its strong sell thru of 96%. Furthermore, the Merlot Red colour is among
the jewel tones that are trending for Fall 2014 (Color Solutions International).
Three-Quarter Sleeve Fuzzy Sweater: Fall 2014 will see a Rocker trend that will
incorporate mohair as a primary fabric (Fashion Snoops). Since 100% mohair sweaters are
typically expensive, a synthetic material is used in the construction of this garment, giving
the sweater a fuzzy mohair aesthetic. One trending colour palette in womens wear for
Fall 2014 includes soft pastel tones, particularly a pale pink (Color Solutions International).
Pale pink is also a key colour for the upcoming Boudoir trend of Fall 2014 (Fashion
Snoops). A purchase quantity of 800 total units was chosen, as this is approximately 200
units less than the Faux-Pearl Guess Logo Tee done in a similar colour. Being a new and
upcoming style in a trendy fashion colour, we wanted to test the market and gauge
customer response.
Long-Sleeve Snake-Embossed Faux-Leather Top: In keeping with Fall 2014s Rocker
trend, leather and faux leather, especially in black, is making a huge resurgence (Fashion
Snoops). Guesss target customer is unlikely to spend $300+ for a real leather top, so
faux-leather is a used as an alternative. The top is done in a peplum cut, a prominent
silhouette on Resort 2013 runways (Style.com). As the average Guess customer at the Bay
is in the early to late majority of the Diffusion of Innovation Curve, many will continue to
wear or begin to adopt this trend for Fall 2014. A quantity of 1000 units was chosen
because this style has proved to be popular for several seasons, as it is a figure-flattering
style, and will likely be a driving seller.
Long-Sleeve Cold Shoulder Shredded Sweater: Jewel tones are trending for Fall 2014
and wine red in particular will be a key colour (Color Solutions International). The
shredded or slashed look is a major component in achieving the grungy, edgy aesthetic of
Fall 2014s Rocker trend (Fashion Snoops). A quantity of 1000 units is recommended for
purchase because deep reds have proven to be strong sellers for Guess in the past. An
example of this can be seen in the Kate Low Rise Skinny Jean with Side Lace-up that had a
total sell thru of 96% last year in a merlot wash.
Maria Long-Sleeve Sweater: The Maria Long-Sleeve Sweater was chosen for Fall 2014
mainly due to its shoulder embellishment in metallic thread and beading. Embellishments,
mixed media, and metallics are major components of the Rocker trend (Fashion Snoops).
The sweater is done in neutral milk multi and since neutrals, such as ivory, are key
colours for Fall 2014, this item should perform well at retail (Color Solutions
International). A quantity of 900 units was chosen because the sweater is a staple piece
with trendy accents, making it easy for potential customers to adopt into their wardrobe.
Long-Sleeve Embellished Electric Plaid Utility Shirt: The Long-Sleeve Embellished
Electric Plaid Utility Shirt was chosen for Fall 2014 because it incorporates many Rocker
trend components including monochromatic plaid and stud embellishment (Fashion
Snoops). A quantity of 700 units was chosen because, while plaid is trending for Fall 2014,
it has been popular for many seasons and many customers may already own something
similar.
Long-Sleeve Faux-Leather Contrast Top: Leather-looking styles are a part of the Rocker
trend for Fall 2014 (Fashion Snoops). Jewel tones, such as Emerald Green, and neutrals
such as charcoal grey are key colours for Fall 2014, which is why this top is offered in both
colours (Color Solutions International). A quantity of 1000 units for each colour was
chosen because this style of top has, in recent years, become a staple in womens
wardrobes. Similar styles are being offered by competitors that target a similar consumer
base, such as Forever 21 and Express. However, we believe the current colours, flattering
silhouette, and fabrication designed for quality and comfort will drive sales for this style.
Long-Sleeve Boucle Moto Jacket: The modified biker jacket is a key item for the Rocker
trend of Fall 2014 (Fashion Snoops); it is an effective alternative to the classic leather biker
jacket. Boucl has begun making appearances at retail for Fall 2013 (Style Sight), and as
aforementioned, we want to introduce the trend at a time when the Guess customer, who
falls in the majority category of the Diffusion of Innovation Curve, will be willing to accept
it. Because of the neutral ivory tone as well as the classy meets edgy aesthetic created by
the combination of boucl and the biker silhouette, this style will not only be a trendy item,
but will endure to become an investment piece and incorporate itself seamlessly into the
wardrobes of the Guess customer. A purchase quantity of only 600 units is suggested
because we want to be careful not to cannibalize sales of the Padded Biker Vintage Effect
Faux-Leather Jacket, which also comes in a neutral ivory and has proven to be a top seller
in the past.
Faux-Leather Binding Cutout Top: The Faux-Leather Binding Cutout Top was chosen for
the Fall 2014 Guess lineup at the Bay because it incorporates two key upcoming trends for
Fall 2014: leather accents and a rich red wine colour (Fashion Snoops). A quantity of 700
units was chosen because we want to make sure the edgy detailing and conservative cut is
well received by the Guess shopper in the Bay before making a large order.
Simple Crop Top: The Simple Crop Top was chosen because crop tops are currently
driving high sales at retail and considering the Guess customer typically lies in the majority
stage of the Diffusion of Innovation Curve, we feel the style will be well-received by
customers for the upcoming Fall 2014 season. Done in jet-black, the style remains a staple
item that easily compliments an already established wardrobe as well as fits in seamlessly
to the Rocker trend of Fall 14 (Fashion Snoops). We chose a purchase quantity of 800
because the piece has enough simplicity to define itself as a staple wardrobe piece but can
be exclusive to some body types and/or age groups.
Lexi Embellished Denim Shirt: The Lexi Embellished Denim Shirt features chain trim, and
a vintage-looking wash, which are components of the Rocker trend for Fall 2014 (Fashion
Snoops). As well, denim trends for Fall 2014 forecast chains on jeans (Trend Council),
however this style makes it more subtle and wearable for the Guess customer who is in the
early to late majority of the Diffusion of Innovation Curve. Denim shirts are staples for
women and are being offered by many of Guess competitors including Forever 21, Levis,
American Eagle, and the Gap, one of Guess biggest competitors (Hoovers). Denim shirts are
a classic style that has been carried in Guess stores for many years and consistently sells
well. However, yoke embellishments set this denim shirt apart from the rest. In order to
keep the Guess selection in the Bay a hub for the newest and latest styles, we suggest
limiting the quantity to 700.
The Perfect Tank: Basic tank tops are a wardrobe staple for every customer regardless of
size, age, or personal style because they are essential and effective layering pieces. The
perfect tank was introduced this year in dark charcoal, a key colour in the neutrals category
for Fall 2014 (Color Solutions International). A quantity of 1200 units was chosen because
this classic staple piece does not go out of style and its price point of $24.00 makes the tank
affordable and approachable for all customers.
Studded Guess Logo Tee: The Faux-Pearl Guess Logo Tee was one of last years strong
sellers, with a sell thru of 49% after 6 weeks in store. Because of the impressive sell thru,
weve expanded the style to incorporate the edgy aesthetic that will emerge in Fall 2014
(Fashion Snoops). The tee was introduced in black and the pearls were replaced with metal
studs. The tee upholds the same price point and total unit count as the Faux-Pearl Guess
Logo Tee because those numbers proved to be effective in last years order.
Sophia Mid-Rise Curvy Skinny Jeans with Faux-Leather Side Panel: The Sophia
Mid-Rise Curvy Skinny Jeans were a hot seller with a total sell thru of 94.5% after six
weeks; so the style was expanded and updated to follow several key trends for Fall 2014.
Side stripes are gaining popularity as an upcoming denim trend (Trend Council), so we
incorporated a side panel in faux-leather to the classic Sophia Mid Rise. The faux leather
stripe is also in keeping with the edgy Rocker trend (Fashion Snoops). The jeans were done
in a light grey to incorporate the use of neutral tones, which are forecasted to be popular
for Fall 2014 (Color Solutions International). A quantity of 500 units was chosen, as it is
half the quantity previously purchased of the Sophia Mid-Rise Curvy Skinny Jeans. The
smaller amount allows us to test the market.
Kate Low-Rise Skinny Jeans with Patchwork: The Kate Low-Rise Skinny Jeans with Side
Lace were best sellers for this previous season with a total sell thru of 96% after six weeks,
so the style was expanded on for Fall 2014. The same denim cut was used, as skinny jeans
are considered a fashion classic, but the style was expanded on to encompass the Fall 2014
patchwork denim trend (Trend Council). Similar to the Sophia mid-rise with side stripe, we
suggest a purchase quantity of 500 units total in order to test consumer response to this
emerging trend in the market.
Kate Low-Rise Skinny Jeans with Mini Roll, Indigo: The Kate Low-Rise Skinny Jeans with
Mini Roll in Spirited Destroy Wash was a popular seller with a total sell thru of 85%. The
style was expanded on by offering an additional wash in Indigo. Fall 2014 will see a deep
and rich indigo wash gaining popularity (Trend Council). A quantity of 1000 units was
chosen as this is approximately the same number that had success this past selling season,
as well as Indigos popularity as a staple wash.
Brittney Gold-Foil Mid-Rise Leggings: Despite having a low overall sell thru of 19%, the
Brittney Gold-Foil Mid-Rise Leggings in Cracked Gold had an excellent sell thru this week at
10%. This could indicate that the leggings were introduced too early to the Bay and Guess
target customer. While the Guess customer may be in the early majority of the diffusion of
innovation curve, the Bay customer is more likely in the late majority of the diffusion of
innovation curve. The Guess customer at the Bay is only beginning to become comfortable
with this style, as it is an innovative style. It is recommended that this style be kept on for
Fall 2014 in the same quantity (500 units) because we feel the style is just beginning to
gain momentum and will become a popular seller. The price has been reduced from $148 to
$138 in order to encourage adoption.
Faux-Leather Skirt with Back Pockets: The black leather-look of this style incorporates
the Rocker trend for Fall 2014 (Fashion Snoops). As well, the pencil cut skirt is a key item
for the Boudoir trend for Fall 2014 (Fashion Snoops). Many of Guess competitors are
including leather or faux-leather pencil skirts in their product lineup, such as H & M,
TopShop, Forever 21, and Zara, all of which cater to a similar target customer as Guess. A
quantity of 800 units was chosen, as this is the only skirt in the Guess lineup sold at the Bay
and leather and faux-leather skirts have been popular sellers for the past several seasons.
The core objective behind this proposed buy is the success of Guess merchandise on the
Bays retail floor. As such, we have devised a marketing plan to accompany the proposed
buy to support mutual success in the upcoming season. There are five key marketing
strategies we would like to put in place alongside our product to help ensure sales success
at store level. They are as follows:
1. Product knowledge seminars for your staff hosted by Guess personnel as well as one
gifted outfit per season for sales associates.
? Product knowledge seminars will allow sales associates to sell the line to customers
more effectively and knowledgably. The free seasonal outfit will encourage sales
associates to be passionate about product, while allowing them to gain valuable
insight into the wear and quality of the garments. Sales associates will also be able
to visibly showcase Guess style.
2. A selection of visual merchandising material allocated to the Guess boutique within
your store from Guess headquarters.
? A strong visual presentation in line with the Guess brand will entice potential
customers to browse the Guess selection. It will also encourage brand recognition
and allow customers to easily make associations between the Guess brand and the
Guess product within the Bay, which will hopefully attract loyal brand followers.
3. A joint customer loyalty program with Guess and HBC financial.
? Guess will offer benefits to clients making Guess purchases with their HBC credit
card. Benefits may involve an extended return policy as well as a point system
specific to Guess apparel that earns customers 1 point for every dollar spent and
